An animal that is not happy will not play. Just look at the old type of zoo where animals would constantly pace, rock backwards and forwards or just cower in the corner. Those zoos and environments were indeed cruel, but we have come a long way. People play with their pets to make them happy, and the animal enjoys the interaction.
