    Spray paint the hooks of your longer chains so you can tell them apart easily. A different color for different lengths.

    Glad to see the diy wrecker bed is back! I felt like I was on one of your adventures last week, bought a non running columbia with a high sleeper, too tall for our trailer. So to get it home I built a diy military style tow bar amd flat-towed it. Turned heads all the way home 😅

    I guess somewhere someone didn't check their cotter pins and something came loose and that's what they blamed it on, because our company will only allow us to use welded link chain assemblies. I have several foundry and sling hooks with clevlock ends and they allow that.

    Dear J.C. Smith projects family.
    👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). Again you made nearly everything look so easy. The Gradall (nearly a family member) 😁 was very helpful again. And so was the strong magnet drill.
    A big stash/hoard of trucks seems to fit you perfectly well. Not many people are able to say: I just bought a non running truck, so let's build a wrecker truck to haul it in. That's simply impressive! Congrats for having all those skills and the knowledge.
    I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video about towing "new" trucks in.
    As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health to all of you.

    In our heavy wrecker we put 1 inch steel plates behind it and get the front axle weight up to 12k or close to what the axle is rated for. Keeps the tedder todder to a mininium. Splitting the air bags on a tandem with a regulator is mind blowning as well.

    How did you get the means to buy all of these trucks? Any advice?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      like anything else in life....constant focus, hard work, determination, discipline and sacrifice. while all my friends and family were going out to dinner, going on vacations and buying new cars, i was investing in my future....TRUCKS. constantly searching for trucks, negotiating deals on trucks, fixing trucks and selling trucks...buying with only the cash i could "afford" to invest and risk. i have worked harder and longer than most others so that when i am older i wont have to work like most others. success rarely happens by accident. if you want it, you can do it. you just have to make it happen. i started by buying one old $3500. freightliner just a few short years ago.

  • @hollandduck79
    @hollandduck79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    wouldn't it be a good idea to buy a really good old heavy wrecker and make it completely to your liking?
    and of course not to sell it anymore.
    something like that red old Kenwood in the background but a real wrecker and then maybe with a sleeper cab for long distances too .
    thanks for the video J.C.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the cost is just too high for as little as i would use it. i like to keep a semi road tractor around. so a removeable 5th wheel wrecker unit will suit me fine. then i can put it on any truck that has a 5th wheel in just minutes.

    Love the use of the rubber bungees bolted down to keep the hooks in place.

  • @DependableAutoTruck
    @DependableAutoTruck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great video like the way you explain each step and why you do it the way you do. i am guessing the distance between the cab and bed is simply to keep front end down leverage.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. the way this bed is made requires a longer than normal cab to axle because of how far back the load is beyond the rear axle.

    Great stuff as useful . Just wondering why the chassis are so rusty is it the salt thay put on your roads

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it is from the MASSIVE amounts of salt they use on the winter roads.

      i cant give away that much money for such little effort. besides, that was the "quote" on towing. most times the "actual" price is much higher when they hand you the bill.

    So put you a 3/4 inch or 1 strip of flat plate down the top.of the frame between the bed amd the frame for extra clearance

    Got a question do you need a cdl in ohio.for just a personal use truck over 26k lbs. Not using commercially.or would it fall under the exemption rule.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "cdl"...COMMERCIAL drivers license. not required for anything regardless of the gvwr as long as you are "NOT IN COMMERCE".

  • @richardhuckaby5422
    @richardhuckaby5422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have watched all your videos but still dont know
    why cant you use one of your rollbacks or just tow flat on the ground or piggyback?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my big rollback deck is 52" off the ground....most of these trucks are over 10ft tall. cant be over 13ft 6 in tall.

    How about taking the old T600 KW and putting a zacklift on it and making it your wrecker

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont want to have a wrecker. i wont use it enough to justify the cost. a removable 5th wheel unit will suit me better.

    Extremely versatile,
    I was shocked that battery gun did so well. I use air but between brake jobs and tire changes I yank up to 30 pairs a day. That would never work .
