i think they moved the transfer case down in order to clear the hoist assembly when it was changed into a dump. this required the front driveshaft slip yoke to slide farther in and the rear driveshaft slip yoke to slide farther in too. i think this is how the rear driveshaft became an issue.
@@j.c.smithprojects😂 I was itching from the very beginning when it was 4x4 and SO clean. I'm a wrecker nut anyway, so was all about making it a wrecker. Re; Recovery Team, Fab Rats, MORR, Casey's Off Road Recovery, Merlins Old School Garage. Yep, I spend WAY too much time on TH-cam!
How do ppl not watch every minute of your videos ?? I will always vote wrecker ! I wish I was in a better position to buy it ! I have a 600 Holmes on an old Ford with a fuel tank where a tunnel box would be and has 100" cab to axle ! A newer hydraulic bed would be nicer but I have a love for the old ones too ! The old Ford needs alot to be road worthy and I just don't see it being worthwhile to fix it !
You’ve got a solid foundation that would be great for pretty much anything. Personally as a diesel mechanic myself I’d love to see a service truck setup with a crane. I learn a lot from seeing the different ways we all set up our trucks/tools
I had a 1994 F800 4wd that was converted at Marmon Herrington and got a four door extended custom cab. It hat the 8.3 Cummins with the 6 Speed manual transmission. It was a 8’ flat bed with a 4’ extension that pinned and bolted to the back. It was custom built for a guy pulling a large fifth wheel travel trailer.
I guess the question is how much right now? I like your videos with your Non nonsense attitude. I think that it would make a excellent short log truck. Thanks for your response.
Thank you both for sharing w/ us all. That is a great idea to move the axle back as far as U can, works for a wrecker or a dump bed. The drive shaft has to be reworked no matter what any way. If it sells as it is then on to the next project. Have a great weekend.
That truck has good "bones" and I would think being a factory 4WD conversion in that condition.....not easy to find. I would build it ....being able to fabricate and do the work yourself is a win win. Good luck.
Hi J.c. I Think you will be leaning more to the 10ft Dump truck .. You have the Dump bed in stock ...The last Dump truck you built was a stunner and ready for work from the get go ... Would be nice to see you build it ... stay safe oot there with your Other Half, You both make the Perfect Team ...
I always watch from start to finish, i thought it would make a great off road camper once i saw it with the dump bed off, but your last idea would be an awesome build
If memory serves, every hoist n body we installed back in the day frames were cut of either at the rear spring hangers or 9" beyond. Never did a bucket or other hydraulic cranes. Believe the Grove Super 10 body for the trunion was cut 7". Nice cab n chassis. Service body with a crane... but a dump would probably be more marketable? Or build yer own midrange rotator.... 🤔😂😎 but that'd probably be a too long drawn out process. Anyway, knowin you'll do it right. Thanks for sharing. Blessings 👍♥️🇺🇸
Heck, a mid range rotator would be easy! Find a Brodderson carrydeck crane. They tip them over all the time! Can pick them up cheap. (Yes, pun intended). Take unnecessary stuff off it, bolt on truck, done.
A 4x4 medium duty wrecker tow truck would be a pretty good idea. The truck is in great shape but that bed it had made absolutely no sense. Not only does it take weight off the steer axle but it also overloads the rear axle. As for a better milwaukee m18 fuel brushless drill you shouldn't have any problems finding 1 locally on marketplace, that's where I get my m18 tools from. But that's just my preference.
I like the way your mind works as hard as your body! As a retired (x3) Diesel tech- it would be nice to see a service body with a crane on that- but I'm sure you will do whatever is most profitable. Love your channel.
Great video J.C.Smith it will be a great platform for what you want to build whether it be a dump, service truck or a wrecker. It will be a good project for us to watch as it's built. Thanks for sharing stay safe Mr & Mrs J.C.Smith.
Yup.. I'm one of the nerds that make it to the end of all your videos.. I did comment before regarding a 07 Kodiak duramax C5500 to pull a 45 ft 17000 lb toy hauler (dry) but now you have possibly redirected my thinking to a crew cab international certainly with a DT466 the legend.. This would be purchased and owned by my son his wife and 2 boys 7 and 21 months.. So grandpa is sorta directing them (you get my drift) Safety, big breaks, all that! I would really appreciate your comments and suggestions.. Oh yea i have 2 boys that are painters but they are in Utah and I'm below yall in KY..
Moving the axle back as you suggested is beneficial for the drive line too. Making a new longer drive shaft to work with the new extended wheel base takes care of that vibration problem. For what it is worth of all the diesel truck engines I ever worked on over my career as a truck mechanic, my overall choice for reliability and service ability is the DT466. It impressed me over time as a good solid engine.
I have an ‘87 International 4WD that already has a utility bed on it. Definitely going to be a service truck. I already have the crane. The main problem is that I suspect that the 9-liter engine has a blown head gasket - not sure yet. Ideally, I would like to replace the horrible Nine with a mechanical DT466. The transmission is a 5-speed and there’s a pto-driven 20-ton Braden winch on the front. It has just over 60K miles on it and I have driven it quite a bit and it drives like a dream. No rust. Gotta get started on this one. I like what you’ve got there. Solid rims, unlike my Dayton wobblers. Looks like a solid truck. Can’t believe it had a salt spreader on it.
I like both the service and wrecker ideas. Why not a both, low profile wrecker body with a welder and compressor, tool storage and a boom and wheel lift.
A 4wd wrecker would be an awesome project. Looks to be a great platform to build off of especially being 4wd. I’d imagine it selling fast when you’re done with it.
Always watch to the end 👍👍, I like the idea of a four wheel drive wrecker with a plow …very handy and not that I’ve done very many axle moves , four to be exact but I always move the axle on a single axle as far back as I can , one because they handle better and two in our state it’s wheel base and the bridge rules for weight distribution and for the type of business I had the axle far back worked out very well. DT 466 was a great engine for me , the second engine I had great luck with was the L-10 300 HP. RR
Truck has good bones...good accessories ..and mileage has t worn it much...heavy duty , and sized for multiple apps... good save, and its life is kickstarted again...
Make it a wrecker service truck I was a mechanic in the Army drove the HMETT WRECKER that started my love for big diesel mechanic trucks I would love to see you build one love your videos.
If you have the wrecker bed then id say build it. If not you say you already have the dump bed. Be more productive and profit to do it that way . But if you do buold a wrecker that would make a heck of a build. Some fresh paint and graphics and a ton of loghts be a awesome addition!!
Dear J.C. Smith projects couple. 👍👌👏 This is definitely a nice and very sturdy truck. I can assure you, that I will watch whatever you decide to do with it (and of course I watch every of your always interesting videos till the end!). But because you asked, here is my personal opinion: For me the main and definitely more important question is not what is best for the truck. It is what is best for you two! Fact is: You have lots and lots of trucks and stuff in storage = actually you obviously don't need more work but less trucks and more money (for instance for your several ongoing projects). If this truck doesn't sell the way it is, I suggest that you go the easiest way AND use things you already own. Putting your 10ft dump bed on the truck AND the snow plow back on the front, would make a great "winter vehicle". Additionally you get rid of stuff "laying around" and get payed for it. 2) I'm definitely too far away to decide about the condition of the cab paint. But I wouldn't paint it as long as the condition of the green is somehow okay. In the snow a green cab is definitely better visible than a white one. Additionally: I simply love nearly anything that is green and I never ever want to own a white vehicle again. 3) Of course I'm with you, that a 12ft dump bed or service bed or a wrecker modification would certainly look better on this truck than a 10ft dump bed. And then there would be no need for cutting off the end of the sturdy frame. But you would need to buy a 12ft bed or a service bed with a crane or a wrecker contraption. And this brings me straight back to the beginning of my comment: Please do what is best for you = sell/get rid of stuff without working even harder than you two already do. By the way: Unfortunately we all don't get younger, sigh. Please don't get me wrong: I would love to see this truck getting the complete and typical high quality Smith projects working over. But it mustn't be especially this one, you have more than enough trucks left for me to watch. I hope you allow me to say that I would even be very proud to see that you can do what I seem not being able to do = etting rid of stuff! As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all of you.
some times i just like to build something because i want to. i think the wrecker option is just that. i have a 10 ft dump and 2 wrecker beds. i would be getting rid of one or the other. i lean toward the wrecker option mostly because the truck is 4wd and that adds weight to the mid and front of the truck. that is where a wrecker could use the weight. the extra weight takes away from the load capacity of a dump. so instead of hauling 8 tones legally, it can only haul 6 tons. the wrecker will require a fair bit of fabrication and welding. that is what i really enjoy. the dump bed would be less time, have a larger market of buyers and a good profit margin. the service body with a crane would be about the same amount of work, have a smaller market and make great margin (even though i would have to find the service body and crane). the wrecker would be the most interesting to me because there is so much to figure out and plan for.

If you are going to take the truck apart to clean it up and paint it, I would find a '60s IH Loadstar cab and front clip to put on the truck. Since the frame is long, it would also make a great wheel lift wrecker with a boom on the top!

I can definitely see a 4x4 wrecker being attractive. I personally like the idea of the service truck but like you said the snow plow doesn’t become a selling feature on a service truck
The ploughs I work on are dbl framed. Probably because they are under constant torque from the front blade and the box. But 4x4 is the cats ass. I haven’t seen one in our vast fleet. Slam a service box on it and sell it. Mechanic service truck for equipment job site no problem
JC. Like the idea of it being a wrecker seems like it could be a very cool truck. and the fact that it is a four-wheel-drive and may be put a 10 speed in it thanks for your cool videos.
Love watching your projects beginning to end I really would like to see more of the Topkick GMC trucks. I fell in love with the red one. It was awesome with a nice wheels on it.
mine would be different than what you might be thinking. mine would be to recover something and tow it down the road as well. so it has to be short enough to get into tight spots but long enough to handle the weight of towing
i think they moved the transfer case down in order to clear the hoist assembly when it was changed into a dump. this required the front driveshaft slip yoke to slide farther in and the rear driveshaft slip yoke to slide farther in too. i think this is how the rear driveshaft became an issue.
I like the service body idea, but I really like what you addressed at the end of the vid! 👌

perfect rig for those backwoods recoveries. i have some specific items in mind to make it a little more suited.

You are welcome. You put out a nice video.. Why not watch all of the video?
It would make a good medium duty wrecker

Tow truck will be very cool. Thanks for the video .

Love that last idea!!!!!
Make it a servicetruck, that would be interresting, greetings from Belgium
Nice truck brother. That seems like you can build a nice dump truck
I have not see many dump trucks with 4x4, but service truck or wrecker would be nice. Mind you I am a field mechanic, bit biased on that.

if i was to build it as a service truck, i would remove the plow and put it on something else.
Wrecker or a service body both are cool ideas
Sounds like a very nice service truck for your fleet
Service trk would b nice a guy that goes off road to service equipment . But a city type 10'' dump box makes sense with the snowplow.
The ploughs I work on are dbl framed. Probably because they are under constant torque from the front blade and the box. But 4x4 is the cats ass. I haven’t seen one in our vast fleet. Slam a service box on it and sell it. Mechanic service truck for equipment job site no problem
JC. Like the idea of it being a wrecker seems like it could be a very cool truck. and the fact that it is a four-wheel-drive and may be put a 10 speed in it thanks for your cool videos.
hello greg......DI........AZZZZZZ. how have you been?
Love watching your projects beginning to end I really would like to see more of the Topkick GMC trucks. I fell in love with the red one. It was awesome with a nice wheels on it.
those are the trucks i want to work on the least.
That black Chevy pick-up in the background looks interesting.
85 c10 that i ls swapped for someone.
Damn I was wanting a service bed on it! It’s a very attractive truck for that.
my budie made a 4x4 wrecker from a telephone drill truck came out nice
made it to the end. service truck or tow truck would be nice for this one.
Wrecker would be something you could really use and would be easy to sell as well!
I vote for the wrecker that would be cool to see.
That's ok and thankyou
Been watching a lot of off road you tubers building wreckers. Would really like to see you build one.
mine would be different than what you might be thinking. mine would be to recover something and tow it down the road as well. so it has to be short enough to get into tight spots but long enough to handle the weight of towing
