I’m totally with you! I do some legit commercial film work as a side hustle but always loved the idea of vlogging so it’s hard for me to just use my phone as I’m familiar with professional gear. But, I proudly consider myself a casual vlogger and every clog on my channel is shot almost entirely with my iPhone! Much love brother ✌️✌️

I agree with you dude! So many people get caught up on what equipment to use to vlog/make other videos that they don't actually end up making anything simply because they're like "oh I don't have the money/equipment to make it." In my opinion, the main point of your video - regardless of whether it's a vlog or not - is to convey a story, and all your equipment is just a way to tell your story just in a slightly better way. Some parts of some of the videos I make are also shot on an iPhone (7 plus that too), and as much as it hurts when thinking that I'm not using my Canon, when I ask people if they can spot the difference while watching the video on a phone, most of them just don't notice it.
TL, DR - imo, how you tell your story plays a more important role in what you use to tell your story

I've been going through a similar thought process with my GoPro 7. I know it's not exactly the same scenario. I have all this extra garbage attached to the GoPro for "better vlogging." Strip it down, tell the story, get it done. That's what I'm shooting for this year.

while i know my way around a dlsr, something i didn’t expect was how socially awkward it is to film yourself with a bigger camera-for those in a similar position (where the act of filming yourself is getting in your way), using a phone or a smaller camera is super helpful.

We both have the same first name and I, like you, wasted money on the rode video micro before the phone came out and I lost so many shots trying to fiddle with the micro like an idiot. Additionally, I wasted money on a wide angle lens, a mirrorless camera body, and a rode mic pro and carried that giant rig when 90 percent of those day light shots could have worked fine on the iPhone. I'm so glad I saw this. SUBSCRIBED!

I’ve not read the comments because I can’t face it but can I trust that this internal mic will record singing as good as it does your voice? quick question, vlogging in public, for you personally going back to daily would u still daily the gh5 or could u see yourself doing the iPhone 11 daily because its more convenient plus u don't get kicked out of places more? every time I bring my rig to a public place like a store or a mall I get kicked out or asked to put it away and shamed for no filming, its different if they say hey just so you know we dont allow that here. but then I pull out my phone and no one says anything, just something I observed as you walked through that airport and no one really cared LOLOLOL

I’ll have to see if turning that setting off on my XR works like on the 11. I shot my last video on my phone because my GoPro was dead and I felt the image quality on the XR was much better. Had a clicking sound here and there but I think that was the Osmo 3 him all motor and some light music fixed that... Great video.

I have been using my iphone, from a 8 to 10r, and have used both a external and not external mics. i found the shure mic to be far superior to the mic on my phone becuase the older model iphones don’t have the sound quality and pick up all back ground noises where as the shure mic came with an app that allows me to change the focus of the audio to be more to what i need. especially becuase i sometimes do interviews or if i am in a crowded area if can get rid of the background noise better. sometimes i will use an actual interview mic with its own digital sound recorded if i want to make sure my audio for my interview is safe and good.
But really it comes down to what kind of phone you are using, what kind of video you are recording and how important is sound quality.

In this video it is bumped up quite a bit (probably too much actually) - but yeah, I would still add a limited to make it louder

I want to makr unboxing videos and would want to try not getting background noise. I was actually looking for a mic that will do such job but seeing this video, I want to try doing it your way.
    Thanks
