    I love this guy because of his total honesty. Thank you so much. This was one of the reasons I wanted to get a Subaru--because of wear the oil filter is situated.

    Well done. Lots of good advice. Didn't realize I didn't need to jack up the car. Now I think I'll change the oil in my 2017 Forester.

    Nice! Also have a 2017 Forester. With the filter being on top like that, I started using EWK extractor. You have to get the hang of getting tube in right, but you never get under the car. First time, I pulled plug after extracting - not a single drop came out.

    First time I see an oil filter like this one on a car
    Turned out to be easier than what I thought

    A lot of people complain that the initial oil filter removal is a hard and I would bet this is because they don’t pre-coat the oil filter’s rubber seal before installation. Great video!

    With the drain plug, I just let it fall in the oil collector pan. Then I use a magnetic pen to fish it out and wipe it off with a shop rag. Very easy and no mess. Thanks for the video. Much easier than my 2000 Subaru Outback!

    Helpful video, thank you! Our daughter took her Subaru, Forrester to Jiffy Lube and now oil is everywhere. They are trying to say they didn't do it? Ridiculous statement! It was fine before the oil change and now it's leaking around the plug. Thank you for helping understand what might have happened. Thank you for your wealth of information. Cheers.

    Great videos, thanks for making them.
    One suggestion for not spilling the oil when removing the drain plug is to leave the oil cap/filter/etc in place, remove the drain plug first then open them up to let the oil drain faster. This way the oil won't come out as forcefully just when the drain plug is removed. I do put rugs around the pan anyway, just in case.

    As the oil filter is remote mounted and up high, if you change the filter first it will allow the oil galleries to drain back into the sump better and give you a more complete oil change.

    Good video man! As someone who works at a dealership (not specifically Subaru and not USA) but the mating surface is always cleaned in our workshop to prevent debris on the seal from causing leaks. I'm not sure if Subaru America is the same but in Australia they recommend you check the oil on a level surface, with the engine at operating temperature, leaving it for 5 minutes after switching off.
    Also be aware that fully synthetic oil will expand quite a lot compared to conventional mineral and even semi synthetic oil. So if it's just under the max mark, it will expand up to the max mark when hot.
    Like the ease of the FA motor, but still love my ej25 turbo forester haha

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tips man! The FA is so easy, but I do love my STI and am happy to put up with the belly pan every few thousand miles!

    After loosening the filter slightly, punch a hole in the top of it, which releases the vacuum pressure and allows the oil to drain out much more efficiently.

  • @K03sport
    @K03sport 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    it shouldn't matter which brand oil you use as long as the brand and type meet the Subaru spec...when I do my oil/filter change, I like to write on the filter the date, mileage, & oil type on the filter as a reminder of the last change...I know there are papers/stickers for this, but the filter cap works too...silver sharpie FTW...I also write the dates of changes on my air and cabin filters to make sure I don't go too long between changes.

    Great Video man! Also, speaking of motor oils, I use Mobil1 5W30 Extended Performance for my 10 Legacy and 5W20 for my Mazda6. Great Motor oils with Mobil1 filters. A little expensive but its worth it. Real smooth running on both my cars!

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool man! I used to be a mobile 1 guy as well. I've gone away from it for my subarus because of a few oil analysis posts I read on the forums, but I may just be paranoid!

    • @Alibeatzade91
      @Alibeatzade91 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a matter of preference, to be honest. Yet maybe because I switched from Firestone's Pennzoil or Quaker State, Mobil1 runs a lot smoother on both my cars. Also, can you post the link from where you bought that plug for your oil drain? That sounds like a very smart idea to avoid the mess in the garages and elsewhere.

  • @Garrison169
    @Garrison169 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you fill the new filter with oil, you will prevent the engine running dry for a few seconds after the first start after the oil change. Turn it over quickly and spin it on.

    Many people seem to favor pennzoil platinum for the FA. I used it on my FXT and I believe it meets the same standards as the subie oil. Very cheap price, seem to run fine. Subispeed sells the black Tokyo Roki filters for pretty cheap. Not sure if they are better, but that's what the car comes with from the dealer

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually used to use Pennzoil Platinum on my previous WRX! It did show good results from the oil testing I'd seen people do online. I may go back to using it. Thanks for the tip on the black filters!

    I was so old school up to about 3 years ago and I'm 42. I did changes every 3000 miles/3 months. And you know what, the engine and transmission in my 1999 Ford Taurus never had any internal engine issues and the car has 250,000 miles. Sadly it's the rust that will do the car in. I should have washed the car every week.
    Edit: Dude, use a card board boxes under the area and buy a box of cheap disposable gloves at harbor freight.

    My new 2017 Forester has a little bit up 1000 mileage. Temperature here in Seattle is around 40F, my Forester doesn't "gear-up" when speed up and maintains at high RPM at the beginning of 5-7 mins after engine has a "cold-start" (after overnight parking). It gears up and rpm drops to below 2000 when speed below 60 mph after 7 mins of driving. Is this something like cold-engine-protection in order to warm up engine oil quickly? This is kind of annoying when speed up climbing uphill at early morning heading to work. It takes 15 mins driving to work and half of time is in "cold-engine" status and fuel consumption is higher than average. Any guys have same issue? Thanks!

      They sell a drain valve that will fit your car for sure. I just went to the Fumoto website and put in my car's info and they'll give you the part number. Found it on amazon! I'm in the boat that the blue filter is fine, maybe its not quite as good as the black but its way easier to get and approved by Subaru. If you keep your oil fresh and filters fresh I don't see the issue!

    I am not familiar with but love the idea of the fumoto drain plug but worry about the lever switching open while driving thru rough terrain, brush, or snow. Is this a valid concern?

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesnt sit that low actually, you'd probably be scraping some other stuff before the drain plug. But they sell a separate clip that snaps on and keeps the actual valve lever closed for extra protection! It's like $5 extra.

      I have a 2015 Subaru forester. Literally only changed the only, at 40K miles, only a few problems. One, the windshield collect cracks extremely easily (even after replacement), and the tires were out of alignment pretty quick (may have been that way when purchased). Bought it brand new. Air gauge shuts off immediately after filling a tire. Its a good car. About 22 mpg average.

    First oil change on my 2016 WRX was also an oily mess when draining. The threads on the drain bolt were surprisingly short causing the hot oil to splash on my hand and driveway. Was it like that on the Forester XT ?

    Thanks for that T-WRX. Given it is a forester, you may go off-road and so there is a chance a rock could knock off the Fumoto Oil Drain valve and drop your oil - good way to kill motor - I might just put up with putting a sheet of cardboard down to catch drips from oil changes me thinks.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it could be risky if you are an off roader! That being said it doesn't hang that low. I don't do really any major off road stuff so I am not too worried about it!

    • @therealchickentender

      @@superduperkid3143 I'm late as well. I actually bought the valve shortly after buying my '17 XT but was then persuaded by two separate fellas I trust (one a Subie authorized mechanic and one a hard-core enthusiast) not to install the thing. I've still got it but at the end of the day there's a still a chance that thing could fail, be from impact or some other (exceptionally unlikely) happening and there goes your oil... There's simply no way that can happen with a plug. The new fozzie's oil changes are so easy compared to most anyhow that I chose to just leave it be, bought a pack of 20 crush washers and I'm good for years.

    Get a good oil extractor and you will never need to get under your car for oil changes. Don't listen to the critics, you can get every last drop with an extractor if you do it right. Been using one for years with some top mount oil filter cars i have had in the past (VW's, BMW, Audi, Subaru)....I wish Honda would go top mount!

This time I bought an extra quart of oil so I know what it takes. It calls for 0-20W. I'm like you, I want to start pulling the maintence myself not only to save money, but to do a better job. This is my first Subaru and need to learn about it. Are there any tips on rotating the tires? Do's or more importantly don'ts

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, thanks for the notes. This is a hard thing to manage actually, some people need a lot of info and need the granular level details like this and others want only the big items because they get annoyed hearing about the small items they already know. Anyway, regarding the tire rotation, you can do it yourself with the tools in your trunk (preferably use a torque wrench though). I usually use the spare tire so I can just do one wheel at a time!

    Do you have an estimate for the price difference between doing an oil change yourself versus going to the dealer? I assume your reasoning is more than just price, but I'm curious how much you spend on materials for each oil change.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly don't know what the dealer charges for oil changes? But this should cost you less than $60 for the oil and filter even if you buy the parts from the dealer. You probably save like $20 or something for a full synthetic oil change, but mostly the peace of mind and the enjoyment of doing it yourself!

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.5 is a good motor, its just more boring and slow. Makes it seem like every other small SUV, the XT as a nice punch. Still a great car though, excellent AWD, decent interior, great space.

    • @jacquesmontague2477
      @jacquesmontague2477 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coming from a 32 year old Cadillac with an anemic 4.1L V8 I don't think I'll have an issue, it's more horsepower than I have, which is 139, so It'll be quicker since it's lighter. The CVT will take some getting used to though.

      MrMinecraftAtlantis My plan is to stick to around 4k miles per change. We'll be keeping this car most likely 100k+ miles so I'm ok to spend a little more in caution and keep things nice and clean! I think it as ok at 5k and subaru recommends 6k, but 4k is my happy place I think,

    • @brent1041
      @brent1041 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would be to scared of something like a small branch dumping the oil with that fancy valve. A normal oil plug isn't hard to take out every 5000 miles.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course there is some risk. I've never heard of one opening though. Its not easy to turn and it has to be lifted to be turned. They sell an additional plastic clip for anyone really worried.

    • @dkcwenge
      @dkcwenge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the lever is spring loaded and seats into a square notch so it can't slide into open position. if anything from the road causes it to open, it would have to be some hand reaching from under the ground or something
