Man i just got my iphone 11 pro and after watching your ipad videos i vowed to only use my iphone 11 for recording, editing and uploading! It's so convenient and less time consuming! This video deff helped me out on what i want for a mic! it's crazy how i dont have to record on my camera, pull out the SD card ...pull up final cut ...etc everyday now. I can just do everything right on my phone!

I love the MV88. I bought an extension lightning cable for it so that I can place it anywhere and use the phone as an interface, and I've used it for all kinds of things, including recording live opera performances, and if you put it there same spot as you would put proper studio microphones or a mobile recording device, it sounds as good or better than any option under at least 300$, and that's before you include cables and audio interface, etc.
By the way, the capsule is the exact same as on the MV88+. Mary Spender also made a video called: 'tiny microphone versus studio", where they record all the singing and band instruments with the MV88+, and the result was as you might guess, easily good enough for an end product.

Hi! I'm recording myself singing opera tomorrow (with live piano accompaniment) and am wondering which settings u used in the app to get the best results and if u have any other tips for recording opera, in terms of mic placement and anything else. Thank u in advance!

    • @Herfinnur
      @Herfinnur ปีที่แล้ว

@@CarinaCovers96 cool, break a leg! I've only had a few performances since the pandemic screwed everything up, so I don't remenber precisely, and U can't check because I'm not even sure where my mv88 is right now. but I think it's this : format WAV, quality 48Khz 24bit, compression off(it sucks), limiter on (I think), 120 degree, and the flat preset. The 'music' preset seems to be geared towards stadium concerts . The level I adjust based on the loudness of the room and the mic placement, and the mic placement is usually less than ideal, when it's with an audience, but the closer it is to the floor or a seat, the more I point the mid capsule upwards. Just do your best to point the mid capsule center stage. If you have the time and energy, try stuff out
      Edit:
One more thing: lower the bass a bit in the equalizer.
No that I've reread your comment, it sounds like you're specifically doing it to record yourself? In that case, maybe place it on something like a microphone stand or a sheet music stand at least two meters away from you, but ideally farther away than that. The farther it is from the floor, the less risk of rumble noises

Thank you for making this video. I just watched a few photographers criticize the audio on the iPhone 11 Pro and saying they don't want to put a big mic rig on it, and I put in the comments, "Dude, just get this!" The MV88 has been around since the 5 or 5S but it was too power hungry. I heard the 8 Plus could take the battery consumption a lot better, so I imagine that the 11 and 11 Pro is a much better match for this mic.
As for the 88+, most of that cost is for the mic, but the rest is for the Manfrotto tripod and other accessories. Great if you don't have all that already (or want to be able to use this mic for Android phones), but not really worth it if you just want the mic.

  • @scottisitt

The RAW mid/side polar pattern is unprocessed sound. You can't just play that back without editing it in post. You need to download drivers to decode the signal (like from Voxengo) and then use an audio editor (like Audacity) to create the polar pattern you want.* That's the novelty of RAW mid/side: you can decide what polar pattern you want AFTER filming.
If you try to play back a video recorded in RAW mid/side without sound editing, your device will interpret the mid mic as the left channel and the figure 8 (bi-directional) mic as the right channel.
    * Not sure if there are drivers or an editor for iOS...

Hey Henny. Have you had any issues with the Lightning Port. I use a Lav mic with my 8Plus buy the port is acting sketchy. I would recommend using a splitter. To keep from plugging and unplugging from the port and so you can charge when the battery is low and still record. It's easier to replace the cable than the port. I prefer to use a GoPro and am working on video about good budget friendly solutions for begginers for the audio quality. Love the channel. Thanks for sharing. 🐼👍🏽✌️🧟‍♂️

I second this! Had it for about a year and I love how you can customize it and it just works!

And great point about airplane mode. I’ve definitely had feedback before. Slight inconvenience but necessary.

Hi! I was wondering if this mic is good to reduce background noise.

Thanks for your review! I was reading reviews for the Shure MV88 on Amazon and they mention that it has no separate power source and it really drains the iPhone battery. Does it drain your iPhone 11 Pro battery quickly? I want to get this mic for my husband to record his banjo and guitar.

Will it work with a thin case

Does your MV88 have to be angled in order for it to work? I just got mine but it doesn’t work when it’s fully folded at 90 deg angle. Please advise.

And what phone case are you using that it works with the mic? I have to take my case off. 😓

Thanks Hanny for these amazing content!I have a question for you: I often record some songs with just voice and guitar on my iPhone 11 Pro (posting on sicoal, nothing too professional), would you recommend this mic to improve the recording in this situation?

Yes! This mic sounds great with acoustic guitar and vocals. You’ll definitely be able to hear a difference 👍🏼

I was bummed that I can’t use the mic on my iPad Pro now because of USB-C. Still, I have my iPhone 11 so I may end up keeping the phone for awhile just because of that. Question: I have not tried this yet, but there was a TH-camr claiming that his MV88 overheated while filming in 4K. Has that happened to you? Thanks!
