    He shot the pumpkins pretty low near the bottom with the .357, where it is dense, but.45 was fired more in the center, where all the seeds are, and it's less dense.

    When considering a firearm or ammunition, I'm more interested in the energy imparted into the wound. It seems the .357 pumpkin holes would be a lot harder to close. I think penetration tests are interesting, and .357 generally penetrates more in other tests, but what is always apparent is the crazy amount of energy it brings to the target.

    My guess is that the .357 Magnum made larger entrance and exit holes and was stopped by less pumpkins than the .45 ACP because it was a flat nosed bullet compared to the round nosed bullet from the .45 ACP though it's higher velocities also likely contributed.

I remember a few years ago reading a FBI article about gun calibers and results on the human body, and .357 was right on top by the .44 Magnum. Hell, I have a Smith and Wesson M&P .22, which is a blast to shoot, I would even carry that gun...anything is better than nothing! Over-penetration is not something desired. If a human is on average 10" deep in soft tissue (center of mass) you want a cartridge that dumps all energy in 8" and does not penetrate much deeper; You know , like neighbors walls, bystanders or innocent randoms. Consider each pumpkin a human abdomen in a crowded defense situation, Does anyone want that much penetration?

      @@ckoncur The FBI. The reason is that humans are 10" deep in soft tissue if they are facing you and you hit center mass. But if they are broadside to you, and your bullet needs to penetrate a humerus before entering a chest cavity, penetration matters. Or if it has to pass through a barrier first (many gunfights involve cover). Or a car door. Not all perps obligingly face you to give you a head-on shot.

    • @stephenn6657
      @stephenn6657 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Rick C
      I think its a legitimate concern. Realistically you would want a round that dumps all its energy on impact. That and the bullet to expand creating a large wound channel. This is if your intent is to stop an attack. Lets not bullshit here. If you shoot, it better be to stop the attacker. I dont personally have a love affair with a perticular round. I see what works.

    • @rickc2102
      @rickc2102 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Frangibles are great for two reasons; if you hit your target, they dump 100% of their energy into it, and if you miss your target, the round will release its energy into the wall, rather than penetrate and become a threat to whomever might be on the other side.

As you can see on the data below, the differences are quite large. I'm not sure why the .357 stopped so quickly in this video, but like others pointed out, the bullets were flat at the end, while the 9MM and .45ACP were rounded.

    No bro. No. Different types of bullet designs. Same bullet stacked side by side the 357 magnum wins everytime. It has more velocity and smaller bullet diameter than the 45. Hence more penetration. The 357 magnum is the best 1 hitter quitter in combat caliber handguns. I personally traded my Glock 19 in on my 7 shot, 4 inch ported barrel 357 magnum. I have been shooting guns my entire life. Yes it comes down to what you can handle, are comfortable, and can shoot best but if you can shoot all 3 equal???? The 357 magnum reigns supreme. All 3 will work but the Magnum is King

      Usually it's the lighter projectiles with more speed that get the most penetration, especially if it's made by a respected ammo company. The heavier stuff may have more kinetic energy displacement force or whatever. I use federal HST 130 train nickel-plated hollow points for home defense though sometimes I worry about collateral damage. The basic grain of ammo I use commonly to target practice or just use it for whatever, ballistics testing, hunting sidearm is 158 grain JSP or SJHP. I'd love to get my hands on some 180 grain this week when I head up to the gun shop and see what they all about. Got a big day of ammo-testing and ballistics, damage etc coming up soon as we get a decent winter day with little wind and around 38

    In all of these comparisons, with different calibers, The one thing that always changes, is the style and barrel length of the gun. Folks will have different calibers, but shoot from different style guns. In this video, he went from round nose FMJ ammo to a flat nose .357. That makes a big difference as well. Longer barrel lengths add to the velocity of the rounds being fired, so if you don’t have the exact same length barrels for each caliber, and the exact same nosed bullet, you are pissing in the wind, and getting wet....
