Star Wars was a money printing machine if I, a humble production worker, were given the francize back when Mr. Lucas sold it I would have made a shit ton of money for Disney. All I or anyone with a brain would have to do is hire a competent director who LOVES Star Wars, use Mr. Lucas's outline for the sequel trilogy and make movies about the Star Wars expanded universe from the many novels available. Easy, Mr. Lucas had already done the hard work, all Disney had to do was ride his coattails all the way to the bank. "We have no source material." Kathleen Kennedy.
You are correct. Any half intelligent person would have made billions more than Disney, and think of the billions in toy sales instead of the toys ending up at Ollie's to be laughed at. All you had to do is film some of the better Star Wars novels that had appeared.
It made money because they understood the different audiences. There are the hardcore fans that absorb nearly everything: toys, comics, novels, tv shows, etc. Then there are the casual fans who only know/care about the movies. Sure, sometimes there's overlap for specific media like The Mandalorian, but for the most part the latter group don't care. They also tend to get bored with franchises when too much content is thrown at them. This is why the non feature film content tends to be far less expensive to produce than feature films. Remember when DIsney faced a backlash with all the cheap straight to DVD "sequels". Now, Star Wars (an Marvel) are facing a similar backlash, but the content isn't cheap. They're spending feature film money on TV shows that don't even have commercial revenue to pay for them. The "modern audience" they are trying to cater to is made up of people from the latter group. The "marginalized people" who would have been part of the former group WERE ALREADY STAR WARS FANS!!! They liked it already. Most people aren't really into sci-fi/fantasy to the degree Lucasfilm is pumping out shows.
Throughout the 1980s, Lucas revealed several ideas he had in mind for the sequels; he described it as "like a saga, the story of a group of people, a family." They would begin roughly 20 to 40 years after Return of the Jedi[18][35] and involve the core cast in their 60s or 70s,[36][37] and would deal with the rebuilding of the republic.[38] and their main theme would be "the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong."[36] "If the first trilogy is social and political and talks about how society evolves, Star Wars is more about personal growth and self realization, and the third deals with moral and philosophical problems. The sequel is about Jedi Knighthood, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned." Han and Leia would be a couple.[39] R2-D2 and C-3PO would be the only characters who might continue through all nine films.[18][40][23][18] The story would focus on Luke, who would be a sixty-year-old Jedi Knight[39] in a romantic relationship with a female.[41] According to Lucas, "what happens to Luke… is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If I'm really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke."
Where do you go as a writer when you've established a Mary Sue character who's already ascended to the mountaintop without taking a single step? Boxed yourself in there, haven't you?
They never even tried to make her likable. Such a waste of money and screen time. Hopefully the current era of gender politics is over and we can get back to making entertainment entertaining again.
@@CorporateCornholio She seems like a likable person in real life. When she was still young she was pretty cute. She could've had a lot of fans if she wasn't written so poorly and appearing in such a stupid story.
@@fakecubed Her character is a cold fish. Highly unlikable and unrelatable. Could care if she lived or died. Even the directors didn't know who she was until the last minute.
The trouble with a Mary Sue is no one but the author enjoys it. It’s an idealized version of what the author wants to depict themselves as, to be recognized as. If you don’t share the same fantasy as the author, a Sue just comes off as, if not arrogant or preachy herself, then like you are being arrogantly preached at. They’re not always girl bosses (far from it) but even if say you have a perpetual victim Sue, it’s the overblown idealization that makes it unpalatable to anyone who isn’t in on the fantasy.
The fact that KK never publicly said that 15 announced movie are not happening says a lot about her ego and how she pretends everything is fine, until everybody forgets it was announced. That woman will never admit failure

Ok but I will admit that I would watch a Star Wars movie that is based on a Janitor with force powers. He will clean up the mistakes of the past. Imagine he has a mop that is actually a dual lightsaber! This thing writes itself!
Lucas film is where everyone that spent years finding new and interesting "attractions" for predators of a certain flavor get to spend years getting rewarded for all their hard work.
Disney has taken a few steps that seem to show that they are starting to get tired of lighting cigars with 100 dollar bills. So perhaps they did shelf it. They just won't admit or talk about it.
With what? They have nothing in pipeline that they seem to be serious about and cancelation of Acolyte most likely canceled whole other line of similar shows. Most likely they will just quietly dismantle Lucasfilm to gather dust and Kathleen would just stay in her token position untill retirement at Disney.
@@madkoala2130 Indeed. Its telling that they have not managed to get a single film to cinema for years. They have focused on Disney + shows that got worse and worse. The last trilogy that was announced was supposed to be a Rey film, then another film set in the past about how they Jedi started and one more in the far future....that was the plan. Then after a few months it was all changed, suddenly a Mando film appeared and is pushed to the front of the queue as the Rey film is nothing more than an idea. The other film ended up more or less as the Acolyte and the third is scrapped and no one seems to know what if anything will happen next. That was meant to be Waititi's film. The Mando film is just season 4 turned into a movie...its all a complete mess...and I am betting the Mando film will not do as well as they think after the crapfest of season 3...

I have decided to leave GL Star Wars as a separate franchise entirely. Anything from Disney is now “Battles in Space”. They don’t even deserve the name Star Wars 👏
@@edroseptic9442 Wookiepedia does have an entire legends section, and is well maintained and separate. I just wish they'd remove all the pronouns in the entries to their canon side. They can keep those.
One huge part of og Lucasfilm (before the dark times) was how GL knew that it wasn’t so much movie tickets that was gonna make his company money. It was merchandise. That’s why he kept the control. I’ve noticed something from Disney just today. If you look at product lines they are not just ignoring the new Star Wars franchise for merch but they are pumping out nostalgia merch like crazy. Why? Because the new crap doesn’t sell. And they know it. Look at Lego. Go on their site and open the theme for Star Wars. 14 items down you’ll finally see a modern shows merch and not one featured is episode 7-9 or any new show except Mando. Disney knows the shills they latched to are not the base and they are quietly trying to change their focus without alerting the shills or the rest of us.
Disney is actually taking a similar approach, except, not with merchandise but with traffic to their physical properties. Disney craps this garbage out to keep it in the minds of people, to have people continuously talking about it. This in turn spurs people to go to their theme parks and, yes, buy the OLD merch. Disney profits continue to rise even while their media arm loses more and more money.
Yeah, even in video games. You don't see many modern star wars games taking place in the sequel era. So far, most games either take place in the og trilogy, or prequel. The only exposure of the new trilogy got in a game was star wars battlefront, and the sequel stuff got shoved to the side to focus on the clone wars updates
@@Mister_Livio same I hope it’s cancelled for good! They literally took the new Jedi order concept from the expanded universe from Luke Skywalker and tried to give it to Rey. Hope the film is canned
The Sequel Trilogy ended up being a very poor retelling of the Original Trilogy, rather than a continuation of George Lucas' story, one that was done to replace Luke Skywalker as the Jedi to rebuild the Order with a female character who was completely flawless and overpowered, who even stole the Skywalker name at the end. This decision obviously upset large portions of the fandom and if they had pressed ahead with a new trilogy centered around Rey, with the first film directed by a Misandrist Feminist, it would have failed spectacularly at the Box Office.
Yeah, let's compare it to Timothy Zahn's popular book trilogy set 5 years after ROTJ. Those books were, strictly speaking, a retread of the films themselves, with the similarities even being alluded to at times. However, the key differences were that Zahn did a brilliant job at imagining what the galaxy would be like 5 years into the New Republic; and also he had great respect for the canon characters. While he clearly liked his own OCs and made some of them super powerful and intelligent, he never did so at the expense of Lucas'.
This is a good point. Even watching it you FEEL like you're batman-er I mean you FEEL like you're watching "Star Wars 2", the female reboot. Not Star Wars 7, the third of a set of trilogies.
They legit marketed "the epic conclusion of the Skywalker Saga" in Ep 9 and proceeded to kill the skywalkers and leave us with a Palpatine. It doesnt get any more obvious then that as to how they really felt about Star Wars fans.
Studios and directors thought it was "cool" to insult and belittle fans, and then acted shocked and offended when the fans turned their backs on them. (That said, as badly as they treated Han and Luke, I actually think they might've spared Leia had Carrie Fisher not passed away).
The only reason I'd like to see another Rey movie is for the great Drinker commentary the movie will certainly generate. This one was particularly funny. Nice job, Drinker!

As someone who has watched several of his films. I would be absolutely delighted if Taika Waititi had absolutely nothing to do with movies ever again! 😂

Kennedy’s blunders have damaged Disney’s reputation and cost hundreds of millions of dollars yet she remains in the job. Why? Because she’s part of the Executive Class and they always protect their own. Years ago my company hired a suit that was completely incompetent. He had no people skills and made endless bad decisions that went on for ages and drove us nuts. When his managers refused to do anything about him we threatened strike action. They countered with threats of legal action, but suggested that if we withdrew our action then ‘something would change.’ We withdrew but still nothing changed. He was eventually fired for making a blunder that embarrassed his boss. That’s how it works at the top folks.
I'm not sure that analogy works, man. Kathleen Kennedy has embarrassed her boss repeatedly with her continuous failures over the past decade, and she's still here.
At least Star Trek produced Picard Season 3, which respected the old characters and lore and even moved their stories forward. Disney never got anywhere close to that.
The only new Rey movie worth making is one where Q from Star Trek snaps the sequel trilogy out of existence in the first two minutes, and the proper and rightful Episode 7 starts immediately after.
I've recently rewatched the prequel trilogy and it's amazing how well they hold up;. yes some of the acting was poor and scripts were... less than optimal but the fact there was a coherent plot across all 3 films telling snapshots from a single story was beautifully realised. oh, and lightsabres were treated with respect with decent choreography and showing the proper consequences...
Meh. Mark Hamill was also maybe 100lb soaking wet in his Jedi robe. The problem isn't her gender or size, and I don't think Daisy did a terrible job portraying what was written. The problem was/is that what was written was awful. And of course the fact that they thought all they needed to do was drop pod in a girl boss was a big reason why. Laziness, etc.

Realistically, the Rey movie should be canceled, but it won’t. Kathleen bet everything on Rey becoming the new Luke, and to cancel it would be an even bigger admission of failure than canceling the Acolyte. Not to mention, imagine the meltdown the director will have if her feminist propaganda gets shelves.
Yeah, but at some point the people controlling the money are going to turn off the spigot. No matter how much fealty they have to the intersectional feminist ideology, they can only indulge the nonsense for so long. It's like when the Army knows war is on the horizon, the white guys and patriotism come back into recruiting commercials, and cartoons about Emma and her two moms and social justice marching go on the shelf. Only during rich and safe times is there tolerance for things that don't work and don't make money.
It's probably not up to KK, who still has to answer to the big bosses at Disney. They may not have a shred of artistic integrity (just look at how many train wreck projects / franchises they've allowed); however, they're probably tired of writing blank cheques that essentially bounce.
It's pretty unusual for them to openly cancel things, isn't it? I mean, every so often we get an assurance that there really will be a Rian Johnson trilogy or a Patti Jenkins Rogue Squadron movie some time in the mythical future. Continual delays is the KK version of cancellation, heh.

To me this whole thing is very simple: the IV, V, VI - always, the I, II, III - sometimes, the rest of them - don't bother, not worth your time and money.
I think people miss the point of these Star Wars movies, shows, games, hell even merchandise. The point is to make you hate them. They don't seem to care how much money it takes to ruin things that many of the "wrong think types" like us enjoy. The point is to destroy our culture and replace it with their twisted vision. They aren't incompetent, they know what people want, they are very intentionally destroying the franchise.
I think that's definitely part of it. But I do think that at least some of these people are trying and are just incompetent. But the powers that be certainly do seem to be bent on destruction instead of creativity.
Waititi is the perfect example of someone that has done interesting and high quality work but is then allowed to run something outside of their wheelhouse. This then fails because they can't transition to the new expectations and concepts.

What was the outline for the sequel trilogy?

You're Welcome! 😀
Bummer! I was SO looking forward to seeing Daisy Ridley with a beard milking a walrus.
And thank you in advance for my new nightmare.
Disney knows the shills they latched to are not the base and they are quietly trying to change their focus without alerting the shills or the rest of us.
kathleen nemow yhw rof nossel a eb lliw ydennek

Disney is actually taking a similar approach, except, not with merchandise but with traffic to their physical properties. Disney craps this garbage out to keep it in the minds of people, to have people continuously talking about it. This in turn spurs people to go to their theme parks and, yes, buy the OLD merch. Disney profits continue to rise even while their media arm loses more and more money.
The merchandise focus on legacy OG Star Wars is very telling
Yeah, even in video games. You don't see many modern star wars games taking place in the sequel era. So far, most games either take place in the og trilogy, or prequel. The only exposure of the new trilogy got in a game was star wars battlefront, and the sequel stuff got shoved to the side to focus on the clone wars updates

I still have that Mauler line in my head "Luke begins to date Poe. Chewie becomes a Jedi." 😂 😂
Ich hätte es gerne gesehen, nicht den Film aber das scheitern!
The sequel trilogy was literally Dark Empire at home.

Dude, I can't believe you're in Dungeon Crawler Carl book 3. That's about the coolest thing I've heard this year. I know, my life is boring. But when two things I completely love end up doing something together, it's exciting AF. Congrats, man!
I cancelled Disney+ because of The Acolyte, it was worse than Rebel Moon. How do you make something worse than Rebel Moon?? Disney has lost its way.
Then there was Ahsoka.

Surprised you waited that long to cancel +. I binned that trash after mandolorian 2
Took you thay long???
Daisy Ridley once played a corpse in some tv series. Honestly, her best most believable performance to date.
Maybe the endless Rey peg warmer action figures over the years was a red flag.
Guillermo del Toro was going to make a Jaba movie?! that could have been cool.
