The problem is the premise isn't built for a franchise. As it has been clearly demonstrated to us, you can only really get 2 good movies out of this premise. A prequel is obvious for another 3rd but Salvation shat the bed on that one.
I would love to know which writers on the panel thought it was a good idea to kill off the character that made T2 so special. It was Edward Furlong as John Connor that kept our hearts in the movie & rooting for him. Now they just completely destroyed the franchise. Saw the movie on opening night here in the UK and as a Terminator fan you hit the nail on the head with everything you alluded to in this review, you're 100% spot on in my opinion, I had the same thoughts and feelings after seeing the movie myself.
They should have just done a full on Future War film. No more time travel. Just full on war like in T1 flashbacks, nothing looked as dark and bleak as that, that was the real dark fate we needed.
The original "Terminator" was a film of its time. A low budget science fiction film that did't need spectacular effects to be entertaining. James Cameron made a second film to take advantage of the new computer effects. Even those effects were used sparingly but it was a tool used to take J C vision to another level. The films that followed weren't necessary because you could only tell the same story so many times.
I will not see any Terminator movie that kills off John Connor and is not played by Edward Furlong. This will never by me T3 sequel with their moronic decisions!

I think the biggest problem about this movie is that nobody wanted or needed it.

They should have just done a full on Future War film. No more time travel. Just full on war like in T1 flashbacks, nothing looked as dark and bleak as that, that was the real dark fate we needed.

The original "Terminator" was a film of its time. A low budget science fiction film that did't need spectacular effects to be entertaining. James Cameron made a second film to take advantage of the new computer effects. Even those effects were used sparingly but it was a tool used to take J C vision to another level. The films that followed weren't necessary because you could only tell the same story so many times.

They need to just stop trying to do Terminator movies. Terminator 2 had ended the series perfectly. There was never a reason to make any more sequel

I will not see any Terminator movie that kills off John Connor and is not played by Edward Furlong. This will never by me T3 sequel with their moronic decisions!
