We have a baby gate we kept up for our Doberman. I'd never trust a smaller dog on stairs and I barely trust my big dog on them. Granted, they're pretty steep, steeper than the ones in this video, but still. Stairs are no joke. A human could get injured walking up them wrong.
The doxie falling downstairs is a good example of how this breed ends up paralyzed. I’ve known a few through the years that ended up with broken spines from falling from the couch and stairs.
Very true. At one time, I was the proud parent of four dachshunds (all bred by a family friend who likely shouldn't have bred them). They were wonderful - three sisters and one brother - but they were very unhealthy. Long story short, over their lifetimes, we ended up having to have NINE back surgeries performed across the four dogs! We had small stairs they could use to get up on the couch and beds and carried them downstairs to go outside as much as possible, yet it still happened. Poor breeding and genetics, I think, but I still love the breed and probably will always have a dachshund in my life, despite the health problems.

Dachshunds doesn't know they are small or cute. That is the first thing you should know about them. Dachshunds bred for hunting are often extremely stubborn, brave and often aggressive against other dogs and strangers who intrude on "their" turf. (I live in a part of Europe where Dachshunds are popular hunting dogs. I haven't met an American bred Dachshund but from videos, they seem to be smaller and more docile) They are also playful, loyal and make absolutely wonderful as companions, but you should treat them the way you would treat a large powerful dog, or they will rule you.

I guess i need to remove mine then. We have housed 2 dachshunds and neither have hurt themselfs on the stairs. One died of cancer and other is still with me and shes 9
I cannot stress enough what the dachshund did with the moose. I saw that video in many social media platforms, and I always comment the same. The dog put himself in danger to draw the moose attention away from his owner. Is not randomly doing dumb stuff. Is smart and brave enough (like most dachshunds) to do that on purpose.

Our little kiddo had a herniated disc at 4 years of age. $7000 later, he recovered beautifully. He didn't have any kind of accident, but when left at home alone, he's in his crate. Thankfully, having pet insurance, they paid half. He will be 8 years old in November and you'd never know that he ever had a problem

Put a dog gate on those steps, and carry the dog up, and down when needed. Doxies are highly susceptible to IVDD.
