Thank you for clarifying the iPad Pro/USB-C issue! I just last night read their annotation and was about to comment here. In a nutshell this means it basically works with the iPad Pro.
@@ThomasGeist I'm wondering if they've by now fixed the issue so you can adjust the mic via the software on iPad? And if not, is it as simple as plugging it into iPhone, making adjustments, then unplugging and plugging straight into iPad and the mic will just remember its last settings?

Your first video, you say? Then I have some good news. I’ve been considering this or similar mics, watched a bunch of reviews of this and similar mics, went and pestered the sound guy at my local superstore (the incomparable Yodabashi Camera in Tokyo) and your review helped me make up my mind. It was the demonstration of the stereo guitar recording that sealed the deal; I’m also a guitarist, thank you very much! Nice playing too, by the way!

Don't know if you will see this comment or not, but to my knowledge Manfrotto is kinda like the Shure of tripods, really good quality. Thanks for the video!
A quick Hello from FRANCE, in my hometown of Strasbourg. This is your first video??? wow!! I can't imagine you haven't some strong experience in video editing, ... built up over years of practice. This is a great video. It is covering more, on this mic, than what I found so far in all other videos talking about it. I own this mic as well and have been using it in a variety of situations. Especially the mid side configuration when I record acoustic guitar. It is much less complicated and less expensive than using the 2 usual mics (bidirectional and directional). So even if you loose in workflow because you can't use a long cable directly into your daw, I found it is still a winner as it is so easy to just turn on your mic, put it on chair on its tripod, right in front of you, play the guitar and record on your phone. Then just send the file directly to your Dropbox and into your daw. You save time upfront, at the right moment, when you are inspired and want to play and record on the go, wherever you are as long as you have the mic and the guitar with you. Anyway, the quality of the stereo rendering is awesome, and you made the demonstration that this little mic can do it. I wished I had known this mic before I thought I needed to buy my 2 other mics-and-stands-and-xlr-cables in order to do decent stereo recording of my guitar. In the end, and because of the versatility of this microphone, I found that the Shure MV88+ is one of the best solution for the buck, and for whoever needs to limit his budget to only one mic, this one is the way to go in my opinion. btw, I love when you raise your local flag... not everyone knows it is Chicago's. I use to live there and I miss the Windy City. Thumbs up and a good luck to you and your channel.
Merci bien, monsieur!! This was indeed my first ever video project, after learning as much as I could online first. Mais je suis aussi musicien, so many of the concepts were familiar, and it was more of a translation question ;) Totally agree that this makes a fantastic first mic, especially if you’re doing everything on mobile devices. And yes, I do love Chicago! I used to live in Europe... Salut!

I believe the incompatibility issue with a USB-C connector has been fixed. The MV88 + works great with my iPhone 15 Pro which uses a USB-C I/O port. 👍🏻 So far, I really like this mic. It opens up a lot of options that weren’t available using the onboard mic and recording app.
@@riverrage yeah, I've been using it with the 15 Pro Max with no issues, just yesterday to record some sound effects for something I'm working on. Thanks for watching!
Hi Sam, Nice job! Very in-depth. I used mid-side all the time recording guitar (and other things). Nice to see that as an option. Did you find a solution for the short cable? That caught my eye right away.

Thanks for that review. I’m looking at this for our cigar review channel, we’re often out and haven’t brought our gear. This sounds like a great option. Looking forward to more reviews.
Thanks for watching! Just smoked my third cigar ever last night 🤣 Yeah, this is a great solution for lightweight, on-the-go production. Have used it several times for acoustic guitar recording and been really happy with the results. Cheers!
Just an fyi for acoustic guitars. Never mic the sound hole. The mic should pointing at the 12th fret, back about 12 inches. This will make a massive difference.

This was really great i just got the MV88 microphone used an adapter plugged it into my iPad Pro did not work. Just about to spend more and get the Kit thinking it would work. good job I watched this. I hope they do an update for iPad Pro
Thanks for watching! Yeah this is not good. I just had to upgrade to the new iPad Air, which has a USB-C connector, and the MV88+ does work, but the only thing you can adjust in the app is the gain and the sample rate. You cannot adjust EQ, compressor, limiter, or the polar patterns. You may be able to use it with a USB-C hub (which I’ll be testing next week), but if the iPhone goes USB-C next year this product will be dead to me. Which I’m not very happy about. I also learned on Twitter that the new MV7 USB mic doesn’t work at all with the iPad Pro. This has the potential to be a big headache for Shure...
Excellent job! YOu are going places with this channel if you keep your content at this level of quality, and by content I do not mean video/audio, as important as they are - the substantive content. Cheers!
Thanks so much! I definitely intend to keep things at this level, although I plan on going in a more guitar oriented direction… Appreciate the support!
@@samvarma Just purchased the MV88+ Video Kit after trying out the software (both audio and video) on my iPhone 11 with - a non Shure mic! Yup, a Deity D3 Pro. I would say it is very smart of Shure to make its software available to all even if they do not use a Shure mic. Of course, the functionality is limited, but still better than most apps out there. Thanks for the video again Sam! Cheers.
I RARELY comment on a video (like a few a year, maybe) but wanted to say "well done". I was looking at another approach (Tascam field recorder or similar) and the convenience and decent quality of this unit and its apps, has me thinking differently now. Thanks for such a good review!
Hey, thank you so much. Huge compliment-I’m the same way. Really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching! And don’t forget the Deep Dive video I did about the app, if you haven’t already ;)
@@mablungone2059 Nice! Maybe post Rona ;). I did it with my iPhone and iPad. Filmic Pro to shoot and LumaFusion to edit. Helps that I’m a musician-principles are very similar to recording audio. Lots of TH-cam how-to videos, and an idea of how I wanted it to look. Basically I just did what I could with the gear I had! Started with “how to get cinematic video with an iPhone” and “10 mistakes new TH-cam’s make” videos, and tried to answer every question I had before setting off. Don’t know if that helps 🤷🏻♂️
Great video Sam! If you were to record an "in the room" guitar amp / cab with this, how would you go about it, and what settings would you use in the app?
Thanks for watching! This is actually something I’m looking forward to trying. I have a mesa 2X 12 Road king cab that has two different speakers in it. I would want to try using the MV88 like a normal mic but with the mid/side turned on to pick up some of the other speaker and the room. I would also like to try putting the mic exactly in between the two different speakers and seeing how that works panned hard left and right in the recording. In theory, it’s not a mystery - it’s a microphone, so you can use it just like you would any other microphone. Really the only question is does it sound good 😜 As for how to set the amp, Man, all of TH-cam is dedicated to questions like that. If it’s a tube amp, I would say crank up the power section to 3/4 full blast, and then play with the preamp gain and EQ to suit your taste. Again, if it sounds good it is good!
@@samvarma I would love to see you cover this in a video! Sorry, my question was what settings you'd use in the APP, not amp. Anyway, I think this would be really interesting experiment.
Hahaha did I just misread that?? APP settings. Ok, so I’d probably use the mid/side method, recording directly into Cubasis. So set the mic to the polar pattern all the way to the right (cardioid + x/y), set the gain appropriately, probably go limiter ON, compressor and high pass filter both OFF. The compressor will raise the volume of the room relative to the volume of the amp, so I would probably leave that off initially at least. The highpass filter I would want to bypass completely, because most likely I would be fine-tuning that during my mixing process. And then frankly, I would just see what happens! I’m guessing that there would be a fair amount of trial and error to get good results but I have no doubt that it can be done. As for doing that in another video… That’s virtually guaranteed. Just not sure when. I’m focused on an iPad Air 4 video right now-just picked one up since my old iPad is no longer enough to work on this channel ;)
@@samvarma Thanks! Totally agree that the polar pattern could be really cool to pick up other speakers and some room ambience. Looking forward to that vid!
Hi Sam! Loved your video! I can't believe it was your first one. I hope you keep it up! I am just setting up a cooking channel and it is always encouraging to see how new channels can bring value to everyone! I am using this mic for the voiceovers in my videos and have done a few tests. Did you end up preferring stereo or mono cardioid for voiceovers? Cheers!
Hi Patricio!! Thanks so much for checking it out. I think I prefer the stereo just because it feels a little more natural to listen to, especially in headphones. But I think that’s a taste question, and I may mix it up depending on what feels right in different situations. All the best!
Bro, this was an awesome video!! I've just sat and watched 5 reviews about the MV88+ and this was by far the most in depth... The one thing nobody has mentioned though is "vertical video" - it seems that the setup is not compatible for vertical video content - For filming shorts etc.
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah not sure if the Shure apps do vert video, but I think any camera app that does audio should see the mic when it’s connected?
Thanks so much for this excellent video. I was about to purchase a Shure SV7 for my daily show - but now I'm not so sure (Shure)! On faith I've subscribed to your channel. Now let's see what else you have for me... Cheers from North of Cochrane, Ontario, Canada.... almost to Moose Factory, Ontario, Canada.
Hey! Thanks for watching! I would definitely leave the limiter on, and compression always helps. The best advice I can give is to run a test with different settings, and see which one you like the best. Remember that it is a stereo mic, so I would play with stereo and mono and see which one you like best. That being said, I would probably go with stereo. I would also play with the placement of the mic between your mouth and the guitar, so you can get the right balance of your voice versus the guitar. The closer the microphone is to the sound source the more bass it will pick up, but compression will also add more low frequencies. If you want to get crazy you could always turn the microphone on its side so that one side of the stereo mic is facing the voice and the other side the guitar… At the end of the day just play around with it a little and see what you like! The only other thing I would add is that it is a condenser mic, so it will pick up absolutely everything… Including cars passing outside your window, the AC unit, the TV in the other room etc. etc. something to be aware of!

Great for a 1st video.. Would suggest you to back light ur studio.. Maybe add a few colour led tubes.. Will give ur video a great look.. Cheers and all the best 😊
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, definitely room to grow in that regard ;) Was trying to get the basics down, but upgrades needed!
Great insights... even 2 years later. Thinking of using this MV88+ vk on my iPhone 14 pro max.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, still an extremely useful bit of kit ;)
@@samvarma do you still use this MV88+ today?
Thanks for the excellent review. You did a great job, and should def keep doing these!
Love it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to drop me a line. I plan to continue 😎
Sold! Buying the kit because of you gatinho.
Sergio Pires psss psss psss I am so excited!! Good to hear from you 🔥🍩
Excellent review. Super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Good review. I appreciated so much how you played Extreme's "Hole hearted" too!
YEAH!! That was a little Easter egg, and I think only one other person picked up on it ;) Thanks for watching!
@@samvarma Dude - if you are in Cali, I'd buy you some coffees to train me up on video-making :)
Great first video!
Cool video!
Ivan Zervigon gracias coño!
Great review and video production!
Thank you!
Well done and helpful review - thanks!
Thank you!
Wow what a fantastic video. Thanks man!
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video! The sound is incredible!
Thank you! And thanks for taking the time to watch. All the best!
Dude! This is very entertaining and informative! Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for promotion and video this helping to understand about iPhone mics what kind choose for home and outdoor videos
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Review ! Thanks for that !
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching, and dropping me a line :)
Great video work. Thanks for the review. I bought one
Well done! Very informative for real world applications. I will be using it on my channel. Cheers!
Love it! Thanks for watching 🙏
Big thumb up for honest review
Thank you!
Congrats, suuuuper review!!
Thank you very much! Appreciate it😎
Great review Sam!
Thank you!
Thank you for the top notch content.
Thanks for giving it a chance ;)
Best review I’ve seen
Yay!! Thank you. Very kind! Thanks for watching 😁
L🥰VE your review and demo. I learned a lot from you and thank you for sharing. I greatly appreciate that.
Thank you! So glad it was useful! ♥️
Excellent informative video thanks!
Great review! Thank you
That’s great review for me!
Thank you! 🙇♂️
Very nicely explained. Thank you
Tq for this! It help me so much on how to use it.. hope for more videos
Hey brotha good video! Do you know a good setting for covers with vocals and acoustic at the same time?
@@samvarma hey man thanks for the reply I appreciate you putting effort into it!
I think you did a good job with it thanks!
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words :)
Thanks for all the information!
Thanks for stopping by to drop me a line! Glad it was helpful. 🍻
Great video! Is it possible to record directly into Logic or do you have to use MOTIV and export to a preferred DAW?
