It spins whenever the clutch cage is spinning. The kickstarter gear moves in to contact it when the kick lever is actuated. That action spins the idler which is in contact with the clutch basket gear. The idler is always in contact with the clutch gear.
@@tcvan-nm2fx Aha, I misunderstood what you were saying. According to the parts diagram it IS supposed to be on the outside of the idler gear behind the circlip.
Hey Jack, on the 73 CT3 and the AT’s there is no washer/spacer behind the idler gear. You didn’t by chance put a washer on the kick start shaft then install it did you? Did you try the other kick starter you have?
just watched a video of putting a washer behind the gear and a washer in front of the gear then the circlip.🙂
That was my plan, I just wanted to see if I was maybe missing something. I hate taking things apart after I've buttoned everything up. Thanks James.
Not sure. But I think it needs the shim. Good luck brother
You're absolutely right Cain.
Also I'm assuming starter is fully seated, probably a dumb question
Checked it several times.
I sent you an email with a picture of the transmission. There is a shin before and after .
Thanks Marcel. I replied to your email.
Put the washer behind the idler gear and check the wear pattern on the clutch basket.I think the spacer needs to go behind the idler gear.
I don't believe the gear should be spinning next to the clip when the engine is running, assuming the clip does not spin.

@@oldguysoldbikes Yes, that is why I believe the washer should be on the clip side, don't want a spinning gear next to the clip without a washer.

I'd recommend reaching out to Dale Sweger, he's had many of those apart and probably knows off the top of his head

No. Actually I pulled it out and checked to see if there was something I could remove to make it go in further. No luck. Thanks Don.
hi, jack!
Hey brother
bet the parts book is wrong! wouldn't be the first time that has happened, remember somebody had to draw the diagram.
I kind of assumed that may be the case, but you know about assume I bet. It sometimes makes an ASS out of U and ME.
think i would assemble the engine make sure the clutch basket turns and call it a day.
