    When I first got my Model 3 I swore that I’d keep it for at least 10 years. FSD is currently $15,000 & I bought it for less than half that back in March 2019 ($7,000 total for FSD). If I don’t take advantage of this current FSD transfer & I want to keep using FSD then I either have to keep my current Model 3 as long as possible or shell out $15,000 or possibly more if I upgraded to a newer car in the future. Upgrading now would get me a new battery with 40 miles more range if I stick with the long range version or it will be quicker and more powerful if I get the dual motor long range, it would have a power trunk, USB-C ports, improved center console with built-in wireless phone charging, double-paned windows for improved ride noise, more comfortable backseats, newer computer chip with faster touch screen, and more. I could choose to save the most money by getting the most affordable standard range Model 3 with the LFP battery which is only 20 miles fewer range than my current Model 3 but I’d be able to charge to 100% daily so I essentially wouldn’t be losing any daily driving range. I’m big on efficiency and getting the most from a purchase and I’d love to drive my current Model 3 for at least 250,000 miles so I can get the most out of my money. If I bought the cheapest standard range Model 3 and got the full tax credit that would cost me roughly $34,000 minus the $17,000 for my current Model 3 which would be a total cost of $17,000 but I’d be getting less range and I’d also have to pay to get the same aftermarket upgrades that I have on my Model 3 which include things like window tinting and paint protection film which would cost another couple thousand dollars. The next con is probably the one that is the biggest hesitation for most Tesla owners who are in a similar situation & that is that the new upcoming refreshed Model 3 nicknamed Highland is rumored to be the most significant refresh ever with some amazing new features like a new exterior styling, a new interior that is similar to the Model S with ventilated seats and ambient lighting. The biggest new feature it will have is the latest full self driving Hardware 4 which includes an all-new computer chip along with new cameras on the exterior that is expected to be much better for the implementation of level 5 full autonomy which is Tesla’s long term goal for achieving their robotaxis that can drive around without human intervention. Nobody knows exactly when it this new highland Model 3 will come but we definitely know it won’t be here before October which is when the FSD transfer option expires so it’s extremely tough to upgrade to a new model 3 now knowing that a better model 3 is right around the corner. I do believe I got lucky with a very good battery in my Model 3 because I know of many others who have the same car from the same year and their battery life has taken a much bigger hit than mine.

      Andy keep it for sentimental reasons and as the first true popular electric car in history. You will have newer tech when you get your Roadster 2. That Roadster will blow away any small enhancements you will benefit from with the new model 3 highland. Plus the roadster and model 3 are about the same size. You might as well keep the original.
      Finally, save your money to support the Roadster when you get it. It's going to be free but you know it will still cost you money for insurance and anything you do to it for your videos. That's my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision.

    I would save the money and stick with what you have. If the car still meets all of your needs, then there isn't a need to replace it. I also think continuing to get your perspective on your older model 3 is more valuable for the channel. There are plenty of TH-cam channels that have new cars but not nearly enough of those with cars as old as yours.

      I agree with all of these people. Keeping it makes the most sense to me. Do you have a jewel of a car with plenty of battery life and the new one is not out yet. If you buy right now, I think you’ll have buyers remorse about not getting the newest Model3.
      I totally resent these manufacturers from putting pressure on all of us to spend money now so their stockholders will be happy. I believe all that owners of full self driving transfer over at many more times in the future. They’re always wanting that and a quarter kick. Totally enjoyed your channel and personally enjoyed your input to me several times.

  • @nathlio
    @nathlio 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    Honestly, I think the answer is very apparent. Unless you are a multi millionaire, your best bet really is to just keep your car that suits your needs now and continue to use it for many years. I also think it’s more beneficial to your channel to continue the story of how your tesla holds up overtime. I completely understand the temptation to upgrade, and having a brand new car and a brand new warranty are definitely very tempting. Ultimately, though your best value is the stick with what you have for a few years.
    As far as Tesla, the company is concerned, you have already lost over 3/4 of your cars value. That means if you keep it for another five years, you will lose very little value and continue to get amazing use out of it.

    I can see why massive depreciation of your car and FOMO is making you feel like this is a rushed decision to make but coming from someone who keeps their Toyota and Honda for 15+ years, the most practical answer is to continue driving your current car and keep it till at least the 250k mile mark like you planned. If there are no big problems with it I say do it. You can make videos of more long term review usage. There will always be the next best thing out there with cars and phones.

    I'd keep it. I am in the same boat as I too have a 2018 Model 3 (80k miles -- so still have some battery warranty unlike yours), that has no issues. My 100% range estimate is 294 currently (310 originally). I also only drive it about 100-200 miles a month anyway, as we take the wife's 2023 Model Y daily for the most part and on trips. Having something new would be fun, but isn't financially practical. And, with Highland potentially around the corner, I likely would wait at least until then anyway. And with the trade-in values so crappy, I may as well just keep it until it is completely used up, which could be another 5 years (or more).

    Coming from a 2018 Model 3 LR Tesla owner who bought it used a year and a half ago, I say, keep what you've got and enjoy the savings. I personally believe there will be another FSD "amnesty" at some point and you might as well hold off and see. I also have FSD and paid through the nose for my used vehicle, but it is also duel motor with accel boost. You also forgot to mention the built-in Homelink that you have. Not a biggee, but there are a lot of things to still enjoy with an older Model 3. It still feels, looks and drives like a new car to me. Personally, I don't think you've gotten your monies worth, yet. Also, if actual FSD is realized either by the end of the year or even anytime next year, the value of FSD is going to skyrocket and the value of your used Model 3 will increase as a result. Hold out until the Hardware 5 Tesla's start hitting the production ramp in a couple of years.

    With the promise of V12 running on HW3 and your Model 3 being in top shape you should be set up perfectly to trade in a potential roadster arriving in the next five years for a set of more affordable Teslas arriving all with FSD and having still pocket money left to pay tax.

  • @Geckogold

    I would hang onto your current Model 3. I have a feeling they'll offer FSD transfer again at some point, especially if it proves to be popular. You'd also be losing the ultrasonic sensors which has been mostly a nightmare for folks trying to park their non-USS Teslas in tight spaces. And you may likely have buyer's regret if you don't get the Highland Model 3, and now feel like you're missing out on that stuff.
    Plus you can continue making videos of your journey with your current Model 3, which is a great help for many people who are worried about owning an EV, especially a Tesla, long term. The fact that your car has held up well so far is a good sign and confidence booster for those on the fence about making the leap to EV's.

    Keep an eye on “existing inventory” cars on the website - which are often discounted below the “order” price…. That ~$20k might drop to closer to $15k - which might make your decision easier. Also, passing your “already loved” Tesla on to a new owner allows for another new convert to join the team.

Would be nice to have the extra power, range, warranty, stereo, heat pump and fsd transfer at roughly a 13,000 increase since I get a larger tax credit than you do, plus I have low miles on my current car. Just can't decide if it's worth starting a new car loan when mine is almost paid off

    Just went through the same mental gymnastics as you. My car is a SN 4000 model 3 with 70k miles. Dealbreaker for me was the huge increase in yearly registration cost for a new vehicle. The practical decision is to keep your current Model 3 and drive it until it dies. With that said, if I were in your position I would wait for the Project Highland version and make the switch then. I am not convinced that Tesla will ever really produce full self-driving, so I would not place much value on that upgrade.

    I am in the same boat as you Andy and the thought of being able to transfer FSD is a huge incentive for me to buy a new Tesla. I thought to myself though if I buy I want something better like an S or an X. My model three only has about 60,000 miles on it and it’s a 2019 dual motor all wheel drive. It does not have the heat pump but I did buy the acceleration boost which doesn’t seem to add anything to the trade in value, I found the best price on Carvana. It was actually like $6000 more than what tesla offered me on trade-in. We have to make a decision soon because time is running out to get it delivered by end of this quarter. I was also hoping that maybe Tesla what have an end of quarter special as well. This is a very tough decision.

    Same boat as you. 2018 M3P but only 70K miles. Not a lucky battery with me, on my second (no cost for the replacement), and it's already down 12%. Test drove a 2023 model S and X and wasn't impressed - they feel so heavy compared to a 3 or Y. I love my wife's model Y LR and if I do decide to get rid of the M3P I'd probably get a Y in a different color. But undecided so if you do decide to replace your unicorn model 3 (LR + single motor), please do a video of why and what you replace it with. Good luck!

    Yes, also have a 2018 RWD Long Range Model 3. Good build quality. Lower mileage than yours, great battery (97 battery score on Recurrent). Amazing, wonderful car in excellent condition. Enhanced autopilot was included which adds auto park, summon (which I have never tried) and auto lane change (which I like a great deal). So I would lose those unless I paid 6k extra. Right now, I've decided to hold to see what is coming for both the Model 3 and Y. But it is a tough decision.

    Andy, I'm in similar situation. Answer is as clear as MUD. I have a 2018 LR RWD 3 with FSD ($7K). Over 100,000 miles. Great shape. 10% battery degradation. After much deliberation, I'm opting for a new Model Y LR. Some family friends that are recently married will be adopting my 3 at the trade in price. Although I would not pay $15K for FSD, for me, it has been worth $7K watching the software improve and I'd like to continue that journey. The financially smart answer is to just keep what we have. The ‘23 Y rides smoother and quieter than my wife’s ‘22 Y. Glad I traded even though it cost me close to $30k before the tax credit. Tesla gave me $3k less on the trade in than I first expected. @aslye - Have to balance wants vs needs. Have a 17S 100D with FSD. My trade in offer from Tesla was pretty funny, just like yours. But, my battery and drivetrain warranty is still good till November of 2025 with unlimited mileage. I want a new S, but I'd be giving up some analog features like stalks, easily accessible mirror controls, etc. I need longer range, faster charging, CCS capability, but don't want another car payment. The car still charges to 322 miles at 100 % at 74K miles, so I've decided to wait to see what other incentives Tesla has afoot after the end of September and continue to drive my S like I stole it.

    I was really happy with my recent Model 3 decision which was to lease it. After paying $4500 I now pay $361 per month after taxes( have 10000 miles per year for 2 years and 25 cents per mile after. I pay 219 after taxes for FSD and $11 per month for network. The benefit is that after 2 years I can get a replacement or Cybertruck when available. and everything is always in warranty so I don't worry about things like battery life, etc. The short is, consider a lease as a way to keep risks ant cost low and options high.

    I also wouldn't upgrade, I mean the new features are great and all, but you would lose ultrasonic sensors, blinker, and gear selector stock (potentially with the refresh), less efficiency (I average 310Wh/mile, 435Wh/mile if I include charging losses and vampire drain, 255Wh/mile if I drive efficient aka 75mph max on the Autobahn, at which point you get overtaken by many cars) here in Germany and I guess it would be a nice to have but no have to get, especially when you are going to get a roadster 2, it's gonna have all the range you want if they ship with a 150-200 kWh battery.

    I would just keep your 2018 M3. It’s paid for & you can modify it with no worry to affecting the warranty. I got my Model 3 in July 2018. Has been an amazing, low maintenance car. Biggest expense is insurance, (3k a year with AAA in Ca for 3 years!) tire’s & registration. Why switch to new model if it working well & can last you for many more years. Wait a year or so for highland to be be produced with no issues. If in 2-3 years you eventually get your $200,00-250,000 Roadster, you will be paying sales tax on it, destination charge, registration & maybe income tax to a tune of $21,000-50,000! You most likely have your house payment with its cost to operate & maybe paying on your Y? Interest is up on everything financed so why be stressed with all of these? I know your channel must give you a lot of income like many uTuber’s that crank out content & promote many products to help you subsidize all your expenses but most of us don’t. Enjoy what you have but within reason! Just my take. I don’t try to keep up with the “Jones” lol

    Tesla is certainly very stingy when it comes to trade in values. They offered me a little over $6000 for a pristine BMW 335 with only 25,000 miles.
    So imagine the trade-in value of your 2023 model three purchased just before Highland comes out.
    I have a 2019 model three long range with FSD (which I got for $5000 because I bought it with the car). And I also have acceleration boost and the extended warranty. My battery range is sufficient for the driving I do and for longer trips if I am careful.
    So I am sticking with what I have for at least another two years or so.

  • @Flip-3206
    @Flip-3206 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I would say the best financial decision is to keep it. You've already lost most of the resale value. Economically, driving it until it falls apart or needs a majorly expensive repair is the way to go. If I were you, I would also express my displeasure that the features you like about your Model 3 are no longer available on the newer Model 3s. One thing Tesla Inc. lacks is responsiveness to customer demands. They're trying to intimidate you into buying a new Tesla by saying you won't be able to carry over your automated driving feature if you don't trade now. They need to incentivize you to trade it in. As for the new features you're missing out on if you don't trade, they'll be there and might even be improved by the time you drive the wheels off of this one. Finally, the government rebates for buying a Tesla will have to go away sometime, and Tesla Inc is going to have to find a way to make their cars affordable without relying on those rebates. It's time for them to take off the training wheels and learn to compete with ICE manufacturers on a level playing field.
    P.S. About the "lucky battery" thing....is it possible that you're not so much lucky as smart? My understanding is that maintaining the efficiency of the battery has to do with how you charge it (slow versus quick charge) and whether or not you charge it to 100% all the time and how low you let the charge get before you recharge. Maybe you're just doing all those things right, and most other people aren't.
