Alien 3 is a 1992 American science-fiction horror film directed by David Fincher and written by David Giler, Walter Hill and Larry Ferguson from a story by Vincent Ward. It stars Sigourney Weaver reprising her role as Ellen Ripley and is the third film installment in the Alien franchise, preceded by Aliens (1986) and succeeded by Alien Resurrection (1997).

Pretty sure Ripley's alien took longer to be born because it was a queen, and it only chose that moment to pop out because it could sense that it was in danger.
Haven't seen Alien 3 since I was a child, imagine my surprise when the explanation I (apparently?) constructed for the prison was that it was ONLY inmates with no way off the planet, and no weapons to hijack stray transports, so isolation and hopelessness led them to turn to fanaticism to try and survive as best they could, forced into cooperation by necessity, through dogma.
I have to thank 7 year old me for improving my view of the film. Slightly. Even if it was a misunderstanding - not sure if I have it in me to rewatch to verify whether that is the case though :P

I got to see a pre-screening of the movie a couple of days before it came out (free tickets). They had a VIP section roped off in the middle of the theater for some people that had worked on it at a local sound stage or something. Anyway, when the title screen hit, my friend actually yelled out "Look! Aliens cubed!" to which everyone laughed, except the VIP section. Then later, near the end when Ripley dies he yells, "Hey! Ripley takes the Nestea Plunge!" and everyone lost it...except the VIP section that mostly got up and quietly walked out. 😄

Then just cut the scene at the start that shows us how it crashed so we’re left in the dark until this scene. It takes way too much time to re-establish what we already know.

I remember seeing Alien 3 for the first time when I was 12 years old and being mainly just flat out confused with what was happening. I didn't think it necessarily was a bad Alien film, I just thought it was kinda vague, boring and all around mind fucking. Especially seeing people like Hicks and Newt just killed off instantly. I wasn't even pissed really just confused as to why the main characters were killed off and why the studio chose a grossly under par story with 0 Alien action. It didn't make much sense to me then. Maybe with today's technology they could enhance the special effects and patch over some glaring editing issues.
The only technology that can fix this POS is a time machine so you can go back and burn that script before it gets made into a movie.
The part with Ripley examining Newt’s corpse is hilarious 😂.

Because really, what’s not to like about jokes involving the use of a child’s corpse as silly voiced hand puppets? That’s right up there with classic knee-slappers like Tarantino’s “shot in the face” sight gags, and Christopher Nolan’s Joker doing his “disappearing pencil trick!” Classic, classic hijinks, all of them.

I see this speeling mistake so often, it's weird
On the differing gestation rates: I always saw it as Queens probably take longer to gestate, and since the alien uses DNA from the host as part of it's genetic makeup (which is why the dog alien looks and moves different), the fact that dogs mature faster and have shorter lifespans is why it hatched so quickly from the dog.
That sounds plausible.
"Congratulations, you made it!" was such a plot twist for such a short skit, I'm impressed.

They also had to "Stay ahead of it" in The Happening
I remember absolutely adoring Alien and Aliens when I was younger and I couldn't wait to see the 3rd movie. And then I got so excited when my Dad rented Alien 3 from Blockbuster and I couldn't wait to watch it. Aaand then the opening scene completely crushed me, so I barely even paid attention to the rest of the film. Talk about an epic letdown
The alien in Ripley was a queen so that's why it took so long to grow.
And she was impregnated in crysosleep. She specifically tells Clemens that the side-effects can last over a week. Also the dude with the glasses in Alien 4 took longer because he had thyroid problems. So anything slowing the host metabolism would affect it.
@Jon Birch I understand that but let's both agree that alien 3 and 4 are bad.
Any work that builds off another is expanded lore. Aliens gave us the hive. Alien 3 gave us the genetic trait inheritance, etc. The real question is if what was introduced was done in a way that meshes well with the original concept. That’s how something like Alien becomes more interesting, or how something like the Star Wars prequels actually destroy. Not sure how I feel about drones molting into queens. In the 2010 AvP game, 6 molted because of the ingested royal jelly, a made up thing for collectible purposes. And the less we talk of the attempts to “expand” in AvP:R, the better.

I was disturbed by the level of my own geekiness, when you talked about the queen alien’s “tube thing” and my immediate response was to feel every sinew of my body screaming: “It’s called an ovipositor!”

Also, you saying “prison planet” made me desperately wish for you to do a parody of the Xenu mythos from Scientology. Or possibly one of Alex Jones’ videos.
And hahahahaha, I never noticed that opening exposition credit! This screenplay must’ve been written back when the whole “Double Y Chromosome= Criminality” hypothesis was popular, to such an extent that the screenwriters clearly thought it would sound cool and future-y if they included it.
(Admittedly, I was distracted by the knowledge that Charles Dance was NOT playing a Snidely Whiplashesque villain in this movie. And also by the fact that seeing Pete Poselthwaite’s name in opening credits immediately results in my brain melting down in throes of orgasmic exhilaration because PETE FUCKING POSELTHWAITE BITCHES!)

Too me, Alien 3 is not really happening. It's just a bad dream that Ripley is having while sleeping in the pod. It's a what if scenario, but other then that it's not canon. Neither is Alien resurrection. By the way, one piece of interesting trivia I read about The Thing is that Alien inspired John Carpenter in the way he made it. He saw the original Alien and while he really liked the movie, one thing about it that disappointed him was that it was obvious that it was a man in a rubber suit in some scenes. It bummed him out because most monster/alien movies at that point had been a guy in a rubber suit. So, when he was asked to direct the remake of The thing from another world, which he was a huge fan of. He thought of what better way of getting around a guy in a rubber suit then going back to the original novella from which the movie was based upon "Who goes there?". Instead of having another monster movie of a guy in a rubber suit, why not go with the original idea of a alien that can imitate other lifeforms and hide within them. Thus, we got the classic The thing. Which too me is the sister of the original Alien just because they are both so similar and are ground breaking in terms of what they did to the sci fi horror genre.
