Also, for the person or two who keep trying to repost the same goofy comment, anybody who cannot see that the paper is cut at the cylinder gap, please "rewind" the video and watch a few hundred times. :-) Of course, the muzzle blast has some effect on the paper, too, but the point is that the paper is cut back at the cylinder gap. You only need a beveled entry for the barrel, there's a russian revolver you could fire like this safely because it has that, it's also the only revolver that can be silenced.

You could never learn too much about firearms. Love watching this guy explain the simple things. Keeps me on my toes.
As one who has lined up side by side many times on a range firing revolvers I have felt some of the hot crap and gasses that came out of the shooters revolver to the side of me and so have several others I know. I’ve experienced this more than once. This is a good short, to the point explanation and video of a very important safety point concerning the use of a revolver.
If you re-watch this, it kinda looks like the bullet is hitting the paper causing it to go kabloomy. Idk tho, might be wrong.
@@SamD.Coffey if it was simply going through the front, all it would have probably done is left a bullet hole in the paper. Most of the damage done to the paper is almost certainly gas releasing, though you have a point that some of it may have been gas releasing from the end of the barrel.

I noticed when I shot my 357 6in Python at a relatively dark indoor range. 3 foot flame follows the bullet out of the barrel and 2 foot flame leaves perpendicular to the barrel out both sides of the cylinder. Really damn cool. Definitely something to see when shooting in the dark.

I still have an old pair of jeans with iron on patches around here somewhere because I tried the "Creedmore" position with my 6" Python. Fortunately no injury but I sure did hate having to explain to my wife why that pair of jeans needed to be patched that way.
I learned firearm safety from a retired army captain and my examiner was a retired police sergeant. These guys are just amazing. God bless them.

Never thought about how dangerous a revolver can be to a shooter. I was only aware about not putting thumbs on back of Glock else they can be hit so hard. Today I've learned something new and useful. Thank you!

@@edwardmoore5325 Just one woman's opinion but if you can pay a little more you can get a Ruger, Smith&Wesson or a Colt. There are now Colt's in production again though only a couple to choose from. I don't wish to offend Taurus owners but Taurus revolvers don't seem to be as well made.
Before long you will have paid more for the ammo you have fired than you will have paid for the handgun. You might as well shoot that expensive ammo out of a better revolver. Whatever you get, good luck to you and enjoy your revolver. Stay safe.🙂

You are the #1 firearms instructor on planet earth as far as I'm concerned. NOBODY teaches that, they all just focus on the target, whats beyond the target (not NEXT to the weapon itself!) or the weapon itself...never the fallout to your wife or kid who may be standing right next to you while you fire at an intruder or at the range...

Thank you so much for this video. I am retired police and now pastor a church. We do monthly shooting fellowships. For many of our guys they have had very little experience with revolvers but are getting into it. This is priceless training for those under 50.

nine years later so doubtful that you’ll see this, but it’s nice to see an expert both surprised, happy, and giving smart advice all t the sane time
Been there, and done that (45 years ago.). The wounds healed decades ago but the memory still makes me wince. I had been shooting auto-loading pistols exclusively for a couple of years when I decided to bring my Ruger Speed Six .357, which had been my main carry gun, on a camping trip and neglected to alter my grip. After that, I adopted a grip that was suitable for revolvers and auto-loaders. There are certain mistakes that anyone might make once but only a fool would do more than once.
I remember my brother-in-law wanted to shoot my Model 29 44 Magnum. I was shooting one handed and was trying to teach him how to. But he couldn't hit the targets so he wanted to shoot two hands. I showed him how to take his right hand to hold the grip and push forward and use his left hand to hold and pull back and he tried it but still what getting on the bullseye. So the next thing I saw him doing was holding the gun with his right hand and take his left hand and wrapping it around the cylinder and I said no no no no! Keep your hand away from the end of the cylinder and so he held his hand back and shot a round or two but he still wasn't on target well needless to say I wasn't watching close enough I mean he was 25 years old, but he eventually wrapped his hand back around the cylinder with his thumb right where the cylinder meets the barrel and when he pulled the trigger he started screaming and crying like a baby. The blast between the cylinder and Barrel split his thumb halfway between the nail and all the way to the end. Needless to say he never shot my 44 magnum again!

I've never shot a gun but want to . I'm going to purchase a firearm very soon as I'm saving up for one. It's suggested I learn with a Revolver so I really appreciate these types of channels. Mason: Though what you've stated isn't as true as it should be, for most people, it was for me. I remember, with a fond, warm heart the stories my grandfather told to me about the lessons he learned and liked to pass on. Lessons in physics and math, computational neuroscience and more, much more. I giggle almost uncontrollably when realizing that understanding our very human nature can be broken down to quantum mechanics and the laws of thermodynamics, an understanding made more deeply by the love and giving nature of my grandfather.

Excellent reminder Hicok45 & the demo really visually proves it.
This is 8 years ago and the video quality is still better than a facecam made in 2020.
This video has probably saved a few people from a world of hurt. Hickok45 is a good teacher to watch and he gives great advice on safe shooting.
I don't like gun regulations, but if somebody forced me to watch 10 seconds of this at the point of sale when buying a wheel gun, I guess that wouldn't be an entirely terrible idea. As a casual lifelong shooter I never knew this. (Guess stupid is as stupid does.)

As someone who's not a soldier and has an interest in guns, I like mechanics so guns have always been cool to me, and has only fored a couple times I already knew this and I was never taught it. Just kind of common sense for me.

Its not a reason not to buy a .38. You almost have to intentionally do it to place your hand there.Its a very unnatural hand position..people have been using revolvers for years and you dont hear about man fingers blown off from cylinder leak do you? Just dont cover the cylinder with your hand and youll be fine.

Just wow... THANK YOU. I recently purchased my 1st revolver and have yet to go to the range to practice... I am SO glad I checked this out before.
My Granduncle made that mistake once, he was shooting his revolver and he just let his hand slip a little too far forward when bringing his left hand up to the gun. The thing blew a gash through the side of his thumb and my dad had to drive him 60 miles hollering, cursing, and bleeding to the nearest hospital so they could sew the damn thing back together.

That's why the 357 magnum exists. Far more manageable and less likely to overpenetrate.
With practice you could probably do it. I'm a woman and I am comfortable with 44 mags(not short light ones). I'll admit that I won't shoot one for hours at a time as I do with 22LR or 38 special. When alone in bear and mountain lion country I am happy to have a 44 mag with me.

I wrapped my finger around a 22 revolver. I was shooting the semi-auto all day, then we loaded my buddies revolver and I wrapped my fingers around and shot. It hurt and I had fragments buried in my fingers. I thought it was just burnt tissue until it didn't go away and I had to take a needle to dig out the shards. Glad it was just a .22, but I Wish I would have watched this first!

I volunteered for that demonstration 40 years ago. I'm currently looking at and admiring the scar on my thumb. Emergency room removed most of the exploding round. Small parts of the brass would emerge over the years.
