    Carried the original USMC for a year or so in the early 1970's. Was pleased to replace it with a Buck 120, better steel and balance. I do like the serrations, very useful on ropes and boxes... Always a joy to watch you throw a blade..

    • @DonnieBAllDay

      The 120 doesn't have better steel as much as it has better heat treat. Buck does an amazing job. Good choice you made

    I like your description of a combat utility knife. I have never owned a KBAR but they do look like great hunting knives. Not too expensive and a nice (sort of) Bowie style (?). One of my fav hunting blades is a SOG Navy Seal 2000 combat utility. Thanks for sharing Bro 🇺🇸 🍁 🇨🇦 🇳🇿

    The original utility or fighting knife was based off of the Marbles' "Ideal" model hunting knife. Marbles was the first to use stacked leather handles, and their design was copied by cutlery companies world-wide. Thanks for your review, Donnie.

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. And it all started when the US bought a Remington knife factory. The original USN blades were just rebranded Rems

    My wife has a really old KA-BAR that belonged to her Dad [USAF], and the tang appears to be peened where it emerges from the buttcap. The pin thing seems weak and a production shortcut. Seen one of these in a movie, THE HUNTED with Tommie Lee Jones.

ONLY thing I disagree with is the comments on the terrible balance, mine has balance spot just behind the guard bout quarter inch down the handle which I think makes it super balanced and fast in the turns ya know?

    HA bro no way I literally just bought this like 20 mins ago and wanted to watch some videos on it, I should've known you'd have one lol I got that Microtech Combat Troodon for my combat/self-defense knife and this one as my survival "everything else" knife. Killer/Perfect review as usual!
    BTW I wanted to add: I have a theory as to why some people experience their tang breaking - they're probably counterfeit and not a real Ka-Bar! Apparently it's a commonly counterfeited knife and I'm willing to bet they bought it from a non-reputable place like Amazon. To clarify what I mean, I've heard people will buy a real one from Amazon and then return a knock-off back to them which goes totally unnoticed and right back on the "shelf" to be sold again. It's the only thing I can think of that explains the vast difference in peoples experience in that regard! So to anyone reading this: BUY FROM REPUTABLE STORES/SITES!
    Thanks again man, IMO you're the best knife reviewer on TH-cam (my "opinion" in this case being an objective fact lol).
    Till next time!

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KA-BAR for some reason makes their stick tangs at 90 degree angles. A terrible design flaw. When they break, that's generally where and generally why.

    • @audreyazwell
      @audreyazwell ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hands down the best of this type are the Western WW2 8" fighting knives (unfortunately no longer made). It is longer, thicker, virtually "full tang", and suitable for the intended use of the Ka-Bar. Fighting, utility, survival. Most of the time the blade bends sideways at the handle or the handle bends before the tang breaks. The ONLY thing to really consider when purchasing a knife is "does it make me look cool or badass?" LOL.

      A second blade like the OEF defender or war machine makes a lot of sense vs an e tool.
      Ontario knives have horrible sheaths and esse is expensive. A kabar pinch gripped right against the guard doesn't turn in my hand. Cold steel's decent but I like the leather sheath for ease of deployment.

    Thanks for the review Donnie. I really like this knife, I have a Kabar 1220 U.S. Army version and I have been carrying that for years now. I'm kind of stuck in deciding between the D2 Kabar or the BK7. I've had a BK7 before but I've never had a Kabar in D2. I'm sort've leaning more towards the D2 for it's steel and edge retention and the kraton handle is more durable than the leather washers even though that and the dull grey makes it look like a toy knife. I don't beat on my kabars or anything the these other retards do, but I want peace of mind when I carry it. The Bk7 is a bit fat and the sheath is crap but I know it's a great chopper. I guess I'm just looking for that knife that is capable if and when I need it to be, and I've always loved Kabar. Thanks once again .

    The greatest failure of the western knife industry is that absaloutely horrific sandpaper coating from so many companies. I finally got myself a Tops Prather War Bowie (awesome knife) and stripped the coating from the bevel. 200% instant improvement but what was underneath the coating was absaloutely disgusting.

      stick tang. Round grip. Wrong point of balance. I would take it as a hunting knife over almost anything though. Its made exactly for that

    Have warmed up to Kabar over the years however it will only ever be a backup never a main. PS I HATE that style of sheath too. Once the clasp leather stretches I have no confidence in the sheath retaining the blade. Its a lazy cheap option for leatherworkers to do a sub par job. There are many better sheath clasp configurations than that. A complete deal breaker for me as I get older.

    i think the only people breaking or bending their kabars are using them as prybars

    I too am a Ka-bar heretic beause I dare to challenge the dogma of the Cult of Ka Bar. The original Ka-bar Marine knife just isn't a good choice for a fighting knife. Thier handles are too round and too slick. Although I would like to have a plain edge D2 extreme for the collection and possibly as a car knife.

      There were more kills with shovels than knives in Viet Nam. It's a combat shovel, sure, but its still not a combat fighting shovel. This knives is a combat utility knife. Nothing more. More people are killed with hammers and bats in this country than guns and knives. Go ahead and explain how that makes them combat fighting weapons.

      @@DonnieBAllDay that argument is as ridiculous as calling rifles assault rifles so tell me then what’s the exact criteria required for a knife to become a “combat fighting knife” im genuinely interested to know the guidelines it has to fall under to be considered as such also who’s deeming this as the set standard for “combat fighting knives”

      @@madstan8948 if the weight of a knife is designed to work as a controlled cutter, like in a hunting knife with a favorable MEAN measuring closer to a plus POB(like the KA-BAR), then it is not designed to be a fighting knife. The operable MEAN on those are near minus to minus, unlike throwers that can measure minus to zero but never plus. You're welcome
