Don’t forget they had a whole lgbtq section on Disney Plus, which included Amphiba and Gravity Falls. As someone who has watched these shows (granted, it’s been a hot minute) yes, they do have lgbtq representation. However, it is barely noticeable, or you could just assume they’re just friends, which is reasonable considering the reveal is usually in the lgbtq character’s last scene (Sasha with the bi symbol in the flash forward; Sheiff Blubs and Deputy Durland kissing in the final scene), their sexuality isn’t mentioned before hand (I did not pick up on Sasha having any interest in more than one gender), or the character themselves have little importance to the main story (I had to google Gravity Falls cops to get their names because of how much they were in the background for and I assumed they had a mentorship relationship on first watch). Like, Disney can’t even promote themselves as LGBTQ friendly! Bonus points being that Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch called Disney’s ass out for their cowardice, because he wanted the cops to be a couple, but Disney wanted them to only be joke characters, not a couple.
Additional realization: The lgbtq section barely has any shows actually made by Disney. The mouse simply bought the rights to the content when the LGBTQ series was still running or after it ended.
Dana Terrace and the Owl House team did the best they could to wrap up the show, but I don’t understand how you look at this show and think : “Yeah, cancel it”
Bro i swear Disney must've had at least 3 "first gay characters" What i mean is First gay SIDE character First gay BACKGROUND character First gay SUPPORTING character And they contribute almost nothing to the story 💀
I think it's crazy how gay men never appear in anything (unless it's for comedy, easily edited out, or when the whole point of the show is about homosexuality). Each lesbian character we get in is celebrated like it's groundbreaking, but we nearly never see a gay man character. The only one I can think of is Nimona.
If Disney weren't cowards, they would have had Ian and Barley mom start dating the manticore lady cause not only did the mom have way better chemistry with her then the centuar cop, she was also a better character.
Remember when they canceled Nimona when they bought Blue Sky Studios because the movie has a scene of two men kissing and saying they love each other?? Remember that the film was almost finished when they did this??? Yeah, I remember! And I hated it when I heard that!! Thank God Netflix bought the rights and finished the movie! And you know what?? It's one of the best movies I've ever seen!! The movie was made to be gay! Not only because of the representation it has, but because the creator of the original Webcomic, ND Stiverson, is an LGBT, trans and gender fluid person! They made the comic based on their experiences, it is something very sentimental for them and therefore represents a lot of what many LGBT people go through! And Disney wanted to stop that!
I still found it random ngl. I thought when the white knight said he loved the black knight, I legit thought it was platonic 😭 The kiss jumpscared me (in a good way)

Yeah, I think it’s good you brought this up. I also have friends in the LGBTQ community, so I can relate to your position. I think Nimona did a pretty good job with their representation. Nimona the character works perfectly because kids will just see her as a message to be yourself and as they get older they’ll realised it’s an allegory for being trans.
Something that I find kind of interesting about Nimona is that in the film's Latin American Spanish dub, the titular character is voiced by an VA who identifies themselves as non-binary, Alicia Vélez, who is also the new voice for female Ranma in the new anime

The “funny”thing about live action Lefou being gay is that I watched the live action Beauty and the Beast a million times when I was younger, and I never once picked up on him being gay or his last scene actually being him dancing with the other guy. I honestly thought they just twirled wrong and ended up together. It wasn’t until years later when I learned about the media frenzy around him being gay that I learned that that was not what it meant, and also that he was gay at all. It really goes to show how disingenuous the representation was.
10:07 Yeah on Lake, in the film i remember Wade (main water guy) saying, something like 'This is my sibling Lake and THEIR girlfriend', so it was definitely addressed but wasn't stated as Non-binary.

If there's ANY network that cares about LGBTQ+ rep, it's Nick and/or Cartoon Network. I only say this because on Nick's side, Loud House all sorts of positive LGBT rep; an example being Luna Loud. Over on CN; they had Craig of the Creek, OK KO and of course, Steven Universe. Not to mention the fact the creators fought harder against the higher ups to make such representation happen, even at the cost of their shows being cut short
@@calvinmcmillen2729Steven Universe had six seasons, a movie, an epilogue series, and a game. Yes the main series had to have a quicker pace after the wedding scene due to homophobic countries no longer funding the show, but CN still let Rebecca Sugar release it despite knowing what would happen to the funding. They told her what they expected to happen (less funding) but they gave her the final say. Unfortunately resources aren’t unlimited when it comes to creating and publishing media but CN allowed her to take the risk despite it risking one of their most profitable shows.
And it’s weird how Nickelodeon supports the LGBT Community when it’s Nickelodeon: the studio who loves anything that’s not SpongeBob, Rugrats, Fairly Oddparents, Loud House, TMNT, or Dan Schnider, but not the Walt “I buy companies & trademark fairy tales” Disney Company.
Also Avatar (the four nations one) has queer characters, including Korra, the second avatar after Aang. That's freaking awesome, even though I don't really like that Korrasami couple.
It's honestly embarrassing for Disney to not have representation of LGBT, or handle it well in their movies. What really upsets me too is that I don't see any autism or ADHD representation, Cartoons like The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time show all types of representation I want. Hell, even ANIME does it. Sailor Moon was more brave than Disney with Sailor Uranus and Neptune. Disney is just full of cowards, and if you want ACTUAL representation, Disney doesn't care.
As someone who's multiple letters of the lgbt alphabet, I despise when characters are obscure lgbt rep. I love dreamworks, and don't get me wrong, they have some of the best reps of most major studios out there, but the whole "Gobber being gay"? It went right over my head, even though I watched those movies like a religion as a kid. Granted, I love myself some more subtle LGBT inclusion - like in Arcane, with Vi and Cait having a slow-burn type relationship, but there's still moments (ie. when they're in the brothel and Vi does a little head shake when she realises Cait prefers female company) that showcase the character's sexuality. There's definitely ways to represent queerness in a more broad & casual manner, but I feel like some people might mistake that as a lack of overt representation as no representation. (Back to Arcane, where many were upset they didn't kiss in season 1, when I feel it's unrealistic how a lot of queer relationships are presented, especially with strangers who don't immediately make their sexualities known. There's a feeling-out period, and I think Arcane and Heartstopper too, get those presentations right). It's nuanced, and I feel like LGBT topics (and romance in general. Call me biased, but I find that queer media often portrays romance with more nuance & care than most straight romance media) need to be approached on a character & relationship-type basis. Just as in your face representation can take away from more subtle relationships, the inverse can happen from subtle. There's a balance that needs to be found and I noticed a lot of the best representations find that balance well & understand queer relationships, and relationships in general, are more than "X meets Y and falls in love, confesses feelings, followed by sunshine and rainbows," when in reality there's a lot of back and forth, trying to understand how each other feels, checking for signs & deciding when is the best time to push for things. It's more of an ebb and flow rather than a linear path that a lot of media takes. But hey, that's my two cents. (Also, lovely to see a fellow Irish person speaking on LGBT topics!!)
12:33 As a trans girl myself, Nimona is moreso a trans allegory through the way she's ostracized by society at large. There's literally been whole system put in place and upheld for over a thousand years to rid their kingdom of her specifically (and, by proxy, anyone else perceived as disrupting the norm). Her shapeshifting powers as a whole aren't that important at the end of the day (although yes, they are easily interpretable as an allegory for gender fluidity and experimentation), but moreso the way she uses them for assimilation (using her human form) vs. disruption (using her animal forms).
Hey sorry if this is a stupid question but when someone says they are a trans girl or a trans guy, does that mean that when they say trans girl that they are biologically a girl or identity as a girl? Thanks ❤️

Do you want to know which Disney movie has the best LGBTQ representative ? The Little Mermaid ! This movie and the story on which it is based are an allegory of the LGBTQ community since its original author: Hans Christian Andersen was bisexual. Hell, Ursula is based on the famous drag queen: Divine.
@@George_Fl0yd where did they say characters in the film are gay? They said Ursula was based off a drag queen design which is true, the author of the original short story was possibly bisexual, and the film can be seen as an allegory for being LGBT. @@athf4ever780 I was confused to when he said it was the best lgbt representation, Ursula may be based on a drag queen but she shows nothing that would indicate she liked other girl octopuses
@ you’re missing the point. They didn’t say The Little Mermaid is the best when it comes to LGBT representation, they said it had a possible LGBT Danish author who was said to write love letters to another man, Ursula’s design is based off an iconic LGBT drag queen (nothing about Ursula having romantic feelings for other hybrids like her), and the entire story something LGBT folks can relate to, specifically the themes of transformation, staying silent when not being able to confess your love or true self and whatnot. It’s not LGBT rep, it’s an allegory LGBT people can relate to especially knowing the queerness with the author

I’m an LGBTQ person, and it makes me sad how little rep we get. People are like “yall are in every show, what more do you want?” We want actual representation, not the implication of our existence, or a character suddenly made to be queer, but real intentional representation of us and our community. That’s why I’m learning animation, I want to make good stories that show LGBTQ people and what it’s like. I wish Disney would just let us exist in their stories in a natural way.
THANK YOU!!! I’ve been saying this for the longest time now! And it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that they put this kind of representation in their worst performing films 🤔

I'm going to upset some people, so apologies in advance. If y'all wanna reply to this try to be civil. I'm not trying to offend. Disney has an Inclusive Checklist. They put things in their movies just to try to appeal to everyone and make even more money. They do not care enough to create REAL stories with LGBT characters when they could just gain credit for having one. They do not care to create new stories with racial representation when they can just race swap characters in remakes and call it a day. When they make successful movies that just so happen to have these elements, they did not intend to change any hearts. They only. Want. Money. And I'm sorry that the movie studio that was once so beloved by all, Has become the definition of Corporate Greed. Walt Disney himself would be SO disappointed.
The funniest thing is that whenever Disney has background gay couples on screen it's almost always in a context where the characters could easily be friends or extended family members. Even as a gay enby myself this is the first time I'm hearing about the "couples" in Finding Dory and Toy Story 4, and the use of the word "girlfriend" is often used in a platonic way among straight women so Onward's lesbian cyclops doesn't necessarily read that way to some viewers. I can't ever remember a Disney character saying "boyfriend" except for in Strange World (technically "crush"), where it has a more direct meaning. And yet conservatives get SO mad whenever two people of the same gender who don't even say anything are merely next to each other in Disney films simply because news articles call them gay. It's maddening and hilarious all at once.
I'm so glad I've finally found somebody also voicing this whole thing. What really upsets me about the whole corporate Disney LGBTQ agenda is that it doesn't really feel like any of these characters have much actual thought put into their relationships. It feels a lot more like Disney is simply checking boxes rather than giving these characters the depth and humanity that they deserve.

Honestly, I kind of prefer it when a story is not centered around a gay character. As a gay guy myself, I'm fine just having them show up at all, even as just background characters. It's basically telling an audience "hey, they exist and its fine, its normal", and then move on with the plot. You don't need the entire story to be about how a character is gay. I think what you're trying to say if you don't want a "gay character" you want a "character who is gay". The issue with a lot of Disney's portrayals is that they advertise it as something gay, rather than something interesting- why? Because its for the money. Obviously there's nothing wrong with using words like: gay, trans, etc to hook in a certain audience to your work, but you need to have more than that. Disney doesn't do that, they just throw gay and trans at the wall and hope it sticks.

No offense, but some of your characters seem like parodies or something Disney would have come up with to fill their quotes. Your characters and even plot should get fleshed out. Assuming that your dialogue alone will go for the "Hi, my name is [insert character's name]!
CN isn't any good either, how do you think Steven Universe was cut?
@@calvinmcmillen2729Steven Universe had six seasons, a movie, an epilogue series, and a game. Yes the main series had to have a quicker pace after the wedding scene due to homophobic countries no longer funding the show, but CN still let Rebecca Sugar release it despite knowing what would happen to the funding. They told her what they expected to happen (less funding) but they gave her the final say. Unfortunately resources aren’t unlimited when it comes to creating and publishing media but CN allowed her to take the risk despite it risking one of their most profitable shows.
adventure time also had some LGBTQ+
And it’s weird how Nickelodeon supports the LGBT Community when it’s Nickelodeon: the studio who loves anything that’s not SpongeBob, Rugrats, Fairly Oddparents, Loud House, TMNT, or Dan Schnider, but not the Walt “I buy companies & trademark fairy tales” Disney Company.
Also Avatar (the four nations one) has queer characters, including Korra, the second avatar after Aang. That's freaking awesome, even though I don't really like that Korrasami couple.

Cartoons like The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time show all types of representation I want. Hell, even ANIME does it.
I am also multiple letters of this alphabet soup we inhabit, and I agree
YES theres so much more than just “i like you” “me too” “let’s be together now!”

Yeah that's why I hate all the remakes with race swapping characters, they're not doing it for the representation of people, they're doing it to make it *look* like they care, it rubs me the wrong way so hard but it's so hard to talk about
Honestly, ti really does feel like Disney only say they have LGBT representation, JUST so the news outlets can clamor about that instead of the actual things regarding Disney that they should.
Honestly, Riley being "less gay" actually makes perfect sense, because she clearly liked a boy in the first movie. Don't know why he never showed up in the sequel though. That's a bit odd.
I think he a small little cameo in it as one of those bad outcomes Anxiety had those little guys draw.

At least they're not acting like they care anymore
Yeah, I thought it was obvious they didn't care and only did it for the money...but I guess people will dream 😅
10:21 APPARENTLY?! BRO THEY KISS! THEY SAY THEY ARE IN LOVE! In the last episode. So ya fair enough.
they never kissed in the show but yeah i see what you mean
I thought it was in a short where they kissed
4:15 I'm absolutely dying at you saying "over one million mothers protested it" as if a million individual mums complained lmao...
For future reference, "One million moms" is the name of a group that does a lot of stuff like this
i will never forgive disney for cancelling the owl house

as an open lgbt person, i really hate the way people and especially disney represents us, sure, there is some GREAT cinema (not disney) that has good lgbt representation, but i honestly feel so badly represented by a TON of movies and shows, like okay disney, call a character a certain sexuality and don't give any background info? slap a $20,000,000 dollar budget on that, and call it a say
If your gonna support LGBT at least show the movies that have LGBTQ
@@naetench5607i 100% agree and i also support lgbt community and repesantation ❤🏳️🌈✊
Disney's a company. Them not caring about LGBTQIA+ is sort of a "no duh".
Yup😂
Disney cancelled Owl house beacuse it "Didn't fit the company's brand"
Like Owl house had many LGBTQI+ characters that felt natrual and the story was so good, if they cared about the LGBTQI+ they wouldn't had cancelled it
I feel like Disney wouldn't have ANY representation if people didn't get annoyed at them. Like, they don't care.
I like it when films include lgbtq relationship but don’t make a massive deal about it. It makes it feel more normal (as in like a normal every day occurrence, like straight couples) like you don’t see them making a huge deal over straight couples.
Wait pause for a second, YOUR OC LOOKS REALLY COOL!!!! >:D NEW SUB HERE!!
@@Crossantie thanks sm :D
agreed, its really cute
Nimona is one of my FAVOURITE movies. I love how Balister and Ambrosius' relationship is ACTUALLY a part of the story, and it's SO CUTE, and SO GOOD STORYMAKING, not just there for brownie points.
3:59 Speaking of, that film was god awful
9:58 I literallly never knew she was non binary, I just thought the queer thing about her was she was with a woman.
Yah the element one was a one line thing and it could be easily missed Wade said “this is my sibling, Lake” or something to that effect.
4:46
I want to talk about this, In the Russian dubbing this was replaced with "It's probably hard with adopted children. I would never dare to do that." So yeah pennies
And people still say that the company is woke.
Thank you for that video. I'm not a part of an LGBTQ+ community but this is a really interesting subject.
Thanks for doing all the research. Kinda agree with all the points you've made.
I was pleasantly surprised that a gay character was the main character in Agatha All Along
Elemental is an Underrated gem like Onward. I don’t mind Lake and their partner cause aren’t that important to the story (I’m Bisexual)
i didnt even know they were enby until i saw this vid
alex's tweets are always so real
in Czech dub of Elemental they actually reffered to the nonbinary character by a actual nongendered way of saying a sibling, so that's at least better than the og
I’ll die on this hill but ParaNorman came out in 2012 had an actual gay character and that they hint at throughout the film and even confirms he has a boyfriend at the end. Then there’s Wendall and Wild which has a whole trans character which again you wouldn’t know because they’re so low key about it and not making that the entire personality
Both underrated movies right here!
I mean anyone can tell. But I agree that it isn't in your face.
I love those movies! I have watched them even tho I don't support LGBT.😊
@@ashleyrodriguez2050 “Even though you don’t support it”? What the hell does that even mean? What do you not support? Do you want to take our rights away? Are you giving too much of a shit about things that don’t affect you? You can’t be friendly around us and watch our media and then turn around and say you don’t support us. Try understanding us for a change. If you don’t mind engaging with our media, maybe actually learn something from it…
@@gemstone108 I mean I don't care too much about it. That's what I mean. I can watch something that involves LGBTQ but it doesn't mean that I support. For example. I had no idea the girl in elemental was bisexual...does that matter to me? No. It doesn't. So that's what I mean.🙃
Thats not the main point. These movies aren't romances. They're kid movies with a fun little story (even if the stories themselves are questionable these days). So yeah, there's my hot take.
What about small gay creators who make art about their own experiences? Are you saying they can’t have a voice?
@gemstone108 That is not at all what he said or implied....
"I like waffles"
"So you hate pancakes?"
like, no, that's not what was said or implied...
@gemstone108 I never said that so don't twist my words. If they want to make art about their own experiences, then they are free to do so. It's their choice and they have a voice to use. Whether or not it's heard isn't up to them, it's up to those who choose whether or not to listen.
I don't know where you got your assumptions from my comment. I was starting a simple opinion of how I feel about how we are portrayed in the media, which has been ok for the most part (besides the occasional stereotype). Now I hope you have a good day.
@@gemstone108How did you somehow reach that hard?
As a bi person the only ‘good’ gay couple was in toh amity and Luz, they actually do it right
real😭 im lesbian and i LOVED lumity so much because they had so much character development, and they were written right >.
@@paper_inanimateinsanity and what did Disney do? On yes they canceled the owl house and i well never forgive they for that
I'm a queer writer (as in I write LGBT stories and I'm queer myself), and I know for a fact any screenplay I make is NOT going to Disney

@@highsourjamapple9141yes like with journal three (gravity falls) they changed one of the lines in there to explicitly show someone being a friend instead of it being up to interpretation and Alex Hirsch said he didn’t tell anyone to change it
A24!
No offense, but some of your characters seem like parodies or something Disney would have come up with to fill their quotes.
Your characters and even plot should get fleshed out. Assuming that your dialogue alone will go for the "Hi, my name is [insert character's name]! My pronouns are [insert pronouns]" it likely wouldn't work very well for a story that isn't purely for comedy.
Also, the story should have many themes that are relatable to general audiences instead of something that is self-serving.
Have a good day.
@@FireGlitch k
it's something that I barely get to work on so yeah, not everything is going to be completely perfect. and the dialogue thing was because of the fact their job involves meeting a lot of people. there's still more to the whole thing than what I wrote down
also its not a big deal if it's self-serving, I highly doubt I'll actually get anywhere with anything I write, so I just want to do what I want sometime
btw they recently banned a trans episode of moon girl magic. It leaked recently.
Also like, Disney canceling the entire third season of the Owl House which resulted it to be rushed and was why there were only three episodes. And the first kiss scene between Luz and Amity was completely cut out in, you guessed it, Russian and Chinese dubs/versions of the show.
i do think the answer lies as to why they didn't promote either strange world or even lightyear for that matter is because they were saving all the promotion for their disney+ release. not a theatrical run. i remember when the movie was supposed to be in theatres still clicking on many youtube videos and an ad for both animated films saying you can watch it on their streaming platform. so my guess is they didn't advertise those films very was was to take advantage of the streaming trend at the time. and my best guess why they still released the films in theatres might just be out of a sense of obligation or something. that i'm still not to sure on.
12:43 “ARMCHOPPING IS NOT A LOVELANGUAGE!!” Genuinely my favorite scene in the movie 😭🤣
