    This video is excellent. I’ll share what I learned. Some wet foods are made to be addicting, salt or flavorings. My cat stopped eating in the middle of a transition, addiction was the problem. The existing food was upsetting her digestive tract. Eating both dry and wet, I stopped the wet food for a month. The pet shop suggested highly digestible and start with best sellers, =cats are liking them. She was right! With the old food out of the way, started with treat size. Every day same. Don’t try another till the can is exhausted because my cat started eating the new when I got a little over half a can in. I slowly added more each day. It was the pet stores #1 seller, agreed with her digestive tract. I was already measuring the dry I put out and take it up before offering wet. If you don’t offer both dry and wet, Goat milk powder might help. It’s a safe healthy flavoring cats supposedly love. It’s a highly digestible probiotic I bought a packet but never had to use it. Some kitten food has milk which kittens can tolerate but adults have to have lactose free. The goat milk powder might help that kind of transition because the milk taste is what they’re looking for.

    It took forever to get my older cat to eat wet food. Her previous owners only gave her kibble for the first 12 years of her life, so she developed a preference for it. Then I got her. It's been 8 years and she'll only eat finely ground pate and even then, not much of it. Luckily, she'll eat any kind of food that isn't wet, so I replaced her kibble with freeze-dried raw. She'll eat it if I don't rehydrate it. Thankfully, she drinks a lot of water. With my younger cats, I started giving them wet food early on and added in freeze-dried and frozen raw.

      Jennie, she's 20? Beautiful! I've got a 21yr old who was neglected for 17yrs, but, also used to dry food only.
      May I make a suggestion, if she starts to give you trouble again about wanting dry?
      Maybe take a look at "Young Again" brand cat food. (They have amazing success with CKD cats, for which I was very surprised since it's only dry food)
      I was concerned with hydration, as you are, so I contacted the company. I realize you didn't say your girl had kidney issues, but sooner or later especially at this age there's a good chance it's going to happen. We were just told Bella is in the 1st stages. I was going to take her off Young Again so I cancelled my order. Since I'd been using YA for many years, I felt they deserved to know why.
      Their president was kind enough to email me with some interesting information.
      He wrote (paraphrasing a bit)
      [Wet food will not help your cat maintain improved hydration over YA dry food. The higher the starch content of any diet, wet or dry the less hydrated your cat will be.
      I would recommend our LID Zero Mature Health; this diet has less that 1% starch and will therefore not reduce hydration in your cat.
      Kidney cats already drink an excess of water and are unable to absorb it. Once they can’t absorb what they drink it will make no difference whether they are on a no starch canned food or our food. Both would have no starch and the hydration as related to wet food would be the same.
      The most important consideration is the phosphorus content of the food.
      Most all canned foods are very high in phosphorus. Our LID is low in phosphorus and 100% of the protein is hydrolyzed.
      Our foods also have nucleotides and these can be a great help.
      This is a great diet for your cat and she will do well if you continue on the LID]
      Anyway, I know this was long ... but I was relieved & surprised to know that we aren't harming our cats with a dry food if done the right way. Though I believe a diet like what you're giving your girl is an excellent diet, I thought it would be helpful to know there's an option if she gets finicky again, like mine have.😻

      @@CaseysJonesMom Thanks for the info. It makes sense. She was just diagnosed with very early stage kidney disease, so I've been looking around. I found Weruva Wx wet food and just received an order today, so I'll see if she likes it. She didn't like the kidney food from the vet, which is fine with me because I didn't like the ingredients. For the past 5 years or so, the kibble I've been giving her is Dr. Elsey's. It's extremely low in carbs but the phosphorous isn't particularly low, so I'll look into the one you mentioned.

    Very good exposition on a challenging issue! I have very similar approach and it will work with patience. The reserve of preferred foods is a very important piece of advice that I hope people follow.
    My cats at mostly wet food now (mainly because they are poor water drinkers) but I still give them a very small amount of kibble as a mid-day snack. This is so that they will chew and use their teeth instead of just lapping up mush. I have had to change their kibble multiple times and what I found is that mixing the new introduction into the storage bin of the preferred one several days in advance of the introduction made it much easier. I have my mother's old tupperware container she used to store flour and it is perfect for their crunchies. This gave enough time for all of the scents to combine and the new food wasn't seen as strange. I have auto-feeders that dispense 1-2 grams, and the tanks on those are enough for a couple of weeks. This is plenty of time for the new food to smell more like what they are used to. Hope this is also helpful.

      Yes, I do the same. For kibble, I give it to them at night and prefer Hill's Dental Kibble because it is large and they are forced to chew it. Thanks for your comment.

It went fairly smoothly. We’re currently rotating between 3 brands of wet food and expanding our research to learn more about homemade (just in case). We’re also buying a little extra each week to keep a larger supply on hand. And we offer a high quality dry kibble too - just in case. Happy thanksgiving, Fransisco (hope I spelled it correctly). ❤

      Same happened with my cats dry food. I got very lucky she took to a suggested replacement right away. They said pick the highest protein, cats are attracted to protein. It helps to know if you’re truly stuck, what you can get away with. The shelters don’t have time to mess with a healthy cat being picky. By the 3rd day they usually cave and start eating. Why we’re not supposed go that route is the cat being stubborn is not doing itself any favors with the liver and kidneys. Stray cats will eat anything put out. If they get hungry enough they’ll eat. What’s impossible is we’re not wired to let that happen and it’s better for the cat to transition. Eat or starve is a last resort. It’s happened to animals and humans alike, circumstances can force them or us to eat what we can get.

    I have a question about cats really addicted to a particular food. My cat was on Wellness signature selects and morsels but then started to refuse other foods previously enjoyed. I ended up getting her off the brand after she started refusing healthier options. She's back eating now but not as much as previous. It's wild how they can go wild over a perticular food and want nothing but that. The detox is a procress. She was offered old favorites which she denied for 2 days. I finally ended up offering a small taste on a spoon before she came back around and understanding that Wellness brand foods is off the menu.

    Currently dealing with the no longer available situation unexpectedly and not sure what to do. They'd been eating raw (Smalls) primarily with occasional packets of wet (Feline Natural) and were losing interest in kibble, so I was phasing that out finally. I've tried replacing the raw while it's not available with a different raw brand (neither of them seemed to like that) and now with cans of the wet I'd been giving them. One cat seems to be dealing fine (while obviously not as enthusiastic as the food I'm currently trying), but the other is just not going for it (she'll nibble a bit, but not much). Should I try switching to a different brand? Is it possible that there's something about the packets of wet food that was different from the cans? I don't know how to proceed, because the insight I seem to be finding is all centered around slow transitioning, which isn't an option.

It weight was of 1kg weight and on the 1st day, I gave him a lil bit of beef and dry cat food that I borrowed from one of my friend and it ate it without any problem and it kept eating cat food that I bought from the store for the 1st 3 days. Now it won't eat anything besides chicken meat or eggs that I gave him during eating my breakfast or dinner. It starves itself but still won't eat cat food and keeps meowing to me for food. She plays normally, isn’t lethargic, and drinks and eats well. The only thing is, she occasionally has these soft/runny stool. its not everytime she poops but it does happen. She poops after each meal and usually one is soft/runny. Yesterday her stool was completely normal, but today is was softer and more wet. i wanted to maybe try pumpkin since its high in fiber but i’m not sure it’ll work. I just started a new job so im not sure if i’ll be able to afford medication for her, please help

      I am not sure what you can do until you get more of her preferred food, but she must eat something or can get seriously sick. 3 days is too long not to eat anything for a cat. Have you tried human baby food? Something simple like puree of chicken. Eating just a little can avoid serious illness until you get the cat food. Any human food that she has shown an interest in, like cold cuts, is okay too. Just get a little food into her.

    I think #4 "dry to wet is harder" is incorrect insofar as he explained it. Maybe he meant for digestive disagreement reasons. At least in the case of cat preference: Cats that are used to both dry (kibble) and wet (canned catfood) will always prefer to eat the wet food. Trying to transition cats from wet only to dry only will be a nightmare.

    • @9LivesToLive
      @9LivesToLive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe it depends on the cat, but most cats are used to dry treats. They are not used to wet treats if they eat dry. That's why that transition is generally harder. But there are always exceptions. Thanks for your comment!

    • @9LivesToLive
      @9LivesToLive  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it happens soon after eating, I think the fast eating is the problem. It is regurgitation of undigested food that has not yet reached the stomach. I suggest two things. If you have more than one cat, feed them in separate rooms, or at least where they cannot see each other. The fast eating might be fear of having their food eaten by the other cat. The other thing I suggest is raising the cat's food dish off the floor by about two inches. This will help the food travel to the stomach horizontally rather than uphill, and will help prevent backup which leads to regurgitation.

      You could also try a slow feeder or a puzzle toy. There are ones for dry or wet food that you can buy (look at dog ones, too) but you can also do things like toss kibble one at a time for the cat to chase or spread wet cat food in a thin layer over a plate. Basically anything that slows down their eating. These have helped my cat who regurgitates easily, although not eliminated it completely.
