      @@ZillaCabs I know the Gold is very popular to mix with the Anniversary, but it seems a bit strident in the highs/high-mids to me. Do you think that’s fair or is ︅ that something that chills out as the speaker breaks in? I kind of felt like too long with the Gold could be fatiguing.

      I'm looking for a speaker for my 50w Combo. I already have a vintage cab loaded with original 30w 55hz greenbacks that's amazing. I have a 2x12 with the new ones from 2007. They sound amazing I think I know which speakers I'm getting.

    I've had a Ruby around since they came out and it's never really found a home in any of my amps....until I put it in a 212. This seems to be a speaker that is a bit finicky on its own but is a great compliment to other types. I run a Friedman amp with this and an G12 35XC in a 212 and its very balanced and fat with great clarity.

    • @mattwarren7734
      @mattwarren7734 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with that observation about the Ruby. I've never been a big fan of mixing speakers but judging by these clips it seems like it sits nicely underneath whatever speaker you pair it with giving a nice extra 3 dimensional depth whilst still allowing the character of the other speaker to be the kind of defining 'voice' of the sound.
      I.E. the mix with a greenback still sounded like a greenback, the mix with a V30 still sounded like a V30, etc. but they just had something extra happening behind them that made them a little sweeter and richer than a pair of greenbacks or a pair of V30s.
      I may have to try one!

    I have the ruby in a Valvetech Hayseed 15. It replaced a blue and is better for me. It tames the top boost channel which can get harsh, reduces the speaker distortion (which is better for me tending to play clean with Rickenbacker 12’s) and takes pedals better. It’s brilliant with Rickenbacker and esquires etc, where there can be too much treble

    I have ruby's in both my Fender Deluxe's and it's a perfect amp/speaker combo for me.
    I use my deluxe's as pedal platforms and as I play mostly rock the usual ceramic speakers in the deluxe are way too bright and I never really liked the amps before putting the ruby's in.
    Now they're perfect!

    • @TheRemizinho
      @TheRemizinho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, standalone I really liked the classic creambacks, that would be a close substitute for my ruby's.
      In a 2x12 combo, the Blue Alnico paired with the Ruby was the sound I enjoyed the most in this shootout.

    In principle a G12M with alnico magnet. Maybe not the best choice for a 112, I would say, but excellent in a 212 or 412 closed back cabinet.
    My favorite are two 412 Ruby cabinets with an Engl Savage 120. Awesome, iconic sound for everything between British vintage clean and Metal in my opinion, much better, more vivid and more transparent than V30's. But also an excellent choice of course for a 1959 or SV-20.
    Also nice, if combined with other speakers, eg. a V-Type or V30 but also eg.with Creambacks or a Cream or Blue.
    For more Fender voiced amps or Dumbles a Gold and a Ruby in a 212 also could sound nice, but also an A-Type or G12H.
    I would not replace my beloved Sidewinder with a Ruby, they have a completely different character, but nevertheless an excellent Celestion.

    • @HEZ63
      @HEZ63 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZillaCabs Really awesome in my opinion. Most Engl amps anyway sound good, but to be honest, I am not really a V30 fan, so I tried a Ruby cabinet and it seems to add some nice, unique modern vintage feeling to these amps, also eg. to an Ironball or Fireball. The Ruby reacts a little more dynamically than a ceramic Celestion, and as Engl's are more or less some sort of hot-rodded Marshalls, this combination in my opinion really sounds fine. The amp "breathes" a little more, clean anyway, but even more with high gain settings.
      But this of course is my personal impression. Other players may like it or not at all. I like this combination, but maybe not a lot of other ones.

    It sounded best with G12Ms and G12Hs, and it was also one of the few to match up nicely with the G1265 and Classic Lead 80. Like most middy speakers, it complimented the G12T-75 nicely. And of course it sounded great with the Mystery Machine. It sounded a little too rich in the mids with other alnicos. If I was going for a multi-alnico cab, I'd be inclined to use two Rubys, or mix and match other alnicos. I also didn't think it matched particularly well with the neos or the Vintage 30. But matched with an old-school ceramic Celstion, it sounded pretty great.

    I can get second hand small vintage cab, closed back, with v30 and g12t75 8ohm mono. Will it work for hard rock/'80s metal? Currently using orange ppc 212 but its just too darn heavy for my back.

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Small Vintage wont give as much in the low end as your ppc212 due to size and the thickness of materials. The SV is a cool cab but for heavier styles youll probably start to lack some of the low end youll be looking for. You could always put some neos in the ppc212 or get a lighter weight cab, something somewhere in the middle. Give us a shout if you'd like to chat about it.
