The type of music us old farts listened to in 1967. Gary didn't figure it would have been as popular as it turned out. He figured maybe 10 years it would have run it's course, but was surprised when the younger audiences kept asking for it. As soon as Gary started singing, I watched your eyes open wide, I knew you got it.
I was 10 when this first became a hit record in 1967... this 2006 version is so epic, every time I play it it brings me to tears for its sheer beauty and the amazing arrangements for the orchestra and choir. This song has classical roots, and Gary Brooker never made it a secret that is was inspired by and based on a passage from Suite nr 3 in D-Major by Johan Sebastian Bach.. Additionally this was the favourite song of Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, in USA foremost known and awarded because of the Natalee Holloway case. This song he played every day. Peter was assassinated and shot in Amsterdam 6th July 2021 and died on the 15th as a result of this. During his funeral (public) this song as also played.
I have listened to this hundreds if not thousands of times over fifty odd years and it still moves me emotionally and soulfully in all that time I have listened to all types of music and only a handful of musical compositions would I regard as my favourite this is most definitely in the top five fabulous beautiful piece of musical genius I am so lucky to have been born in 1949 and experienced some incredible musical talent I could not exist without my music great reaction thank you
Did you feel that soft velvet tone reach inside your soul and touch your essence? I sure enjoyed watching a young beautiful woman feel the emotions that once befell upon the old people when we were once young and beautiful. too. This will forever live with you ,.. and nothing you can ever do will make you un-hear such emotions.
Wonderful voice and performance, worthy of the grandeur of an orchestra... I was hoping for that iconic organ to feature..and when it kicked in, boy it was 1967 again and I swallowed hard.....
When I first heard this song in 1967, it affected me in just the same way. This performance, however, is even greater than the recorded one from way back then.
Loved your enthusiastic reaction to this classic anthem from another era. We all had the same reaction, back in 1967. I never tire of this version, recorded in Denmark. What a classic performance!!
Every reaction on this video on this video has always been very very positive I have seen quite a few by know and everyone is blown away by this classic performance.
I won't pretend to know what this song is about, but I really don't have to ..... I am still blown away by the lyrical imagery and the emotional magnificence of this performance ..... overwhelming ..... Gary Brooker is a miracle
The original version of this song was a No 1 hit in the UK in May 1967. The vocalist Gary Brooker must be around 60/61 here. The whole concert is majestic. I bought the DVD of it when it came out and I watch it regularly. The band has released many terrific albums over the years.
@@juanitadiemer64 This concert was 2006. Go back 39 years from then to 1967. Subtract 39 from him being 61 at the time of this concert which makes him 22 in 1967. He was born in 1945.
We are ALL hit by this thunderclap of a question, from the first note, "can you trust me to romance you?" "I will not take from you, nor hurt you, but will fill your heart with hope." As the passion increases we are pressed for an answer; this is VERY frightening. We cannot hide our heart from this lover, we have already let him in.
the lyrics contain a considerable amount of period context. in this case psycodelic way. Mixed emotions than one used to feel on the occasion of a first meeting between a boy and a girl. nervousness expectations, shame, desire to be reciprocated. I don't know if it's still like that today... but at that time it was exactly how we felt. the music brings all these sensations back to those who lived and was young in that time.
Lovely to see your reaction, wonder why I cry every single time I hear it, and I have watched a lot of reactions to it, some not as good as yours I must say.
Thank you for your wonderful reaction to this majestic classic from Procol Harum!! If you enjoy live performances may I offer a few suggestions for you to react to one day? "Love Of My Life" by Queen at Wembley Stadium 1986, "Battle of Evermore" by Heart 1995, "Vincent" by Don McLean 1972, "Old Man" by Neil Young 1971, "Why" by Annie Lennox in 2000, "One Less Bell To Answer" by The Fifth Dimension 1971, and "Lucretia MacEvil" by Blood Sweat and Tears 1975! Keep up the great work on your channel!!!!
🤔…..Great reaction video! 👍First time viewer here (just might have to subscribe if you do more of this quality). I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did cartwheels across the floor, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast, becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I have heard, but I cannot confirm, that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never recorded. We will probably never hear the end of that story. Again, I want to say your reaction video was wonderful and genuine. Well done.
Great song and lovely reaction. This is one of the best live performances of all time. Another great one is Boney M (live at Sopot Festival) singing “Rivers of Babylon”. ✌️
Nothing is better than the original. A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum) 1967 with lyric th-cam.com/video/_BADDeIQWVQ/w-d-xo.html. if you don't remark about the haunting sound of the organ then you have truly missed what made it iconic. it really stands out in the original but is over shadowed by the orchestra and the choir.

I hope the people there are aware of how lucky they were to lay witness to that epically immortal timeless piece of beauty,

Few songs I can say are approaching Divine Perfection, but this is ONE!

Each time you hear this, it is like the first time you have heard it. It is a pure classic, a masterpiece in musical genius.

Why shouldn't they? Music is timeless, no matter what some idiots say, and this made twice as timeless by this arrangement..
Wonderful voice and performance, worthy of the grandeur of an orchestra... I was hoping for that iconic organ to feature..and when it kicked in, boy it was 1967 again and I swallowed hard.....

The song does have a 3rd and 4th verse. The band's name was named after a breed of cat.
Hi, hey play Nights in White Satin, by the Moody Blues, they sang it first back in 1967, but play the later version
