Hey, have you recorded the piano with AKGs too at the same time during the performance? If you have used another mic for the piano, what was it and what features have you utilized from DAW (Steinberg Cubase) for making such a professional sound? Thank you so much.

i have the c214! it was a big difference from my NT2a sounded much warmer and full. was debating on upgrading to a TLM 103 or one of the budget Telefukens but i don"t hear much of a difference that i would need too. honestly if you treat your recording room properly and use some wave plugins you would never be able to tell a major difference in today"s tech. i hope to see more studios promoting and using this C214 its the best budget under $500

Got to say that's the best mic comparison test I've ever heard. I'm an audio engineer and have been for 50 years brought up on AKG, Sennhieser and Neumann (plus STC. Coles etc) I'm looking for something VERY affordable as I'm buying my own stuff these days. I need 2 mics for studio interviews (radio shows) and cannot afford 414 but will 214 manage the job. I've looked at NT1a, Sennhieser MK4 AT4033 and you sold me 214 on the basis of cost (I need 2) and I don't need the variable patterns. You have a lovely voice a great presentation style and you managed to switch between the mics giving a really clear comparison. Now I'm going to search and see what else you have done.

Writing this directly after the singing test, so haven't heard your personal conclusion yet. The price for the c414 is mighty but it is worth it in comparison. Sounds more "mature", richer, with more dimensions than the c214, which in my humble perception "takes" more of the reverb effect, in my opinion not really an advantage if listening to both here side by side. . Thank you for comparing them ! 👍😊

the 214-into a golden age pre 73 - with a bbe maxcom - into scarlett sounded air tight and pre mixed, especially with the hp, I only had to cut a little 500, and 2k. with 2, 214s you can record just about anything use them as overheads on drums, and maybe get a kick mic or trigger and a sm57 on your snare and your drums will sound good. You only need one on guitar cabs. for about a $1000 worth of gear you can compete with more expensive setups especially knowing the 414 is on many industry instrument and vocals tracks. I also like that the 212 doesn't pick up a bad room, so like this guy desk recording it sounds air tight.

the C414 is popular for a reason, it was one of the best bang for the bucks sound wise and for versatility. That's why so many studios get them as a stereo set ... though I never quite understood the hype, the "newer" version is not the same mic as the original at all and for me, with all th mics out there, I dont think it's worth it anymore. On your voice, I felt like the c214 was more flatering, the c414 has some weird to crispy shine. Like on my voice, this sound a bit to harsh. For instruments though I've heard really great result with these mics. But sound wise and for the price, I would go with some Lewitt 441flex or Austrian Audio before AKG.

If you mostly record voice and acoustic instruments, it might make sense to get a stereo set of c214, which gives a lot of versatility in how to use it.
I think the c414 is more versatile but buying a stereo pair might be out of most people’s budget. And imho having a stereo pair of 214 is more versatile than a single 414.

I really hope I can get some help or insight with this question I have regarding the C414XLII. I've been recording vocals for nearly 20 years.
Up until purchasing the C414XLII I've been using the SHURE KSM27. I've easily recorded hundreds of different songs over the last 15+ years
with the SHURE KSM27. I'm been using a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface for the majority of my career. I first started with an MBOX 2 but have
been using the Focusrite for the last 8 years or so. With that said.. FOR SOME REASON when I record vocals with my AKG C414XLII, there is
a very noticeable unwanted effect when I'm recording with the microphone while I'm actively recording. The microphone will sound almost
like I'm recording on more than one vocal track at the same time, even when I'm only recording on ONE vocal track. Even weirder is, it ONLY
has this weird sound when I'm actively recording.. meaning.. as soon as I STOP recording and playback that vocal, it sounds perfectly FINE!
It's only when I'm recording that it has this weird (almost doubling kind of effect) and it's driving me absolutely MAD! In fact, I sent the first
C414XLII back to sweetwater (where I purchased it..) thinking there was something wrong with the first C414XLII that I purchased. But I'm
having the exact same issue with the other C414XLII that was shipped, which proves it's not a microphone that was perhaps broken upon
shipment etc. I do not have this issue at all with my older SHURE KSM27. Any clue what the hell is going on? It also does this regardless
of which setting I use on the microphone. I can go through all of it's different built in settings and it STILL has this problem! It's incredibly
distracting and has prevented me from getting any new projects done! I'm almost at the point where I'm thinking maybe the C414XLII just
doesn't get along with my Focusrite 2i2? I'm thinking about purchasing an upgraded audio interface but I don't want to waste the money on
a new audio interface just to find out the same issue is still present! Again.. after I stop recording and I playback the vocal track, it sounds
perfectly fine! This issue only presents itself as the track is armed for recording! I've been desperately trying to find an answer ever since!
And sadly.. I've now owned the C414XLII for too long to send it back in for a full refund. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
I use a Windows PC and Pro Tools to record my vocals. Not that those details should matter, because again.. this only happens with the
C414XLII and NOT with my SHURE KSM27!

    • @SkillsToLearn
      @SkillsToLearn 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Since the AKG C414XLII's doubling audio issue is still happening even with a different audio interface, first, let's tackle drivers: completely reinstall your ASIO drivers (like Focusrite USB ASIO or ASIO4ALL) and play with the buffer size in Pro Tools. Next, double-check your Pro Tools input monitoring settings-make sure no plugins are messing with the vocal track during recording. If the weird doubling sound persists after these audio troubleshooting steps, try the C414XLII on a totally different computer and DAW setup to rule out any weird system conflicts.
P.S. It's been a year since this AKG C414XLII doubling sound issue first popped up, so if you've finally cracked the code and found a fix, please share your solution-it could be a lifesaver for others running into the same problem.

The C414 XL11 has a smooth clarity in the high frequencies which most cheaper mics don't have even if they they seem superficially brighter.
The C214 is not a true condenser - it's an electret, and it has a rather plasticky 'shouty' quality to the upper frequencies.
I actually prefer thye XL11 to the XLS because I liked the the highs more - that's why I bought one, and I havn't been disappointed.
It sounds amazing on acoustic guitar as well.
If I want a darker sound I have other microphones for that.

The AKG C414 XLII is a very nice and versatile microphone. A few clarifications on your video: The AKG C414 XLII has 9 polar patterns since there are patterns between each of the 5 patterns shown.
As for it being available since the 1970's the current C414 XLII and C414 XLS are fairly different than the original C414 rare brass capsule-based microphone and the nylon-based ones that came afterwards. You could almost say they were inspired by the older ones and share very little with each other. Also, the older ones had transformers and these newer ones are transformerless. While some will say that the older ones are superior, I would say that they are different, and both the older ones and the current ones have their place. Including the current two C414 models available, there have been 11 different C414 microphone models in its history.

C414 has a little more highs around the 16KHz range and more neutral overall, better at transients.

AKG P-120 was my first mic 😊 You can get it for $80 on a sale usually. It’s very versatile for vocals! Tried baritone, alto, soprano voices and all sounded great! $300 and up range you want to make sure what sound frequency response you like. I personally use the SE2200 and love it for my bassy/slightly nasally voice ❤

Which interface did you use? If it has mediocre preamps then it's a bottle neck and you could spend a million dollars on a mic and it will sound the same as $200 mic.

So, when you do comparisons man, please do a recording without bias. Every line you said was different. You even used different inflections in your voice. Which yes, your voice is beautiful, HOWEVER, I was looking for what your title implies. Instead, I got to sit here and wonder about how I'd feel about each if I heard; a recording that was recorded without spatial bias, i.e. distance from the two, without linear bias, i.e. not moving your head around to vibe with the recording. Or oh, That thought most likely didn't cross your mind, probably BECAUSE RECORDING THAT SONG IN TWO TAKES AND GOING BACK TO PICK WHICH PARTS ON WHICH MIC YOU SANG BEST IS WHAT YOU CHOSE TO DO. And crap, your voice is elegant, gorgeous, I'd have loved to be able to show support. BUT I CANT SUPPORT SOMEONE WHO IS A CLICKBAIT UTILIZING, SELF ABSORBED, AND JUBILANT CHARACTER. If you want to do vocal covers, do them, I'd watch and listen, but mic comparisons.... Leave that to someone who will LITERALLY DO IT. LIKE SET UP BOTH, RECORD ONE TAKE, THEN SHOW RESULTS. Thanks, I guess. Now back to look for mic comparisons, since THIS WENT THE WAY THAT LITERALLY, RYANS TOYS GOES.... You're the youtube version of fruit stripe gum.
