In Mad City on Famicom, Gordon will start to frown at the end of his messages when you get to shooting stage in New Orleans like he is becoming afraid Billy is getting too close despite the army Gordon has sent after him. As shown here, Gordon always smiles at the end of the messages like he knows this is the NES version where everything is more difficult and he can win at anytime because of it.
OMG! Captain N and the adventures of super Mario brothers 3 was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon. As well as the super Mario brothers super show mon-thursday. Friday was the legend of Zelda. Truly a man of gaming culture.
@@billsutherbyLikely both. It obviously means "To loose the attack", but you'd probably need to know the artist's name to come up with the pun in the first place.

You provide very direct, thorough explanations on how to get the job done... and I dig the discussion before gameplay of its history. Oh, and I can finally beat some of these games. I never thought of it that way. It is so true though. I love watching walkthroughs, but typically hate narration. This channel is different. I think mainly cuz this host so so relaxed and informative. Also, since he jokes so sparingly, the humor hits way harder when it happens.
I've completed The Guardian Legend in both normal and TGL password mode multiple times. Bayou billy and Battletoads are the 2 games that the Japanese version is a good bit easier because they were trying to keep people from beating the game in a rental in the US. At least Bayou billy is easier than Arkanoid or The Mutant Virus. I still don't know what the Guardic Gaiden poster is made of. If there is a print of my avatar please let me know, I don't know why they had to change the artwork.

The original Japanese version (Mad City) also had a couple of alternate endings. In that version, you could still control Billy when Annabelle runs to you, and your actions determine the ending. In fact, if you actively avoid her for a minute or two, you get the "bad" ending where she just complains that you didn't really come to save her and then the credits roll with no one standing the arch.
Yeah, well, actually there are 2 bad endings, the one you mention, and another one that always happens in Loop 1 if you completed at least 1 practice mode stage (which basically is like the Dark Queen rant about you cheated your way in Battletoads & Double Dragon on NES or Sega Genesis, by the way, if you complete a 2nd Loop after that you can actually get any of the other 3 endings like if you didn't play the practice mode stages), the good ending is the same as the USA ending by just hugging Annabelle and the alternative good ending, when Annabelle hughs Billy you have to hold some buttons until they start to talk (if you know how to get Red Falcon's secret message in the JPN version of NES Contra, you know that you have to hold those same buttons in JPN Bayou Billy... AKA: Mad City).
Watching this video makes me wish Konami would release an NES compilation that would include this and a bunch of other titles that aren't Castlevania or Contra. They had so many great games back in the day.
I always love it when a new character is treated as if he's already part of a pre-existing franchise we're all familiar with. Bayou Billy is one. Beetlejuice is another.
Very informative breakdown of the origin of this game and its differences compared to the original Mad City Famicom version! Thank you for putting this together :). Referencing the Archie comic book was a nice touch hahaha! Excellent strategies as always! Keep it up and NEVER give up! I have a lot of history with this game, since I was literally stuck with it as a kid. Back in 1991, I had lent P.O.W. (NES), which was my favorite video game at the time, to a friend for The Adventures of Bayou Billy. He lent it to another friend who somehow lost it (bullsheet!) and told me that I could keep his game, in order to make up for my loss. Rather than putting up a fuss, I accepted my destiny and struggled with The Adventures of Bayou Billy throughout my youth. While it was far too difficult for me to finish as a child, mostly because of the car levels, I eventually did so an adult in the year 2000. However, that was not enough! Oh no, it was personal! I made it my mission to TERMINATE this game in every possible way hahaha! Not everyone is aware of this, but after beating the game the first time around and "The End" message appears (what is that voice even saying anyway? Sound like "highffff" with a bunch of static hahaha!), a second quest can be challenged by pressing Start here. There will be more enemies and they will take more damage than before. The same thing will happen after beating the game for a second time in a row, as this will unlock a third, more challenging quest. However, the game does not get any harder afterwards and will remain on the third quest difficulty level, until the player decides to stop playing. Mad City was likely billed as a "TRIPLE HARD ACTION GAME" (as seen in its commercial) for this very reason, as it also has three difficulty quests, if played and beaten consecutively. I figured this out from the former world record speedrunner of The Adventures of Bayou Billy, by the name of Tom Votava. He was able to max out the game's score by beating it over and over again during the same sitting, as the score will carry over, in the same Konami tradition as seen in other games such as Castlevania and Contra. I went on to challenge and beat Tom Votava's points run, along with his speedrun, as I figured out that entering the final boss battle with Rocky & Rocco, without a bulletproof vest or weapon, reduces the amount of punishment that they will be able to absorb, which Tom did not realize (and no one else at that particular time either). I'm guessing that the game did this to even out the odds, surprisingly enough! The only reason why I even made this discovery, was because I put myself through a no items no death challenge back in 2009, as seen below: th-cam.com/video/Pzdrn8v4UE4/w-d-xo.html
I really really love that you play all the games that the AVGN did a episode on and just hated yet u make them so enjoyable to watch played and beaten like they are just great enjoyable games that takes a lot of skill right there I salute you sir lol
Konami with all the good pun names in this era. Too bad they raised the difficulty so high; this easily could have been a bigger deal if people could finish more than three stages. Great video as always!

Yes!! I absolutely love this game!! I play it a few times a year on average and usually get to the last level but I never made it past Gordon’s last two cronies after beating Gordon. The game has a killer soundtrack and mixes up the action and adventure quite nicely.
My absolute favorite nes game. I loved Dundee so this felt like a video game similar to it even though it wasn't. Sure its hard as hell, but that's the fun of it. I also remember how different of a game it was when it went from beat em up to rail shooter to racing game. I thought was badass when it first came out. By the way, a lot if not all of the enemies are named after famous French people. Toulouse L'Attack is named after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who was a famous French painter that lived in the Moulin Rouge. Most wouldn't know that except the older people the game was targeting I guess.
The game wasn't targeting older people. The education of historical western concepts and works of art (especially literary fiction), especially in the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Japan far exceeded the same sorts of education in the west. The localization team of an old game like this would have been made up of Japanese people who speak English (quite poorly) as a second language. They probably unironically (and bizarrely) thought "of course overseas kids know who Toulouse-Lautrec is!" and chose all of these French references based on the only thing they knew about Louisiana; that it has a French history.

@@gSlover4reel Ironic, considering the entire reason they made American versions more difficult was so that kids wouldn't beat them in one rental, with the thought being they would rent them again.
3 years ago when I nabbed the game again from a retro store, they just called me crazy because they pretty much said to me that "no one on their right mind would play this garbage", and I was like "hold my beer, I'm not only going to buy the game, in fact, I'LL SHOW YOU how this must be done to win, as is not really that bad, is just not much balanced compared to it's JPN counterpart", a month ago, I saw them play the game (yeah, the same retro game store) and they actually started to enjoy the challenge overall and more people gave it a go and changed their minds about it.
@@mountainmgtow5421 I only got to about level 7 on this game as a kid, but yeah I could beat the Contra games with the 3 lives given at the start. Same with Life Force. I actually beat it twice on a single life, but the 3rd time through is just insane (difficulty increases each playthrough).
I can't wait to sit down and watch this. Listening while breakfast cooks. You're a fantastically consistent content creator UCBVG. Your stuff is unique. It's not a speed run, it's not a let's play or long play. These videos are their own wonderful thing. Also when are you going to do Clash At Demonhead? It's a great proto-metroidvania like Rygar.
Another vote here for Clash At Demonhead. I actually beat that game all by myself as a kid. I don't remember it being terribly difficult but it definitely was cryptic as far as where to go and what to do.
AMAZING! I've personally beaten most of the hardest NES games out there (Battletoads, Ghosts 'n Goblins, the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, etc.) but Bayou Billy ate my lunch as a kid and it remains unsolved for this old gamer. And you just WRECKED it. Utterly and completely destroyed it! Well done! :) You give me a lot of hope and honestly, I feel like giving it another try. Love the humor too! 42:40 made me laugh so hard! THANKS for the whip Gordon! ;)
Update: Mission accomplished! I made it to Stage 3 a few nights ago and today, I finally beat that boss to escape to Stage 4. I then rode the momentum all the way through to the end of the game and beat Bayou Billy just a few hours ago! YAY!! THANK YOU again for posting this video. It took me 30+ years but I can finally say that I beat this game. And honestly, it's a really fun game once you get over the hump and beat Stage 1. Stage 1 is SO tough!
Man, I wish I knew all these tips and tricks when I was a kid. I think I made it through the swamp/water area like twice and then died instantly on the next level. Keep up the good work my dude!!
Well, I'ma make a movie and film it in the bog what's behind my trailer? It's gonna star Scott Baio, spending his days hunting snappin' turtles, and his nights livin' in my crawl space. I'ma call it "Bayou Baio"
I rented this game when it first came out in a 1989 many times and could never get the past the first stage. Had no idea until today that there were driving and shooting levels! Being a kid during the NES days were good times
Dude, the fact that you actually have the physical cartridges of all these classic NES hits after all these years, shows you are a man of eclectic good taste!
OH MY GOD! I was literally thinking "Huh, I wonder if UCBVG is gonna cover Bayou Billy anytime soon. That was a HELL game..." and tonight, I get off work, and BAM! God, I love UCBVG! :D I listen to this channel when I relax at night. The slow, clear speaking with a full legit playthrough is so relaxing.
This was one of the first games I ever got as a kid. I absolutely loved this one, but never finished it. I didn't even know there where all the different kinds of levels because I never made it that far 🤣
Fairly sure the Tolouse L'attack are a pun on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a French painter who was well known among the brothels and prostitutes in Paris. I'm only basing this on the closeness of the names and the French inspired names of most of the enemies.
I'm guessing that Toulouse L'Attack is an obscure reference to the French artist Toulouse Lautrec. Particularly considering that they have Jacques Killsteau
You missed a very special detail regarding the *Blackie Blue* enemies: their main movement pattern is that they are always aiming to line themselves up perfectly with you, before advancing towards you, and then getting close enough to begin their beatdown upon you. If their sprites aren't aligned with yours, they stop for a bit, and then they try to vertically move into getting lined up with you again. What if you whip a Blackie Blue once (and from a great distance), quickly move slightly up or down and both at an angle away from him, he tries to re-align with you, and repeat the process until the guy falls over from ironically being beaten black and blue? I say you could, though it's obviously trickier to pull off when you have to deal with more than one of these guys. Use this strategy to shorten the damage you take from them.
Looking back, with what they had to work with, the graphics are very impressive. The hard work those guys in Japan put in to deliver this is really something else.
I'm just now catching this one, but thank you for covering this. Growing up, this was one of the few games I could play with my brother, who is blind and autistic. I would control the stick on the advantage, and he would push a or b as I prompted. We would spend hours playing this.
Wow. My memories of this game are among the earliest gaming memories I can recall, right along SMB & many others. Lol... It was one of the first games I remember that made me throw anger tantrums (I was like 6) cuz I never beat the 1st stage.
I own this game and some years ago I dedicated like a week to beating it. One of the gut-wrenchingly hardest games I ever played. But I did it. And it was an awesome feeling.
Awesome video! I congratulate you for taking on the challenge of this game. I couldn’t even get past the first stage without quitting! 😂 Another great retro title to conquer.
Thanks for taking a look at this game! I totally forgot about it! It would be really cool if you took a look at “Renegade”. I figured out how to beat it when I was a kid, but damn if that game doesn’t get convoluted at the end. I was thinking it might be endless until I figured it out
My younger brother Phil, and only Phil, is the ONLY person i know who beat this game back in the way day. Thing is, he was never into games like i am. But he did it. That Bourbon street fight was just brutal. A M rated, whimsical Bayou Billy remake needs to happen for the old timers.
the FAMICOM light gun and the KONAMI one were both modeled on the S&W revolver, and the NES lightgun can be Hacked to FAST fire , by using TWO hands, one to hold the barrel for AIM, and the 2nd hand to jiggle the trigger, to shoot FAST.
I don't think I ever got past stage 5! I didn't realize I wasn't even 1/2 way. It's great to see someone MUCH better at games than me playing this classic.
This game was a challenge when I was a kid but I did finally beat it. Like double dragon, battletoads, and TMNT. Simons Quest was a challenge too, hardest Castlevania in my opinion.
Man! I am very impressed! My younger brother and I knew about the practice trick, and it got us past stage 1 when we were little. But damn we still couldnt beat this game! Thank you sir!
Even with this guide, this game is brutal to get through, but it worked! I finally managed to get a good run going and finish the freaking game. Thanks a lot for your videos!
I never had this game, but I know of it thanks to having it on one of my NES guide VHS tapes. Those were wild. Speaking of lesser known Konami titles, how about Bucky O'Hare? Might make for a fun guide.
I remember playing this back in the day. I have the note i wrote to my grandma telling her a list of things i wanted & the first thing was i want the adventures of Bayou Billy.
This was one of the few games I could never beat as a kid. Years after I gave up, I saw a walkthrough and found out I was only one level from winning, but I could never get back to that point when I dug the cartridge back out. I'd love it if you could tackle "Solar Jetman" sometime soon. That was an ordeal!

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is a famous French artist, so Toulouse-le Attack sounds like a pun based on his name.
Toulouse L'attack was one of the better puns for enemy names in this game.
Could also be as simple as there is a Toulouse St in New Orleans and the antagonist is a Bourbon Street Gangster

Oh man! I’ve owned this since it first came out. So difficult! It’s nice to see what happens last level 2 haha
55:32 "Lonely Kambe" is a name that probably resonated with the people who won this game in the 80s and 90s.
Dude you by far have my favorite TH-cam channel. Keep up the great content bro!!🤟🏽
I love Saturday mornings now! I'd love to eventually see Rolling Thunder!
Oh man! I tried sooo hard to beat this game back in the day. I was probably 8 or 9 and could never make it further than the driving level
Did it with game genie. Unlimited lives and still took like an hour lol
@@joecanada777 Boo-urns. Then you really haven't finished it.
I used to be hardcore, I could beat Contra AND Super C without dying.
@@joegoodman8213 Hardcore, bro!
Great explanations, by the way.... your dog is AWESOME!!!
Clash at Demonhead would make a great video.
Agreed, please do Clash at Demonhead!
Another vote here for Clash At Demonhead. I actually beat that game all by myself as a kid. I don't remember it being terribly difficult but it definitely was cryptic as far as where to go and what to do.
I played Clash, you can run thru to the end and get stuck. Fun times. 1st time I ever did that in a game. Would also love a video.
46:00 That "magnum" looks like a Walther P38.
Well, I'ma make a movie and film it in the bog what's behind my trailer? It's gonna star Scott Baio, spending his days hunting snappin' turtles, and his nights livin' in my crawl space. I'ma call it "Bayou Baio"
Saturday doesn't start until I learn to beat a video game. Thank God for this channel.
"The Adventures of Bayou Billy tells the story of Billy West, the legendary voice actor who played Stimpy and Fry and. . .oh wait, wrong cartoon . ."
lol
wow i remember this game. your game choice is very unique for these videos. Keep up the good work hope your channel grows quickly!
I rented this game when it first came out in a 1989 many times and could never get the past the first stage. Had no idea until today that there were driving and shooting levels! Being a kid during the NES days were good times
After years of having this game, I finally was able to beat this tough game this morning. Thank you!
Dude, the fact that you actually have the physical cartridges of all these classic NES hits after all these years, shows you are a man of eclectic good taste!
my new favorite channel. it's incredibly satisfying to see how to beat these games that have frustrated me since I was a kid!
Strangely, me too.
Even Captain N couldn't finish this one. Well done!
This game was so hard! I'm so happy you played this!! Thanks very much!!
This was one of the first games I ever got as a kid. I absolutely loved this one, but never finished it. I didn't even know there where all the different kinds of levels because I never made it that far 🤣
Same!!!
Fairly sure the Tolouse L'attack are a pun on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a French painter who was well known among the brothels and prostitutes in Paris. I'm only basing this on the closeness of the names and the French inspired names of most of the enemies.
Man your videos are one of the only things that helps me come down from an anxiety attack. Thanks for doing these videos
This channel makes me wanna go back and play NES games I never gave a second thought to or even heard of. Thanks!
I'm guessing that Toulouse L'Attack is an obscure reference to the French artist Toulouse Lautrec. Particularly considering that they have Jacques Killsteau
Your videos are well done! Total power move at the end of the second driving level! Keep up the great content
I didn't even know this game existed, let alone play it or beat it. Kudos on finding this rarity and doing such thorough work showing it off!
Not knowing about it doesn't make it rare. It's not hard to find.
Wow. My memories of this game are among the earliest gaming memories I can recall, right along SMB & many others. Lol... It was one of the first games I remember that made me throw anger tantrums (I was like 6) cuz I never beat the 1st stage.
I look forward to these every Saturday.Thank u
I own this game and some years ago I dedicated like a week to beating it. One of the gut-wrenchingly hardest games I ever played. But I did it. And it was an awesome feeling.
Awesome video! I congratulate you for taking on the challenge of this game. I couldn’t even get past the first stage without quitting! 😂 Another great retro title to conquer.
I've been waiting for you to do this title since I found your channel!
You published this video a few hours after I got my copy of this game and I saw this right as I was wanting this exact video!
I love the music that plays when the credits roll in this game.
I love how you explain the details behind the esoteric systems that govern these old games. Another great one!
you're way too good. this was one of those "rented from blockbuster once, never got past level 1" games for me lmao
the FAMICOM light gun and the KONAMI one were both modeled on the S&W revolver, and the NES lightgun can be Hacked to FAST fire , by using TWO hands, one to hold the barrel for AIM, and the 2nd hand to jiggle the trigger, to shoot FAST.
I don't think I ever got past stage 5! I didn't realize I wasn't even 1/2 way. It's great to see someone MUCH better at games than me playing this classic.
Anyone else watch these videos when they come out and then go full ASMR with a playlist? Such a relaxing voice.
This game was a challenge when I was a kid but I did finally beat it. Like double dragon, battletoads, and TMNT. Simons Quest was a challenge too, hardest Castlevania in my opinion.
My friend, you have by far the best channel on TH-cam.
The shooting stages always reminded me of Gotcha!
Man! I am very impressed! My younger brother and I knew about the practice trick, and it got us past stage 1 when we were little. But damn we still couldnt beat this game! Thank you sir!
The thing that caught my funny bone was the jeep going 180mph. Great video
Every time i see a video on this game i can't help but think back and about Spoony. That video is such classic youtube fare.
As a kid I couldn’t beat this game. Thank you so much for doing this!
Ha, the prom nightmare comment was great. I love all the little ponderings in your videos.
Even with this guide, this game is brutal to get through, but it worked! I finally managed to get a good run going and finish the freaking game. Thanks a lot for your videos!
You are hitting all of my favorite games! Keeping my fingers crossed Milon's Secret Castle is in our future!
Keep pumping them out!! My attention span is of a 🐿 but your videos are relaxing to watch while reminiscing of my childhood..
The frogman enemy, Jaque Killstow, is of course a pun to french marine biologist Jaques Cousteau
People dunk on it because it's hard but it has high quality game play, graphics for the time, and the music is phenomenal. Great game.
I think the Tolouse L'attack enemy is a play on the Fench painter Toulouse-Lautrec
Doesn't really make sense other than the French connection.
Loved this game as a kid. I used to play it all the time and got pretty good at it. This, along with Bionic Commando and Demon Sword were my go-to "quick" games that I'd clear on Saturday before going outside to play.
Hardcore.
I loved this game!! Holy s#it!! I forgot all about this game- it took me so many gruelling tries but eventually, I got through it. Pure will power! Lol
I absolutely loved this game. Never beat it, but still one of my favorites.
