@@markhiggins8315 Yes, When they (Kenny and Gary)were both Younger I never would have confused them, their voices used to be very different. No raspy-ness in Gary Brooker's younger voice, and as You say Gary's phasing is behind the beat, and very soulful. I have performed this song many times, and it is really difficult to sing with the kind of feeling and phrasing, that Gary puts into it. How apt that You compare Gary's voice to Ray Charles, piercing, very soulful, with those bluesy pitch figurations on the tailing off of notes, and almost more heartfelt in the reserved delivery. Gary Brooker wrote and recorded this song in 1967..I was 18 when this came out....He sounds even better now than he did back then. Took me back 54 years.
I was only 14 years old when the original version was released on 45rpm vinyl. This song has haunted me since then and like you, it brought me to tears and still does every time I hear it. The orchestral arrangement is better than the original as Gary's voice has matured and mellowed since 1967. If anyone can listen to this song and not be emotionally touched, they have no soul. I'm so glad you reacted the way you did, so I have subscribed to your channel. This was recorded at an outdoor music festival in Copenhagen in Denmark. Here are the lyrics so you can better understand the song. We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason' And the truth is plain to see But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as well've been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale
I love this arrangement of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". I played it more times than I can remember back in the 70s and 80s. I was a B3 Hammond Organ player and sang the song as well. A real rock classic that will never die. Thank you for "reacting" to this beautiful song. Always touching to watch a music lover react.

This song was originally recorded in England early in 1967. What you're watching is a "classical" interpretation of the popular rock version. The man playing the piano is Gary Brooker, the song's composer. Procol Harum was Gary's band. The band was virtually unknown in America when the song was released during the summer of 1967. Almost overnight, the song became hugely popular. Here we are 54 years later and "Whiter Shade of Pale" remains one of the most beloved rock songs of all time. The original song/video are available here on TH-cam...at nearly 3 million views, it continues to recall longtime fans and attract new ones by the hour. This song is a classic that I have been enjoying on local FM rock radio stations for over 50 years. I had this in my record collection as a very young man. (I am 61 now). Another classic Procul Harum song is CONQUISTADOR , the album version, because it also was recorded live with a full orchestra, the Edmonton symphony orchestra, from Alberta, Western Canada, where I was born and live. Conquistador is an EPIC song. Very theatrical.

1967 , I was at the music store and I saw this green album ' Shine On Brightly ' and thought " that's interesting " I was about 4 yrs into the rock music , played guitar in a band , thought I knew all the bands , but I didn't know this one . Took it home , put on side #1 . Pretty good songs . Turned it over to side #2 . Holy Crap !!! It was an amazing overture !!! ' In Held Twas In I ' In 1970 , Procol Harum played with Edmunton Symphony Orchestra . Fantastic songs !!! Plus they did the overture In Held Twas in I . They put it out as a live album . It was a classic album . Tried this yrs later , didn't work so well . Then 2006 this in Denmark , remarkable to say the least .
Procol Harum (you pronounced it correctly) is not a guy, but a 1960s British rock group. The lead singer and only original surviving member is Gary Brooker. And yes, he has an amazing voice. When this song was first a hit in 1967, it was released without the symphony orchestra arrangement, which was done specifically for this outdoor concert. The Hammond B3 organ was the main feature of the original arrangement played by the band, whereas the organ doesn't appear in the song here until the second verse. Procol Harum didn't really have that many hit singles. The only other single they released that had much chart success here in America was "Conquistidor" (1972), which they also performed at this same 2006 concert. It can also be found on TH-cam (and it's excellent as well). Conquistidor WAS originally released with the symphony backing track. And no, this was not a wedding. Just an outdoor concert in Denmark. Gary was 61 at the time of this performance. He's still around some 15 years later, still performing, still sounding like a million bucks. Search around and you'll find a lot of interviews with him talking about this song and its origins. I was touched by the tears streaming down your face during this song. I've never really thought of the song as being particularly sad, although the arrangement certainly makes it seems so. It's a classic girl-leaves-boy story. Pretty run of the mill stuff, as songs go. But the the construction of the lyrics and the arrangement (particularly this arrangement with the combination of the Hammond B3 organ, the symphony orchestra, and the choir) is such that it goes to prove how music in all its glorious power can captivate and send us off to mysterious and wondrous places. Here are the lyrics: We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, "There is no reason" And the truth is plain to see But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might just as well've been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale
Even though I don't think I used to cry when I heard it on the radio, it always had a deeply mysterious and melancholy feel to it for me. And always affected me quite a lot. And like you said, this arrangement takes it to an even deeper and ethereal level that really hits my heart more than ever. If you really want to settle back and absorb the atmosphere of this song, then this is the version.
This first came out in 1967 when I was 12. I'm 66 now so they must be in their 70s. Still in great voice. Always a wonderful song, I still remember every word of it. It's especially lovely with the orchestra.
Procal Harum was a British rock band formed in 1967. I was in high school in the U.S. when they released this song. It's amazing that at his age, Gary Booker's voice is still so soulful and dynamic. P.H. was one of my favorite bands in the late 1960s. Still love them today, and this live orchestrated version is phenomenal. B
Yes, his voice is very emotional and overwhelms you while listening. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and love it even more with this version.
Procol harum is a famous 4 member band from the 1960`s . The singer is Gary Booker and sounds very much like when this song first came out. They made many albums. One of the original members was Robin Trower
Maureen.... Gary Brooker was 60 when this was recorded. Procal Harum sold more than 10 million recordings of this song. Some, including me, this it's the greatest rock ballad ever.
Thanks for a great reaction 😀👍the whole concert with Procol Harum took place in Lejre in Ledreborg castle park (Denmark). There several songs with him including “Grand Hotel” “Homburg”
Thank you so much for doing this! Loved your reaction. This is a beautiful version of their 1967 hit. My favorite song at that time. Procol Harum was a British rock band. Gary Brooker is the lead singer.
Your heartfelt reaction to this song is a fitting tribute to the greatness of Gary Brooker, and as a fan since 1967 it was wonderful to see.Since he past away recently seeing your reaction was especially moving, not only do you look beautiful but you have a Beautiful heart too
You pronounced right and i don't know of any others from them. It is one of my top favorites but it is the the original that I hear in my mind and play. re: a whiter shade of pale
PROCOL HAREM, "WHITER SHADE OF PALE". LATE ENGLISH BAND WHEN THIS SONG CAME OUT. THEIR IS AN A VERSION WHEN HIS BAND WAS AROUND 20...YEARS OLD... MORE GROUP CALLED TEN YEARS AFTER ALSO FROM BRITAIN AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME.. SONG IS "I'D LOVE TOO CHANGE THE WORLD"...
Procol Harum was the idea ( brainchild ) of Gary Brooker , singer & Keith Reed , lyricist . Started 1967 . My favorites by Procol Harum are Conquistador ' Denmark , Hotel Grand ' Denmark. ,. Salty Dog ' Denmark. , Repent Walpurgis ' old live studio version , In Held Twas In I. , 1968 green album , long overture. , my absolute favorite .
How nice to see a young and beautiful girl raving about classic rock. This tells us that good music stands the test of time. Indeed, I, who have heard this piece live twenty-odd times, still realize that I am dealing with a work of art. A great song, Brooker's unique voice, great band and orchestra (arrangements by the leader Procol Harum himself). I found beautiful words on the Internet about Brooker, who died last year, by Ian Paice from Deep Purple.
Nearly saw them one night in Cambridge, 1967ish but they had to cancel due to exhaustion. Replacement group was Jeff Beck with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart - not a bad replacement!!
Thank you for your understanding. If we understand nature (animals and plants). If we have not lost touch with the earth (your mother). With your roots - your mother! Greetings from Estonia - keep your culture and music. Be healthy my dear-dear ones
Maureen I just love your beautiful heart, that shines through so well. Procol Harum are a British group from the 1960s that everyone I knew back then and through the 70s onwards loved. It's so wonderful that you are discovering them now, and what better way than with this concert. Keep shining, this world needs lovely people like you.
Love your reaction, I would love to see your reaction to STEVE VAI, one of the top ten guitarists of all time, the king of the instrumental, smooth goosebumps! , You've got to see TENDER SURRENDER (SteveVaiHimself) can't wait to see your face, get ready for the goosebumps. Best wishes from north east England.

Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason'
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Here are the lyrics:
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "There is no reason"
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well've been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Witnessing human excellence can be emotional.
not many songs will evoke a tear , but this one does, everytime, much like bagpipes do at a funeral.

I loved your emotional reaction to this classic song 🙏❤
Am humbled ❤️
Nearly saw them one night in Cambridge, 1967ish but they had to cancel due to exhaustion. Replacement group was Jeff Beck with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart - not a bad replacement!!
Thank you for your understanding. If we understand nature (animals and plants). If we have not lost touch with the earth (your mother). With your roots - your mother! Greetings from Estonia - keep your culture and music. Be healthy my dear-dear ones
Thank you , young lady, for allowing us to see your honest reaction to a truly great piece of music.

Yes, the world is a better place because of you. I'm glad I discovered you on here
