If you don’t have any sand to throw your pumpkin into, how much sand and dirt should you add- just a pinch of sand and dirt? Any dead grass or insects? Kidding aside, a nice video with good information
Great cooking young felah,l must get a bigger camp oven to have a crack at cooking a healthy meal like that. I cheat and put my small camp oven in my normal gas oven,it helps keep the inside of my normal oven clean. Coals are the best for camp ovens but over the years l have seen people put their camp oven onto their gas cookers and it works fine as long as you have a trivet.😁😉
Greg Palmer Yeah mate, the bigger camp oven works well when it comes to cooking up a descent size meal. I’ve not tried the camp oven in the gas oven. Thanks heaps mate for your video feedback and reply. Cheers Tim
G'day Chuck, Yeah mate, it was a top idea to heat the gravy in the boiling water. Works really well and no washing up of the billy at the end. Lol Thanks heaps mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Its cooked through, but is wet on the bottom, where it simmered in its own juices. While that still tastes great! You have to raise that bird off the bottom of the over to keep the skin dry and crispy. Either use a few trivets or a lot of vegetables (which roast perfectly in the chicken broth!) To elevate to chicken. But the KEY is to vent the lid, a bit, and let out that moisture, towards the end of the cook time. That crispens the skin up, but doesn't dry out the chicken meat! Use a green stick, chop stick, skewer, something to vent the lid.
Mouth watering Batesy....great video mate and of course well done as always !! So simple....we should send you a challenge of something a bit more complicated to cook in the camp oven !! A trout? Venison? The list could go on !! Thanks again mate and stay well !!

Roast looks amazing and I love all the handy tips! A few questions if I may please. What size camp oven is this? Do you use a trivet under your roasts? And do you ever top up the coals on the bottom?

They are great for keep what ever you are cooking off the bottle, and stopping it from burning. Sometimes i will replace the bottom coals. But mainly just the tops ones. Thanks a lot for your reply. Cheers Tim.
love your video. im usually camping with my big canvas tipi with a wood stove up here in Sweden. got a new cast iron pot this christmas. i have a grate that i put inside the pot, that lifts 1/3 of the pot height from the bottom. but since i will be using the pot inside the tent, and i always have my tentmat connected. i dont want to be messing around with putting coals ontop of the pot since my pot dosnt have a rim on the lid...is it possible to get a good result from just having heat underneath?
Gday mate, Thanks for dropping in from Sweden. I also use what we call a trivet in the bottom of my camp oven. It does help to keep what you’re cooking off the bottom and not burning it. Very interesting way you will be using your new pot inside your tent. I’ve never tried cooking without coals on the lid. If you can keep the heat upto your pot without coals on the lid, it should cook ok. See how you go. Thanks a lot for your reply. Cheers Tim.

In my area the rust on the outside would be even greater if we didn’t season the outside also. I guess I was thought that in Boy Scouts as a lad. So I just do it. Same with my cast iron skillets. Wash with hot water scrape out stuck on bits with wooden tools or stick. Then oil or lard rub it in till you can’t remove anymore oil back off, while pan/pot is still warm from the hot water. Inside and out. Place paper towel between lid and pot to allow some air to circulate. Then store.

If you don’t have any sand to throw your pumpkin into, how much sand and dirt should you add- just a pinch of sand and dirt? Any dead grass or insects?
Kidding aside, a nice video with good information
Great video Tim,
Loving the cook ups
Gday Greg,
Thanks mate.
I’ll do a few more camp oven cook up videos.
I appreciate your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Greg Palmer
Yeah mate, the bigger camp oven works well when it comes to cooking up a descent size meal.
I’ve not tried the camp oven in the gas oven.
Thanks heaps mate for your video feedback and reply.

Delicious fella👍🍻🇦🇺🤘🔥
I see ya took the water in billy idea👍 love ya vids mate
G'day Chuck,
Yeah mate, it was a top idea to heat the gravy in the boiling water.
Works really well and no washing up of the billy at the end. Lol
Thanks heaps mate for your reply and feedback.

Not using a knife proofs it all, finger leaking good. Get this funny growling sound from inside. Thank,s Tim. Enjoy !

Nice Tim , I’ve had dinner but still making me hungry !
Hahah :-)
It was a good meal, i tell ya. Lol
Late to the party, but what a primo vid! Learning heaps!
Thanks mate.
Glad you found the video helpful.

This was a great cook up.

I am cooking in my garden so do not want hotcoals & ash left on my lawn. The pot will be placed under a tripod. Would appreciate your advice.

Roast looks amazing and I love all the handy tips! A few questions if I may please. What size camp oven is this? Do you use a trivet under your roasts? And do you ever top up the coals on the bottom?
G'day Colleen,
That cook up tasted every bit as good as it looked. Lol
I think my camp oven is a 12in
Yes i do use a trivet in the bottom. They are great for keep what ever you are cooking off the bottle, and stopping it from burning.
Sometimes i will replace the bottom coals. But mainly just the tops ones.
Thanks a lot for your reply.

Is there a tip for timings? How do you know how long to cook it for?
@@kathyd4384 I do have a video on tips using a camp oven.

I just cook it the same time as in the oven at home.
love your video. im usually camping with my big canvas tipi with a wood stove up here in Sweden.
got a new cast iron pot this christmas. i have a grate that i put inside the pot, that lifts 1/3 of the pot height from the bottom. but since i will be using the pot inside the tent, and i always have my tentmat connected. i dont want to be messing around with putting coals ontop of the pot since my pot dosnt have a rim on the lid...is it possible to get a good result from just having heat underneath?
Gday mate,
Thanks for dropping in from Sweden.

@@timbates4wdadventures thanks for the reply mate! i will just have to give it a go then ;) the trivet i will be using is a ricecooker steaming rack made from aluminium, it fits perfectly in my pot. cant wait to try it out. so ill be running to the store and buy myself a pie to test it out on my normal stove at home haha

G'day Renae,
No i haven't tried a spun steel camp oven.
I have a few mates with them, and they like them.
Ive always had cast iron, but it would be interesting to try one and see if they cook any differently.

Would love a sponsor to give you a spun steel one to compare. I’m also undecided on which way to go. Cheers Bud
Rubbing some salt on that chook would go a long way too. Actually I did one the other night rubbed with a little vinegar first as well, didn't have any lemons.

That would be a nice addition for extra flavours.

It was one very tasty roast chicken. The camp oven makes things taste amazing.
I cant wait to get back in the bush, and use the camp oven in the campfire.
The cook set i have. I had it made by an old black smith about four years ago. He's now out of the business, and not making anymore.

oil the outside of your oven
G'day John,
Why mate?
Then store.

Tim Bates 4wd Adventures not near an ocean. In rust belt of Illinois. We get high humidity in our area. In summer we may have 90* f+ with 95% humidity. Car frames don’t last long if not washed regularly from salt used on our roads in winter.
