    My biggest issue with the EOS R was the shadow noise and pattern noise when pulling shadows. I had the 5DIV and could push and pull those files, even at higher ISOs, and never had the problems I had with the R. That was really the only reason I sold the R (and some video limitations) and now await a new camera, probably the R5.
    I didn't see any colour differences here with the R6 vs the R/R5 like some people are talking about.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aye I hear you - I've heard from countless folks that the 5DMIV handled noise in the shadows incredibly well. I have noticed on some higher ISO shots that there are a few artifacts in the shadows, when they are pulled out. I do feel like the R5 handles that a bit better than the R. And colors were spot on, with all three cameras :)
      Thanks for watching!

      @@RealityReimagined Yes I got my hands on Raw files from the R5 and it is now better at shadow recovery and noise than the 5DIV which is all I was wanting. However that $5400 price tag here in Canada has me playing the waiting game. The R5 is apparently outselling supply, so I have a sad feeling price drops won't be any time soon.

    Since we all process our photos and Photoshop has super resolution enhancement that makes the photo four times larger, I'm not sure image size and pixel count matters near as much as it used to.

    The sensor in the R6 that you are complaining about is the same sensor as the $6500. 1 DX Mk 3 according to Canon website. The only difference is the 1DX uses an optical AA filter. The processor is the same in both cameras. This is the camera that is used for NFL, NBA, MLB, games. Also the Olympics and soccer all around the world. A well known photographer the shoots for NASA and Space X uses the 1DX mk 3 and an R6. You might want to rethink that demonstration to something real world like making prints.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So one of the major advantages of the 1D M3 over all other current/modern camera bodies is the FPS burst that the camera can capture. Hence why it's used a lot for action photography of any kind. However it has often been stated in reviews for several months that the megapixel variation between the R and the 1D M3 positioned the former for more broad ranges of genres of photography and the latter being applicable to action. However this review was a comparison of mirrorless cameras, which I think its fair to say is the future direction of digital cameras, from all major brands. I do not see the relevance of using a DSLR and its price point as a measurement of how the R6 compares to the R and R5 - which again is clearly what is on the minds of most photographers who are looking at upgrading their Canon gear.
      In regard to prints - I will leave that comment on the second you made on the video.

    When you zoom out to 100% at 18:15 the R6 looks amazing! Zooming in 300% or 400% isn’t really a good comparison between the image quality since no one ever views images this way. Interesting to see these compared though. Thanks for the video!

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aye I agree that the common use of the images will never been that cropped in - for the average portrait photographer and potentially what they sell to clients. However, I do feel that it is relevant to analyze the pictures that close in, due to how much Photoshop is changing and embracing larger files as well as other graphics programs, etc. I see in my education travels, a lot of folks going in various directions with their images and my hope in showing them this video, is that they will make good decisions about the full offering of their camera :)
      Thank you for commenting and watching - most appreciated!

      You are most welcome and to update - I've now upgraded to the R5, again mainly for the video options. However a mentor and highly influential member of the industry (and a Canon Explorer of Light) recently said that the R is still a great camera and that if you currently use one, to invest in new RF lens - if you don't plan on doing video. Making a new video soon discussing the R5. Thanks for watching!

    I saw your test then I tried comparing the R and the R6 with the same method you did. (Upscaling the R6 with smartobject enabled to match the R in photoshop using nearly identical images) my results were that I tried to look for the difference but I can't seem to find anything significant that you did even when zooming in at 300%.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea to use the R6 image as a smart object and then match it in physical size to the R. I will give that a test on the various genre images I captured and see what's what. Perhaps that's the strength of the Digic X? The data can be realigned with a new image size, once you convert to smart objects. Thanks for watching and the heads up!

    The R5 was never really a consideration for me mainly because of cost, but I had been debating on moving from my EOS R to the R6. I primarily photograph landscapes, city scapes, and night sky so I thought maybe losing 10 mp wouldn't be that big of a deal if other aspects of the R6 were a significant upgrade. But it appears that for now keeping the R makes the most sense and continue adding to my RF lens selection. If the R6 had a 30mp sensor, paying $700 to get Digic X, IBIS, and the autofocus upgrades would be worth it and I would make the change in a heartbeat.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aye I couldn't agree more and that was why I was so shocked when they announced the R6 as a 20mp camera. I thought for sure that the R6 was going to be, essentially the R Mark 2. Paying $700 for IBIS alone would be worth it, imo :) However there are new rumors that an R Mark 2 is launching next year... Thanks for watching!

    You won’t notice the difference in megapixels unless you make large prints. I have an R and a R6. I can make 16x20 prints with both cameras and they look the same. If you shoot in a studio or on a tripod for landscapes the R is great. When you need the extreme speed of focusing and frames per second the R6 is a killer. Different tools for different jobs.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The average client isn't going to notice major pixel variations in a 16x20 print - for sure. That's certainly food for thought, however I think the argument here is the overall capabilities of the camera itself and its applicable uses for the future of any given photographer's needs. Is the average, basic studio photographer going to enjoy those extra pixels on the basic sale? Maybe and that's the whole point of investing in current modern gear that will be able to last at least four years until the next major round of cameras from Canon. Also think about the modern photographer and the plethora of education that is out there. Photographers are experimenting with all types of genres, all types out output for their artwork. I see a lot of folks who are entering into image competitions across the world. A stronger amount of pixels and data will help that artwork, vastly over a softer display. The strengths and advantages of an "all around" camera will serve the vast majority better than focusing it down to one or two specific genres and letting that limitation be the guide as to what is the "best camera."
      Thanks for watching!

      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right on and at the risk of tossing in more doubts, there are three new camera bodies coming this year. The early rumors suggest that one will be a low grade (full frame) replacement for the RP, the second could be a replacement for the R and the final is supposed to be a massive megapixel camera that will focus more on the sensor for photography than video. Potentially a replacement for the 1dX M3 - which shares the same sensor with the R6. If this new camera becomes THE sports camera, then most of the arguments in favor the R6 will be moot.

    THANK YOU for this demonstration. Finally...video number 768 in my viewing of absolutely everything on TH-cam comparing the R, the R6 and the R5 finally breaks my upgrade fever. I love my R so much, but whenever I watch videos about the 5 and 6, I get excited about the faster autofocus and a couple more stops of dynamic range and stabilisation and....not much more! The R5 is really visibly a class better but so expensive, then I see the R6 images and like you I think the R is overall way better for the money. But that autofocus....lol... Rinse, repeat. This video has finally broken the cycle cause it has to be about value for money and by THAT measure, the 4K currently overheating in my bank account is gonna stay there till the prices come down and I see what the firmware updates have brought to the table for the R5. Thanks again! Happy new subcriber.

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this question and inquiry - apologies on the delay in response. Since the time of this recording I've now switched to the R5 and use all RF glass exclusively. I can safely say that what I love the most is the software in the R5, vs the R. And with the recent announcement of the R6 Mark 2 being a slight increase in megapixel count, but a massive change to the software, I feel that Canon is focusing most of their innovation on faster AI responses/functionality rather than hardware improvements. There are definitely hardware improvements, but the impact they have to general photography vs the software, is a massive leap.
      I initially wanted the R5 for video options more than megapixel count. Now seeing the capabilities of the R6 M2 which has more useful and advantageous elements to video than the R5 - I'm truthfully a bit disappointed in Canon. I'm hoping they will include some of these video options in a firmware/software update to the R5 and that will dictate final thoughts.
      All in all - the cameras are good, it's just a question of the software :) Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts!

    Thank you for the comparison. I made my choice towards R, and I don't regret any dollar I spent on it. I also had a possibility to use R5 and R6 during my photoshoots with EF and RF lenses and found R6 in terms of customization a bit more limited than R5, but when I jumped into the settings for my R, I found them more than sufficient to quickly change modes.
    What I noticed is that the noice of R fits me better. I mean how the noice looks, it adds something I cannot explain to how I edit and the outcome looks fantastic.
    Autofocus in R5 and R6 is quicker, it follows animals. But I don't shoot them. I shoot portraits in motion, and for my old friend EF 85 1.2 the capabilities of focus in R where more than enough (I definitely found EF 85 better than RF, it makes the pictures more aerial).
    What I did wrong buying my R was that I spent so much time not having it in my bag 
    One card slot can be a significant con for those who store images twice. But… I've been using Canon EOS 6D and 6D II for many years, and have never been facing issues with my 1 card available for storing images in the camera (never used cheap cards, only SanDisk and Transcend).
    The EVF is different. In R it's slower comparing to DSLRs, but it's not significantly worse then in R5, I could not see any significant advantage in R5.
    So thank you once again for giving the simple but catchall comparison between images.
    Anyway, for those who are to make the choice yet, don't jerk out to your photo gear, develop with what you have it something not «best».
    I always remember what 1900 said in the end of the movie «The Legend of 1900»:
    Take piano: keys begin, keys end. You know there are 88 of them. Nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You're infinite.... And on those keys, the music that you can make... is infinite. I like that. That I can live by....
    You rolled out in front of me a keyboard of millions of keys, millions and billions of keys that never end. And that's the truth Max, that they never end. That keyboard is infinite... and if that keyboard is infinite, then on that keyboard there is no music you can play. You're sitting on the wrong bench.... That is God's piano.
    Christ, did you... did you see the streets, just the streets? There were thousands of them! Then how you do it down there, how do you choose just one... one woman, one house, one piece of land to call your own, one landscape to look at, one way to die...?
    So, photographers, create with your 88 keys the infinite music!

      I am so thankful that you took the time to share this beautiful analogy and words of wisdom! Truly our goal is to just create the art and whatever chosen tool we use, isn't as important as what we do with them to make that infinite music. So incredibly beautiful and thank you so very much for sharing!!

    Great comparison of the R and R6. Owning both of them myself and having done a good amount of pixel peeking I wonder if there was an AF or other issue with your particular example image. If I put my images side by side the difference in pixel count is visible. But my R6 images are as sharp as the R ones not showing such a noticeable softness - also given that the identical lense and settings are used.

    How about a R5 to a R3 comparison video ?

  • @77dris
    @77dris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did a similar test. I actually found a guy who took shots with all 3 cameras in natural light and studio situations for portrait, and also landscape.
    In Adobe Camera Raw you can select the MP output of your raw files, so I set them to all to 45 MP. In a "blind" comparison, I could not readily pick out the R5 files vs the R6 or R when viewed at 100% on a 5K monitor. They were all, very, very close.
    Further, when I used the Adobe Camera Raw "Enhance/Super Resolution" feature, then output to 45 MP, the R6 files actually looked better/sharper/more detailed than the R5 files.
    I sent these outputs (enhanced 45MP R6 vs 45MP R5) to graphic designer friends to be sure, and they also picked the R6 files as being "more detailed" than the R5 files every single time (even when using the best RF85 lens which should not be pushed to its limits by resolution).
    In fact what I found was that the lens and the focus accuracy will make a bigger difference in final detail than the advertised camera MP. So any size you can print with the R5, you can print with the R6 with little (Enhance output in ACR) to no (just change output to 45 MP in ACR) effort.

      Aye I hear you and the data is one that I think ultimately it boils down to what folks find they need in their art/business. Since the recording of this video I have now switched to the R5 and use RF glass. I love what I see and in many cases the details/data can be too much in certain situations. Thank you so much for the kind words about the video - I greatly appreciate it! At this stage right now I personally would opt for the R5 for the video options and the megapixels. However the R6 I think is still a very strong candidate, especially if you need a great new lens. Once the R3 hits the market and we see the price points, I suspect that Canon might offer their first discounts on both bodies (the R5 and R6) Depending on supply and demand though, they may not.
      There has been a rumored R1 that would be the spiritual successor to the R and my hope is that will get some traction once the R3 is launched. If not, then I would most likely be upgrading to the R5 at the end of this year.

    I think it's a good call to not get the R5 right now if you have the R. If you get down to the nitty gritty, the biggest benefits of the R5 are: dual card slots, more pixels, IBIS, better noise control, and better video.
    If you're used to and happy with using a single card slot, the 1st point isn't huge, especially since the only way you can use both card slots is to buy a super expensive (comparatively) CF Express card. More pixels really isn't a huge deal unless you're routinely cropping or pushing the image, which you probably won't do as much in a studio setting. IBIS only benefits you if you're shooting hand-held and you're likely to have shaky hands. While I think you can see the better noise control of the R5 and maybe could take advantage of it, it really only starts showing a huge difference once you get into the 6400+ ISO range and if you're in a studio, you'll control the light enough to not have to push it that far. And regardless of whether you're going to be doing a lot of video, truth is that 8k or even 4k isn't actually important. A lot of people get beastly cameras like this and end up just recording to 1080p and upscale anyway because it's easier to work with the files.
    So if you're not super compelled right now, then wait for the "R5s" or whatever (90MP mostly stills camera, worse video specs) and see if that's more along what you want. Cameras are just going to get better and better anyhow, so eventually the real "perfect camera" for you will show up.

    HOOOOLD UP A MINUTE, first of all, your opinion is based on pixel count?? I've had the Canon EOS R and I upgraded to R6. I've compared both side by side with a tripod, same lens, same settings and you cannot tell the difference in sharpness and to my surprise, the R6 looked even sharper than the R. I'm not sure why it looks so much softer in this video (did you use a tripod for this comparison?). Plus, in the real world, since were shooting handheld most of the time, the IBIS in the R6 vastly improves image sharpness, which you wouldn't get with the R. So, pixel counting aside, IBIS, immensely improved AF (Eye and Subject tracking), 2 card slots, newer sensor makes the R6 a huge upgrade to the R. Now, I don't know if I would spend almost $4K on the R5, I don't think it's worth it. the R6 is extremely sharp and this video does not do it justice. I do want to say though that the R is a great camera, no doubt, and I was also in the same position, should I upgrade or not, then I rented the R6 to try, sold the R a week later and Bought the R6 lol. Here is a link to show you the R6 being sharper than the R. I don't understand why, but it is. www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=458&Camera=1509&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=4&LensComp=458&CameraComp=1221&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=4

      Well first of all - I did explain in the beginning that there were other elements to both the R5/6 that make them a good choice for an upgrade. Specifically things like the newer processor, the stronger AI and so forth. I don't think that information is lost on the viewers. IBIS makes a great addition for sure, but it's pure strength is seen in video, not photography. It certainly helps, but it's positioned by Canon for video. The IS in lens has more impact for photography. Many videos on the TH-cam have discussed this as well as the boon of 2 card slots, etc. I wanted to see a video that pixel counted because that was one major element that I didn't find in my research. Hence my video.
      Your link showing the lens alignment grid is cool - I went through several images before I selected the ones I used for the video and the R6 was just not as full of detail as the R. I considered making a longer video showing various examples and as I looked at it, it felt like I was bashing the R6 over and over because the evidence of the pixel amount was clear. 20 megapixels is not bad at all - the new Sony is 24 if I'm not mistaken. The average client is not going to notice 20 vs 30 in most of their print order. However, this video was to simply show the variance between these three and discuss one of the major motivators for consumers which is price and what you get for it.
      But thank you for watching!

      @@RealityReimagined I understand, it's just that I did a similar comparison between the R and R6 and did not get that result. Strange, I don't know. the R6 seemed sharper for some reason. That's why I asked you if you used a tripod, I assume you did. Also I would try comparing in a more lit environment.
      Also I DO think the information is lost in viewers because I'm readin everyone'e comment and they are put off upgrading purely cuz of megapixels. The point is we already know less megapixels are gonna show a softer image, what is the point on reiterating that. The major motivators should be everything else, which is worth the upgrade.

    Hi David, Thanks for the great comparison. I always enjoyed your video and learnt a lot from it and your other videos too. I am going to buy EOS R and my main goal is to shoot fashion and portraits, as I know the 8 fps drops to 5 fps in continuous AF mode so my only concern is if 5 fps in Continuous AF mode can freeze a model sharply when she jumps, or a walking model in a catwalk or a model walking along the beach toward the camera or walking across the frame? I would highly appreciate you for your valuable time to help me! God bless you! Ali

      Thank you so much for the kind words - I greatly appreciate it. :) To answer your question, I really feel that it's a question of your technique on sensing the motion a split second before it happens. I used to photograph a large dance academy. During those years I learned to be able to anticipate movement both while looking through the viewfinder and my peripheral vision. If you know the flow of the event (runway walk, etc.) and know the optimal space where your talent is going to flow through, I believe 5fps should be fine. The image should be sharp, but I do worry that you might be better to look at the R6 or R5. The main reason being the improved AI face detection software.
      Since the recording of this video, I have upgraded to the R5 and there is a noticeable difference in how well the camera detects the eyes - WHEN - the subject is profiled to the camera. I still see the R5 locking onto the eye when the model is looking right at the camera (and it can see both eyes) as fast as the R does. But knowing that your work is definitely going to be a lot of motion and you don't always have the chance to have them look right at you - you may need that better software.
      The R6 is a considerable jump in price, but over the long run of your work - it might be the best choice.
      Let me know if you have any questions and what you chose to do. Thanks for watching!!

    Thank you David. A reasonable and well-argued rational. We too owned the R prior to facing this same conundrum. COVID-19 changed everything for us. We were a portrait studio but of course safety concerns shut us down. We looked elsewhere for another revenue stream that would be safer for us and our clients. We live in ranch country and everyone also seems to own a dog. Shooting out-of-doors, even in our arctic winters is a much safer option. Animal/people eye detection is something we could use. More pixels gives us greater crop flexibility in addition to greater editing options. And the focus tracking ability is absolutely essential for dogs who are more active and energetic than horses. It was a no-brainer - we now own the R5. The 70 - 200 f2.8 RF is our workhorse lens while we keep the 24 - 70 f2.8 RF on the R. Canine/equine photography is safer in these COVID times and we are so pleased that technology has offered us products that make our work so much easier and more efficient. We are Canadians. The price of admission was steep, but we have faith Canon has given us the best tools now and for our future needs.

      Right on!! Not only the investment in your business, but the PIVOT to find new ways to adapt in the Covid19 world we currently live in. I'm proud to see that you have adapted and that it's going well. The new AI is hands down better than the first iteration in the R and I'm disappointed that Canon isn't providing an update to the R with that tech. I can't imagine the internal tech changed enough that the new AI is tech dependent on it. So my instincts tell me this is another way to further separate these three cameras, in the minuscule ways that Canon typically does with their gear.

    I think the fact the R6 will give you minimal noise and similar colour as the other 2 is fantastic! Just use your sharpening tool and presto! Easy to get sharp images and at the same time reduce your storage space! Today most photographers are over shooting, over killing the job. In 2004 my boss back then shot a billboard campaign using the canon 20D, 8megapixel crop sensor! It turned out great! Client was very happy the colours, contrast, clarity where enough, I wouldn’t dream of shooting my weddings with anything more then a 20megapixel sensor. Even the Fuji crops sensor I often use which is my personal camera the XT4, 26 mega pixel is overkill for weddings, I have never had any complaints with the quality enlargements or poster I have supplied using my 20 mega pixel canon IDX or Fuji Bodies. 20 million pixels are a heap of amount of pixels. Stop giving in to marketing hype that is forcing photographers to keep upgrading constantly!

    • @RealityReimagined

      I hear you - I really do. However I've had the benefit of doing a lot of image work in Photoshop over the years and I have seen greater results, across the board with a higher megapixel count. There is a noticeable difference to not only the final artwork, but what I can do with it in Photoshop. I'm glad that the crop sensors and 20mp has serviced your needs as a photographer, but with all due respect, I do not believe that should be the measure to set the standard for all photographers. I would never return to a lower MP count, after seeing the work over the past two years from my R; simply a step in the wrong direction.
      However I do strongly agree with you that the marketing hype has influenced too many photographers. In my travels as an educator, I have gotten so many messages from folks who are beginners or have just stepped into the industry/business in the past two years and their first question was "so do I need to get that R5?!" And I ask them why they think they need to - every time. The answers show me that critical thought of how the camera will help their business, isn't the guiding issue - it's the marketing of it being "the next best thing."
      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and opinions - even though I disagree, I welcome the discussion!!

      @@RealityReimagined It all depends what size output you print and on what substrate? Of course if I was commissioned to shoot a 2 metre backlight jewelry or glamour campaign which will be printed on a 600dpi x600dpi large format high resolution printer on a print-mode of 200 Density 16 pass, then 20 mega pixels would struggle compared to a medium format or higher resolution Full frame.
      But I rarely do work like that which requires that kind of output. Everyone has different requirements. Agree most what you said. I didn’t mean to come across as my way should be the industry standard. Not at all. But doing weddings and portraits I do speak for a lot of photographers also.

    Excellent comparison video - one the best....if not THE best I've seen. Thank you. My main issue is the 20mp sensor on the R6 and I see the sense in how you thought the reason was. However, as a photographer who likes to crop more or less each imagee, the 20mp sensor would struggle to keep resolutiton to an acceptable level. The 45mp is probably too much!!! so the R seems to be a good compromise but with older technology. Decisions decisions!!!

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would be almost the same comparison as the R vs the R6 as the sensor is the exact same resolution in the R is the same from the 5D MK 4. The processor in the 5D MK 4 is the Digic 6 and that will make a bit of difference in overall color and other data processing, but I can't imagine it's too far off from the R. Canon has always done a great job of managing color space in their cameras and I do not believe that a major change was made with the R. So this video's comparison of the R images to the R6 would be a pretty close comparison of the R6 vs the 5D MK 4.

    I've shot Canon DSLR for the last 5 years and love em. I looked at the R then the RP when it came out but, it didn't 0ffer enough to make me switch from my current 6D and 5D MKII. After the launch of the R5/R6 I took another look at mirror less. The Frame Rate and AF along with the IBIS, are a big selling point to me (I use some long Glass). I don't shoot in a studio, I'm a run and gunner plus wildlife. I do very little video, If I want video I'll grab my Video cam. When the R came out I felt it was time for a new camera, and I enjoyed the new system so much that I sold all but two of my EF lenses and bought a bunch of RF glass. I expose properly and don’t have to worry about recovering too much data in the shadows. I rarely shoot over 1600. Even if the camera can handle it, I just don’t. Never have. And I completely agree on the high ISO - I very rarely go any higher than 800, but working with these new lights has required me to push that boundary a touch. @@RealityReimagined Thanks for posting. Also, mind the fact that the format cropped (which is super35 in cinema, which is the film roll was put sideways, so 24mm width and 14mm height to preserve the 2x3 ratio) gives a deeper depth of field (dof), and has a more "tunnel" like view. While large format, like IMAX, for the same focal length looks "wider" than FF and gets even more shallower (check a dof calculator app). Generally speaking crop sensor vs FF you have to stop about 2 stops to get the same shallowness - so f5.6 on FF would be f2.8 on crop for the same field of view (so if you have a 50mm on FF, and the crop factor is x1.5, you divide 50 by 1.5, and you get 35mm for the crop sensor to have the same field of view, that's the angle of view - that is why going wide on smaller formats is such a pain - and going long and deep, keeping things in focus, is hard on larger formats like IMAX).

      Thank you so much my friend! The RAW files produced from the R5 shouldn't be too much bigger than the 5D MK IV. The file format is a bit different and that is the only thing that required an update from Photoshop or other digital editors, to be able to process the file format itself. Photoshop is becoming a bit more graphics heavy than processor heavy, so I would look to that first to upgrade. Memory is also key and the newer DDR5 memory is pretty fast. Oh I hear you and I completely understand. I'm working on a new video that I will share hopefully this week, to update everyone about my upgrade to the R5, but also some interesting advice that was given to a workshop set of students, by a prominent photographer in our industry. Essentially they told everyone that if they are coming from the DSLR series of Canon cameras, they should consider buying new RF lenses, over the new mirrorless bodies. You still need a new mirrorless to use the RF with, but in regard to budget it makes sense to spend your budget on a good RF lens and get a more affordable R or R6, vs the R5.
      The R5 was recommended if you are interested in doing video work, as it is a vast leap forward from the R and has some better options (slightly) than the R6.

I think you should have compared 20 megapixels with 20 megapixels so, downscale the 30 and 45 megapixels to 20 and check the result. If you want to upscale 20 to 30, you should use real software and not photoshop (like Gigapixel AI).

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hear where you are coming from, however I'd like to establish again the main platform of what this video was meant to show. Simply put, we more often than not, want to take our base images SOOC and generally push them further and enlarge them, not reduce them. So a comparison of the base file and the pixels at hand, is the best starting place to show that. I also challenge the statement that Photoshop is not real software when it comes to resizing an image. Keep in mind, I'm not sponsored by Adobe at all nor do I think I ever will, mainly because I will tell the truth about how they make a lot of mistakes every year with their software and business practices. I've also have been using Topaz's software for many, many years and I think they do a great job. I also think their software is very circumstantial to get amazing, consistent results. This is where Adobe has outpaced the other markets. I'm glad you've clearly gotten value out of Gigapixel and I would hope you can understand that AI is amazing, but simply is not the margin to define "real" software.

      Right on - thank you for the kind words about the video, I appreciate it! Given what you are capturing and the speed at which you may have to take the shot, I wonder if what would help you to get sharper images is the settings first, more so than new gear? Gear will make a difference for sure, but what shutter speed/aperture are you shooting at when you capture the trains moving at higher speeds?
      Gear recommendation - I would probably go with the R6 since that would be the most stable upgrade from the Canon T6. The money you would save by purchasing the R (over the R6) could help you get a new lens, but depending on your budget, I would go for the better AI and software that is in the Canon R6. The R is a great, great choice too and nothing wrong there if you go with that. Upgrade the lens and you are in business.

      Oh wow...I was already to say the R until you said weddings. One of the biggest requested features from the masses, for the R5/6 was dual card slots, precisely for one-off events like a wedding. Not having that second card slot is a dangerous risk with something like wedding photography. In all of the years that I photographed weddings, I never had a card fail. However it does happen and it can be devastating to your client and your business. I believe the R is a better camera than the R6, in regard to the over all quality of the image. However the R6 will be a better camera for weddings due to the dual card slots, the video capabilities (if you ever decide to go that route) and the improvements on the processor.
      I wish I could definitively tell you to get one over the other, but I can't. They are both good cameras and the above mentioned criteria is the only thing I can offer in the way of advice. Thanks for watching and good luck on your new wedding work!

    The resolution of 20MP is enough for my needs. To make a comparisment that makes any sense you should have recalculated the higher res images to 20MP instead of blowing the 20 MP up to and rezising the 45 MP down to 30 and next to this you compared all of it at 200%. First one should ask what res he/she really needs. If 20MP is enough, one should scale the hiigher resolutions down and compare all three results at 100%.
    At ISO 1600 there is the different image prozessor visible, showing a warmer and mor platic-like result at the R.
    But If I do this comparisment at ISO 6400 (which I often need) or higher I find the R6 IQ is definitly better than the R´s. But both are blown away by the R5´s result. But I belong to the group of people, who can/want not afford an R5 and do not want to handle the bigger files. I do not work for any customer, who needs 45 MP and wants to pay for it (yet).

      Aye I definitely see where you are coming from and can understand. I just generally feel that regardless of what your clients needs are, the likely hood of you needing to upscale an image is far greater of a possibility than needing to downscale. So having more data to work with, will help that end result. But again the R6 is a good camera for sure and I'm glad that it is putting a modern, mirrorless body into the hands of folks who can use it for a few years to come. Beside the price my argument was that I knew that this camera could take really good professional pictures and if I was not able to get the results I wanted, It for sure was not because of the camera, but because of my lack of skills. I just have try harder. I like to know that my good results are a product of my skillset and not a product of a semi-automated camera. By selfish reasons, I am happy you are not upgrading, now I can continue to copy your camera setting in my learning process and expect similar results... or by second thought.. maybe not.. The resolution difference is an issue, but for most uses the 20MP sensor is just fine. Most people will not be zooming 500% into their images. Other than the resolution, the R6 is a better camera overall than the R, particularly with regard to dynamic range and autofocus. The R6 has the same sensor as the 1DX mkIII and you don't really see anyone complaining about the resolution. It's one of the best sensors Canon has put out. It doesn't beat out the R5, but of course you have to spend some serious cash to get the R5.

      Aye I agree that the R6 has a lot of good functionality that rivals or tops the R - especially with the new AI AF. However the comparisons to the 1DX M3 being a benchmark, I think will soon be out-dated as well. Canon is clearly pushing forward with mirrorless and there are now rumors that 2021 will see a followup to the 1DX M3 and it will be curious to see what sensor is put into that body. Also looking at Sony and their newly launched bodies this summer, as well as the new bodies for 2021, they are pushing above 20mp as a baseline.
      I guess what I'm hoping folks do is to begin to think about "the new normal" in regard to how far their images can go. More and more folks are pushing their artwork beyond the norms of the past, as new software takes advantage of all the new gear's capabilities. Time will tell.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@RealityReimagined I definitely understand the desire for more resolution. As an R owner, I wrestled with the decision to buy an R6. And honestly, I'm still tempted to take it back and get an R5 just for some future-proofing. I haven't decided yet. In most image comparisons I've seen up to 100% crop, there isn't a lot of difference between the R5 and R6 in normal conditions. I'm trying to let that be my guide. As long as I fill the frame and don't crop a lot, which I don't, I should be fine. But I kind of worry that some day I'll need to crop a lot and I'll notice the drop in resolution.

    Hi, nice video but I am going to disagree to a point. I have the R and recently added the R5 and I think if you had have used an RF lens (85 f1.2 or the 28-70 f2) in your comparisons the difference would have been easier to see. The EF lens were never designed to resolve that amount of detail so the images are closer than they actually are. I have looked at two images side by side in fixed lighting using these lenses and the R5 not only is much sharper it has better noticeably dynamic range than the R too and therefore you don’t need to push the image as hard in post. Worth renting and seeing the difference as it is clearly far superior. Also the massive difference in autofocus speed and agility between the R and R5, not withstanding the functionality all adds to the package and explains the difference in price, beyond just looking at megapixel differences on glass both cameras were not designed to be used with to maximise their performance.

      First off - thank you for watching the video and for offering the advice and information! I am definitely intrigued and did wonder about the lens being an issue. My feeling was that if the lens was the same on all three bodies, then a sense of control could be established for this "experiment" and that the results would yield some sort of comparison. However I hear what you are saying and will absolutely try this. I do not currently have the R5 or an RF lens, so I will have to rent them again. However I am up for that cost to explore the possibilities.
      Thank you for this "challenge" and excited to see the results - will share them here as soon as I can!

    It depends on what you are shooting. For wildlife/bird/action photography, the R5 reigns supreme from Canon. The Eye AF, AF tracking, and 45 mp are worth every penny. I recently took a Hooded Merganser picture (catching crawfish) and cropped 75% of it and it still has good detail.

      Oh I completely agree - the new AI eye detection for humans and animals is amazing and I sincerely wish they would have updated the firmware into the R. The R is very much a viable candidate for this line up and I can't imagine that the sensor and processor changed so much to allow for the new AI. We'll see, I guess, but I doubt they will keep the new software in the newer models to incentivize the upgrade. Thanks for watching!

    I agree completely with your analysis. If Canon had made the R6 with 30MP, I would probably have sold my R and bought the R6. But, since they did not, I’m not willing to give up the resolution for the added features of the R6, and the price jump to the R5 is just to high for me. So, I’ll keep my beloved R!!!

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aye it still baffles me that they made this choice and I know the retort from so many is "the R6 has the same sensor as the 1DX Mark 3!" That's not enough for me. Just because that sensor was put into a DSLR a few years back and they still charge $6k for that body, means nothing. It's short on the MP and the R is still a great camera. However to be upfront and fair, I've upgraded (since the recording of that video) to the R5 - which was my plan all along, for the video options. Loved my R and would happily still shoot with one as it's just dandy for photography - the video options aren't, compared to the R5/6. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching!!

    Your results are completely in line with my experience of the R6. Thanks for doing this video and being so honest. Buying the R6 was a tough decision for me. Since I use my camera for video a lot too, the video and autofocus specs made me go with the R6. I am very happy with my choice, but it was a also a budget choice, since I would never pay the price of the R5 for a camera body (as an enthusiast!) and I would rather get a great lens. Like they say date your camera body, but marry your lenses. But yeah, sometimes I feel like I should have bought the R5, but than I remember that no one besides people that pixel peep will ever notice the difference! Canon sure does play bad pschological games with us ;)

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right on and I'm glad you made the choice that you did. The R6 is not a bad camera at all, but those dollars saved from the R5 can be used for better glass, as you've stated. Plus it seems like the R market is about to get even further saturated with small little changes among various models, which is one of the more worse practices from Canon. They make various bodies that are slightly different from one another and confuse the market. If I didn't have such an expense, I would switch to Sony. ;) Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

    I have an R, and it’s a great little camera. So good, in fact, that I have seen nothing else from the Canon full frame mirrorless range that would tempt me to upgrade. I really don’t shoot video, so I need no more than the R offers, and there is no point in my considering the R5 at that price. The R6 just doesn’t tick enough boxes. There is, of course a rumour of a possible R5S, fewer video features and lots more pixels and photo features. Now *that* would be tempting.

    Still will have to live with that. Drawbacks of R just doesn't justify buy R and not R6. The AF and the IBIS is so much better in R5/6, since I don't earn money with photography R5 is out of question. :)

      The showed comparison is telling nothing. The 20 MP are enough to work with. If you will compare the resolution between the R6 and R, you will not notice a big difference. You have to test it on stationary objects and not on a person which is moving where small lighting changes can affect the perceptual sharpness by minor contrast changes (caused by lighting)

      According to Canon's spec the R can shoot up to 8 fps in Raw (in AI Servo) and 5fps in one shot. I believe the R6 has improved on that, due to IBIS. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Thanks for a great visual review! I've been using a Sony A6300 for the past 5 years and have been debating making the jump to my first full frame for a quite while now. I desperately want to switch to Canon and have been completely torn between the R and R6. (In all honesty I still am!) My logic, go for a used R and spend the money on the RF glass.
    However, I have reservations about the autofocus and lack of IBIS. I had a play with an R about 18 months and actually found the autofocus really frustrating :/ heeelp

    • @RealityReimagined
      @RealityReimagined  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh boy - do I hear you on this and I have to agree. The AI focus is great in the R, as long as the person is standing flat to you, they aren't wearing sunglasses and you have good lighting. Otherwise you more often than not have to help out the AI by targeting the region of their face and tell the camera to follow it. Then it locks onto the eye. I have had the most issues with side-profile images and only one eye for detection. Sadly it also wants to jump to what it perceives as the most "in detail object" near to the camera so things like walls and trees, it will try to focus on that and then move back to the eye.
      That has been improved with the R6/R5 and the new version of the AI. IBIS is going to be helpful, but in my experiences only with either very low light conditions or if you plan on doing any film-making. Since you are making the brand leap, I feel like the best option is to get the R6 since it is the best they have to offer right now. However I STRONGLY urge you to wait a couple of months if you can, since the new bodies are on their way. No idea when they will be released, but it will effect the price point by a little.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching!

    This is a very limited review. The difference between the R, R5 and R6 for photographers is more than just the resolution and noise. I agree that R is a much better camera than the social media made it look when it appeared. But I do think that the R6 has a lot of advantages over the R in many situations. Better autofocus, probably the best on the market, more advanced image stabilisation with the added in-body stabilisations and the innovative way in which lens based and sensor-based collaborate, again probably the best system in the market at that price., faster shooting, ... My R is sometimes a bit slow even though the majority of my pictures are not action shots. My bet is that the fact that cannon didn’t use the sensor of the R for the R6 but chose the lower resolution one from the 1Dx mark III is because the readout speed of the sensor of the R is too low to reach the shooting speeds they wanted to reach with the R6. It may in fact be the readout speed that also causes the strong crop at 4K and not the lack of processing power. After all the M6 mark II has the same processor but can handle about the same amount of pixels at higher FPS for photography and I believe it also does full frame 4K video.
