The purple-crested turaco, formerly known as the purple-crested loerie, is an attractive arboreal bird of the turaco family.
Description
It is named for its deep purple crest. It has a metallic green mask, red eye rings, and a black bill. Its body plumage is bluish-purple, with crimson flight feathers, olive-green underparts, and a pinkish-orange wash on the breast. Sexes are similar, and juveniles have duller plumage.
Vocalizations: Call and song
The purple-crested turaco has a distinctive, ascending, croaking call, typically given at dawn and dusk.
Distribution and range
Purple-crested turacos are native to Africa. Their range extends from southern Kenya in East Africa to Kwazulu Natal in South Africa.
Habitat
They inhabit evergreen forests, moist woodlands, and savannah thickets.
Diet and feeding habits
Their diet comprises mainly fruit, but they also eat buds. Purple-crested turacos forage in the canopy.
Nesting and breeding
Purple-crested turacos nest high up in trees and shrubs. The flimsy, platform nest is made of sticks and twigs and is well-concealed amid vegetation.
Females lay two to three eggs and the incubation period lasts up to 23 days. Both males and females incubate the eggs. The nestlings begin to leave the nest at three weeks old and are able to fly within six weeks.
Status and conservation
Purple-crested turacos play an important role in seed germination and dispersal. The species has a large range. However, population numbers are declining.
Threats include habitat loss and trapping in some parts. The subspecies chlorochlamys is near-threatened within its range. Overall, the species is evaluated as “least concern” by the IUCN.
