    My last kitty died at 20ish! He was a classic case of kidney failure. I offered him anything to eat. He was not interested in food. I got to hold him when he slipped away. I called the greatest mobile vet ever! A message to your viewers...do not ever think your kitty needs to go to rest in a cold clinical setting.

    Thank you so much for a great video When! When we give a cat a good home, it's our responsibility to give them good food but at the same time something they find tasty. When senior cats start to lose their appetite, please get them to a veterinarian right away for bloodwork and possibly other tests. All cats deserve the best care possible.

    My mackerel tabby, The Claw, eats dry food fine, but will only eat Sheba cuts for wet food. Not Sheba pate, mind you, but Sheba CUTS! Her weight is perfect and I don't see her as having much in the way of fat reserves if I give her other wet foods that she won't eat. Some feel that cats that won't eat what they're given are "spoiled," but it's really a facet of their nature in that they would have control of their diets in the wild by hunting what they like to eat. So since I've removed the joy of hunting by keeping her in the house I give her what she likes to make up for that, even if pandemic supply chain issues mean I have to drive to a few stores.

    Sometimes you need to do things to stimulate their appetite, like add Whiskas replacement milk or goat’s milk for cats to their diets. If you are going to give them treats, make sure they are treats that will somehow benefit their health, like additional hydration, omega 3 etc. I have heard of coconut oil but I have not yet tried it. One of the treats I regularly give my cat is a tube treat called Churu. This treat has rave reviews and is available everywhere.

    • @itskashkashi

      Churu tubes are the only treat my cat will eat, specifically the chicken and cheese flavour. No other kind of treat has had his interest but he gets excited when he hears the tubes rip lol. I think it's because it's wet. He's always drank a lot of water for a cat (to the point I had an organ function test done because I was worried about his kidney function- he's fine). But yeah, churu lockables are great!

    I am a Hospice Nurse, and my hours very greatly because I never know when I will get called to see my patients after hours. I try to keep my 2 cats on a kind of regular basis. I give them a can when I wake up. and one in the evening. My cats love seafood flavors, but they don't like the same flavor twice in a row. So I mix it up. I also give them dry food to eat. On occasion I strike out and come home to a Plat of untouched food. So I throw it out and try something else.
    On occasion, they will eat all the food in a few minutes so I feed them a 3rd time.
    Just an update on my Kramer, who was sick with liver disease. He seems to have recovered. No Jaundice, he's eating well and gaining weight. I do however give him low dose Prednisone to keep any inflammation at bay and it does help his appetite. Also, at night he gets KMR for the calories. He is still thin, but not skin and bones.

    One cat was a tuna cat the other a chicken cat. Ne'er the two to meet! Fortunately tuna is cheaper than cat food! (I did mix fish cat food with his tuna so he got his taurine and other vitamins) I now have a gravy cat! Licks up the gravy but refuses to eat the solid parts. Have not found a solution to that yet!

      When I first started switching my cat over to wet food she did the same thing. She just licked the gravy and refused to eat the solid parts also. Now she will eat an entire can per day of fancy feast but she has to be hungry enough, at least 12 hours since she had anything. I had her on Fancy Feast grilled turkey as well as chicken before switching her to Wellness Core Hearty Cuts (Wellness Core is supposed to be healthier than Fancy Feast). Wellness Core has better quality ingredients and nutrition but it’s recall history sucks! It is ranked as a 4/10. There were several recalls, including the most recent one in 2017. The other thing is my cat usually will only eat the food when I first open the can. Wellness Core doesn’t offer those mini-cans.

    • @glasslinger
      @glasslinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liveyouryoga The wet food definitely is best for the cat. Find one that she likes and be sure that is mostly what she eats. Small amounts of dry treats are not going to hurt the cat so long as most of her food is wet. Vets that are profiting from dry food "sell out" cats by saying it is OK. God didn't put cat pellets on this planet for cats to eat! Think about it and look for the cash flow!

    I can’t stress enough just how necessary a good vet is! I finally succumbed to the vet’s suggestion that I feed wet food (hate the studs, it’s messy and stinks, and is wasteful). My cats were sisters, and one of them was fine. The other wasn’t. But, because she was a cat, she hid it from me that she was not eating at all. She was less than 24 hours from death by the time I got her to a vet. When I spoke with the original vet she had zero suggestions other than the stew or pate idea, and referred me to a university web site for information that was not remotely relevant to the problem. Her offhand attitude led us to the scariest week ever. Both cats ate kibble for the rest of their lives, and everyone was happy. Your info is great, and you do say that they will eat rather than die. BUT they don’t know that and I’m sure many do what mine did and leave it too long.

    • @liveyouryoga
      @liveyouryoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that it is messy, and some brands smell bad and are wasteful. Tikki Cat after dark line is the exception to this. It resembles and smells a lot like human food. Are you a vegan? If you are then of course it does not matter what brand of cat food you feed your kitties. As far as wasteful goes, my cat would eat 1/4 of a can when first opened and then reject all leftovers, whether I heated up the refrigerated food or not. Sorry about your loss of your fur babies.

    • @liveyouryoga
      @liveyouryoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My vet in the 90’s for my Persian kitty was telling me I was feeding her the wrong food. It was the opposite. He said she should be eating dry food as it was healthier and better for her teeth (she ended up losing them anyway). The dry food made her very constipated. In the 90’s the pet food industry produced a lot of garbage food. It wasnt until there were numerous recalls that many pet food companies changes their tune.
      When your cat is close to dying forget the prescription diet that vets recommend. They do not extend their lifespans. If I could do it all over again, I would give them whatever they wanted.

    Food temperature and freshness are another consideration. My cat tends to only eat food directly from the can when I first open it. She usually doesn’t eat very much of leftover canned cat food whether I heat up the food or not, so in that case I only give her a little bit at a time and let the food come to room temperature. Some cats I have met don’t care if the food is cold as long as it mimics the texture they would get in the wild. Other cats want you to heat up their food as it brings out the smells and flavours more.
    If you choose to heat up your cat’s food, how do you do it? Do you put it in the microwave for a few seconds? We don’t have room for a microwave and so I was putting her kitten sized stainless steel bowl inside a bigger stainless steel bowl filled with 1/4 boiled water and then placed a saucer over top and timed it for 20 minutes. I timed it for 40 minutes (changing the water at the halfway point) when I was adding bone broth, as I usually put the bone broth into ice cube trays (that make really small ice cubes- I added 2 of them). Sometimes my cat went for the food with added bone broth and sometimes she didn’t.

    I was looking up this video specifically because one of our 4 guys had another one of his "I refuse to eat this, open another can!" moments, 5 times in a row just now. He is a VERY picky eater, and even though we have a wide selection of premium foods ( high protein, no filler, etc ), one of his favorite brands is Purina Gourmet Gold, which is by all standards, junk. But sometimes it is the only thing he will eat. Like today. He also likes freshly cut Beef ( raw ), that he gets in the evening, but he would refuse it, if I served it twice a day. It really is quite the work to get him to eat sometimes, but I try to coax him to eat at least once a big meal, with smaller meals during the rest of the day.
    Our other cats are easier ( for the most part) - our oldest will eat anything and everything ( I always keep him away from the picky eater, so he can eat in peace and not be overwhelmed by the old guzzler ), our youngest does not like wet food at all, he is on a diet of kibble, beef and treats and our only female is also a picky eater ( but less so) but she doesn't eat a lot either way. She has a very specific taste, and will only ever eat like 10% of a can/portion. Sometimes, I wish it were easier with our feline family members, but that's just the way it is.

Sometimes I spill corn on the floor when draining the juice. You should see them scramble to gobble it up. Rice plain white rice they eat it. If I cut a watermelon my boots is always licking it as soon as I cut it.
    My cats have gotten so fat and fluffy after surgery and they eat less. They can’t even do their matrix dives through the air when chasing the fishing pole lure toy. I feel bad. I notice the ones that have gained the most wheeze snort and grunt more. I can’t take them to the track. What do I do? Also noticed that their litter has changed. Instead of fish stick shaped it has became more like a bunch of big M&Ms. It was never like this before. Could they be stopped up?
    Maybe stress? We have had a busy past month from being sick and had no choice but to neglect them slightly. Neglected on affection not food. Was moving and taking things out of the house. Company from out of town and three household members that have disappeared. Disappeared from the cat’s reasoning I guess. If they even notice. I’d think they would. They weren’t close to the cats though. My big cats could care less about the house cat politics and cuisine pickiness. Steak ground round chicken scratch my chin leave me be.

    I wouldn't describe my two boys as finicky, but they clearly have preferences. For example, Orri likes beef/lamb and Frannington likes fish/prawns.
    If you put something down that they don't want, they're really good about communicating it: flicky paws, tail down , whiskers back and investigating what the other cat has.
    I pay attention to this, not only for their health/happiness but also because it's stupid to waste money on food that they won't eat.
    One last note: If they are unwell or just feeling low, our go-to is plain baked chicken thighs or rump steak served at body temperature. Irresistable to any cat I've ever known, and the massive protein kick that they need.

    What about food texture? Pate, shredded meat or purée? It doesn’t matter how nice the food is if it is the wrong texture. Since cats are finicky as well as fickle, this can change also. Tikki Cats After Dark line is all shredded meat, and smells really really good. Initially, my cat was going for it until she became tired of shredded meat.

    Something that wasn't covered here, allergies and GI problems. We adopted a cat and he was perpetually grooming and scratching and barely ate. Our vet suggested that we change protein source after not finding any parasitic causes. He was previously fed food made from chicken. After two months of switching to a fish only diet, both dry and wet food, he is now eating regularly and not over-grooming and scratching. His bald patches are also starting to disappear. So, one possibility is that your cat might have allergies to certain food sources which causes discomfort after eating and might result in your cat not wanting to eat. Please check the ingredients of your cat food carefully, some cat food are labelled as seafood but are actually made of chicken with seafood flavouring added in. Hope that this helps someone.

      Some dry food is made from CORN with fish flavor added, if you can imagine such an insult! Purina has a whole range of cat foods from the absolute worst to some fairly good. Gotta keep an eye on the first three ingredients of the ingredient list.

    • @liveyouryoga
      @liveyouryoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glasslinger That too. I had mentioned that to someone else on here and that is why I won’t feed my cat Meow Mix dry. Corn and food colouring and a lot of other junk. Basically I buy my cat food from pet food stores in my neighbourhood but I also shop online if certain brands are not available.
      Besides, I can afford to pay more for cat food. I do pay attention to the first three ingredients.

      @liveyouryoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glasslinger Purina has a somewhat high recall history but Fancy Feast (by Purina) has not and they have been around since 1982. They don’t have the best ingredients: turkey, turkey broth and wheat gluten but as a temporary measure it is better than giving her an all dry food diet. I use it as a stop gap while transitioning between dry to wet foods. She gets a can of fancy feast per day plus a tablespoon of higher quality canned cat foods. If that fails, I give her Churu.

    • @liveyouryoga
      @liveyouryoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I like about Fancy Feast is if I allow her to eat the entire can (and not worry so much about how long it takes her), her urinary tract health is a lot better. I usually only leave it out for no more than 3-4 hours. With limited ingredient diets like “Instinct” and “Pure Vita” and “1st Choice” and even “Stella and Chewy’s freeze dried (after rehydrating) “ can only be left out for about 90 minutes to 2 hours. This time of the year it is no longer hot and we don’t have the heater on yet, so that in between season is safer for cat foods. In the summer I am much more cautious. In the winter ❄️ you also have to be a little more careful because when the heat comes on, this also increases the temperature in the room.

    My husband feeds 18 cats twice a day every day of his life. (We look after rescues).
    Some cats like to eat all (of their intended intake) in one go, others are grazers throughout the day.
    What makes the most sense for our household with that many cats-
    wet food goes down twice a day, and dry in the bowls 24/7.
    It’s difficult to know if the cat’s needs are being met, adequately, everyday.
    But he tries. It’s his life.

    I give her a couple treats in the morning now because she is used to the routine. I stopped with the wet food and I leave dry food in her bowl with fresh water everyday. If she doesn’t eat it, that’s on her. It’ll still be there the next day. Eventually she got used to it, and knows the routine. That’s it.

We've tried almost every one we could find. We tried many types, flavors and brands of dry and wet foods as well. We finally found Friskies Salmon wet food. Not the greatest food but at least she will eat it. She will sometimes eat salmon flavor, other brands but not always. And fortunately she shows absolutely no interest in people food.

    I no longer recommend kibbles for my cats. I found out that the 'kibble' has 3x the carbohydrates of their maximum daily requirements. I thought it would be too cumbersome to make a fresh batch from meats, preferably dark chicken. I measure out 4 parts chicken, 3 parts rice, 2 parts sweet potato or carrots, with oil. The rice treats urinary tract infection. They now drink less water because water is retained in the freshness. They love it, nothing like fresh food! I still buy kibble and add a little to their rations to add crunch. Take care. WWG1WGA!!!🇺🇸🇳🇫🇺🇸

      Yes, and she may never completely transition over to wet food and this is fine. I used to feed her in the wrong size cat bowl. I was feeding her from bowls that were way too big and more appropriate for water only (they were given to me) and so she was getting quite a lot of dry food. I purchased kitten sized bowls that fit inside a silicone mould and she only gets 1/2 a bowl of kibble. This lasts her throughout the day, and then I give her canned food of some sort. I have purchased many many types of premium limited ingredient and expensive diets but I have also purchased cheaper brands like Fancy Feast in the gravies. I stay away from cat foods which have had poor recall histories and have questionable first 3 ingredients. I also give her the Churu tube treats for even more hydration. She is a very good drinker.
