    Tesla’s brand new V4 Superchargers are finally opening in the US and they feature the latest fast-charging technology. V4 Superchargers are currently limited to the same 250 kW output as V3, but eventually V4 will be capable of 350 kW, just in time for the Cybertruck which will be the only Tesla for the foreseeable future to take advantage of that 350 kW charging rate at the new V4 Superchargers because Cybertruck has 800v architecture while all other Tesla vehicles are still only 400v. There are some 800v non-Tesla vehicles (Hummer EV & Porsche Taycan) that will be able to take advantage of 350 kW at the new V4 Superchargers since the chargers are designed to accommodate nearly any EV. The longer 9.5 ft cable is crucial for the huge Cybertrucks and also for the non-Tesla vehicles that will begin using Tesla Superchargers when they all get the NACS charging connector or even for when using the Magic Dock that the new V4’s have along with a new built-in screen for payments. You may be seeing a lot of negative news about electric vehicles lately and how they aren’t selling well, and dealers are losing money with unsold EVs sitting on the lot for long periods of time. This is a game changer because this will begin to address that big charging fear that many people have and will slowly kill off that fear once you start seeing this standardized charger experience at common places such as gas stations. The new BP Pulse deal with Tesla will be monumental because they already have 27,000 charge points and plan to roll out more than 100,000 globally by 2030. As early as next year, these acquired Tesla chargers will be installed across the bp pulse network, including at key bp, Amoco, Thorntons-branded sites, TravelCenters of America locations, and at bp pulse’s large-scale Gigahub charging sites, near airports and in major metros areas across the US. For people to go from a gas pumping experience that allows a 100% fill-up in 5 minutes to an EV charging experience where there are different kinds of charging connectors and adapters and confusing acronyms and different charging speeds from different vehicle models - it’s a big change and scary to the people who are new to it. With BP releasing Tesla’s supercharger hardware as their own bp branded chargers, it will hopefully set a trend with other charging networks in a similar way that almost all other car makers are adopting Tesla’s NACS charger. Imagine you’re in a $50,000 Tesla that you bought primarily so you could have access to the Supercharger network only to pull up to a Supercharger to see a Chevy Bolt taking the last spot when you know that a Chevy Bolt can only charge up to 55 kW. Tesla has already proven in the past that they will absolutely charge fees to irresponsible Tesla drivers when they introduced idle fees that charge a fee by the minute if you don’t move your car when it’s done charging. To round out the news with some rapid fire headlines - the Model S and X have a new color called Stealth Grey which is looks like a darker version of midnight silver; the new Highland Model 3’s have started deliveries overseas.

    Certainly improved chargers, and more capacity (both in number of chargers/locations and speed) is needed. But if we talk about 250kW and 350kW chargers this will help but at least current Tesla Model 3 and Y have a charging curve that will not allow you to fully used that charging speed. You would have to make sure that you empty your battery and then charge to

    The Buc-ee’s in Richmond, Ky also got several superchargers as well. Here in Lexington, they just doubled the number of them at our local Meijer. Same in London, Ky. I’ve not waited for a charger while traveling across Ky in over a year now.

    In California Superchargers are 58cents/kWh. It's cheaper to put $6 gas in a Toyota hybrid than to fuel a Tesla.

  • @AnanyaGupta
    @AnanyaGupta 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    The real problem I'm seeing is how expensive the superchargers are becoming. The level three (250kWh) superchargers on the east coast average between $0.41/kWh to $0.49/kWh in my experience and are probably even higher. That's pretty expensive when you compare it to how many miles you get out of it.

      I like in my Honda when I see 433 miles of range, I know I am going to get it. In 118 degree heat in a black car (tinted), freezing my butt off inside with the AC on full blast, without feeling like my head is under a heat lamp. With a avrage speed of 65-80mph. And I love road trips.

    V3 does have power sharing. It’s quite sophisticated, with a DC bus to allow power to be shared between the cabinets. Once Cybertruck production ramps we’ll probably start to see V3 hitting its limits more often. Branden Flasch has explained it well in several of his videos.

    I like Tesla cars and if I ever plan on a new car purchase, it will be a Tesla. But, I’m not one of these guys that has to have something new and shiny sitting in my garage. I drive so few miles a year that my 2017 Subaru Forester only has 32,000 miles and being a garage princess, the car is spotless and even smells new after 6 years. Though I love this world and am concerned about global warming, I personally don’t want to add a burden on the environment by buying something new to replace a perfectly functioning car. And my car still has a turn signal lever and knobs and switches for climate and seat heaters-something often missing on the form over function cars of today. Great that Tesla has even better charging options and thanks for your great videos.

    Great video as always and informative. Another issue that seems to be hanging out there (which I myself have) is the fact that the new NACS chargers require some Pre-2022 Model 3's to have the CCS-1 upgrade to work with a NACS connector. At least this is what I have read.
    There seems to be no end in sight for when the CCS-1 retro-fit will be available.
    What are your thoughts on this?

    • @donaldstinnett5630
      @donaldstinnett5630 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't see why this would be so ... the current Model 3s use the same connector as do earlier models. My 2018 Model 3 and my 2023 Model 3 use the same connector, same cable, same wall connector.

    • @aaronbrulc3276
      @aaronbrulc3276 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@donaldstinnett5630 Understand that NACS is more than just a connector.
      On a Tesla supercharger, they are speaking both the CCS protocol and backward compatible with older Tesla's.
      All NEW Tesla's come enabled with CCS capabilitity.
      Chargepoint and other providers will soon be deploying NACS chargers. These are not "Tesla" chargers. They are NACS. NON-Tesla NACS charger use the CCS protocol.
      So for instance. I have a 2021 Model 3, which is not CCS capable. It requires the retro-fit. Until this is completed my car will not be able to use a NON-Tesla NACS charger. It quite frankly won't be able to communicate.
      The rollout of NACS is more than the physical connector, its a change to the protocol used during charging.
      Out of Spec has a good video with Chargepoint explaining some of the upcoming upgrades/retrofits, you can find it on youtube under the title "ChargePoint Introduces NACS Retrofit! Here’s How Station Upgrades Will Happen".

      No need to second-guess. ICE vehicles are at least 80 times more likely to catch fire. EV fires are EXCEEDINGLY rare, no matter what the headlines would have you believe. EVFireSafe says 0.0012% of EVs caught fire. Regular gas and diesel, 0.1%.

    The congestion fee seems unfair to those Tesla drivers that are not local, meaning on a long road trip. Derating the range from 340miles to 272miles sort of defeats the purpose. Unless the charging stations provide both speed of charge AND locations as prevalent as ordinary fuel stations - OR - battery leasing and rapid battery pack swap (Elon Musk has demonstrated this is physically possible a sub-2 minute swap).

Imagine if everybody else is charging there it'll be ridiculous. I charge 97% at home but I don't wanna have to wait 30 minutes to start a charge at a supercharger if I need it.

      Luckily where I've been, I've never seen a supercharger with more than 40% of chargers in use (and fast turnover). The pace of new locations definitely needs to increase, though. I thought Musk's target was to double American locations by end of 2024, which would mean like 4 per workday. But the head of the division seems to go in person to town meetings, which sounds like a massive bottleneck.

    Charging is not the equivalent of filling up with gas. The future will trend towards home charging or charging at work. Superchargers serve long distance trips and those who can't yet charge at home or their apartments. As every new home is wired for EVs (similar circuit that powers dryers or electric stoves) and Chargers are installed at apartments and older homes the average EV owner will notice that 90+% of their charging is done at home and is fairly inexpensive. So the move to saturate the public with charging stations like gas stations is just transitory.

Until it get just near to 500 miles in 5 mins, I am not interested. I can get 700 miles at 70 mph from my diesel sedan, which would require a 200kW battery and more than double the mass of the car. Other than Tesla, manufacturers of EVs and charging stations have largely ignored the difficulties of charging. The car makers didn’t tackle it and the charging networks are unreliable. This has been the state for years. Road trip charging as a lousy experience is now solidified as reality. People believe that roadtrips and EV will be an anxiety filled nightmare. Result: EV demand is down.

    • @dorvinion
      @dorvinion 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Other mfgs don't actually want to make EVs and so that is why they do not prioritize road trip experience.
      Not wanting to build EVs is why the Legacies lobby for the $7500 subsidies. They are obligated to pretend to want to make them, but because of legacy costs (UAW primarily) they lose money on every vehicle without the subsidies. Honestly even with the subsidies they are probably losing money. (it is my opinion the subsidies actually reduce EV adoption rate because they incentive the creation of substandard products)

With the exception of 1 charging station in Tennessee with 4 pull-thru stalls …. every charging station I’ve ever seen (in real life or photos, in North America), one has to detach the trailer AND park the trailer somewhere BEFORE being able to pull the EV into the charging stall. … oh-so super convenient … and really FAST!

    The deal with BP is interesting, but how many years will it be before we see those charging units out in the real world? 5? 10? 15? I have seen video after video of these new charging companies but I have never seen a single one of them out in the wild here in the middle of the country. Not one! All we have are ancient BTC, ABB, and other manufacturers at EA and Francis sites and more than half of them do not work, are borked at 40 kw or less, or have been sitting dead for years “waiting on parts”. It’s gotten so bad that I will only go as far as I can get when I can base my travels on charging at my house. Add all this to the fact that DC fast charging is only available on Interstate highways and not US or State highways, and you have the situation you calked about where people are just afraid of not being able to reliably charge anywhere they go at the present time. This needs to change FAST.

It should also divert some non-Tesla’s away from Tesla’s Supercharger network, freeing up more stalls for Tesla’s. I hope Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Marathon, and other gas stations start doing this, too.

    There is a trip I want to do in upper Michigan and it would require me to charge to 100% at the last supercharger. If I was penalized for that, that would be a good reason to dump the car honestly. Idle fees matter, but until charging is good everywhere I don’t think they should be able to implement that congestion fee. Especially for those without good home charging, or charging an LFP to 100% without a home charger.

    • @dorvinion
      @dorvinion 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Based on my experience with Midwest chargers I suspect congestion charging fees will largely be non-existent. During non-holiday weekends I usually see no more than 1 other car at 8 stall chargers.
      In four years I have seen only three chargers that were ever at/near capacity. A 5-stall installation in St Charles MO, and a V3 in Oak Brook IL, both were always busy.
      The third was Columbia MO over a holiday (last visited in May 2021) but Columbia now has two chargers so I suspect its rarely at capacity.
      Outside of those three chargers I have never had to 'share' a charge or wait, even on holiday travel. This Thanksgiving weekend the highest usage midwest supercharger I saw was 30% utilization (Brentwood, MO)
      Over time, as more chargers come online the fewer the gaps, and the less likely you need to charge to 80%+
      4 years ago when we bought our Model 3, in order to visit my parents it required a 200 mile stretch without charging - in winter this meant 100% charge.
      In 2021 when 2 superchargers were installed on a different(and for us, preferred) highway it eliminated that need entirely, regardless of the weather conditions.
      The only time I make it above 80% on a fast charge these days is when we are having a meal stop and the car is ready but we are still eating.

    Just because Tesla can charge a fee to charge beyond 80% doesn't mean they will. Case in point idle fees. Tesla often waive idle fees if the station is not busy, however if the station is busy they will most definitely charge the fee. The same will most likely apply to this new fee, Tesla will apply it if the station is busy. My guess is if the car automatically limits charging to 80% because the station is a busy one, there is a good chance a fee to change that will apply.

      @JoelKleppinger 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very, very best case, these are 617 kwh chargers sustained for 75 kwh, which is 7.3 minutes. In reality, for the next 5-10 years, these are 250-400 kwh peak and maybe average 200 kwh, which for 60 kwh is 18 minutes.
      For the life of these installed chargers, it's going to be a 20-30 minute pit stop. As new tech comes out, maybe a gas station style makes sense, but even then, I think it will have to be around a megawatt sustained. And when that happens, new installations will just be repurposing existing gas stations rather than the parking lot chargers these currently are.

    Whoopie Doo!!!!! So how will these operate in very frigid temperatures like what happened in Chicago???
    Seems all these Tesla charging stations are positioned out in the wide open cold weather with no sheltering to protect them. This will possibly cause freezing up and possibly become defective. As more EV's hit the roads, there will be more demand to get the vehicles charged up and possibly long waiting times.
    Time shall Tell how public charging stations will withstand extreme cold conditions like in Chicago.

So, there is a good reason to believe that the ramp of EV mobility will come with a similar ramp in charging infrastructure. Plus, the cost of chargers will decrease over time.
