Well, ladies and gentlemen what can I say. I took this up as a hobby about 8 years ago. I picked up a couple cheap bike on Marketplace and proceeded to make a ton of errors but still managed to get them back together and running My first 2 bikes were street bikes. A Yamaha Maxim 550 which I ended up passing on to my son, and a Suzuki GSX1100GS that I ended up riding all the way to North Carolina from my home in Illinois. Next was a Honda GL500 Silverwing that I gifted to my other son out on the left coast in Oregon. None of these bikes ran when I brought them home . I put together a XV750 that was missing a few parts because the owner was parting it out. The day I brought it home I hooked up a battery just to see if it would turn over and I was shocked because it started up and ran on what was in the float bowl. At that point I bought a GoPro and switched to mostly 2 stroke enduros and dirt bikes and here I am today.

I've been in and out of this clutch mechanism at least 10 . times. I was fighting some of my own mistakes from 3 years ago as well a a couple other things that made me question my sanity. DT175B Stator Rebuild

I've been dormant in the TH-cam scene for a while. Just being lazy, which is allowed at my age. Anyway, I have been putting parts together for a DT175B and this is one of the things I needed. I had one from a parts bike, but it was not in good shape, so I decided to see if I could take care of that. The wiring supplies I used came from Vintage Connections. www.vintageconnections.com
Yamaha YDS3C Big Bear Used Parts for Sale
มุมมอง 1552 หลายเดือนก่อน
I needed a few parts of a YDS3C (Big Bear) project and found that it was cheaper to buy a parts bike that popped up on Facebook Marketplace than to buy all the parts individually. So here's what's left over.
Once again the DT250A is defying my efforts to repair it
มุมมอง 9132 หลายเดือนก่อน
I spent a couple hours today rectifying my error of yesterday and then looking at a couple things that may be contributing to the poor performance of this DT250A. I found one minor problem with the carb as well. The bike runs like a 2 cylinder that's running on 1. Stabbing in the dark, or if you prefer taking a WAG; I ordered new crank seals. Very expensive crank seals BTW.

I just watched this online. I'm embarrassed. This might be the worst video I've ever put together. The Old Guy I got this thing out of storage in the spring, Took it for a short time ride and determined that it needed more work before I could sell it to someone with a clear conscience. I have done quite a bit of work and got it running today, but it needs a little more..

The last ride on this bike ended with the discovery of a lean condition causing problems with the idle speed. I got involved with another project and am just now getting back to this 1972 Yamaha CT2 enduro. Starting with a much more thorough look at the carburetor. I state in the video that the needle should be a 4J1 but I was reading it wrong. It should be a 4J13 with the clip in position 2. I...

Stay warm and grit those Teeth when You rebuild that Tranny! They really make some people have nightmares and I am one of those! like when I had the whole gear saft out and dropped it and had the retainer off the end didn't have the manual and parts went places that I still haven't found yet and that has been 10 yrs ago LOL LOL!
It's Kenny Rogers! No! It's Jack. It's a really nice bike, rare on this side of the Atlantic.
Hi Dean. It is a nice bike and I'm going to make it whole again if it kills me. You like my hat, huh? I wanted a Stetson, but all I could afford was this cheap imitation straw hat made of plastic.
Do you think it might have something to do with the 2 stage switch keeping it in between high and low?
@@cainbeeping8480 I don’t think so Cain the shift cam is binding on something, but I can’t pinpoint it

Good morning, Jack. Good to see you staying warm. I like how the beard is looking. What video editing program do you use? You do a great job with your edits.
Thanks Don. I use iMovie. It hasn't got a load of features, but for a simple mind it's a simple APP.
I like this version but I think it also needs how you got it in the house from the first edit.
I was wondering about that. I thought maybe it was a bit much. Thanks for responding.
Would love to see that honda baby dream running hopefully its in the future
I would as well, It will be next year I'm afraid, David. If I would have had the handicap ramp I built for my Mom that would have been my winter project, However Mom is gone and it needed work, so I had to tear it out or spend money fixing it. Maybe my son will build a ramp for me someday.
Going to be coming back to this video when I disassemble and clean the carb on my old ca95

did you ever see Dale Sweger`s video on filing down those clutch plate groves on the basket? sometimes its need sometime not,Just Say`in!
Yup.
bundle up, Jack its time!
Good job Jack. Love the bike.
Thanks Cain!
Hey Jack, the beard is looking good!!! You most definitely need the ball bearing in there for the clutch to work. I wish I had a dollar for every time I forgot the put the plunger back in the clutch…lol
I put it in and took it out so many time trying to make this thing work that I forgot where I was when I finally got it correct. When cleaning up and putting everything away and I realized that the ball bearing is in there for the final solution unlike what I said on the video.
just for the heck of it I was looking at the clutch diagram and seen when your stacking the clutch in the basket the last steel plate has a different part number than the rest of the steel plates. why is that?
It's a bit thicker than the other clutch plates. Why ?????
I have a pair of scissors like those, they will cut anything and everything I love em!!!
Hey Jack, it’s great to see you back. Great work on the Stator!!
Good job brother. I think it looks great.

hi, Jack!
Hello Jack, I have a Very clean YDS-3C I have adjusted the clutch and when taking off It's a little jerky not smooth like the other bikes. As you know the clutch is on the crankshaft. Have you ever noticed this on any of yours. I have had several of these bikes back in the 70's but don't remember them acting this why when tacking off. Thanks, your thoughts. Wayne
Hi Wayne, Sorry, but I can't say that I've had any clutch problems. That might be the only thing that I haven't had problems with.
I had an epiphany after I wrote the reply below. It doesn't have synthetic oil in the transmission does it? Synthetic oil is TOO slick.
You sir are not professional mechanic as I see from the video, the way you removing the U join with the air chisel is terrible . Maybe ok for backyard mechanic but you wouldn't be able make money for your living needs.
Your comment is spot on. I am definitely not a professional.
Did you have your meter set to DC volts?
This video was a few years ago. My knowledge and tools have progressed a bit since then. The simple answer to your question is no. There is no voltage in a magneto ignition system unless the engine is turning over, so with a meter set to ohms you are checking for the exact time that the points open. (When the engine is running that will remove the ground from the line to the ignition coil and allow the output of the source coil on the stator to provide a voltage to the primary winding of the ignition coil.) When doing this test, the flywheel isn't spinning and therefore the magnets don't produce any voltage from the source coil. The problem here is that the condenser in the circuit makes testing for the exact moment that the points open using a digital meter difficult. I now have an ignition tester that gives me a more positive reading of when the points open.
Are these bikes ys3 ?
yDs3 a 2 cylinder 250cc 2 stroke with auto oiling . The C denotes a couple differences to make it an Off/On road bike. Different/more aggressive tires, different/upswept exhaust, steering damper and a couple other minor changes.

hi Jack
Here
Too painful to watch any further. I watch these video's to help learn but there is nothing to learn here. Sorry
You're absolutely correct Kevin. If you're looking for how to do things watch Dale Sweger, 2vintage or a lot of others. I'm afraid my videos are just an old fart playing around. I will say that I have gotten a bit better at both wrenching and editing over the last 4 years. Thanks for taking time to comment.
If the timing's right, the carby's right, valves are good, compression is good, there ain't much else so it's gotta be some small stoopid thing and it's often the small stoopid things that are hardest to sort out. And yeah, it could well be the crank seals, regardless, you'll sort it.
Totally agree. I've got crank seals on order and the only other thing I can think of is ignition coil. I think both of those items were replaced with cheap aftermarket parts last year. I'm leaning towards the seals because of the amount of smoke the engine is putting out. I've ordered both.
A leaky crank seal on the primary side would definitely cause the bike to smoke more.
Yup, totally agree. I ordered a pair of seals plus the o-ring that goes on the right side. This time I didn't try to be cheap. Not sure if that's the total problem though. I rewatched the video and where I used the timing light to recheck the timing it didn't seem like all of the flashes were the same brightness. 2Vintage just had bike that was running but "boggy" as he said. After trying everything else he started swapping ignition components with another bike he had. It turned out the ignition coil. I'm pretty sure this coil is new, but I think it's not a Yamaha part. I don't have the luxury of another of the same bike, but I think I may have another coil.
Hi oldguy I'm from Mexicali Baja California, can you help me get a piston and rings kit for a 1973 Yamaha AT2 125cc motorcycle here in Mexico I couldn't find it thanks I like the videos
Hi Luis, Thanks for watching my videos. You first have to know what size piston you need. Usually stated as which oversize the bore of the cylinder is at. Standard, first oversize, second oversize, third oversize, etc. This would probably listed on eBay as STD 56mm, 1st-O/S 56.25mm, 2nd-O/S 56.50mm, 3rd-O/S 56.75 Etc. Once you know the size of the cylinder just search eBay for Piston for Yamaha AT2. Find the one you need and order it. eBay will take care of shipping foreign or domestic. You will need a credit card or a money transfer account such as PayPal, Apple Pay etc. .
Hang in there Buddy, you will get it. Good to see you haven't given up.
I have no doubt Don.
Description for the original crank seal situation videos from abt a year ago is 1974 Dt250A Engine rebuild #6 and #7 but the filming ain't as good as it is now for detail.
I did go back and review that. You're right; my camera work and editing sucked. I'm trying to get better.
Yes, smoke is too grey and seems like the idle runs away with itself.
Yup Banana, you're right about the smoke. I think the run-away that you saw was when the bowl was getting empty and it leaned out before it died.
Stay hooked, you'll get it
I will, or I"ll die trying. I love the looks of this bike and am determined to use it to take the motorcycle driving test next year.

Ya, it sounds kind of muted, along with not having any power. The plug seems a bit too wet as well.
@@oldguysoldbikes I kind of remember a guy who had the silencer plug up? But that was a long time ago with golden spectro
It was plugged at one time, but it's been cleaned out, but ya it does sound that way.
@@oldguysoldbikes My knowledge is more for the mx YZ250s starting in 77. Things that caused issues for me was a rod that during a lock up became shorter than it should have been. it looked and worked just fine, but being a little shorter messed things up. Another is the piston. Yamaha changed the intake side skirt of the piston every year. Make sure the piston you used matches the original. Also simple things like too much oil or the wrong oil in the air filter will also do what you having issues with. I just found your channel so don't be upset if I go over thing you have already covered.
@@MichianaFisherman Thanks Michiana, I NEVER get upset with people who respond to my videos. Even if what they say is, shall we say, not flattering to me.

Not when the faulty wiring is in my brain. lol
@@oldguysoldbikes lol
I appreciate your stick to it-tiveness. I'm almost embarrassed to suggest this, but considering your meticulousness, I'm wondering if it's not something simple, like the ignition switch. When you were testing for spark that last time in the video, was the key in the ON position? Keep up the good work!
Once again as I said in the video; thank goodness it was ALMOST! Why would I say that? Well, it could be because you are absolutely correct. I believe that I must have left the key in the OFF position and because I had the wire to the ignition coil disconnected I forgot that the ground put on the coil from the switch is still connected to the part of the circuit that I was trying to test. I'll explain more in my next video. Thanks a bunch for your input. I haven't looked yet, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Well Jack wiring can drive you crazy. But I have faith in you.
So can memory loss Cain. Watch the next video and I'll explain.
Dang Jack, this is a true mystery!! I have had a heck of a time fighting a gremlin on the 73 DT3 I have. It will run like a new bike after I work on it, I park it for a few days and it will not want to run. I have been fighting with it for almost a year and still can't figure it out. Keep at it I know you will get it worked out.
I've still got a little hair left, but not yet to the point where I'm going to start pulling it out.
just for fun, how did you learn to pronounce stator with a short (a) i have always used the long (a). st-A- tor or st-at-or.
Never thought much about it. Probably heard someone say it that way a long time ago. lol
