The Lip-Sync Scandal That Shocked the World!

  • Today, Fab lives with his partner and four children in Amsterdam. He still sings and makes music and is happy to be a father.
He and Rob never thought of themselves as the victims in this story. They perpetuated the lie just as much as everyone else. But maybe scapegoats is a better word.
What do you think? Did public backlash and bullying just push Rob more?

I agree that it was and is a catchy song but it apart from the acting and lip syncing Rob and Fab had no part in the creation or performance of the song. That said, those two poor men were completely used as pawns and then scapegoats.

Thank you Chris, it is so true Milli Vanilli did sign their soul away. So did 99% of Hollywood. I grew up around the music industry and my grandfather refused to take me to the studios. Yes, it was always and still is dirty. So sad, and most of the richest actors / musicians have no talen. I hate to say it, but it's all depends on how someone acts on the casting couch. It's all about power, money, sex and blackmail. Anyone who's famous and receives a particular award is always late to their own party. Before the celebration party, the celebrity has to show and give their gratitude to a few high-powered individuals.

Frank Farian did this more than once. Boney M Milli Vanilli and LaBouche. They were scapegoats. They weren't taught about the industry and they weren't even developed properly. People bullied them and they were disgraced forever. If you look at today's artists everyone lipsyncs. There's lots of auto tune and people just dance and shake their butts. RIP Rob🕊️🙏❤️

I didn’t care who was actually singing, I liked it. Very recently I donated all of my cassette tapes, as I haven’t had any way of playing them for decades. Thanks for doing this case. Not a bloody, messy, sad one in the way that they usually are. Although I have to say that when this scandal happened, that I did feel bad for Rob and Fab because they were definitely used by the producer and they were naive, while trying to ride along with the opportunity, they were not the owners of the intellectual property. And therefore didn't make the bulk of the revenue from the success of the music. But they were the ones whose faces were seen by the public and they suffered major shame and embarrassment. Yes, I would say they were the scapegoats of the scandal. They didn't set it up.

They definitely should have read the contract but that is pretty much the only thing in this you can blame on Rob and Fab. Life isn't necessarily always fair and it most certainly wasn't fair that the two of them took most of the wrath. Frank's career should have been completely buried. Frank Farian was evil. Their songs were great, no matter who sang them. Milli Vanilli was just the start of a crapload of lip-syncing scandals in the late 80's, early '90s. Martha Wash provided uncredited vocals to C&C Music Factory, Black Box and Seduction. She was discriminated against because she was plus-size. Also Technotronic's video for "Pump Up the Jam" featured a skinny, pretty "singer" named Felly, when the real singer was a tomboyish rapper named Ya Kid K. She appeared in their next video, "Move This".

Well, that was nice diversion from the True Crime genre (kind of, sort of). Thanks for this one, Chris. As to the scandal, I am in total agreement with you that you should ALWAYS read the fine print and go over a legal contract very carefully, and with an attorney present. I don’t have anything else to add, I think. I wasn’t a Milli Vanilli fan, and I wasn’t into Hip Hop, or Rap, due to my skin colour. At that time, I was heavily into The Doors, I just discovered The Who and then Led Zeppelin. But I do feel very sorry for Rob and Fab; especially poor Rob nevertheless. I think maybe we owe them an apology. I know there are a bunch of people that have a couple of their songs somewhere on their playlist & with the trash music that’s out now they were actually ahead of their time. I’m partly kidding but their two hit songs weren’t that bad as compared to 90% of what’s considered music now.

Now almost everyone uses auto. tune/ pitch correction which snaps their voices to the exact pitch. And makes the songs sound mechanical and without nuance... Shame.

I think the powers that be sacrificed, Robyn Fab, by allowing them to get caught. They had to be a financial reason behind it, and if everybody like the music of these other singers, why couldn’t the other singers be famous? It just doesn’t make any sense

Very interesting story. I was never a fan of theirs. I would like to add that The Monkees did their own singing and played their instruments.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't a new thing. The Beatles (for example) had studio musicians and actors play them almost the whole time lol

I really think that Frank should be ashamed of himself. Those two had talent, and the only thing he did was destroy them. All of the artists at one time or another lip synced. That was the norm…. And I think they should have gotten more credit than everyone seems to give them. They worked their butts off doing what a contract told them they had to do. Sad story….
