Any right that is limited is lost. Every sane citizen with a clean criminal record should be armed and trained by the state to be officers of public safety and national security as a public service. It is difficult, if not impossible, to oppress citizens or invade a nation where all are under the same law and no one has special immunities or privileges.

Welcome to Brazil. Where truth isn't hidden. And there are a lot of shootings. It's a law you must have a .380, or else the military will get involved to see if you can get the weapon. I once met a person that bought a .40 caliber pistol. Took about 1 and a half years to get it. I went to shoot both the .380 and the .40 caliber. I got the taste of what a Glock feels like in your hand. .40 was a Taurus PT 840 .380 was a Glock 25 or 27. I couldn't read what was on the side of the gun.

I love the simplicity of your testing. It puts things in perspective. Like will these rounds penetrate the car door or dry wall. How much damage it does going thru multiple pieces.
Not a surprising result to me. Bullet mass was close enough for decent comparison. A better bullet mass would have been 158 grain FMJ in both, and they'd have likely penetrated more sheets each, but with similar ratio of the .357 magnum penetrating just a little less than twice the number of sheets compared to the .38 special. Most .375 magnum commercial loads are about twice the muzzle energy compared to the .38 special with the same bullet. Note that the development history of the .357 and its original 158 grain ammunition during the mid-1930's was improving penetration of 1920's and 1930's car doors for law enforcement. Automobile sheet metal then was much thicker gauge mild steel compared to current vehicles that have much thinner steel from stiffer alloys. Penetrating the doors with .38 special with sufficient energy to seriously wound the person using it for cover was problematic. There was more than one layer of steel across most of the door, and it usually included the window glass with the window rolled down. Increasing numbers of gangsters were also starting to use ballistic vests. Even though those were crude by today's standards, they were also causing problems for the commonly used .38 special LE ammunition. Most of the gangsters wearing ballistic vests were undoubtedly protecting themselves more from other gangsters versus law enforcement. Absent any cover provided by objects like car doors, walls and doors, the .357 has a definite over penetration risk, even with a very good JHP. When using it one must consider what's behind the target, including common interior walls and hollow doors.

Not a great demonstration for defense unless you are being attacked by plates of sheet steel... but this backs up my conclusions that the 357 over-penetrates and the 38 special is the more ideal caliber for defense.

Edwin, be careful .. some guns here in Brazil shoots by itself or shoots whenever they want. lol . Run away from some brazilian pistols. About revolvers, they have problems too but it is not so dangerous as pistols. Great Videos!! looking forward to having more caliber comparisons. (.380 x .38...)

.357 give you a flash blind in the dark from a short barrel. Plus the flinch factor.. In my experience.
