    To put it in perspective, you can beat Mad City in a single casual session. You’ll lose a few lives, maybe a continue or two, but you’ll beat it without much hassle. Bayou Billy on the other hand, finishing the first stage is a fucking accomplishment

    • @PikangsFutaba
      @PikangsFutaba 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yup, I don't get much troubles in Bayou Billy on stages 1 to 3 overall due to managing to learn ways to manipulate the enemy and perfecting my timings on my attacks to be able to hit the enemy when my attack animation is almost over so I can move away to avoid taking hits whenever the enemy has little to no hit-stun (something that in Mad City starts to happen here and there until loop 3 and EVEN on loop 3 Mad City is still a walk in the park overall... yup, pretty much Bayou Billy is playing Mad City in loop 3 or higher but with more modifiers to help the enemy to kick our digital butts), but even I can recognize how hard the game is overall, however I love Bayou Billy as it was one of the few games back then that I could use to make a mockery of my siblings for failing (and giving up on it) big time while I was able to suceed in besting it.

    The reason the US version is so much harder than the J version is because of the rental industry. Renting out games was illegal in japan, but a huge business in America. So they cranked the difficulty of many games way up (ninja gaiden 3) in order to make them mutli-rentals instead of single rentals.

    Good job on the review! There is, however, one final thing that you forgot to mention: The Adventures of Bayou Billy only has one ending, while Mad City has a total of four (including a false ending); in the American version, if you do all the practice rounds, you get extra bullets, lives, etc., and this also happens in Mad City, but if you do that, it gives you a bad ending. Other than that, the ending you get depends on how you interact with Annabelle, after beating the final stage bosses. You can either let the ending progress normally, or you can do one of two things: Hold Up and Select as Billy and Annabelle start to embrace, which results in basically the same ending, but the dialect is Kansai instead, or, you can avoid Annabelle by walking around in circles, for a few seconds...and Annabelle breaks up with Billy, and the screen where they embrace and some credits roll by, removes both of them. Other than that - nice comparison!

    Japanese box art killing it, as usual. He looks so cool in the Japanese box art. I've always loved how the Japanese came up with characters, being heavily inspired from old movies.. I do the same thing with mine, though music and even old comics inspire them.. My brother and I were obsessed with all things outer space, as kids (still art), after a trip to the planetarium and we actually still visit it every fall now still..
    I used to draw a character who was half human, and half alien (he looked human though), because when I had first watched Blade Runner as a child, I thought the Replicants were aliens. I also felt sorry for the main character Roy Batty, so I had modeled the character I created, after a young Roy Batty, though also a young Thouzer from Fist of the North Star, because I felt bad for that character as well..
    My brother and I would create these characters, and pretend they'd go on adventures in space or other worlds. We'd even pretend they were in the tank, when we'd play Blaster Master lol.. Around the same time we started reading our older brother's comics, and Guardians of the Galaxy was one of them, which we loved a lot since it reminded us of our little stories. When I got older and my drawing better (15/16), I started drawing the character I created, the way I would have drawn Star Lord if I worked at Marvel.. Fast forward to 2015, I started reworking designs to redo the comic, and even remake the game we did for it back in high school..
    In 2018 I made him in Final Fantasy 15, to see what he'd look like.. In 2021 when the Guardians of the Galaxy game came out, the way Star Lord was designed, looked almost like my character. I was happy because I used to heavily doubt anything I did, and so to see that was amazing to me. I had even got to talk with the artist, awesome guy, and he said "maybe we were in each other's heads for a moment.". I no longer doubt my work, and I just got a Nintendo Switch dev kit.. I will remake the game, based on the comic which I had called "Sentient Armament". ^_^

      Better gameplay balance, different driving stages that are not as punishing when you make mistakes, and a minigame (that you can't play unless you get a english patched game or know japanese), the only two things that was better in the non JPN version was the Game Over screen and that you can beat the game in 1 loop using the practice mode bonuses (the JPN version if you use the practice mode first and get at least 1 bonus perk like the life refill in non shooting stages when you die... only works once BTW, you are forced to do a 2nd loop to see the ending... and have 3 variants based on how you embrace Anabelle and if you hold certain buttons when you embrace her).

    First of all, how DARE you call Annabelle a southern skank 🤣Secondly, this is my favorite video right now. AOBB is one of my favorite games of all time. To this DAY I still use that final screen of Billy and Annabelle hugging each other as a desktop background, and I also use it on my phone. That ending music is so romantic, and added to that, the shimmering of Annabelle's eyes like she's about to cry, it's all so good. And about the ending music, when it moves up that whole step, it's just icing on the cake.
    I agree that Mad City is easier, but just like when people say that SMB2 Japan is the "real" sequel, I feel like AOBB is the REAL version. It's what we got, and holy cow, what a ride. I have lots of other thoughts, but haha I can't right now. I just want you to know that this video made my evening. Thank you so much sir.

    Bayou Billy for NES was brutal. I owned it when I was young and may have only gotten to the third level and that was rare. Always liked the game though. Mad City I played later on emulation and beat it my first time in 24 minutes. So that version was too easy but alot more fun. I think the game shouldve been balanced somewhere in the middle. There is alot of issues like having to exchange hits with each enemy, which has the same health as you. Very tedious and it seems you have to exploit positioning tricks to win.
    Always thought it was lazy to give enemies tons of health to increase difficulty. Titan mode in God Of War 2 did this to an EXTREME and it just made everything a very tedious endurance match. The driving sequences seem brutal too.
    Its impressive you beat the US version. Great work.

    Great vid! To make matters worse, few people realize that after you "think" you beat the game, there actually is a "2nd loop hard mode," which is hard to notice at first. (The way I could tell, is that the enemies in the water with the giant sticks now take 3 shots with the gun instead of 2. I am not sure any other changes aside from enemies taking more hits. (This was most obvious on the level 7 shooting bosses who I could only beat using the controller, as the Zapper was too slow.) 😀

    Okay...here's a big gap in the plot. You fight Gordon first, and then his bodyguards? Shouldn't it be the other way around. Not to mention that they have got to be the worst bodyguards ever. They watched Billy kill their boss, and then they go after Billy?

    • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, video game logic. Yeah, it would've made more sense to fight the bodyguards first.

    There's been a bunch of games japan made harder in sneaky ways for US releases. In Sonic Adventure there was a location that in the japanese version had an extra island to be utilized for a faster completion time, where it was completely removed so US players could never hope to utilize such to beat a japanese player's time.

    Oh my... This freaking game. The driving stage was the one I dreaded so freaking much. One thing you didn't mention though is how the training stages in the game actually award you with power ups that you can use in the main game, such as an extra life up item, extra bullets for the shooting game and I think there was Extra time for the driving stage if you completed the training stage prior to the main game. I never heard of mad city so I don't know if that one have training mode, but it would have been nice to see if there was also diference on that regard. This game I spend a lot of time on my childhood, always so satisfying to get past the highway stage, so many memories but man... did they really had to change it from how it was in Mad city?

    • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mad City does have the training mode, but honestly I never knew it could help you out in the main game. That would have been useful to know. But yeah, I hate the driving stages. Worst part of the game. So much better in Mad City.

    While I appreciate the fact that you made a video about this game, I have to say that there are a lot of things you didn't mentioned:
    -Game A AND Game B modes are swapped. In BB Game A uses the Zapper and Game B uses the joystick only.
    -In the Japanese Version there are 4 endings!
    Easy Ending:
    If you complete any of the training modes, you will get a bad ending, with the door interior with a message:
    "Gordon was defeated However Something lingered in Billy's heart Next time see the ending without training"
    Normal Ending:
    Same as here.
    Jerkass Ending:
    When Annabelle proceeds you, move around avoiding contact with you. If you do this, you will get an ending where Annabelle thinks Billy doesn't love her anymore.
    Kansai-Ban Ending:
    When Annabelle hugs you immediately hold down UP + SELECT, and you will get an ending that is written in kansai dialect, and they speak about some jokes and stuff - not to mention Billy is a bit more forceful on Annabelle in this ending.
    -Quiz Mode
    In the japanese version of you get a Game Over, and decide not to continue (or beating the game 4 times in a row) you can enable the Quiz Mode from the main menu.
    Here the game becamse a trivia and if you answer to all of those questions you get bonus stuff!
    -Regarding to sound
    What you hear at the end of Bayou Billy is a sample saying "BYE" however it interferes with the drum sample caller initalization routine making an busconflict, therefore the sample is played in garbage quality.
    Technically these are not DPCM but more like APDM converter PCM samples what is in Bayou Billy, since it fetches the $4011 memory range for the init.
    Also, in the first driving stage's BGM the lead is completely different in both versions.

    Many USA versions were made much harder, especially when it came to Konami (Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps). This is due to the video game rental markets at the time. They didn't want anyone renting it and beating it in a day. They didn't have to worry about this when it came to Japan because renting video games was illegal there.

    It is sort of hard that they recorded a different word only for the last frame of the game. Instead they may being trying to include the battle cry Bayou Billy! ..with the failing result of a crackled ".....b-ay... Thanks for sharing. Finally somebody cool enough gives a good review about this awesome game. We must accept that for worse and better, those days' games implied a lot more of imagination and you became part of a let's pretend adventure. And this game was just like that, with a true action hero, refusing to plainly punch generic enemies walking in line directly inside your killzone

    ...low key..I love Bayou Billy. It may have a lot to do with the fact that 1) my mom was a HUGE fan of Crocodile Dundee as a movie so I was used to seeing a character like that. 2) I have an aunt who used to live in Louisiana (she's got some stories to tell about the legends of the swamp and New Orleans let me tell you) and 3) I live in Georgia..so it's only a few hours drive for me to actually FIND a place like that via a day drive or so to the lower half of the state or Florida, or a trip west to the swamps of Mississippi and Louisiana..which I've been to New Orleans myself to visit my aunt at one point when she lived there, and I've done some swamp tours as a kid with the family on Florida vacations. I'd actually like to see a modern Bayou Billy game..but I have SEVERE doubts we'll ever get one or anything similar.

At least I pwned Punch Out a couple of months ago. :D Yeah, I'm pretty sure the hard gameplay was due to the Pearl Harbour aftermatch... In Germany at least we had PAL instead of NTSC which let the games run a little bit slower.

    I think Billy is saying bye at the end. This was the first NES game I beat, could finish it consistently in 1 continue, then traded it to a friend for SMB 2. Years later I got back my first 2 NES games in a game shop for my collection, this, and John Elway Quarterback (terrible game). Surprised you didn't cover that Mad City had multiple endings depending on if you ran away from Annabelle at the end, in the Japanese version you can actually run away from her, leading to a somber sad ending where they actually break up.

    I almost get the feeling that they had that last voice sample at the end, but were nearly out of cartridge space, so bit crushed the living daylights out of it to make it fit.
    That, or the more likely issue was that the programming pulled the DPCM sample incorrectly..
    Also, all these years (which, nice job, this was pretty well edited for that era of TH-cam), but none of the comments seem to have noticed the little OOPS at 12:50, you have the screen grabs swapped.

    10:20 THE REAL ANSWER is that Nintendo had gotten Japan's government to ban rental stores. But the American government wasn't so easy to bribe, and thus they resorted to making games much harder. That is historically the ONLY REASON for the nonsense monkey puzzle in Lion King.

    Is funny how I enjoy BOTH the international version and the JPN release (USA release even more due to being able to say that I managed to best the game with more unfair balance against the player due to the "blockbuster syndrome"), oh... also a funny thing, that International Game Over screen ACTUALLY appears in the JPN version... but ONLY when you run out of time during the driving stages (and you pretty much won't see that screen unless you waste the time on purpose due to how stupidly easy is compared to the international version... and it has Billy's jeep burning as well, more like how you see Billy get shot down picture when you lose a live in the on-rails shooter stages... something the international version removes as given the fact of how they used said screen, chances are that most likely you're not on a driving stage when you get a Game Over), not to mention that the JPN version has 3 and a half endings (ending one is just not getting an ending at all and that happens if you beat the game after completing at least ONE training stage... and only applies to the first loop you play after doing that, loop 2 or higher in that scenario the flag that you played a training stage is disabled and you can get any of the other endings like if you didn't play the training stages at all, ending two is just avoiding Anabelle after defeating the final boss until the screen changes, ending 3 is the international only ending and the "half" ending is the same as ending 3... but you need to hold some buttons in your controller, all it does overall is change the dialogue of the ending)

    I just discovered Mad City today and played though it. Yet another game made needlessly difficult for the US release heh. Mad City made Annabelle looking kinda southern belle-ish. Guess Gordon just didn't like their forbidden love, how dare a proper lady be seen with a man raised by gators. Also Billy's jeep takes visible damage in the form of loosing the top. The fact that you can actually TAKE DAMAGE in those driving stages. Finished it without having to continue and i had to do a double take. Nice to see that someone pointed out the differences.

I haven't touched it since I made this video. Thanks for watching!

      So, yesterday I pulled out my NES and beat this game on my first sit down, with one continue left. Crazy that it took me over 25 years to have the patience to actually play the game it's supposed to be played, and it definitely took alot of patience with the unusual enemy patterns! Then with my old school 8-bit confidence soaring I tackled 2 more hardcore NES completions; Super C (no 10 life code, no continues) and The Punisher (didn't take me 20 some years for this one, but it took a couple years to master Frank's vendetta when a friend gave the cartridge to me).

    • @NefariousWes
