2008 Honda CR-V | Used Car Family Review

  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. I also own a car, a 2008 Honda CR-V EX-L trim with more than 100,000 miles on it. More accurately this third-generation (2006-2011) CR-V is my wife’s car. We bought it to carry our family around after our daughter was born. After several years we have a good sense of our 2008 CR-V’s strengths and weaknesses.
One obvious shortcoming is the engine and transmission. It’s always been reliable but with only 166-horsepower and a 5-speed automatic transmission, our CR-V is slow. On the other hand, the interior is stupendously practical offering tons of cargo space and convenient sliding, reclining, and folding rear seats. In this video me, my wife, and daughter discuss our used Honda CR-V, why we like it, what we don’t like, along with interior comfort, child seat installations, safety features, and styling.
And just so the premise is ultra-clear, this is not a comprehensive review but rather a casual look at the 2008 Honda CR-V, while I live my normal life. Simple. Fun! #MicahDrives

The exterior design of this crv is really good and never aged. Still looks just as modern as most cars today.

I have had an ‘04 since new and personally after that model year they changed a lot about the classic design like the lighting and the mechanical aspects (throttle by wire instead of a mechanical cable) and after the second gen it became more eggy with no standard trans option. A shame, really but Honda finally understood the majority of its buyers.

This is such a cool concept, I love when reviewers review their own vehicles in their same review style. It’s so interesting to me because you know more about it than anyone else in the world unlike a new car which doesn’t have experience on the roa

The 2008 CRV was the first car my mom bought new. We still have it today! The biggest thing I've had done on it was fix the AC compressor but I did it myself for less then $150. It's always started up and been reliable.

Disappointed you didn't mention this is right in the heart of the Honda/Takata airbag debacle. Any that are still on their original airbags are now old enough to be dangerous, and a lot of owners are still on "interim" replacements which are no better than the originals, just newer, and thus hopefully less likely to grenade into the owner's face. That should be a MAJOR consideration for anyone looking at CR-Vs and other cars made in the mid'00s through early 2010s, especially Hondas.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

David Kay You know what? You are absolutely right. We had our driver side airbag replaced under warranty awhile back. It wasn’t a major issue for us but I definitely should’ve mentioned it.

Found your video because I own a 2011 ex-l with Navi. Everything you described is exactly how mine is. I got it because I really wanted something that wasn’t low to the ground but awd and reliable. Everything pointed to a Crv. I love it but man does it lack in power lmao. It’s the perfect size though to me and I’m glad mine came with the backup camera lol. I researched for awhile and couldn’t find anything that was awd and reliable as everyone said the Crv is. I love how you guys choose to spend your money on other things besides spending on a expensive car. That shows you guys have good character. I had to subscribe because of how great and true this review is! Keep up the great work!

We had the same trim 2008 (AWD) version and in the same color. We bought it off lease and drove the wheels off of it. It is super reliable with no issues except an expensive A/C repair in our last year of ownership. Interior was very good for storage/ rear seat comfort. The only issues were the driver's side leather arm rest cracked with age (replaced with leather cover off off eBay). it was excellent in heavy snow in the Northeast and made numerous long distance trips. My only qualms with it was driver's seat comfort on long trips (severely lacking in lumbar support).

Hi Micah. I liked your review for this CR-V. I am not sure if you were aware but the door lock issues are very common on this generation. Especially 2008. Honda had a warranty extension on these affected vehicles. It is now outside of the warranty extension but I have heard instances where Honda has assisted owners of these vehicles with the repairs on the actuators. I would check with them as I know the repairs can cost upwards off 300-400 per door!
I really enjoy watching your reviews and the fact that you’re honest and unbiased. Keep them coming!

Our ‘08 Honda CR-V was the first car our parents bought brand new. My mom drove it for years until she bought a new car and my parents decided I could take over driving it. It’s been a few years since I took over driving for it about 4-5 years ago and I’ve had some bumps along the road and things to pay for to get fixed but in the end, it still runs strong.
We actually just got the body repainted and it looks like it was bought brand new off the lot. Despite all the replacement parts and recalls, I honestly love my Honda. It was my mom and dad’s and now it’s mine and I haven’t given a thought of letting it go anytime soon.

When I saw the stuffed dog strapped into the back seat I knew you would be doing the rear window test! YAY! The funny thing is that I fully expected the CR-V’s rear windows to go all of the way down, given the boxy design and cutout. Surprised they didn’t. I hope you make this a standard test in your reviews! Thanks for the shout out.

My 06 Buick lacrosse still idles smoother w it's 262K +++ miles, is quieter, smoother, nicely equipped w premium sound, this crv has some features I really like but my Buick had features I loved. Let's end on what I like tho... sitting up that lil bit higher, AWD (Buick never struggled here Michigan) lower miles, back seat configurations, interior space & airbags that will work. For those few things I'm grateful. Great video

I really like the versatility that the backseat has with a sliding, splitting and the folding. I don't agree with you however about not having peppiness. On those occasions I need some extra power I press the overdrive button and I get a bunch of power out of that. It seems like everything buckle down and I get better throttle match and better RPMs. To make a long story short we love our CRV. Also I am trying to outfit it with Mugen styling. I had a 2000 Honda CR-V that my daughter nicknamed it “the lunchbox” because the roof rack looked like handles, anyways for exterior size it was very roomy inside. In the rear storage area under the carpet was the cover for the spare tire but interestingly it was also a table, the rear door also had hooks for your garbage bags. The back seats reclined but didn’t slide but another interesting fact was if you folded the seats forward and turned the rear head rest around the back turned into a bed, the interior quality was A+, after 16 years the seats had no tears or stains and the headliner was intact the dashboard was also perfect. Honda did a great job in material quality and creature comforts for outdoor activities. Unfortunately, my CR-Vs’ life came to an end in 2016 with 296,000 miles. The engine valve spring broke and the cost of repair wasn’t worth it. So, yes I can see your wife’s admiration for the CR-V. The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Both of my fans went replaced with AutoZone electric fan motors. My biggest issue was when the driveshaft became unbalanced, that was unexpected and expensive.

I think your wife’s power figures are subconsciously based on the numbers from the 2019 Honda CRV’s. They’re really close!
I finally understand the appeal for 2 row compact SUV’s for families. I always thought that subcompact/compact CUV/SUV’s were strictly inferior to all 3-row SUV’s because they can’t carry 7/8 family members. However, now I understand why a Honda Accord (or any other mid/full size sedan), and Honda Civic Hatchbacks won’t fit their lifestyles.
As much as Hatchbacks can match cargo volume, they can’t match the safety that the mass of an SUV provides.

I use my overdrive to pass cars from 60 to 80 . Its doesn't put that much stress into the engine as if you were to step on the gas more . Also turning off traction control make it more responsive when your stopping and going alot

The shakes, rattles, vibrations are from worn out CV joints, bushings, mounts, shocks, etc. That's normal if those are still original components. I'm sure you don't remember, it was much quieter and better riding when brand new. Engine vibrations is worn out motor mount.

Our 2009 CR-V is a race car compared to our 2003 Matrix. The CRV is incredibly reliable, having 175,000 miles on ours, my only reliability issue is the air conditioner. The Honda brakes are better than any other car i’ve ever driven.

*Emotion Factor* I would definitely say that just about every generation of the Honda CR-V DOES bring an emotional factor to the table on its own. What is that emotional factor you ask? The fact that the Honda CR-V has been one of the most dependable and reliable compact SUVs in the segment for years and years. So the emotional factor for me would be... "I can drive this cute 'ute just about anywhere with minimal maintenance and not have to worry about it breaking down like so many other SUVs and cars alike in the segment". I think that Evie has it down pat. She stated that she had a Volkswagen Beetle that did nothing but break down so she had to oftentimes walk two different places if she needed to get there. The fact that you can jump into a vehicle in the first place, know it will start up, and not leave you stranded places is more than enough of a reassuring emotional factor for sure. 😉

Excellent remark! You're absolutely right. Few things unsettle a positive emotional state like wondering whether your car will actually carry you to work. 🙌

I just saw one of that generation today . . . painted black, aggressive off road grill with four round lights . . . it actually looked kinda, well, no it looked weird.
I looked at those when I was looking for an SUV (bought a Venza) and the driver seat bolster on the left side was crushed on both CR-Vs that I drove. Weird. Yours looks fine.

Fill it with shell v power and you will see how nice it will go. It is just much smother and faster too. Other wise when in a town. leave it on D3. Higher rpms and drives like a dream :) Or use both. Remember to switch the D3 off, when on motorway.

You could give your wife some perspective as to what a 100 or so hp feels like by letting her drive a compact sedan. Also, it would help to give her some idea how much it takes to move a car by pointing out to her how a heavy body on frame truck type behaves on the road (accelerating, turning, and braking effort) compared to a unibody compact sedan.

I can tell you exactly what the shudder problem is. It is that the transmission fluid needs a complete exchange. 12 quarts to complete the process and $250 at the local Honda Dealership but it is better to have it done than wait and pay $3000 for a new transmission
