As selfish as it sounds would I ever hate to see you get rid of everything. I love hearing you explain everything, that’s why I love watching you. A rare breed these days especially in this goofy ass world
That's a nice Ford, dear. Fix the whole thing stuff. Fix up a couple of the spots on the SA good that's a good runner and stuff. Dump, get some sheet and I'll fix them. Holes in pain over there and get detected. Go to work you know how to do it
Like you say helping to clear a few vehicles in good or your be over run in later year's Sorry the truck has developed a few problems but you will get it sorted, ready for next person.
We had some front discharge mixers with those same lift axles, and they did not turn when they were in reverse they would lift up when you put it in reverse and then they would track straight while going down the road and of course turn as the truck did
We have trailers with a similar setup here in the UK,I would know them as self tracking axles. As you say, they ‘steer’ when going forwards but lock in to reverse.
Like you said, the rear steer axle looks like a good choice for the cabover roll back 🙂👍 Sorry to hear about the electrical issues the truck developed J.C 😕 Hopefully you and Mrs. S had a great weekend none the less. Take care, be safe and happy wrenching 🔧🔩
Hope you can soon find a way to mentally put that Peterbuilt out of your mind. Hopefully you can hit the refresh button and move on to happier projects and thanks for taking us along. Tom
My hats off to you for your honesty with the buyer. There's so many guys out there who just say "as is. Not my problem." Love the videos my friend! I'm learning a lot from every one! Cheers!
Amazing that the range selector cost almost $1,000. Also too bad there’s some electrical gremlins at the last minute. However once those are solved it looks like a really great truck.
You two are honest people I was told a long time ago that good and honest people are rewarded in the end I also know that Peterbuilt project killed you and you still did the right thing God bless you two
I used to own dump trucks a long time ago and always loved the fords and internationals. The steel cabs did rust but they sure were comfortable and had lots of room. Ford even had a cabover in the 80’s that had an air ride cab with a bag on all four corners.
Re; lift axle function. The lock should automatically lock when you put the truck in reverse! A lift axle isn't happy trying to steer backing up. No matter if it is in the pusher position, or tag position. A steerable axle needs to automatically lift, or lock out steering in reverse.
Hey J. C. I went through a very similar issue, as it turned out the ground to the dash cluster went south. Drove me nuts for 2hrs. Best of luck, and btw I myself want a clear conscience also.
This is why I watch your channel your not out to make a buck off someone if it's not up to your standards you don't let it go until it is! Good work ethic JC!!
have to say you guys do great work I have learned plenty from you J.C. and how to do it right the first time, hope you can keep doing what your doing Chris from Cashmere
Hey JC, I believe that the solenoid supplies air to the chambers and locks the steering on the axle in reverse. That’s how we have them set up in Ontario Canada, because when you reverse with those steer axles they steer to one side and hang ya up.
@@j.c.smithprojects Yea, that’s just how they work over here… and most of our lift axle systems are computer controlled, so they also lock the steering over 60km/h. They also adjust bag pressure according to our on board scales., we aren’t aloud to have control over that.
i really hope you will video the parasitic draw i do a fair amount of it in my area but always like to follow along when others check them i seem to always pick up something helpful from each one i watch. most shops in my area send them to me they either say don't have time or just not good at it. i really enjoy doing it.
I know some of the older Volvos were known for ignition switch issues, with key off radio and blower fan would work, also when you’d turn ign switch off the brakes would do there self check instead of doing it when you turn the key on
International was good when they were like that red one and before that. When they went to that cab style they are the cheapest pis you can find around. I hope you get er figured out fast and easy.
Nice tag axle dont make them like that one now to much i fix refuse trucks rebuild steering lift axles alot. the steering lock chambers are there to kick out in reverse the electric valve may have been wired in wrong and the axle trun when driving forward most of the ones i deal with it is easier to hook them up to lift when the truck is put in reverse makes more sense on a front loader garage truck
Your wife did a good camera work. At least you left the frame longer so the next person can cut it shorter if they wish to do so. Lot of people just butcher things to pieces from random places on the frame. Hopefully the new owner will understand that it's not a new thing and needs attention.
Aint saying its the same on this one, but a leaky windshield down into the electrical wiring into the GEM Module caused all the same issues on my ford.
It sucks when stuff sits and the gremlins get it. I had a car in my shop years ago 20 plus years. I sold it to a couple and while getting it ready found a bad spot in the frame. Had the couple come back and told them it was unsafe and gave them their deposit back. They still wanted the car, I flat out said I can't its unsafe. Well my name was mud they told everyone that would listen that I screwed them somehow. My conscious was clear!
You could fixup trucks that we could follow along on use them for content then raffle them off i would spend goooooood money on a raffle for a nice 6 wheelrr dump or switch and go truck lol
I have a question for JC & CO…how do you keep rodents out of the engine compartment of all your stored vehicles?…thank you in advance to JC or anyone with some useful tips!
the most vulnerable part of the frame is from the rear hanger of the steer axle to the front hanger of the drive axle. there is support from each of the hangers on the drive axle. so it isnt as weak.
That stinks the hilltop energy truck is fighting so bad it seems like that junk always happens when your trying to recover I’m sure you will get it ironed out!
I really enjoy watching your videos I’m a mechanic for odot and completely understand what you’re dealing with between rust and electrical and the emissions changes that plague these newer ones. I have applied some of your suggestions to my daily work routine. Thanks again for putting these videos together!
James Pretty, who has a youtube site, just brought home an aeromax that will probably need some of those hood parts and fender extensions, You might want to contact him about it. Disclosure, I stand to gain nothing out of this, just trying to connect people who may have hard to locate parts to finish projects. Thanks, Bill
I am curious how you lost money in the Peterbuilt? It seems like you could call all the shots doing such great work. Unless you agreed on a firm price and went over budget?
It was a "helping out a friend" type of deal, I'm sure the friend didn't pay 1k a day that he could have made flipping trucks, as he was otherwise able to do in that time. Just speculating tho.
i dont build trucks for people because i cant charge enough to cover what i loose by not building and selling my own. this was a friends truck. it was never about making money. it just turned into a much longer and larger project than we planned.

Agreed. They work just the opposite way that J.C. Explains in the video. Lock up in reverse. They self steer going forward using the caster effect.

if they want in.....they will get in.

Why does the factory stop the double frame at the front leaf spring mount? Why doesn’t it continue to the rear leaf spring mount?
the most vulnerable part of the frame is from the rear hanger of the steer axle to the front hanger of the drive axle. there is support from each of the hangers on the drive axle. so it isnt as weak.

what engine took the place of the dt466 in the medium duty truck market?
I think it was the Cummins 6.7 diesel.
Maxiforce big piece of junk
