I have a tri-color. He's incredibly stubborn but his version of stubborn is not wanting to do anything. When he "runs away" he doesn't get far because he's too lazy. And he's the most lovey dovey little bugger on the planet!
I had my Basset Hound for 11 years. It is 48 years since she died and I still miss her, even though I had other, much loved, pooches after her. They are quirky dogs, but the most loveable pets imaginable. It took a while too house train her and although my husband jokes that she was an excellent watch dog, always watching what she could have to eat!!, her baying was so loud and deep that those who didn't know her were terrified of her. We had a powerful V6 Ford Ranchero Pick-up truck. One New Years eve when my husband was working night shift they finished up early and at 02:30 am I drove into city centre to pick him up at work. On the way there, there were about 30 robots and if you caught the first one red, you caught the whole lot. I was in the middle lane and next to me was a car who also had to stop at the robots, the man driving the car saw I was alone and started driving at the same speed trying to catch my eye. Fortunately I knew I had a powerful vehicle and was not perturbed but what he could not see was the huge dog lying on the seat next to me. As I pulled up at another robot, I called her name and she immediately responded by sitting up straight next to me. The poor man's face registered extreme shock at the sight of her head and shoulders. He floored the gas peddle and went through a red robot and turned off at the next one. I was never afraid of night driving as long as she was in the truck or car with me. 😅😆🐕 I read the cartoon strip 'Fred Basset' every day in the 50's and the 60's and fell in love with Fred. When we bought her she was a highly pedigreed Basset with 11 champions featured in her pedigree, but I had her spayed. She could easily have been a show-dog. Her colouring was outstanding as well as all the other features required as per the American Kennel Club. Her ears were like silk and she was brushed three times per week. The moment she saw the brush she would come running, hollow her back and have an expression of absolute bliss as she submitted. She had a bath once a month and having her very own very large bath she would subside in the warm water with her chin on the edge. She savoured every moment of being groomed. They are kleptomaniacs and will walk off with whatever is stolen with most regal walk, tail held high. No scurrying off with a guilty expression. If you should scold them, they turn those exquisite, soulful, brown eyes on you and you end up apologising for having had the audacity to scold them in the first place. I could write a hefty book about my Basset, Gigi.
1 Big misconception. Basset hounds DO need exercise! With how they're built and their obsession with food, giving them enough exercise is so important. Keeping the muscles strong for their joints and keeping them slim!
We keep our bassets trim and lean for their joints and health. It is so shocking how some people react when they see our dogs. They act like we starve them because they are not overweight. Our vet said they are the healthiest bassets he regularly sees. I wish people would take their diet and exercise more seriously
@jillb2298 I have a Basset hound x German shepherd mix, with the build of the Basset and he's also slim. I get asked way too much, if he has lost weight. All I can think is that people are so used to seeing overweight dogs, of any breed, that they think slim and healthy dogs are skinny. Even vets don't always warn people.. my friend's labrador is obese, he's 1 day older than my dog (3 years old), but has the stamina of a senior.. he's always been too thick, but not 1 professional has ever mentioned it to them. Not their vet, nor their trainer.. it's so sad.. he's alzo limping frequently..
We had a basset and 3 daily walks were not enough for him he even chased my parents Labrador all day long until he was exhausted and had pain from tailwagging. These dogs were made to literally follow other animals for hours. Not couch potatoes at all. They have almost undrainable energy.
We have walked our puppy from day one that we got her, 12 weeks. We have 2 basset hounds right behind us that I have never seen on a walk, ever. That's sad to me, their nose needs exercise as much as their body. We now mix up our walks to different places so she can smell new smells. It's very satisfying for her.
I always had loved Bassethounds, but i have had other breeds, mostly active hunting dogs from Shelters, street dogs. But i think now is the time to have a Bassethound, i am not so active anymore and this breed needs a moderate exercise, so i think i can finally have a Bassethound. I have more then 30 years experience with dogs, stubborns ore not, and i feel my house empty without a hairy friend, with the company and those lovely eyes looking at me, steeling my place at the sofa and a wagin tail in my life
We had numerous Basset Hounds. They were very smart hence preferred to do what they wanted. I took our first female to obedience classes. She basically did what you commanded but would “talk about” how she objected to being commanded to sit, stay etc. The naturally obedient breeds were not thrilled by her “editorial comments 😜!
I've had eight bassets (currently have two) and I was surprised that she didn't mention that they shed year round. I have to vacuum constantly just to keep up with their fur that is everywhere. And they do need exercise! All of my hounds were males and as puppies were absolutely wild and didn't calm down till they were 2 years old. I did manage to house break all of them but it did take a while, the quickest was 8 months but most took at least a year. And mine all had the corn chip smell. Both of the ones I have now are 80 lbs each and the oldest thinks he's a tiny lap dog and loves to cuddle.
That also surprised me too…along with the slobber! Ours would give St. Bernards a run for their money with the amount of slobber they made- and all the weird places they’d sling it 😂
Our basset is named Louie, he is sweet, loveable and very smart, he gets up to all sorts of funny things, and he has to always be involved in everything that’s goes on inside the house, if I’m putting furniture together for example, he comes and sits right in the middle of what I’m doing. We wouldn’t get any other breed of dog anymore after owning a basset
Bassets are fantastic. They move really fast. They love their owners to pieces. I had 3 and my one son had 2 and a half. Loved and miss them all. P Drozd
They are the most wonderful breed. So much of this is true. The one thing that got missed was intelligence. Basset Hounds can be very intelligent. My basset has a special intuition and intelligence in her surroundings and with people. Even now, at 14 years old, when she is both blind and deaf, she has a keen sense of what is around her and can adapt to her surroundings very well. I have spent most of her later years making her food at home, primarily with white meat chicken and vegetables. I believe most dogs don't live as long due to processed dog foods. I know it can be more expensive to make fresh food, but it will give you those extra years of companionship and love. And they are so full of both!
My niece just gave us her six-year-old basset hound I'm an experienced dog owner so sweet gentle borderline possessive of me she definitely gets along well with our new puppy and our two cats
My Bassett Elvis just counter surfed in the kitchen and ate 2 partial containers of humous. He's also very fond of potatoes raw or cooked, almost any kind of fruit, cough drops, tissues both used and unused. It's a good thing I really love him a lot. Fortunately I have a doggie door that he's used exclusively since I got him 5 years ago, so we don't have accidents in the house. Love my bassy.
My basset was the most destructive puppy I've ever had. He got into EVERYTHING. Luckily he seems to have mostly grown out of chewing all he comes into contact with. Mostly. Wouldn't trade him for the world, though.
My Bassett is 4 months and only likes to go potty in the grass. He looks me in the eyes and gives me one little bark and I know he needs to go out. I love my pooch!
I have a Bassett Baby and he was easy to housebreaking. I love this breed. Everybody should have one. Great family pet. Very loyal. They are great with kids and other dogs.
They are fabulous dogs, I miss mine so much, cancer took him after 12 years. Also they very much need substantial room to run around for exercise, they will eat themselves into hip and spine problems without enough exercise
@@raylathem3 I know, you're right. It's funny how all the breeds have a certain scent. My weimaraners smell like bacon if they haven't been bathed for a while and my late malanois would smell like a sheep.
We have had a total of 6 bassets over the years. Currently, we have 2 eleven year old brothers. Both exceed 90 lbs. Barney and Floyd. They have me wrapped around their huge paws. Beyond stubborn. Love them almost as much as my wife.
Bassets are absolutely beautiful dogs in every respect ... a great loving family member! Possessing a strong sense of smell doesn't necessarily mean that the little guys possess a strong smell themselves! Yikes! That's a bit of a crazy thing to say about one of the sweetest breeds of dogs.
I've had Goldens, English Bulldogs, and Australian Shepards, and my 10 year old baby boy, Lincoln is my whole heart! He's funny, lazy, smelly, and the very best loving dog I've ever had! As long as you know they are stubborn like a 2 year old, you'll be good! It's totally like having a tot, smart, lazy, stinky, and steels your heart!!!
I had my basset for 13 years and cleaned up after her for all 13 years. How ever she was the sweetest. She never was house broken and she showed her submissiveness by peeing. On the beach she would disappear up to the trash cans at the houses. Faster than any description of the breed. She was a love.
I have had 2 bassets and they never smelled. The most stuborn dog i have ever had. Never totally housebroken . Ate anything and everything. Loved to go on walks hated baths.
Positive reinforcement when potty training is key. I have an 8 week old puppy and he already knows to go outside. Hot dog sausages when training Bassetts is the secret weapon. They will do anything for a hot dog 🌭 😅
After our jack Russel Rockie passed away at fifteen and half we were devastated and said we would never have another dog, the pain of losing him was terrible, then several years later lily a basset hound came into our lives by chance, she was 3 years old, there’s never a day goes by that she doesn’t make us laugh, she will come up and cuddle you , just a little eye contact with her and her tail wags, if your looking for a dog that will snuggle up to you , show you real affection back look at a basset.
I've had two basset hounds, both lemon-colored. Hilda (she who must be obeyed) and Milo. I miss them both terribly. They can be stubborn, but as long as you are aware of it. it doesn't seem so bad. Milo did have a "semi" dry mouth. The only issue was his water bowl. After he drank from it, there was this primordial goo across the top of it. The cats would look at and say "I'm not drinking out of that." Hence their water bowl was up on their own counter. Hilda came from a basset rescue league. Apparently her former owner used to toss popcorn for her to catch. The first time we sat down with a bowl of popcorn we could not figure why she was sitting in front of us waiting for something. Then there was the time we had just bought a house. The property insurance agent wasn't going to write a policy because he thought Hilda was a Rottweiler. She sure fooled him. If you need a class clown to enliven the household, bassets are the way to go.
SUPPOSEDLY, they tend to wander off and run away, but not a one of my last 4 basset hounds could be dragged off my property. You could leave the gate open and they wouldn’t leave for any reason. I just got 2 8 week old bassets last week. After all the other ones were spayed, they stayed glued to me. I hope these 2 little girls I just got will be the same way. As far as toilet training goes, these 2 little ones came to me already pee pad trained and have had very few accidents. In one week, they are now doing their business outside most of the time now and when they don’t, it is on the pads. These are great dogs.
My sister has a hunbting basset, with longer legs and speedier. There are breeders that raise longer-legged, hunting bassets as opposed to the standard show bassets.
Nice vid, but incorrect on some things. The odor, specifically the smell of corn chips, I call the Frito Feet is caused by a fungus called pseudomonas. It’s harmless and you’ll harm the dog if you try to permanently get rid of it….it’s just a Bassett thing. I’ve never had a problem potty training, I guess I got lucky. My last BH was a true hunter, she world mess with the alligators in our area. She’d run around them and then jump off of their backs….she was insane. As for apartment living, yes, they do great exercise wise, but your neighbors may not appreciate when they sing. PLEASE don’t use bark collars on them, babies cry, Bassetts bay, fact of life. You can train them to reduce the baying, but consistency is key. They are very smart…..my analogy….they are like politicians, they can do just about anything, they just don’t have the desire and what can you do for me?
My Bassett doesn't smell bad except when he's farted. He sheds a lot of hair, but he always smells fresh and clean, even though I never give him a bath. He weighs 33 kg, and I am old. That means he's big enough to clean himself, and he does a wonderful job of it!
i was walking ROSEY and saw a rabbit standing there , look Rose but she didn't see so i turned and then she caught sent and she took off running and yellping but the rabbit gave her the slip. basset hounds are great rabbit hunters
Ours would steal washcloths and ate a whole ham once. We went on a hike once and when they’d gone far enough they stopped. We had to get the car to pick them up. Good guard dogs no yapping.
i had a bassite hound growing up she was great dog she used to love to eat grapfruit was not in room she would smell it go find it and sit at dads feet tell he gave her grapefruit i also teached her to situp right on her back legs
when i was a kid i teached my my bassett hound to sit up on her back legs also my dog used to like to eat grapfruit she would not be in the room my dad would take a yellow grapfruit and start to peel it wear ever my dog was she would smell the grapfruit and run and sit at my dads feet until he shared his grapfruit with her
I just got basset puppies number 5 and 6 last week. People think bassets are lazy, but they are not. They are very active puppies, but are the sweetest dogs on earth.
I have owned and bread 2 to 4 Bassets for 30 years. Correction, you don't own a Basset it's more of a coexistence. For potty training a fenced yard and a doggy door and it's instantaneous. How would you like to wake up and wait for someone to open the bathroom door? I had a male Basset that lived 2 weeks shy of 22 years old. They are the best PTSD drug I have ever used.
5:15 What? Dechants? Dackel, Teckel, Dachshund or even Badgerdogs or Wienerdogs. But Dechants?! Come on. Try this pronunciation: "Dax-Hound" for "Dachshund" Tackle for Teckel and with a smooth "D" instead of a "T" it will sound like "Dackel" Dechants ... sounds like some french pastry.
I've had two basset hounds a few years apart from each other and there is no mistake about the stubbornness with housebreaking the amazing nose and the comical cuddly nature. Couple stories below. My first basset hound I guess you would say American Bassett smelt the spot on the carpet after several cleanings where a family cat had passed 2 years prior decided to chew a hole in the carpet. Replace the carpet got another basset hound should have done that the other way around because the second basset hound which is half English basset much larger than the first more shar pei with the loose skin and wrinkles and one of the softest coats I've ever snuggled with at night. This dog decided 9 months in to the new carpet that he was going to peel it up from the threshold and chew a whole lot of it. It took moments minutes and we only caught him because of the fact he disappeared for a couple minutes which meant he was up to something. So keep your basset exercise a tired dog is a good dog and a happy dog. The best part is those little legs don't need to go far for that dog to be worn out and ready for an 8 hour nap. The last thing I'll say is I never thought I would not be a boxer guy I've had really good luck with some amazing boxer and boxer pit mixes and I am in love with the basset hound goofy smart mischievous is all hell. Our second basset even figured out that if he went to the bathroom on the floor even if he had just come in that someone would clean it up right away and when food was getting cooked or set out and people are fixing plates he would go to the living room go to the bathroom for someone would see him then the commotion would ensue to get the carpet cleaner and get spot cleaned up and while that was happening you would have the opportunity to steal food. He did it way too many times almost on cue to be coincidence
Our bassets loved having their ears cleaned. Someone giving them lots of attention. Just use cotton swabs, a little peroxide to dip them in, and a headlamp. they will love you forever, and the smell will be greatly diminished.
House training was easy after teaching my basset the definition of inside and outside. After struggling for about 4 weeks, it was resolved in 3 days, training in the door opening to the garden.
Forgot to mention the underlying truth, they love to eat into socks, clothes, pillow stuffing, heck even their own beds at times. (Still amazing, highly recommend)
What they always say about Bassets is they make excellent Guard Dogs (they have a very loud bark, and will bark at anything that is unusual to them), but they make terrible Protection Dogs (because they love everyone - even intruders!).
Bassett are loving little clowns. But, whoever owns one must have patience with them. They do need to exercise and they will follow a scent by nature so don't get angry with them and punish them for trailing a scent, you need to be responsible and take care with them.
Their ears cause the smell. If you learn to clean their ears properly and bathe your dog, no smell. There’s no smell from slobber unless there’s a problem. Take care of your dog.
I have a tri-color. He's incredibly stubborn but his version of stubborn is not wanting to do anything. When he "runs away" he doesn't get far because he's too lazy. And he's the most lovey dovey little bugger on the planet!
Best family dogs ever. Laid back, loving clowns, and loyal, they are a beautiful breed.

My girl is sweetly the boss too...
Our Archibald was an affectionate son of gun!
They are not stubborn they are just not retrievers
i just brought one and i like it we love our dog manchita
My last apartment complex specifically prohibited Bassett Hounds. When I asked why, they said it was because of the baying.
Raised a basset from pup till passing. They always thinkin...
My sister has a hunbting basset, with longer legs and speedier. There are breeders that raise longer-legged, hunting bassets as opposed to the standard show bassets.
I bread hunting Bassets for 25 years. We are all retired now. They can really fly if they want to.
If you can handle the snot and slobber, you’ve got a loyal, lovable, comical friend for life. I miss mine. 😢
You’ll never miss a smell more than that Basset Smell after it’s gone 😢
They're not a "good" family dog....they're a GREAT family dog!!!
Lord my Basset stinks after a week post bath!! He loves hiking, and it was sooooo difficult to potty train him. He is incredibly stubborn.
I have had 2 bassets. Little known fact: they are the world’s most fearsome land predators.🥴
i had a bassite hound growing up she was great dog she used to love to eat grapfruit was not in room she would smell it go find it and sit at dads feet tell he gave her grapefruit i also teached her to situp right on her back legs
I have a Bassett hound
when i was a kid i teached my my bassett hound to sit up on her back legs
also my dog used to like to eat grapfruit she would not be in the room my dad would take a yellow grapfruit and start to peel it wear ever my dog was she would smell the grapfruit and run and sit at my dads feet until he shared his grapfruit with her
House breaking has been an issue for sure.
I’m currently pregnant, should we wait to get a basset until the baby is older?
We just got a basset hound.. oh my goodness he is so hyper I don't know what to do.?🤷
I just got basset puppies number 5 and 6 last week. People think bassets are lazy, but they are not. They are very active puppies, but are the sweetest dogs on earth.
Yep. Ditto
Love my basset name is louie
They are handsome dogs, and good natured. The reason I will never have one though is because they slobber.
Where did you get that info? My basset hound doesn't stink, as well as the breeder's pack
I love my girls' smell. Especially when they're asleep.
What is a Dishand?
5:15 What? Dechants? Dackel, Teckel, Dachshund or even Badgerdogs or Wienerdogs. But Dechants?! Come on.
Try this pronunciation:
"Dax-Hound" for "Dachshund"
Tackle for Teckel and with a smooth "D" instead of a "T" it will sound like "Dackel"
Dechants ... sounds like some french pastry.
Please do the Old English Sheepdog
Ear wax and sweat 😅 😂
Our bassets loved having their ears cleaned. Someone giving them lots of attention. Just use cotton swabs, a little peroxide to dip them in, and a headlamp. they will love you forever, and the smell will be greatly diminished.
Basset hounds smell like corn chips. That's the best way I can describe it.
My Dad used to say it looks like they’re standing in a hole. Ours liked vegetables and fruit. We had five.
🐶❤️
💙
What they always say about Bassets is they make excellent Guard Dogs (they have a very loud bark, and will bark at anything that is unusual to them), but they make terrible Protection Dogs (because they love everyone - even intruders!).
You need a fenced yard or a bassett will get a scent and follow it forever
i have never lived with a stubborn basset hound. they are basset hounds. they do basset hound things.
Bassett are loving little clowns. But, whoever owns one must have patience with them. They do need to exercise and they will follow a scent by nature so don't get angry with them and punish them for trailing a scent, you need to be responsible and take care with them.
como es posible que esta raza y este canal no tenga vistas gente disenteresada que no le importan los animales
deshawn
Forgot to mention that they like rolling in poop
And eating it
The best lovable dog one could have. The one bad thing they get are TUMORS.
Fritos, they smell like Fritos
PLEASE learn to brush your dog's teeth, it will improve their lifespan and quality of life.
Their ears cause the smell. If you learn to clean their ears properly and bathe your dog, no smell. There’s no smell from slobber unless there’s a problem. Take care of your dog.
" Subtle " is pronounced " suttle ".
Just saying.
This is AI reading...
You made basset hounds sound like they smell bad regular brushing and wipes keep them as smelly as any other dog that frolicked outdoors.
