Hades ALSO has the reputation of being the one guy Greeks feared saying the name of most. To be fair however, he's STILL a much cleaner guy than Zeus when it comes to his shenanigans (Zeus has countless murders and rape incidents in his criminal record while Hades has only ONE kidnapping to his name).
@@discountplaguedoctor88 Not to mention his other brother Poseidon did plenty of bad shit...most famous example probably being forcing himself on Medusa in Athena's Temple (Also seriously Athena, why you such a jealous bitch all the time? We can thank you for like, half the monsters in the mythology just because you got JEALOUS.) and got Medusa turned into the horrible monster she is now...

Also, you said it yourself: NONE of the Greek gods were actually good.
Yeah lmao. I just got into the series due to my sister,I didn’t even bother watching any of the movies since she kept on describing how horrible they were.
I read the books after the movies, and I would not say that. The books tell a good story, yes, but the writer often gets bogged down explaining things and forgets to actually write our main heroes as real human beings and characters...
Can you spoil a bit more ? I mean i watched the movie long ago ( or maybe 2 movies ) But from what i saw in the first 10 minutes of the video she wasn't that much did the books go deep into her psycky or something ? @@waddahyana494 yea she stayed with him because he smelled so bad that it masked Percy's smell from monsters (monsters can smell demigods). Would have been kinda cool if the movie actually showed him stepping out of the chair, TARDIS style, but nah, he's just a centaur and we'll never address how the wheelchair works, deal with it.
idk if i'm remembering this right, but although the lightning bolt was DESCRIBED as something that could destroy half the country, wasn't it kinda... pew pew in the books as well?
@@someguy4853 The reason why they use swords and classic weapons is because regular metals don't hurt monsters. They use celestial bronze (I believe this is the name in English), a special magic metal that does, among other magic materials and relics. But as you can imagine, it's a lot more rare than regular metals, so they save it mostly for melee weapons. One guy has made bullets out of it once in the books, but it was for a special occasion: an actual army of monsters, where it was almost impossible to miss a target and waste ammo. Now tell me if the movie came even close to coming up with something that logical or interesting.
indeed he does, in fact he hates it badly enough that he called out or even flat out roasted the filmmakers, if you have done badly enough that the author is calling you out then your in big trouble.
@@obairna2285 Hades is pretty nice in the books. He is petty, yes, he is bitter, yes, but he is by far one of the best deities in the book. Zeus and Hera, on the other hand...
In the book, when Luke was revealed to be the Lightning Thief, it was gut-wrenching and a huge backstab. In the movie, it's basically: *"sup, i'm the lightning thief".*
I know right? plus I am really disappointed of how they did the mystery around Percy's father in the book it's this big mystery and it comes up this huge emotional grasp and in the movie it's like oh yeah you're the son of Poseidon get used to it

It's and the parts they did change piss me off. The biggest is that how the staff violently try and force them to stay, when in the myth and the book nothing was forcing the people to stay with the lotus eaters, it's just that it's basically heaven so why would you ever want to leave it? Hell the only reason they do so in both the book and the myth is because there are important things that must be done.
@Animestar17 In the books there are no Lotus flowers and Percy finds out something is wrong on his own when he notices someone that looks like he's stuck in the 70s only to realise he actually from the 70s.
@@invidatauro8922 Yup its magic. It makes you forget everything important in your life. After a couple of hours, Percy could barely remember his mom's name. It makes you never want to leave, to stay completely engrossed in the games there. And to top it all off, it makes time speed up, a couple hours in the hotel is 5 days outside. @@Hewylewis Not really. It's all in good fun and as someone who is both a Potterhead and a Pokemon fan I think it's funny enough. He literally eats the angry comments of salty Pokemon fans. That shit cracks me up
I actually stopped reading the books because Potter's only character trait was his selfishnes. He's always complaining about his life problems to his friends like a jerk. Also, as a young boy it was pretty easy to see that the books were written by a woman who doesn't know how boys think
Not saying HP is more than a shitty oveeblown fandom, but it sadly is the better "young adult" adaptation. Doug's attack on Potter is an extension on how much better the adaptation(at least based off the books, not the author's later trans+/anti-trans viewpoints) was handled.
@@nodorog448 Her views aren't anti trans, they're pro woman. Her argument is that the female identity is being erased and co-oped by men. She's not denying they are people, just that it takes more to be a woman than cutting off your peen and stuffing your sack into that small testicle cavity in your abdomen and pretending it's now a vagina. It's like giving someone a skin graft and pretending they are a dime piece instead of disfigured. My statement isn't a condemnation of the grafted, only that they aren't the same as someone who isn't grafted
Depressing dot Co. In the books/ movies, Severus Snape was a horribly mean teacher to Harry Potter. Then years later Harry had a son and gave him the middle name “Severus”.
Dear directors who want to write something with Greek mythology. HADES IS NOT SATAN!!! HE IS NOT EVIL THE ONLY MYTH WHERE HE DOES SOMETHING VILLAINOUS IS WHEN HE JUSTIFIABLY PUNISHES SOMEONE
Yeah, Hades is usually pretty chill in the underworld in mythology (He even understands that his domain has more people than the living world). It's always annoying to see adaptations where he's reduced to 'devil trope'
The books are basically the things you loved about the Lotus Casino scene for the whole thing, with characters that aren't watered down Hollywood versions. My friend said it best when this was announced to be coming out, and said their opinion didn't change after seeing it: "Percy Jackson is great, and would make a great movie series, but would NEVER get the budget to do it right."
agreed it would not get the budget to do it right, but ive always thought it would be best to do it as a tv series live action or animated would do this series right.
budget doesn't mean shit if the director/writers turn the characters and stories that made the books succesfull in the first place, into every generic Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings wannabe. this movie had MORE than enough money put into it to make something great, but you just can't pay "giving a shit" with money.
Spoiler Alert. Things missing from the book: 1. There is a thing called the Mist, which prevents normal mortals from noticing the Greeks gods. 2. Percy is a hilarious protagonist with all the one-liners. 3. The mission is to get Zeus's lightning bolt back from the Underworld, but Percy is only really going to save his mom. 4. The pearls they're searching for in the movie were just given to Percy in St. Louis in the book. 5. Sally stays behind in the Underworld, while Annabeth and Grover only try to sacrifice themselves to save Sally. 6. Percy has a fight with Ares, not Luke, at the end of the book. 7. Percy can talk to horses. 8. Capture the Flag was more fun in the book and Poseidon claimed Percy as his son when it was finished. 9. Percy was twelve, not sixteen. 10. Percy was given the quest by the Oracle and left Camp Half-Blood in full view of everyone. He didn't need to sneak out. There is more, but these were the biggest inconsistencies to come to mind. I'm not saying the movie was perfect, far from it, but please, read the book if you want the whole story. I'm afraid the Critic's mean-spirited critique toward one of my favorite book series might be turning people away. Also, leave Harry Potter alone. He doesn't deserve to be yelled at and abused by the Critic.
Also, why people aren't using guns: Magical metals. The weaponry in the series is made from specific types of metals that are the only thing that can hurt the mythical beings of the books. In the half-blood camp the most common is Celestial bronze, thought there are others. And vice versa, these don't work on mortals.
I know I've never read the Percy Jackson books myself, nor have I seen the movies, but I'm glad to see someone defending a book series they know and love so well. Respect! :) I will say that it's the Critic's job to review movies, not the books, so I am kinda split on how he should review movies based on books. I mean, if he's not interested in reading the books (maybe to save on time), I should say it should be fair for him to at least consult the fanbases for the books the movies are based on so he'll know some facts going into a review. I mean, if he's seen all of Avatar: The Last Airbender before reviewing the Last Airbender movie, why can't he go to a little more length on stuff like this? If he doesn't like it, fine, but I'd say if he did do a little more research of the films based on books he's not a fan of, it would show a little more respect for his audience(s). Also, I totally agree, Harry Potter is awesome. He does not deserve to be abused by the Critic. I honestly thought that was the most mean-spirited part of this review. Very disheartening. :/
@@AishaVonFossen I get that the Critic is trying to judge a movie on its own merit, but at the same time, no movie is going to perfectly represent a book. Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson series, has five books to get through the story. It makes the experience much richer, especially since we're in Percy's point-of-view. You feel like you're there with Percy, learning and growing with him. As for the two movies, they only had so much time. We're not in Percy's point-of-view and so you feel more like an outsider and the things they change make the story feel muddled. I agree. It is disheartening that the Critic is so dismissive of both Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. They are both well defined, spirited characters and he just ignores their best qualities by choosing to only focus on what he considers to be their worst aspects.
@@elizabethjanemorgan3607 Oh yeah, it is common that movies aren't always close to the books, though I will say that some film adaptations get closer to the original source materials than others. I'm sure the books are much richer, as they take more of their time to tell a much more elaborate story. And to be honest, I kinda like the idea of the "wowed youngster" cliche, since we are seeing it in the main character's point of view, as someone connected to the fantastical world, and yet entirely brand new to it as well. I will agree with some of the tired tropes that the Critic points out about the "wowed youngster" cliche, but then again, who wouldn't be wowed by being introduced to a new world? One of the ways that made Harry so relatable for me is that like us, he was always wowed by being introduced to new parts of the Wizarding World he had never seen before in every book/film. And based on what you say, it sounds like the same thing for Percy. Yeah, I can see what you're saying about the movie's point of view. I guess it's pretty common in movies for their points of view to shift between all the characters, I guess in an attempt to flesh them out, but then again, it can also distract from the point of view in the story that really matters, like, as you say, Percy. Yeah, while I agree that Harry had some weak points in his character (but then again, as any character does, even the best ones), I agree, Harry is a well-defined, spirited character. And honestly, Harry has had to do a shit ton of work that really a lot of the adults in the Wizarding World should have been more on top of themselves, instead of, you know, leaving a *KID* to save *their* day! I don't care if he was some kind of prophesied "chosen one," he was still a kid who was thrown into a whole other environment that started out completely new to him, and he had to learn how it all worked, on top of defeating a powerful overlord, AND juggling his wizarding studies and personal life all at the same time! Harry definitely has my respect for surviving all that crap. LOL

You know listening to the NC nitpick stuff that was explained in the book really makes you realize how much BS the mist covers up. Edit: thanks this is the most likes I've ever had for a comment. Just to clarify I dont think plotholes in themselves are a good determinant of the quality of various fiction because every fictional story has them. I think they're only a problem if they break your suspension of disbelief. If you are watching a movie and go wait that doesn't make any sense cause of something that happened earlier it's very difficult to regain and maintain your continued investment and enjoyment in the movie.
24:25 rick had no control over the movie. Even he hated it. He sent in a bunch of suggestions for it but they took none of them. He didn't make that line.
The fact that I’m constantly thinking “no, that’s explained by x detail in the books” speaks LEAGUES about this movie’s awful worldbuilding. Easily in my top 2 most hated films.
@@TehWhiteTiger I always wanted to see this happen in Percy Jackson. You know those cups that can have any drink. What if Percy asked for hydroclric acid and dumped it on someone.
icecream hero what if he accidentally spilled that on Luke when he was still in the Hermès cabin. I mean, Kronos would probably find a new follower, but it would at least slow him down. Plus it’s explained in the extended book Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods that ghosts can’t lie, so when Luke’s judged in the underworld by the three golden masked men, a lot if not all of Kronos’s plans would’ve been unveiled to the Gods, and they could’ve stopped him while he was still weak in Tartarus. I take these books too seriously...
The fact that Doug doesn’t tell us about the all the things the movie doesn’t explain with examples from the books speaks leagues about his awful preparation for a book-based movie.
the beauty of the percy jackson books and fandom is that the fandom doesnt need to imagine themselves as the main character, and we dont want to. we imagine ourselves as another character in the world, we go along with percy and his friends. we're with him and cheering him on his first day of camp, crying with him as he see's beloved friends die, and we laugh at his corny jokes. the books use that angle to give him an actual personality and make him someone who we love. he has good and bad traits, he has people he loves, he has things that are usually sacrificed to make a character more "relatable". hes unique, and not really like anyone. i cant relate to half of the things he does and is, however i relate to the world itself. a place where kids who dont fit in and lose hope in themselves belong. its even easier for me, a kid with adhd who's disorder holds them back, it gives me a place to feel like i belong. it even gives a way for people without adhd or dyslexia to see themselves in this world, with characters such as percy's mom, and racheal, but they too have personalities and goals many people dont. when my problems to do with adhd get really bad, i'll often start reading percy jackson books. you know what i wont do?? watch the FUCKING movies that take everything i love OUT THE WINDOW. they are a disgrace to the books which make me feel warm and comforted, and i hope the show is better then the clusterfuck that were the movies.

Percy is isn’t even shown to be a “loser” in the movie however in the book it spent a fair portion of the book showing that he is being bullied and nobody even cares
James Games well not exactly it actually more that he is trying to defend the bullied kid (Grover) but not being able to do anything without getting in trouble
To be honest, at the beginning of the series most of the other demigods were indifferent to Percy at worst. If anyone in the book called Percy a "loser" (other than an unconvincing Clarisse), that person would be Percy himself. Considering his background with an abusive stepfather and multiple expulsions until he turned twelve in the books, this self-depreciation is somewhat justified.

JSB Yeah, pretty much, I think it was book seven where they even tried to demand Harry to not use it in public, since it gives him away, but he replies back that it’s his most helpful/useful spell!
Rick Riordan wrote a letter to all teachers saying that he would rather have his teeth pulled out without anesthesia than have students watch the movie
I am just as disappointed in Rick for letting this happen as Harry Potter's movies were only as goos because of tight author control on them while Riordan was hands off obviously. He should have learned by this point in time that it is a rarity for books to be adapted properly and it's as much the author's responsibility to take initiative as anyone else's.
Considering the fact that one of the major conflicts in the series was godly parents being divine deadbeats who allowed their children to die/suffer without any love, support, or protection, the whole Poseidon-bails-Percy-out-constantly thing is a huge slap in the face. Percy has a complicated relationship with his father; he wanted to make him proud but was often let down and hurt/confused by his distance. Like Luke, he had to struggle to come to terms with his identity and godly heritage and even though he didn’t betray the gods, he never let them off the hook for their shitty behavior, either. GOD, the book is so much better, I’m going to go back to pretending it doesn’t exist
@@Ze_eT True the Lotus Eater connection was more overt in the movie, but the scene was more deep in the book since Percy managed to figure out on his own that people had been trapped in here for years and managed to force himself to leave. The allegory for addiction was way stronger in the book, the Lotus Casino drew people in just by giving all sorts of entertainment to distract them from all their troubles and concerns. They just stay there and ignore anything else. Percy and the gang didn't steal a car while being chased by guards, they walked out the front door while the casino employees were tempting them to stay by offering them a membership with access to all sorts of new games. It was a less action-packed escape but overall it was a way more unpleasant experience for them all since they had to fight their urges to just stay. @@rhiannonthrasher7747 the second movie was horrible compared to the first movie. Yes they first movie was bad in what they changed. But the second movie did something that completely screws up the rest of the series
I'm praying that Percy Jackson and the Olympains will get picked up again and get the respect it deserves. The books were OUTSTANDING and this movie along with its sequel treated it's story and characters as blank states and uninteresting characters in general.
What you need is an ANIME series. Each book can be a season, or every two books can be one season. THEN, maybe a year or so after the series ends, you can start up the Heroes of Olympus series!
Here's fun facts they changed, removed or fucked up from the book: -Percy and Annabeth were 12 in books; -Grover was not black; -No explanetion of the mist; -I don't remember a hydra in the first book; -NO FRICKING ARES; -The reason why Percy's birth is a no-no; -Portrayal of Hades; -No retrieving a thingy for Ares; -The bed shop; -Portrayal of Charon -No Cerberus; -Portrayal of the underworld; -Sally was the one who stayed in underworld, not Grover -Capture the flag (it was not red vs blue) -No Argus; -No mention of Kronos -No fight between Percy and Ares; -Luke's betrayal, it was different in the book
It never bothered me if somebody flipped a character's race (unless the plot required that character to be that specific race) so I don't mind Grover being black but I cannot forgive them changing Annabeth's hair colour.
And where was-oh what was her name...Clarisse? That one bitch who was a daughter of Ares I think, who ended up coming around toward the end of the series? Edit: not to mention that she played an integral role in the ongoing plot lol
That's kinda why this movie is a horrible adaptation. A good adaptation should be able to stand up on it's own, without the source material propping it up. As an example, look at Harry Potter. Sure, the movies change a lot of things, but they still stand up and make sense without reading the books.
Yeah. In the books, it's mentioned that the wheelchair was enchanted to make room for Chiron's legs. If only the movie cared about the small details like the books did.
Spoiler Alert: That ending where you all had to look on your phones to see if Jubilee was actually a vampire made me laugh for five minutes. Well done.
Seriously. The first movie screw up so bad I don't even know HOW they managed to make a second since all the actual story elements were botched. The whole plot of the books hinges on anticipation for Percy's eventual sixteenth birthday due to a prophecy. So naturally, lets make him already 16 in the movie!
The other day, I kid you not, I was in a job training thing and the instructor started off with “as you know” and immediately I thought “shit, I’m in a bad movie”
Thing is, ypu can't make a movie about Greek mythology and have a Greek centaur who has been around at the actual Ancient Greece call Heracles "Hercules".
firepiplup To be fair, due to various pop culture iterations in the West, Hercules is usually used interchangeably in both the Greek and Roman retellings. Though IIRC at least the books called him Heracles.
A FEW of the dumb changes they made from the book: *Percy and Annabeth are 12 in the first book, not teenagers *No mention of Clarisse (daughter of Ares and Percy's nemesis) in the movie. *No Mr. D aka Dionysus (overseer of the camp) in the movie (Yes I know they were both in the sequel but let's face it the movies were already dead to society by then) *Persephone's pearls were something they happened across by chance, not Dora the Explorer-type checkpoints *Percy didn't learn he was the son of Poseidon until the water healed him in capture the flag *Annabeth was the first person Percy met at camp, and they don't start out with animosity, just tepid awkwardness. *Percy is SENT on the quest to the underworld to get the bolt back from Hades and clear his name (he doesn't just sneak out), who everyone thinks really stole it. *Ares the war god is SUPER important in the book. HE gives the crew the lightning bolt hidden in a backpack given to him by Luke. *Luke being revealed as the villain isn't revealed until after Percy gets back to camp, and it's actually a decently done twist.
Also they completely ignored Annabeth and Luke's past until the second movie and didn't even mention the mist which explained a lot of things that Nostalgia Critic joked about
I remember listening to the Audiobook early last year. I got to the 3rd book but stopped cause I had a few other things going on. All these points are correct! Maybe one day someone will adapt the book correctly instead of the hot garbage we got =/
@@nifralo2752 The only real way to do a proper film adaptation of Percy Jackson is in the same way they did Harry Potter IE with a set of child actors that are the right age and have a film a year as they grow older and go through each adventure in the books. Plus a big plot point in the books is Percy's age because he has just hit the age where he is strong enough for monsters to start noticing him more, and Percy coming of age is also a plot point in the later books.
The books: Yeah Annabeth is blonde, Percy has sea green eyes, he doesn't just chill underwater it's more like he has a bubble, Grover isn't black, and Percy found out his heritage during war games which actually allowed time for Luke to be shown as a guy who just wanted to make things good for everyone in his cabin with him. The movie: Nah
TheRealKnight32 You forgot another thing they got wrong in the movie Chiron has the body of a white stallion He isn’t a chestnut colored stallion. Can’t you guys get anything right in movie based off of a successful book series?
James Callanan I know right? I think he’s much better black. And I guess after this movie came out I saw art of the characters and how they were supposed to look like and I saw Grover and oh boy I was like Grover is much better black than white. Don’t get me started on Nico de Angelo. The fanart is way better.
And those were the least important changes they did in the movie. I really don't care about their skin/eye/hair colours (but in the books, there's a lot of variety), but the changes they did to the Story and characters? Its kinda devastating 🙈
Having just re-read the series, one of the things that stands out to me watching the movie first time through is how Ms. Dodds immediately tells Percy in her first attack "you stole the lightning bolt" instead of just assuming his guilt and attacking him on sight, and then later asking "where is it (without saying its name)" like she did in the book. By being vague and indirect, it set up the Kindly ones to be more mysterious, left it up for Grover and Annabeth to theorize that maybe there was more going on there than Hades being the Thief. Just a perfect early red flag that story telling and Subtlety had no meaning in the movie lol.
It's just like how Percy in the books didn't immediately get put in the Poseidon cabin. He actually spent the first week or two with the Hermes cabin because that's where demigods who've not had their parent confirmed stay.
How to make a good percy Jackson reboot 1.buy the books 2.find a transcript of the books 3.copy it. 4. Go get your google doc of the script 5.paste 6.edit
Indeed. He wasn't a complete and utter moron, he was a decent kid with bad luck sure, but he wasn't exactly book smart. He was more the street smart kid with issues at home, given he had a single mom who married an asshole to protect him and his only friend was the weird kid with a limp And then the demon from hell comes in.
While that would be nice, given what they've done with these two films, the prospect of any company giving a team the time of day (let alone a check) is unlikely at best for such a project. It makes me wonder why they do this? Yes, somethings in books need to be cut to save time, this is to be expected. However, to quote a certain book-tuber, "you can't just keep hacking and hacking away at a plot until it fits a two-hour run-time!" And he's right about that. Some things need to be cut or trimmed down, but when you hack away at a plot or God-forbid, change it so drastically that it's barely even remotely like the original source material, I got to ask "why even bother?" Or, if you're going to change things, give a reason and then do it the best you can. I argue that you should be as faithful to the plot and characters as possible, but I understand you can't have a movie go on for 6+ hours, or less someone will get greedy and slice up those six hours into three movies when the original book barely had enough for one movie, let alone three. The point is... why? The original novel's story is simple but complex. Yes, Percy and his friends still went to these locations but for different reasons. I kinda get where they were coming from, making the pearls into a treasure hunt and spreading them across the country... but at the same time, the book's plot was MORE then serviceable enough to follow, there was no need to change it or dumb it down to a simple treasure hunt when they STILL went to these places (and more-so if I remember right.) Why make it into a treasure hunt? Why dumb it down into an even simpler story by removing the Oracle and making it into a cliche rebellious youth storyline? I don't get it, nor will I probably ever.
@@thyvideomaker3063 Harry is a character we can identify with because his struggle to fit in is natural. NC about the only thing loyal to the book: This is actually the only clever thing in this movie! If the rest of the movie had been this clever it would’ve been pretty awesome. Oof.
I find the movie entertaining if I turn off my brain and forget about the connections to the book and with the changes it has it is rather easy to just disconnect it from the book
Didn't read the books, still didn't like the movie. It was okay. A decent movie you watch in the background whole doing other stuff. But it wasn't good.
I read both Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus, and I'm severely disappointed by the fact that this movie and its sequel are the only things people know about series. Let's all pray and hope that one day, we'll get an accurate and awesome adaptation. Maybe a Netlix animated series in the style of Avatar or Voltron Legendary Defender, so that one day it will get the recognition it deserves.
I like how Harry Potter is the runt of the students learning to be bland characters. It kinda subtly says that Harry is more intersting than the bland characters in other films
I didn’t even realize that symbolism, I just thought Dough just didn’t like Harry Potter but him being more interesting and awesome than the characters actually makes a lot of sense!
I laughed so hard that EVERYTHING DOUG NITPICKED WAS DESCRIBED ON THE BOOK GODDAMMIT(or was never there on the first place) I never saw the movie and I never knew it was THIS dumb
I saw the movie before I read the book as I was visiting my cousin's family who love the books and after seeing it they were so mad I was just sitting there like it was a meh movie after reading the book I understand all the hate.
He does have a bit more personality though. Like his passion for quidditch, for example, and his relationships with Hagrid and Dobby, which make him more interesting than just being "the chosen one."
i watched the movie for the first time without knowing how much the fandom hates it and was absolutely appalled to find out that the writers basically changed everything. it’s not the same story.
Strange. They say because Percy’s brain is wired to understand Ancient Greek, he thinks he’s dyslexic. I’m Greek, learned Ancient Greek in an early age and English was really easy to pick up as a language because of how many Greek words are in it. Also, why do they keep making Hades Satan? He was probably one of the quietest and least troublemaking of the gods. Save for an instance or two, he always minded his own business, had a shit job and he did it unconditionally, why do they always make him the Devil?
because hades is the god of the underworld and therefore everybody believes he is just like lucifer. it is dumb. i know and i hated too. zeus was far worse than hades. he just takes care of the dead. thats it
@@Revan-eb1wb eeeeh not really? I mean, yeah, there's the whole kidnapping thing, but there are many versions of them, and I've never heard of Persephone downright hating her husband
I like how the movie completely removed Ares from the equation even though he sets everything into motion and the only thing Luke does in the book really is give Percy the messed up boots and fights him at the end.
Luke in the movie: “my dads a jerk, I’ve never met him” Luke in the play: “I met the guy once, and once was enough” Even more evidence that TLT play is more accurate to the book
Honestly, Nostalgia Critic should review the Lightning Thief book. It's clearly a book that a lot of people loved as a child. Also, the author's son had ADHD and dyslexia and was insecure about it. So that's why he made all demigods have it.
@@nifralo2752 I wouldn't call that insulting, unless you consider Ancient Greek a bad thing. But it feels tacked on as a excuse, and something that if it was really true, someone would have noticed in that stories world eventually.
Well, they do. People with dyslexia and adhd still exist in this world without being demigods. It’s just that all demigods have it. Because of the excuse given in the book. But regular humans still have both afflictions to. And demigods always realize they’re demigods at some point. It could be because they realized the reason behind their adhd/dyslexia, but it’s usually because monsters hunt them down and it gets easier to do that the older they get. Of course, almost none of that is canon, it’s just a speculation I made based off what I remember from the books, which I haven’t read in a decade. But it seems unlikely literally every person with dyslexia and adhd in this universe is a demogod
Yeah, in this universe, the Demigods are misdiagnosed with dyslexia and adhd. Because normal humans are like “yes this is what that sounds like“ because it’s the only thing they know. But in reality demigods show those symptoms because they are always alert for battle and Greek is their first reading language
@@FastForwardPlans Demigods are typically discovered and herded to CHB around 12 years old. The chances of them encountering Ancient Greek prior to discovering they are demigods and realizing they can understand it much better than they should is low at best. Demigods are literally tied to Ancient Greece because of their blood. Not all dyslexic people in Percy Jackson can read Ancient Greek, only the demigods because the source of their dyslexia is their godly parentage.
The part that I was genuinely offended was the part that Percy left Grover in the underworld. PERCY LEAVES HIS MOTHER BEHIND IN THE NOVEL. He starts this mission to rescue his mother, but when the time comes he decides to sacrifice his dearest wish for his friends and world. That's the moment when a troublesome teenager truly becomes a hero. And here, as Doug points out, he is an asshole who literally kills his own friend for his mother.
Spelter The issue was that Percy needed Grover and Annabeth if he was going to stop the war, and he said in the book that he would rather take his mother’s place than sacrifice his friends.
Zachary Gilmore actually in both the book and the movie it still doesn’t make sense as to why Percy just doesn’t leave the bitchy cunt in Hell because if she’s not going to date Percy in the books or the movie than her character serves no purpose at all.
Light Yagami Annabeth was a key character to Luke’s redemption and development. (Spoilers from the books Luke was the one who was the true hero by the end of the series) Annabeth was also the link that permitted Percy not die due the alchilles curse.
I feel bad for your parents if you think that not wanting to leave them in hell makes you an asshole. I also question your morals if you think trading your own mother who loved and raised for two people you just met is heroic. And did Percy take Riptide and decapitate Grover? No, so he did not “literally kill” him.
17:40 That’s actually not true. In the third book, a guy uses bronze bullets in his plane to kill an army of monsters. Also, in the first book of the second series, there is a shotgun that shoots bronze shells.
The reason they don’t use it more often cause celestial steel and imperial gold and stygian iron are hard to come by and it would be better to use it to create swords than bullets plus that guy is Annabeth’s father
even the gods couldn't make the mythical materials, and iirc the guy, annabeth's dad, melted down a bunch of her weapons into the bronze penetrators for custom shells used by a sopwith camel.
I hated the Percy Jackson movies! They were terribly acted and casted. They also got some of the main plot points wrong and I wish they wouldn't have made these movies.
@@dortymakaloni7861 the second movie basically combined elements from books 2-5 because they fucking knew they wouldn't get a third movie... Then still teased Talia at the end.
Wintermute01001 actually Christianity is Greek mythology blended together and mixed with some Asian & Indian bullshit & some bullshit the Jews made up and then the court on nycia decided what stayed in so the fact that there are parallels is to be expected
Heck, that probably would annoy Byzantines (medieval Christian Greeks) too. They knew how to keep Greek mythology and Christian theology separate. And when writing stories about pre-Christian Greek characters they didn't try to insert Christian doctrines into their beliefs.
@@backupaccountforcooldaddyj7895 Please stop trying to perpetuate misconceptions circulated by fundamentalist Christian literature, anti-theists, and neo-pagans.

i gave a more in-depth explanation to another comment, but to sum it up, look a little deeper at the character he is playing. it is actually a reversed compliment saying harry fails at being mediocre. With it so over the top, it isnt as clear whether or not he likes the character, but he does say harry is better than the other characters that showed up.
Victor Purificação I think the implication is that he actually likes Harry Potter 🤔 his “class” is to teach protagonists how to be boring, which Harry is failing at, meaning he is actually a good character.
Critic also stated before that he was fairly neutral on the franchise and just couldn't get into the films. That's definitely not what I'd consider hatred. I also see his sketch as showing that, while HP occasionally utilizes the tropes he's criticizing, it does still try to do it's own thing more so.
Mugetsu I actually love the books, yes I watched the movie first because they made me watch it in school, but to this day if I turn my brain off and keep the movie separate from the book I find it slightly entertaining

The reason why they use swords and classic weapons is because regular metals don't hurt monsters. They use celestial bronze (I believe this is the name in English), a special magic metal that does, among other magic materials and relics. But as you can imagine, it's a lot more rare than regular metals, so they save it mostly for melee weapons. agreed it would not get the budget to do it right, but ive always thought it would be best to do it as a tv series live action or animated would do this series right.
Plus the final fight was a thousand times more badass
budget doesn't mean shit if the director/writers turn the characters and stories that made the books succesfull in the first place, into every generic Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings wannabe.
this movie had MORE than enough money put into it to make something great, but you just can't pay "giving a shit" with money.
Spoiler Alert.
Things missing from the book:
Respect! :)
I will say that it's the Critic's job to review movies, not the books, so I am kinda split on how he should review movies based on books.
LOL

the beauty of the percy jackson books and fandom is that the fandom doesnt need to imagine themselves as the main character, and we dont want to. we imagine ourselves as another character in the world, we go along with percy and his friends. we're with him and cheering him on his first day of camp, crying with him as he see's beloved friends die, and we laugh at his corny jokes. the books use that angle to give him an actual personality and make him someone who we love. he has good and bad traits, he has people he loves, he has things that are usually sacrificed to make a character more "relatable". hes unique, and not really like anyone. i cant relate to half of the things he does and is, however i relate to the world itself. a place where kids who dont fit in and lose hope in themselves belong. its even easier for me, a kid with adhd who's disorder holds them back, it gives me a place to feel like i belong. it even gives a way for people without adhd or dyslexia to see themselves in this world, with characters such as percy's mom, and racheal, but they too have personalities and goals many people dont. when my problems to do with adhd get really bad, i'll often start reading percy jackson books. you know what i wont do?? watch the FUCKING movies that take everything i love OUT THE WINDOW. they are a disgrace to the books which make me feel warm and comforted, and i hope the show is better then the clusterfuck that were the movies.

The lotus eater part of the movie was the best part. And the most accurate to the book. Funny coincidence.

The whole plot of the books hinges on anticipation for Percy's eventual sixteenth birthday due to a prophecy. So naturally, lets make him already 16 in the movie!

Hercules was the Roman form. Greek form was Heracles.
The more you know
honestly though, I think most people prefer the Hercules form
Thing is, ypu can't make a movie about Greek mythology and have a Greek centaur who has been around at the actual Ancient Greece call Heracles "Hercules".
Maybe it had something to do with Heracles translating to “Hera’s (Zeus’ wife and sister) glory”, and Hera HATED him!
firepiplup To be fair, due to various pop culture iterations in the West, Hercules is usually used interchangeably in both the Greek and Roman retellings.
Though IIRC at least the books called him Heracles.
Yup.
Percy's Mom still dates Gabe in the books because his "pungent odor" repels the monsters that would otherwise come to attack Percy.
24:40 "Call off the amber alert guys. This unemployed alcoholic stepfather says the child is the kidnapper this time."
A FEW of the dumb changes they made from the book:
*Percy and Annabeth are 12 in the first book, not teenagers
*No mention of Clarisse (daughter of Ares and Percy's nemesis) in the movie.
*No Mr. D aka Dionysus (overseer of the camp) in the movie
(Yes I know they were both in the sequel but let's face it the movies were already dead to society by then)
*Persephone's pearls were something they happened across by chance, not Dora the Explorer-type checkpoints
*Percy didn't learn he was the son of Poseidon until the water healed him in capture the flag
*Annabeth was the first person Percy met at camp, and they don't start out with animosity, just tepid awkwardness.
I can forgive them aging up the characters for the film if it means we avoid any Jake Lloyd stuff.
Also they completely ignored Annabeth and Luke's past until the second movie and didn't even mention the mist which explained a lot of things that Nostalgia Critic joked about

James Callanan I know right? I think he’s much better black. And I guess after this movie came out I saw art of the characters and how they were supposed to look like and I saw Grover and oh boy I was like Grover is much better black than white. Don’t get me started on Nico de Angelo. The fanart is way better.
Yes and the second one...talia
This is just another reason the books are better

Waiting for someone to redo the movies as an actually good series
While that would be nice, given what they've done with these two films, the prospect of any company giving a team the time of day (let alone a check) is unlikely at best for such a project.
It makes me wonder why they do this? Yes, somethings in books need to be cut to save time, this is to be expected. However, to quote a certain book-tuber, "you can't just keep hacking and hacking away at a plot until it fits a two-hour run-time!" And he's right about that. Some things need to be cut or trimmed down, but when you hack away at a plot or God-forbid, change it so drastically that it's barely even remotely like the original source material, I got to ask "why even bother?"
Or, if you're going to change things, give a reason and then do it the best you can.

Yeah, anyone who read at least one book of the Percy Jackson series hated the movies
I don’t hate the movie but dear god did they fuck up so many plot lines. Aries daughter wasn’t even in the movie.
I find the movie entertaining if I turn off my brain and forget about the connections to the book and with the changes it has it is rather easy to just disconnect it from the book
I’ve never been so angry after leaving a movie theater after watching this piece of shit

They did a musical.
A bunch of fantasy books would be better with animated adaptations rather than live-action, but somehow "professionals" do not see that...
The musical is good
Josie Jugalbot yeah the only one thing of accuracy of the books is A FREAKING MUSICAL AND NOT THE DANG MOVIE!!
Amen, dude. The books are actually really good and complex, I'm still to this day so pissed about this movie
Oh my god, Doug. You did not just talk about this? Number 1 rule about being a Percy Jackson fan. The movies never existed.

Oh right, that's her name. Sorry, I keep forgetting.

I saw the movie before I read the book as I was visiting my cousin's family who love the books and after seeing it they were so mad I was just sitting there like it was a meh movie after reading the book I understand all the hate.
Honestly, saw the movie.... All I remember is Uma Therman saying "I knew your daddy."
Good.
Why didnt Percy's mom just move to a place with terrible smell instead og being in a terrible relationship?
The sequel was waaaaaaaaaay worse. Yeah...I know what I said. This is bad, but the sequel is something else
Harry Potter has most of the basic tropes as these other movies, but he does them well.
That’s why he’s picked on xD
Yep😂😂😂
He does have a bit more personality though. Like his passion for quidditch, for example, and his relationships with Hagrid and Dobby, which make him more interesting than just being "the chosen one."
He’s also gay
Why does JK Rowling has to do this
@@NYuu05 Dumbledore is gay not Harry and it was heavily hinted at in the books
Chen Dror It was a meme on how every character in Harry Potter are gay
i watched the movie for the first time without knowing how much the fandom hates it and was absolutely appalled to find out that the writers basically changed everything. it’s not the same story.
There are instances where that worked. For example, the How to Train Your Dragon franchise is a much looser adaptation.
I know, right? And he's basically the only God with a functional marriage, for the most part

Many of the plot holes in the movies were explained pretty well in the books (I seriously hate these movies, but the books are still amazing)
True dat.
I like how the movie completely removed Ares from the equation even though he sets everything into motion and the only thing Luke does in the book really is give Percy the messed up boots and fights him at the end.
@@shamwowser6449 Luke doesn't even fight him at the end in the book, he poisons him then leaves. And this all happens after the bolt is returned
@@Luissv72 Oh yeah you're right haha. It's been a few years since I read them but that just makes his minor role even less prevalent.
Also. They explain that they don’t use guns because only the extremely rare metal, celestial bronze, is able to hurt mythical creatures
Luke in the movie: “my dads a jerk, I’ve never met him”
Luke in the play: “I met the guy once, and once was enough”
Even more evidence that TLT play is more accurate to the book
i forget, luke's dad was hermes right?
Nori Shimogawa yeah
It is kinda amazing how many plot holes or cliches the books avoided that the movie went purposefully full force in to!
Honestly, Nostalgia Critic should review the Lightning Thief book. It's clearly a book that a lot of people loved as a child.
Also, the author's son had ADHD and dyslexia and was insecure about it. So that's why he made all demigods have it.
But that line about "your heads programed for ancient Greek" is just insulting
Hmm, would you rescue your mother or your friend ? In reality I would never leave my mother back in hell

That’s actually not true. In the third book, a guy uses bronze bullets in his plane to kill an army of monsters. Also, in the first book of the second series, there is a shotgun that shoots bronze shells.
Yes
The reason they don’t use it more often cause celestial steel and imperial gold and stygian iron are hard to come by and it would be better to use it to create swords than bullets plus that guy is Annabeth’s father
@@ethancrash2554 Small correction: Celestial Bronze.

One of my big pet peeves is when Hollywood takes Greek mythology and turns it into Christianity lite
Wintermute01001 actually Christianity is Greek mythology blended together and mixed with some Asian & Indian bullshit & some bullshit the Jews made up and then the court on nycia decided what stayed in so the fact that there are parallels is to be expected
@@backupaccountforcooldaddyj7895 Please do try to explain how that makes any sense.
Justin Alicea Christianity is the bastard child of Judaism and Greek mythology along with some Asian & Indian influences because of trade.
Heck, that probably would annoy Byzantines (medieval Christian Greeks) too.
They knew how to keep Greek mythology and Christian theology separate. And when writing stories about pre-Christian Greek characters they didn't try to insert Christian doctrines into their beliefs.

Seeing how much NC hates Harry Potter it makes me want to see a Potter Month where he shits on all HP movies(Poor Tamara).
Victor Purificação I paid good money to progress in Hogwarts Mystery; he shits on Potter I shit on him.
i gave a more in-depth explanation to another comment, but to sum it up, look a little deeper at the character he is playing. it is actually a reversed compliment saying harry fails at being mediocre.
Cullen Latham still it would be cool to see his take on the movies and the new prequels, like a Wizarding Month
