I have listened to a lot of photographers on youtube. I have to say you are amongst the very best. Lots of plain talking, not getting too complicated, or technical. Excellent!!
Even though I can nerd out with the best of them, I love your simple, straightforward approach to something that could have gotten nerdy very quickly. I feel like I’ve gotten a great education on the R6 and RF lenses through your videos. Thanks KJ!
Great video! I agree with all your points and got the R6 instead of the R5 as well (for all the same reasons). I also made the same mistake at a wedding with the low shutter speed, like you not realizing I went down so low and had a couple blurryish images. I found a setting in the "orange" menu on page 2, to set the range on the shutter speed so I won't accidentally go down that far again. For me I never need a shutter lower than 250 so it works. Thanks again! Love your videos!
I use the viewfinder and flip screen interchangeably. To be honest it's just a hell of a lot more comfortable using the viewfinder. Like Katelyn said… Holding the camera out is a pain on the arms.
@@MicheletDiez I like the screen when I want some extreme angle because I am lazy and am not going to bend over backwards to see through the viewfinder… But those are rare instances! 🤣
Your perspective is very valuable to me. I’m considering the R6. I’m not a full-time pro, so the R5 seems way too expensive for me. And, as a graphic designer, I’ll second your comment on MPs. When designing for bus wraps, billboards and the like you don’t usually need 40MP images, because the viewing distance is much, much greater than a framed photo or album. Even 20MP works on a 30ppi billboard printout. It seems like many photographers make the mistake of thinking huge, outdoor graphics are printed at 300ppi. They can be, but usually that’s much higher than necessary for beautiful, sharp-looking images at really big sizes and long viewing distances. Thanks for your insights.
Katelyn, you are nice, funny, direct, no nonsense and extremely informative. You hit the points that people have the most questions about. You are not constantly trying to sell people unnecessary equipment. I had a feeling that you were going to buy at least one RF lens. Your thought process for not replacing all of your lenses is sound. Keep the formula that you have you are doing an outstanding job.
Low shutter sound... Great call, I've got caught out the same as you did. I was second shooter, helping a friend out and and he said, "You're shutter is so quiet, it's insane". Only when checking back on a couple of shots during a break did I notice that it's a fraction OOF. It's so easy to get down to a low shutter speed and you get that cold feeling down the back of your neck. Great advice on the channel from you guys.
I have been watching your videos on the R6. I really really love how you speak in normal terms and not get all technical . I really appreciate it. Your videos are having me sold on getting the R6. You provide real life situations on how you use the R6 and I appreciate it. I have seen other videos about the camera and one in particular was good and the rest felt like a I was at a store.. Your video came on my feed and felt compelled to give it a go. I commented on one of your videos saying I have a 6D and going to something new as the R6 is so nerve wracking because it is so different and foreign. I really gather that you are very happy with the R6 🙂.
I got the R6 after extensive research (I have the Canon M50 and the Canon Rebel T6i) and am thrilled with how sharp it is even with the kit lens! I got some other lenses but haven’t even tried them yet because I’m so pleased with the kit lens.
I just got my R6 today and I immediately noticed the difference. I traded my 5DS to R6, bit of a stretch budget wise but I don’t regret getting it at all. I watched your videos before purchasing my R6 and I am now excited to do my next wedding gig. Thank you so much 😊
@@KatelynJames It really should be labeled differently - but the standard face detect one shot is not tracking in between shots. That's what is confusing people. The real mode you want to be on is face detect with servo enabled - where you set the initial track point - and it continuously tracks. It's misleading to have face detect be tracking. I've shot multiple weddings and tons of other shoots with dual r6. When you get the settings this way you won't look back.
I searched and searched TH-cam for information about whether I should get the r5 or r6 mark ii, and I couldn’t find real world examples of the pros and cons. This video is exactly what I was looking for, but was unable to find. I bought the mark ii which is a bit different than the r6, but I agree with everything you have included in your video. I think the eye tracking is a bit better in the mark ii, but I haven’t used it very much yet. Supposed to be about the same as the r3 which is my main camera and had awesome AF eye detection. I wonder if rf lenses work better for eye tracking speed. I read that they do, but I jumped ship from Nikon, so I had to buy the rf lenses. Anyway thanks for making the video I really wanted. All of your r6 videos, actually.
I'm writing this for anyone watching your (great) video. You may know this by now, but if you have a white box with arrows around the eye/face while using eye/face tracking, there is a setting that makes for a much faster method. Look in the AF menus for "Initial AF point" and select the top choice. Another factor is Then you get a box without arrows that turns blue around the eye/face when it's locked and with a completely different operation. I generally leave the focus point somewhere mid frame where it's easy to see. Aim it at the eye/face you want, half press and hold the shutter to recompose at will while the camera keeps the blue box on the eye/face you started on. Far too many times I had a poor composition on my 5D on someone because I was concentrating on keeping that focus point on my target. I still do some but now it's totally my fault where I had at least a weak excuse before. I tried to use that white box with arrows on my R5 and it was tough with moving targets. But I didn't try long because it was so irritating and slow to move to other targets. With the other setup, to change targets, just let off the shutter, aim the focus point at your new target and half press the shutter release again. In Roberto Valenzuela's video at 9:22, it shows the irritating white box with arrows:th-cam.com/video/UwMM4F3jzNY/w-d-xo.html Settings involved for my favorite method: AF Operation> SERVO AF, and AF Method>Face+box, then be sure eye detection is enabled. I've been using an R5 but I have an R6 on it's way to replace the 5D MKIII I use for my 2nd camera at weddings. The focus system is one of the top two reasons I'm doing that. Instant feedback on exposure changes in the viewfinder is the other big reason. These cameras are so fast to use. Tell Tyler he's doing an great job too.
I absolutely LOVED that you picked up a 28-70 f/2! It's one of my dream lenses too! I personally am prepping to get an 85 1.2 DS once my RF 70-200 2.8 is paid off, and I can't wait to have in my hands that little bit extra the defocus smoothing gives. As someone mostly interested in studio work, it's hard for me to get excited about shooting outdoors. Hoping that'll be that nugget of inspiration I need right now, quite like you said at the end shooting with the R6 has been for you! But I seriously adore how pragmatic you're being with these decisions. I personally, on the other end, look forward to getting the R5s because 41-45MP isn't ENOUGH to get me excited. But it really is a total drag the idea of spending wild amounts of money just on MEMORY CARDS. With you on THAT for sure. I also love your honesty about eye AF. People on TH-cam really don't understand the pressure true working professionals are put under to get that shot. And as great as it is, there ARE limitations.
Just got mine yesterday here in the UK ! You cannot find one anywhere, online or in the shops ! I had decided to wait until after christmas to get my R6, I popped int o a local camera shop where I work yesterday, to find the RF 35mm 1.8 lens , to buy it for the R6 when I found one. The shop assistant went into the back of the shop to get the box for the lens, and came out and told me he had some good news ! Two had just arrived that morning ( with the 24- 105 mm lens ) . They had over 20 pre orders for the R6, but said if I wanted one I could have it! I was buying the 35mm lens for £430, but ended up paying £2850 for the whole camera with the lens ! It was dark when I got home, I was blown away by the EVF, but was suprised when I put my L series 70 - 200mm on the camera, it would not take pictures with it , I am going to try it again today , in full daylight.
Appreciated Tyler giving us an update on the video side of things. Very helpful. Also important to know about the eye-focus concerns. Totally agree about the importance of an EVF. I think some TH-camrs who mostly shoot indoors, have disproportionately influenced camera manufacturers to drop it from newer mirrorless cameras. So thanks for making the case for EVFs.
I’m currently looking into the R6 in place of my Mark IV’s. Your videos make me very excited for this! Even the look of your videos with the R6 is crazy good. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this update! I am with you on not doing the zombie hold with the camera out at arms lenght. I have a lot more stability as well the point you made about being able to see better in bright situations.
Thank you so much for all of the R6 videos! I agree 100% with using touch and drag vs. eye tracking! And I loved your reasoning for still using the viewfinder. So helpful to hear someone articulate that!
I really love your channel! I have the r5 on the way with the 28-70 f2 so you have me super excited! I’m going from a 6D mii so I may pass out the first time I use it!
Just bought a new R6, 500 € off (canon cashback) ! And a battery grip for free ! I need to learn how to use it but the menu is pretty similar to my 5DIII's. Stabilisation, focus, dynamic range, noise at high iso etc are a big improvement !
All valid points. Practically, this review makes perfect sense. From the beginning, I never believed I could reliably use eye tracking on a wedding day. This just confirmed so many things.
Great to see a video review of the R6 for stills shooters and isnt hung up on the video functions. I think you’re touch & drag focus method is the right approach to shooting weddings because The eye tracking proponents never explain how you’re supposed to work that situation quickly when there’s a field of people moving around in front of you
I was considering getting an R6 as a second body but after 2 months with the R5 I will go with a second R5 instead - the detail is incredible, and the colours and files are really nice to work with. It is really nice to be able to crop half of the image away and still have a 22.5 megapixel image. The CFExpress Cards are incredibly fast and the time you notice it is burst shooting 45 megapixel photos at 20 frames a second and still not hitting a buffer - taking the photos off the camera is nice too, transferring off at around 1GB per second. I am shooting with eye tracking, but I have the SET button in a custom mode set to pull the focus to the centre of the frame - without the SET button I wouldn’t use the eye AF though, I am using the 28-70 f2 as well, really love it.
Hi Katelyn. Thank you for a very informative video. Concerning your last point regarding slow shutter speed, my EOS R allows me to sync my shutter speed to the lens focal length and this works automatically for zooms. Menu 1 chapter 3 there is an ISO speed setting with a 'Min.shutter spd' option. At one time I thought this just allowed you to set a minimum speed for your camera/lens, but if you go into this option you can set it to Manual (which will set a single minimum speed) or Auto which is clever and allows you to pick a speed that changes with the focal length of your lens and this actually changes as you zoom in and out!! This also allows you to modify what the camera would normally allow as a minimum by moving a point along a scale, really cool. Try it and see if it works for you. Best ...Ed
Have you figured out a workaround/setting update for the initial problem you had with the first memory card filling up & not notifying you it was full & just continuing to record on the second memory card?? I SO appreciate all of these videos on the R6!! I got my R6 about 10 days ago - shot 3 family sessions with it (plus lots of my own kids & dog for practice) and I'm gearing up to shoot my first wedding with it this weekend!!
I use the viewfinder as well. Holding the camera out to use the LCD screen with a heavy lens doesn’t work for me, my hands shake too much so whatever focus point I choose ends up getting shifted cause I can’t hold the camera steady when it’s extended like that.
Jared Polin has lots of videos showcasing the dual pixel auto focus tracking, and in his user guide for the EOS R6 he might talk about how to set the start point for the eye and face tracking.
One of the best videos I found about R6. Thanks for making this. Though I have a quick question, have you used Sigma 18-35mm f1.8mm lens? If yes then please answer...The 28-70mm f2 RF lens is significantly sharper than Sigma 18-35mm f1.8?
I appreciate that for working professionals, this is a huge boon. For some hobbyists, the process is often as important as the result. I shoot with a 5D classic because I enjoy it and I find it challenges me and forces me to find solutions. I also fine the output to be more "filmic" than modern cameras.
Just a tip for you Katelyn, I am mostly a sports photographer, however when I do my off track people shots I use "Eye detection auto focus" You will need to assign a separate button for this. This is not eye tracking, it just places a green box on the eye in an instant. If you move your camera the box will move too, in which case just press the button again. I use back button focus as my usual focus button and the next button for eye detection auto focus. It works for me.
Are you using this setting for a single person, multiple people, or both? Can you explain how eye detection focus is different from eye tracking? I can relate to your focusing needs because I'm a former photojournalist & did tons of sports.. My cameras are always set on high speed shutter, follow focus & back button no matter what I'm shooting--I shoot family documentary now & there's always movement. I want to continue like this with the added benefits of sharp eyes & faces but I can't figure out how best to do this. Apparently, this requires two separate buttons & can't be done in just one setting? I've messed with my focus settings so much that now I don't know which way is up!!
@@sherrypeters278 For a single person it focuses on the closest or clearest eye. Multiple people in one shot mode it focuses on the closest eye of the closest person or eye that stands out most, you can your move your camera aim towards a particular person and it will change from one to the other. In AI Servo place your initial focus point over the person you want to focus on then when you push focus button it will face track or eye track that person. Eye detection focus (EDF) works in one shot mode, by focusing on the eye, but it doesn't track it, so you compose, focus and shoot. You need to set up a custom button for this. If the person moves or you reposition your camera you have to push the eye detection focus button again. (see below for EDF in AI Servo) Eye tracking works in one shot (auto detect and track) and ai servo (press focus button to detect and track) by selecting "tracking" auto focus method and enabling "eye detection". Once focused on the eye it will track it. (You need to set subject to detect to people ..or animal). This can be done via a menu or with the R6 default button settings). Now you can combine both methods. Select AI Servo. Set the focus method to "tracking" but DON"T enable "eye detection" Now press focus and your camera will track the head only. Now if you press the button you customized to "eye detection focus" it will focus on the eye as I said before, but now it will track (even with eye tracking disabled) .... so now you have the best of both worlds... press focus, track heads...press EDF button, track eyes. I use back button focus (AF-ON) and depth of field button for eye detection focus. Sound confusing...it's not :) A third focus point option is to set an area of your screen up (top right) to respond to your thumb movement (see in menus). You can shoot using the viewfinder with your finger on the shutter button and your thumb moving the focus point to where you want it. (Focus and recompose is out now) They all have their place in different situations. Experiment lots, try the different modes in different situations and you will find which is best for yourself. It's an amazing camera .... very customizable
I really appreciate your help, thank you! So in other words, this two-button set up is how you switch from eye detection to eye tracking. I assume tracking, and not eye detection, would be good with a wider lens & multiple people at a distance, moving around as well as toward me, for example. I wouldn't be as worried about the eyes, I'd just want sharp faces. Out of curiosity, what mode do you use when shooting sports? What do you do when shooting a landscape with no people--touch focus? What does the camera do in tracking mode when there are no people? I'm so used to focusing & recomposing and I don't want to stop and use the touchscreen. Is there a way to use both simultaneously, without needing to change modes in the menu? Are touchscreen and other AF modes mutually exclusive? I've got my settings screwed up that now my touchscreen is disabled anyway! And I'm set on tracking without eye detection. And finally, I've got this white box at the bottom of my screen. When I push back button focus it turns into a grid of little blue boxes that move around as I move the camera. No idea how this happened, given the settings I'm at. I know this is a great camera but it's so cumbersome right now.....
I've noticed with my R6 that my images straight out of camera were almost dull and had a gray tone to them. I changed my camera mode from standard to portrait mode I was curious to what shooting mode you had your camera set to under the menu options
As a father of three with the fourth one coming and as a wedding photographer I recently "down" graded from 1DX2 to R5. And I got to say I agree with everything you say in your video. Appart from the fact that I do need billboard size photo's so I took the R5 instead.
Thanks for the tips! Particularly - don't rely on that slow shutter sound to cue you that your ISO is off. Good catch! I think the eye-detect *may* take a tad to lock-in vs with single-point the camera isn't even needing to "think" before trying to focus. I agree that it's something to experiment with. I've shot my R6 in low-ish light, but not in really low light yet and that may also play into it.
Hey Katelyn you mentioned a lot of small extra points I didn't expect would be a problem. Thanks for your insight! I would be curious if you could make a video showing the print sizes you do with the R6.
I don’t use the eye tracking all the time. But what I did is put that function as a custom button on and off when it’s a single person instead of a group
Yes. I just discovered you could do this and might try it. I'm actually comfortable using eye-tracking, but having it as a custom button might be nice, too.
This was an enlightening presentation. A welcome break from all the "pixel peeping" stuff. Just the, "yeah I was wondering about that" real information. Good luck with the new baby on the way, and stay safe.
I really enjoyed this! Sharing your experience with the camera is so much better than the other videos I've watched. After watching this, I feel like picking an R6 as a backup camera. Thank you for sharing!
Oh my goshhhh, Yessss I 100% agree with everything you said! Using the viewfinder, the scary and surprising moment you realize you're shooting at like 1/30 and weren't paying attention. Same girl, same. One thing I found out that kind of bugs me is there's a button that I can accidentally touch on my screen with my cheek "touch screen shutter" disable or enable - Do you know how to remove that? Because it's highly annoying to me.
im really glad i came across this video! im currently looking to upgrade from a 5d (classic) and a c100 mkii. and i have been debating between the R5 and R6. and very hesitant on the r5 due to the CF express card and having to work around the new codec. i hesitate on the r6 because of the megapixels. ill definitely be getting the R6 thank you!
I read and heard some had broken hot shoes , have you heard about this. Another, some say they wish they had the R5 because it can take more hard wear because it is all metal and also better weather sealed, what is your view?
Found it. So basically because of the cost and hard drive space, not the Performance? I shoot w/ two R5's and was interested in your take of things. Thanks.
I was considering getting the R6 but ended up with the EOS R5 but honestly they are both amazing cameras. I was worried I wouldn’t like them but no, I love them.
Real good video, Katelyn! There is one good reason that no one has mentioned about using the rear screen to compose that is a negative. If the photographer wears glasses for close up viewing, they'd have to stop and put on their glasses to see the screen...whereas... by looking through the camera eyepiece they would see a sharp image because the diopter would be adjusted for the photographers eyes.
WOW..!! My sentiments exactly and why I have not purchased the R5.. Being a single card camera, when the card in full, do you do an immediate backup onto a portable hard drive..?? Do you have any special in-the-field workflow manipulation because of the single card limitation.?? 'Congratulations on the new addition' ...!! Ten fingers, ten toes, God willing..
Great and insightful video! I've been hearing a lot of people compare the r6 to the Sony7iii. Would you consider a video explaining why you chose the Canon r6 if you need an adapter regardless? Mainly battery life
Hi Katelyn. I want order r6 to take for daughter senior photos. Can i ask do i need any lens or adopter? Or can use camera as is ? Take portrait. Thank you so much on your other videos. 🙏🥰🍾 congrats on your new addition 👶
@@KatelynJames Thank you!!!! I ordered the body only ( camera ) and the starter rf 50mm 1.8 . Lens. It's my first time owning pro camera. Need watch videos more info how use it . Like you ask " what you need not what you want ". I appreciate it. BIG THANKS 😊!!!!!
VIDEO QUESTION: First, thank you so very much for the update!! Tyler if it's not too much trouble can you please post a quick video about setting up the R6 to take video? I'm a professional photographer, not a professional videographer but I would love to know any tips you have for settings so that I can use the video feature. I am obsessed with not having to manually focus like I had to do on my Mark III and I know I will use video more if I can even get started with it. I don't need 4K, just basic recommend settings. THANK SO MUCH!!
Hi there! So I don't have a specific video about the R6 but I do have this video about the EOS R which will be similar in a lot of ways. I'm definitely open to making a video specific video about the R6! Do you have any video specific questions you'd like to see answered?
This is good info in your video. I have the R5 because I shoot birds mostly and I have plenty of storage, but I think I might add an R6 for family and more casual shooting. I do find that the focusing accuracy of the R5 beats my 1DX mk II handily (and I'm assuming the R6 is the same). I feel like mirrorless is going to be a game changer for the industry; looking forward to seeing a pro level body that uses that quad pixel autofocus that Canon has a patent on. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I love your wisdow and practicality. (my opinion is, grab the camera to use the rear screen is fool, brands everytime get better EVF and people use their cameras like a cellphone and more and more depends on tech and not in skills... I don't understand you people!) BTW, a lot of people was asking for a mirrorless version of the 1DXmklll and now you have it!, R6 is like a 1DXlll and all are dreaming with so much mpx without knowing the computer issues you will have with those specs... I still don't understand people.
If you're using Lightroom, choose "Embedded & SIdecar" in Build Previews during import. Then Lightroom will just use the embedded jpeg in the RAW file like what Photo Mechanic does.
Great video! I am using my new R6 for the first time this weekend. I was looking forward to using eye autofocus for the ceremony but your experience has me spooked. I like to be in controls as well. When using eye AF + touch focus couldn’t you tell the AF to lock on a Face and if it wanders off you are ready with your finger to put focus back on the face where you want it?
Hey Katelyn, I had the same problems with a slow shutter speed at a portrait shoot last week. I changed my Shutter mode from „Elec. 1st-curtain“ to full „Mechanical“. Now I can hear the shutter better. Maybe this can help you as well. BTW: I love your style from teaching to your images. Thank you for these great videos.
Great video! Hope one day I can get myself an R6. I don’t think I can ever stop using the viewfinder. I love using it. Sadly I feel like it’s what sets me apart from someone just taking pictures with their phones.
Thanks for the R6 videos there are not enough real world experience videos on it since the R5 seems to get the attention of most. I see the 28-70mm f/2 being a perfect fit for you since a review that I read described it as a bag full of primes. So given your affinity for primes it seems like good choice for entering the RF lineup.
Thank you for reaffirming a lot of the reasons I have been leaning towards picking up an R6 instead of the R5. I am not really a video shooter, so the R6 already has more than enough video capability for anything I would be doing. I can see the occasional situation where I would love to have those 45mp when shooting stills, but 99% of the time 20mp is going to be more than enough. Also, there definitely is something special about the RF lenses. Adapted lenses work really well on canon R cameras, but the RF glass just seems to communicate telepathically, and the sharpness and clarity is just unlike anything else out there.
That’s unfortunate you’ve had a subpar experience with EyeAF. It has been nothing short of a godsend for both my wedding and pro sports photography. I respect your position when it comes to feeling comfortable and confident with your tools.
I'm considering getting the R6, but I already own the R. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about that. It seems the R6 has solved some of the things that bugged me about the R, but it's also 2/3rds the resolution and I do worry a little about that. The longest lens I have is 200mm and there are some events where that's not long enough and I need to crop. I worry about cropping too much into a 20MP photo.
Are you able to move closer? If so this reduces the need for cropping. If not, try an extender, but fitting and removing it brings its own problems. Cropping 20MP to the equivalent of an APS-C gives 7.7MP, enough for an A4 print or social media and of course you don't have to crop that deep.
@@davidlee7094 For the events I'm talking about, moving closer is not really an option. An extender is definitely an option, though. And thankfully those events are rare these days. But even still, I do love the insane sharpness I get with the R. I wish I could try out an R6 so I could compare real-world shots of my own.
Same with me. I've been considering the Mark iv (upgrading from an 80D). I wasn't sure about the R6, until now. You've convinced me. I'll be picking up the R6. Hopefully soon...
I am shooting the same as you with my R. I’m not keen on the eye tracking and right now I prefer the eye piece. The only thing I don’t like about my R is the tracking took a bit to get use to. I went from a 5d mark iii so it was quite the learning curve. I am hoping I can get the R6 this summer.
Hi, I love your video's, I just sold my canon 5dmiv for the eos r6. I hope i dont regret it. I came from the 5d classic, mark ii , mark iii and mark iv. The 5d family is like my best friend hahaha camera's that i can trust and build like a steel hammer. But now time is changing. I hope canon did his homework good while making mirorless camera's. Keep doing you thing 🍀👍
In this video I was interested to hear your comment that you received feedback that shooting with the camera to your eye is passe and that one should use the LCD screen. I will admit now that I AM old school. I've been shooting for almost 40 years when the viewfinder was all you had and there was no IS. I think this school of thought has developed from a generation of cell phone users and for videographers who have got used to that method. However, I am going to note a point of physics. It requires three points of support to hold something steady (that's why tripods are tripods after all). Holding a camera with two points of support, and those cantilevered from your body is both inherently more unstable and fatiguing, especially if one is using heavy lenses. It may be less of an issue for those shooting with small focal length lenses, but for anything telephoto I would always shoot with the camera to my eye to get that third level of support. In my classes I get students to take a broom by the bristle end and, using the two hand extended technique, try to hold the top of the handle steady - they find it extremely hard and tiring. That simple model equates to the light path of a camera with a tele lens, held two-handed. So I ask them to do what they need to do to get the handle steady and to reduce their fatigue. They hold the camera like a rifle: that is to say one hand on the pole and the bristle to their shoulder - that is the same principle as shooting with the lens to one's eye. So, in conclusion, I think that there is a place for both methods. For shallow FL and video then the two-handed method may be OK, but for tele work I think the physics and fatigue arguments hold true to support shooting from the (E)VF
@@KatelynJames what I mean is that you said at the time of the review that you wouldn't use the eye track. What about now? Have you tried? Master it? etc
Are you still using the 170 MB speed SD cards instead of the 300MB cards? What GB size cards do you use for weddings and how many? Also, for weddings, how many batteries do you end up using?
HI Katelyn, Just bought R6..Excited!! But stuck on which sd card should i get? For sure not going to buy the expensive ones. Looking at UHS I cards 64 t0 128 GB but which brand is good ... Scan Disk, Lexar....so on. I am more on photo shooting . any brand that you can recommend ? Thanks
@@KatelynJames yes.. from the point that i lost my 5dmark iii and the fact that my wife is pregnant now i have to decided in what im going to invest ..after tons of videos unboxins, people ractions, cons and pros about R,r6 and r5 your video and the natural way to explain was the real answer
I have been slowly switching over to the newer SD cards, not out of buffering concerns, but with a new card reader how much faster the raw files can be imported into Lightroom. I use to start the import and leave.
Hello Katelyn, You said in the video you set the custom ring to colour temperature. I am still struggling to understand what setting explicit colour temperature is good for for stills (video is a completely different story). I have had my Canon cameras always on AWBW and in at least 95% of cases it gives me what I want and in the rare case I don't like the white balance I can change it in a few seconds in Lightroom. It would make a difference for non-raw image formats where the white balance is baked into the image but I always shoot raw and I assume you do as well. Maybe I miss something.
Love your videos! I'm a Nikon Shooter owning a Z6 and a Z7 and I've shied away from Weddings but have now started down that path and these cameras really let me down in low light with autofocusing performance. I'm seriously considering moving over to the canon system for it's speed and consistency when shooting weddings or events. Problem is I have been a Nikon shooter for over a decade and I have a lot of glass for this platform. So when I saw the 28 to 70 f2 I was like hmmm. That might work to start out with. Or maybe an R5 and an R6. One with the 28-70 and the other with the 70-200 rf. So I'm not sure if you read your comments but I was curious to know your thoughts on shooting a whole wedding no wider than 28mm? Thanks you, I'm thinking about checking out your course.
Check out all our videos about the R6 here: th-cam.com/play/PLEGNJ7k6eTHSzIxWuiLxQ6yzmqUSsvqR1.html
Q. What focus settings should I use to take group photos?
I have listened to a lot of photographers on youtube. I have to say you are amongst the very best. Lots of plain talking, not getting too complicated, or technical. Excellent!!
Wow, thank you!
Even though I can nerd out with the best of them, I love your simple, straightforward approach to something that could have gotten nerdy very quickly. I feel like I’ve gotten a great education on the R6 and RF lenses through your videos. Thanks KJ!
Awesome, thank you!
Great Idea! Thanks for the Tip Jeff!!
For those that say that using the viewfinder is "a thing of the past", it just gives you mor stability, I love using EVFs.
Thanks for watching!!
@@KatelynJames it was a great video! thanks!
I use the viewfinder and flip screen interchangeably. To be honest it's just a hell of a lot more comfortable using the viewfinder. Like Katelyn said… Holding the camera out is a pain on the arms.
@@longliveclassicmusic Agree on 100%, that's why using the EVF is what works for me, except for video.
Thanks!!
Thanks so much!!
Thanks for watching!!
We love it! There is a learning curve! But we couldn't live without it now!
Oh wow! As for learning curve, is it the mechanics of the R6?
100% why I went with the R6 and not the R5. R5 is better for video, but R6 is better in low light. Great video and real world experience.
Totally agree!
Interesting why is the R6 better in low light?
The higher the MPs the more challenging the low light performance
I got the R6 after extensive research (I have the Canon M50 and the Canon Rebel T6i) and am thrilled with how sharp it is even with the kit lens! I got some other lenses but haven’t even tried them yet because I’m so pleased with the kit lens.
Good to hear!! Glad you like it!
I just got my R6 today and I immediately noticed the difference. I traded my 5DS to R6, bit of a stretch budget wise but I don’t regret getting it at all. I watched your videos before purchasing my R6 and I am now excited to do my next wedding gig. Thank you so much 😊
Great to hear! So excited for you!!
The eye tracking tripped us up too! For weddings we use the face tracking and reserve the eye tracking for seniors and kids in the studio!
Great idea!!
Im a wedding videographer in panama city beach florida and use the R6. I love it!! I also use it for photo shoots on the side!
Thanks for watching!
I usually get bored with TH-cam videos but have to say yours was really cool and informative. TY
Thanks for watching!
In Roberto Valenzuela's video at 9:22, it shows the irritating white box with arrows:th-cam.com/video/UwMM4F3jzNY/w-d-xo.html
Settings involved for my favorite method: AF Operation> SERVO AF, and AF Method>Face+box, then be sure eye detection is enabled.
Thanks for watching and for sharing!
We love the 28-70!! Thanks for watching!
So awesome!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video.
Which do prefer Light Room or Photo Shop, and why?
I’m currently looking into the R6 in place of my Mark IV’s. Your videos make me very excited for this! Even the look of your videos with the R6 is crazy good. Thank you for sharing!
You will love it!
Thank you for this update! I am with you on not doing the zombie hold with the camera out at arms lenght. I have a lot more stability as well the point you made about being able to see better in bright situations.
Exactly!
Thank you so much for all of the R6 videos! I agree 100% with using touch and drag vs. eye tracking! And I loved your reasoning for still using the viewfinder. So helpful to hear someone articulate that!
Glad it was helpful!
I really love your channel!
I have the r5 on the way with the 28-70 f2 so you have me super excited! I’m going from a 6D mii so I may pass out the first time I use it!
hahaha. it is going to be a game changer!!
I've got to say I love when Tyler drops in hahaha 😂 great content as always guys!!
Just bought a new R6, 500 € off (canon cashback) ! And a battery grip for free ! I need to learn how to use it but the menu is pretty similar to my 5DIII's. Stabilisation, focus, dynamic range, noise at high iso etc are a big improvement !
Thanks for watching!
and not to mention 12 or 20 pics a second !
only drawback is the fact the batteries run out rather fast but I can still use the batteries of my 5DIII's in the R6 !
I’m just loving my R6 right now. Can’t wait to shoot my first wedding with. Congrats on the pregnancy!
Spoiler alert! 😂
They are amazing cameras!! Thanks for watching!!
Hey ! How do you enable live view on screen for picture and video. Can you focus and click a pic without tracking mode being activated? Need a favor !
All valid points. Practically, this review makes perfect sense. From the beginning, I never believed I could reliably use eye tracking on a wedding day. This just confirmed so many things.
Yea! I may learn to like it, but I am too much of a control freak on wedding days haha!
Thank you for this. I was wondering about getting another body. Debate the R5 but I’ll just have two R6. You answered my questions.
Thanks for watching
Great to see a video review of the R6 for stills shooters and isnt hung up on the video functions. I think you’re touch & drag focus method is the right approach to shooting weddings because The eye tracking proponents never explain how you’re supposed to work that situation quickly when there’s a field of people moving around in front of you
Glad you liked it!!
that over heating is UHS; CF express difference; serial vs parallel communications. possibly?
Possibly.
Another thing to consider of R5 vs R6 is the R5 shutter is rated for 500,000 photos (same as 1DX iii) , vs 300,000 on the R6
Thanks for sharing!!
Best ...Ed
Thanks for the tip Ed!! We will try this out!!
I have not had that issue since then. I don't think I changed any settings!
I use the viewfinder as well. Holding the camera out to use the LCD screen with a heavy lens doesn’t work for me, my hands shake too much so whatever focus point I choose ends up getting shifted cause I can’t hold the camera steady when it’s extended like that.
Glad I am not alone!!
Jared Polin has lots of videos showcasing the dual pixel auto focus tracking, and in his user guide for the EOS R6 he might talk about how to set the start point for the eye and face tracking.
Hi Katelyn, are you going to look at the R6 v2?
I will look at it, but not sure if we will upgrade
Exactly the type of review I was looking for. Great job Kate.
Nice vid! I just got my RF 28-70 f2 last week 😍🥰
I am jelly. 😘
Nice!! It really is amazing!!
One of the best videos I found about R6. Thanks for making this. Though I have a quick question, have you used Sigma 18-35mm f1.8mm lens? If yes then please answer...The 28-70mm f2 RF lens is significantly sharper than Sigma 18-35mm f1.8?
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate that for working professionals, this is a huge boon. For some hobbyists, the process is often as important as the result. I shoot with a 5D classic because I enjoy it and I find it challenges me and forces me to find solutions. I also fine the output to be more "filmic" than modern cameras.
Thanks for watching!
(see below for EDF in AI Servo)
Eye tracking works in one shot (auto detect and track) and ai servo (press focus button to detect and track) by selecting "tracking" auto focus method and enabling "eye detection".
Sound confusing...it's not :)
A third focus point option is to set an area of your screen up (top right) to respond to your thumb movement (see in menus).
@@nismo09nz Thank you Lloyd! This is so helpful....I'm going to try to figure this out...
Thanks for watching!
I've noticed with my R6 that my images straight out of camera were almost dull and had a gray tone to them. I changed my camera mode from standard to portrait mode I was curious to what shooting mode you had your camera set to under the menu options
I will have to check.
Wondering the same thing.
As a father of three with the fourth one coming and as a wedding photographer I recently "down" graded from 1DX2 to R5. And I got to say I agree with everything you say in your video. Appart from the fact that I do need billboard size photo's so I took the R5 instead.
Thanks for watching!!
True! Thanks for watching!
Hey Katelyn you mentioned a lot of small extra points I didn't expect would be a problem. Thanks for your insight! I would be curious if you could make a video showing the print sizes you do with the R6.
I'll add it to the list!
I don’t use the eye tracking all the time. But what I did is put that function as a custom button on and off when it’s a single person instead of a group
Great idea!!
Yes. I just discovered you could do this and might try it. I'm actually comfortable using eye-tracking, but having it as a custom button might be nice, too.
I currently shoot on a 5D iV and I am so tempted to switch :)
I think it is worth it if you have the budget to!
Have you printed out bridal portraits and the pixels been okay? What's the largest size you've printed? This is my only fear with the R6 vs the R5.
We have not had any issues!
This was an enlightening presentation. A welcome break from all the "pixel peeping" stuff. Just the, "yeah I was wondering about that" real information. Good luck with the new baby on the way, and stay safe.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed this! Sharing your experience with the camera is so much better than the other videos I've watched. After watching this, I feel like picking an R6 as a backup camera. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great Video Katelyn! Really happy to have found your channel.
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for watching!
im really glad i came across this video! im currently looking to upgrade from a 5d (classic) and a c100 mkii. and i have been debating between the R5 and R6. and very hesitant on the r5 due to the CF express card and having to work around the new codec. i hesitate on the r6 because of the megapixels. ill definitely be getting the R6 thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I bought the Mark 4 used it for 3 days. Exchanged it for the r6 ! Game changer!!!!
I think you made the right choice!
I read and heard some had broken hot shoes , have you heard about this. Another, some say they wish they had the R5 because
it can take more hard wear because it is all metal and also better weather sealed, what is your view?
I haven’t heard about broken hot shoes and we have loved the R6
Very nice and neat review. R6 has fantastic advantages in many ways. I'm considering choosing between R5 and R6. It's difficult to decide.
Glad I could help We love the R6!
Found it. So basically because of the cost and hard drive space, not the Performance? I shoot w/ two R5's and was interested in your take of things. Thanks.
Correct! I didn't want to have to buy a new cards and we have loved the R6!
I was considering getting the R6 but ended up with the EOS R5 but honestly they are both amazing cameras. I was worried I wouldn’t like them but no, I love them.
Awesome!! You should do a video about the R5!!
Your opinion counts. Very informative video. And I adore listen your voice.
Thanks so much!!
Great point! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! The R6 has 2 SD card slots. I write RAW to one and large JPGs to the other!
Great and insightful video! I've been hearing a lot of people compare the r6 to the Sony7iii. Would you consider a video explaining why you chose the Canon r6 if you need an adapter regardless? Mainly battery life
Great idea!
Hi Katelyn. I want order r6 to take for daughter senior photos. Can i ask do i need any lens or adopter? Or can use camera as is ? Take portrait. Thank you so much on your other videos. 🙏🥰🍾 congrats on your new addition 👶
It requires RF lenses, so if you have EF lenses like for the Mark IV you will need an adapter.
@@KatelynJames Thank you!!!! I ordered the body only ( camera ) and the starter rf 50mm 1.8 . Lens. It's my first time owning pro camera. Need watch videos more info how use it . I would love to know the Lens you use on your trips that you mentioned (you all use ) with kids moving fast Prefer prime or zoom lens ? Because this is all new to me . I want invest my next Lens.
I'll make sure Ty sees this!!
Thanks for watching Patrick!! And yes! Mirrorless is a total game changer!
Thank you Katelyn!! I just got mine and your information truly helped.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for your amazing video tips. Very helpful! What is difference between the Adaptor control ring and standard?
It is more expensive, but has added functionality.
Thanks for your video... I’m considering switching to Canon and this certainly helps me
Glad it was helpful!
I love your wisdow and practicality.
(my opinion is, grab the camera to use the rear screen is fool, brands everytime get better EVF and people use their cameras like a cellphone and more and more depends on tech and not in skills... I don't understand you people!)
BTW, a lot of people was asking for a mirrorless version of the 1DXmklll and now you have it!, R6 is like a 1DXlll and all are dreaming with so much mpx without knowing the computer issues you will have with those specs... I still don't understand people.
Thanks for watching!
If you're using Lightroom, choose "Embedded & SIdecar" in Build Previews during import. Then Lightroom will just use the embedded jpeg in the RAW file like what Photo Mechanic does.
Thanks for the tip!
That is true!
Yes! Someone else recommended this too!! Thanks!
Great video! Hope one day I can get myself an R6. I don’t think I can ever stop using the viewfinder. I love using it.
Sadly I feel like it’s what sets me apart from someone just taking pictures with their phones.
You and me both!
Thanks for watching!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
That’s unfortunate you’ve had a subpar experience with EyeAF. It has been nothing short of a godsend for both my wedding and pro sports photography. I respect your position when it comes to feeling comfortable and confident with your tools.
Thanks for watching!
Tyler would be better to make a suggestion there!! We love the R6!!
@@KatelynJames I've been watching all your R6 videos and you really have me about to buy one! Thanks for the great content!
Thank you for this!!! But now I’m torn! I was going to get a canon mark 5d iv had my mind set now I’m unsure!
I would look at the R6!!
There is a learning curve for sure!!
Thanks for watching you are gonna love the r6
And what is your Impression so far?
I’m OBSESSED with this camera! All my L lenses are so sharp now - vs the 5d mark iii/IV that were always having to be calibrated! 🥰
So sharp!!! Mine too!!
This video was just what I needed. Thank you so much, your content is fantastic! : )
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this awesome review. Have you ever had focusing issues with the R6 in low light?
I have not!
@@KatelynJames Awesome. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!!
Katelyn, have you got news on the eye tracking?
Not sure what your question is? I still prefer the touch and drag focusing.
@@KatelynJames what I mean is that you said at the time of the review that you wouldn't use the eye track. What about now? Have you tried? Master it? etc
Are you still using the 170 MB speed SD cards instead of the 300MB cards? What GB size cards do you use for weddings and how many? Also, for weddings, how many batteries do you end up using?
still using 170 mb.. we use 64 gb use 3-6 of them... 2-3 batteries per day... normally only 2 batteries
You have IBIS so you get at least 5 stops leeway vs. old SLR without IBIS
Thanks for watching!
Is the 28-70 f2 enough to replace the primes???? Give us rewiev please??Thx in advance
Oh I think I will always be a prime shooter. Michael loves the 28-70 and it has replaced his 24-70, but I still shoot with all my favorite lenses.
Thanks
these are what we use! amzn.to/39LEV6y
this video confirm what i need to buy
thanks for be at youtube

Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Katelyn! are you guys going to replace your Mark IVs for good with the r6 or keep them for backup? Love your videos so much, thank you!
I have my Mark IV as a back up on wedding days.
Your tutorials are real world experience thanks and congratulations from Down Under.
Glad you like them!
I have been slowly switching over to the newer SD cards, not out of buffering concerns, but with a new card reader how much faster the raw files can be imported into Lightroom. I use to start the import and leave.
Great point!
Hi Katelyn, is EOS R still good beginner camera ?
Thanks for watching! I think no wider than 28 is fine! We just got the 28-70 and love it!!
@@KatelynJames Thank you for taking the time!
What is portrait and standard settings
I shoot on standard I can't really tell a big difference between the two!
Hi. You can go into your menu and set a MINIMUM shutter speed so you never shoot below 125 etc. :)
Thanks!
