    I was a U.S. Recon Marine in Iraq in 2007 and we were authorized to carry the M1911 .45 ACP sidearm, while Infantry Marines (for the most part) were restricted to the M9 9mm...on more than one occasion I saw the difference up close and personal when a big determined hopped up bad guy got into the same room as you...they could be shot center mass by more then one 9mm round and they would keep coming. But if they were shot center mass by the M1911, they dropped where they stood. Obviously a hollow point 9mm can have much better stopping power but those rounds are against the rules of war so we are talking standard full metal jacket ammo. I also found the slimmer grip of the 1911 to be much more comfortable for me than the Beretta M9/FS-92. My 2 cents anywho.

    To get a better understanding of which round penetrates concrete better you would need solid layers of concrete of various thicknesses. The 45 will punch through thicker individual layers than the 9 or 40. Very few rounds will punch through one layer of concrete and then have the shape, velocity , and energy to punch through a second layer. Maybe the Smith and Wesson 500? In your tests, the projectiles are to deformed after the first layer of concrete to punch through a second.

One does not get that much when putting down recalcitrant cinder blocks. It might not, but if I hit you in the shoulder with a .45, you are gonna go down, and will likely lose that arm because it will shatter bone! I do not need more rounds if I know the rounds I send hit their mark. I can handle more clips with less each. The hit each has is greater. As a test in ballistic gel would indicate. I just cannot switch from that. Gimmie a long barrel M1911 any day.

    It seems like if you need to get a bad guy through a hard barrier a fmj might be more effective due to it expanding through the hard barrier (assuming it penetrates and has enough energy left to do some damage to the bad guy).

    Might have been interesting to measure the diameter of the exit side of the hole, to assess how much cinder block was disrupted by each - or weigh the blocks before and after - same idea. I wonder about two other rounds - the vicious 7.62x25 fired out of a CZ-52 or other, and a .44 Magnum or even .357 Magnum. I would think that the issue in penetration would be retained velocity after passing through the first wall, and any of these 3 should have what it takes. But that's different from stopping power, which is probably related to the amount of energy delivered to the first wall - thus the interest in the diameter of the exit hole. I noticed that the 9mm cracked the block - but the .40 and .45 just bulldozed through it. I wonder if that's repeatable and a reflection of the 9mm's higher velocity (1190 vs 990 vs 835 f/s). And where's the .40 cal Waldo? Interesting video!

    What’s missing in the equation is the degree of impact. When looking at the 2nd cinder block wall one can see the degree of difference in the amount of force or impact on the surface of the 2nd cinder block wall. Look at the size of the circular percussion shadow of the .45 ACP. The distribution of percussion from the impact is visually much greater.

    • @MrDirtysteve75
      @MrDirtysteve75 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Best is subjective. The 45 had more mass and mushroomed therefore creating a larger wound channel. Recoil depends on the gun. I reload and cast 45, so it's actually cheaper to shoot than 9mm which I do.load but dont cast. I shoot both, I carry both, I'm more accurate with my 45. Put a big ass hole first time and follow up may not be needed. To each their own, but I would hardly call any of these 3 rounds the best.

      @@chucks2018 If measurements dictated the outcome of every conflict, all boxers that are 6'4 with a long reach would be unbeatable. We know, because this is the real world, that there is more to combat than measurements don't we....
      Having a 10mm 200gr round or a 10mm 135gr nosler round have completely different initial and terminal ballistics. Seeing a 10mm round leave the chamber at near rifle speeds might have a different impact (no pun intended) than the heavier, slower round eh? Especially on soft tissue where you don't want over-penetration of the target.

    If you ever get tired of the 9mm there's a cartridge called .960 Rowland from the same guy that invented the 460 Rowland. He can convert your 9mm to shoot the .960 Rowland which if I remember correctly and turns your 9mm into kind of a 357 for hunting semi auto

      There seems to be a few schools of thought, regarding capacity vs. stopping power. I've heard countless debates. I once asked a buddy, of mine, when he started carrying his M1911 and he said "After I got shot by a nine". He didn't like the 9mm stopping power. His brother chimed in with "if they'd shot you in the head, a 9mm would've worked just fine". Eventually, they agreed to disagree. :)

    The real test would be to measure the impact. We typically want the initial penetration and no exit with maximum stopping power. There’s where the difference will show up. Don’t know what kind of equipment would be needed to measure that though. Fun video all the same!

      @SealofPerfection 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only because it hit up near the top. The other two hits were a lot closer to the middle of the block. So the damage wasn't actually more. And look at the exit damage. 9mm was the least.
      I bet if the others had hit where the 9mm hit, the block might well be missing a huge chunk at the top.
