There’s a place for the longer videos, but I totally agree that short and to the point is often better. If you’ve got 10 minutes of content that’s going to be valuable go ahead and put it out there, but if 9 minutes of it is filler just so you can have a longer video… But these are things we learn as we go. I’ve been guilty of adding pointless filler to videos myself in the past. 😇
@@BasenjiAdventures yeah it's easy to do lol. I haven't made many videos, and the ones I have done are deleted. But when I send videos to friends that I made or when I just explain stuff it's always too long

Years ago my Mom was a breeder. The girls were in heat & our "old man" was out back. He started making the Air Raid sound & we both met at the back door. He had held it forever! I always thought he was saying, "Please, let me have one of the ladies!!"

I know this is late. I rescued a Basenj terrier mix last year. It has a bark but it's the weirdest sound. It's ridiculously loud but flat like hitting a big book off a desk, Her growing is almost rattling. Tail is long and half curled but will coil when super alert. She is a orange white colour her brothers were black and tan.
Love her but it was hard going with training. Hated the lead but loves it now and they chew the hell out of everything.
That definitely sounds like an interesting mix. So awesome that you rescued! 😄

Thank you so much. It was a very sad time losing Ginger Snap because it was due to Fanconi syndrome and she passed at only five years. However, Zinga and Zulu are wonderful pups, even though they don’t yodel. I’m glad you found our channel, and hope you enjoy our current videos as much as you do the ones from the past. 🙂
@@BasenjiAdventures I wish I could express my dismay at finding that Fanconi syndrome is cross species, and your sweet little girl passed from it at such a young age.
I'm definitely going to keep enjoying your content from the past to the present. She and Graham Cracker seemed wonderful, and I look forward to watching Zenga and Zulu. (I just saw a short of Daddy giving Zulu loves, and how beautifully Zulu was posed).
As for yodelling, meh. Not ALL Basenjis have to yodel to be awesome. Just like not all Pitties HAVE to give that smile or, ALL Malinois have to know Parkour, lol!😂😂

My ears unfortunately cannot sustain dog barks or yodels since they give me anxiety, but I absolutely love watching videos of this dog. So so communicative. I wish I didn’t have my phonophobia, or else I would get this dog in a heartbeat.
Ginger and Graham were vocal, but as I showed at the end, our current two, Zinga and Zulu aren't, so they may still be a great breed for you. :o)

It totally depends on the dog. We had Ginger and Graham, who both made noise, but when we got Zinga and Zulu we discovered that they were quiet. I don’t think they make the barooing sound for no reason at all. With Ginger and Graham it was mostly when we encouraged it, or they were extremely excited. But that’s the only reference point I have, so you’ll probably want to ask other Basenji owners what their experience has been. 😊

My dog is basenji soo cuteeee😍😍😍 trick color
I have a three legged white third gen Basenji Boxer mix named Yuki to my old girl Sunny she was a Basenji who passed away years back. Sunny wasn’t purebred but she had strong Basenji features just with longer fur. Sunny never barked she only howled or yap once an awhile but never an actual bark. She was very docile but only wanted to be with me and no one else she was very attached to me she had a litter of five female pups (Bella,Zoe,Angel,Daisy, and Rose) with the neighbors full blooded show boxer named spike who “hopped the fence”
Rose was my dog she grew to be at big as spike and was muscular like him but had all of Sunny’s features
She was very playful unlike sunny who didn’t like games and didn’t like being alone she was a BRIGHT red brindle with the same white markings as sunny
It was about a year after sunny passed and Rose was stolen that My aunt told me Daisy had puppies and would like for me to have one that’s when my Yuki-Onna and I met she was all white with a light tan patch over her eye she’s my everything though she had two and a half part boxer she retained the strong features of a full basenji just being much taller she can surely BARK very much so without a doubt she is very playful with our other dog Clyde but not so much Jeli and Rooster and can be playful with me or my dad sometimes other than that she is very much a spoiled diva and pre Madonna

Basenji’s make great pets
They have strong genes regardless of how different they may be mixed with
Please be kind to your pets though they may only be a part of your life
You are their whole life
please spay and neuter your pets their are so many puppies and dogs who have nobody to love and are beaten killed and abused
A lot one people don’t want shelter dogs because they think “they’re too much work” but please make it an option before buying from a breeder just for looks all pets are important and deserve safety and a loving home

No. Basenjis are barkless. There is the occasional one that can bark but it is definitely the exception to the rule. 😁
When you tube this breed cuz you think your dog is part cat 🤫🫢🤣🤣🤣 I think he is mixed but he almost sounds like this. He talks back me to me too lol 😂

Heheh, no, that was the sound fading out while she was still going. But it wouldn't surprise me if a Basenji did meow like a cat! 😂
@@BasenjiAdventures Aha! I see. It really sounded like a meow 😂 My friend had a Basenji and she trained him to do the air siren on command. So whenever scammers or telemarketers would call her, she'd set the dog off resulting in absolute confusion on the other end of the line 😂

Basenji looks so very similar to Indian Pariah Dog. Besides the fact that they don't bark, it would be difficult to differentiate between the two.

My basenji howled exactly one time in 11 years, before we lost him to liver failure. He whined but never chortled, barked, growled, or make any other chatty sounds. I still miss him.

Yep I never get over losing any of my Basenjis have bred and sowed them since 1981. Retired from ring but still have my boys. Life without a Basenjis at your side lacks meaning to me ❤️❤️

@@BasenjiAdventures I've grown up or had family raise 7 basenjis, and all were different. Its a really cool thing to hear. Never had a loud one, and only a few "garoo'd". But that could be due to most being rescue dogs.

When I was a kid I was in a pet store in the 70’s and I saw a Basenji for the first time. They let me take him in the playroom, he got excited playing and yodeled. Freaked me and the clerk both out, neither one of us knew they did that!! 😹😹

Sweet! Our tri-color girl, Sheba was really quiet but tried to bark. We would get one little bark and that was it.
Beautiful! I always shake my head when people talk about the basenji being a quiet dog. Yes, they can be, but that should NEVER be the reason to get one, and you can easily get neighbor complaints if you have a noisy basenji in an apartment, just like you can with any other breed. A quiet basenji puppy can grow up to be screamer, a howler, a crier or a combination of the three.
Very true. However I’ve never known one to make noise just for the sake of making noise. 🤗 Until you leave them alone for the first time - then all bets are off. 🤣

That being said, I would look at mastiff/bully breeds over a basenji if sound was a huge issue due to my living conditions.
@taylorbreckenridge6390 my Rhodesian Ridgebacks have always been extremely quiet. In my apartment, our girl only barked if someone knocked on the door, then stopped immediately when she confirmed that I was aware 😂 They are willful and independent like Basenjis. Both are African dogs
Pity, I've got tinnitus thanks to barking neighbors' dogs, can't stand even barking on tv. I'm fine with howling, often felt myself like howling, dreamed about Tibetan mastiff to bark few times and stop them. Owners were 'deaf', one narcissistic.

The howling at the end. Our neigbor who lives above us has a Basenji, and she will howl like this when her owner leaves.
That’s usually caused by separation anxiety. Do you know how long she’s had her Basenji? Ours did that at the beginning, but once they got used to the home and being alone they didn’t do it anymore.
Since dogs experience much of the world with their sense of smell, here is a way to help your pet to deal with separation anxiety.
Wear a T shirt or some other piece of clothing that you don't mind if it gets ruined. Wear it for at least 3 hours before leaving the house without your pet. Wearing it to bed overnight is best, if you can. I wore mine when I went running or working out. Put the T shirt somewhere that the dog has access to. Your scent will be a great comfort to your dog. In addition, leaving a radio or TV on while you're gone helps a bit, too.
Did you ever wonder if dogs can tell time? They seem to know when certain people will be home soon & wait at the door or watch, through a window. Each individual smells different to a dog. Each person's scent is all over the home. When a person leaves the home, to go to work, for example, their scent begins to fade. When the persons scent is at a certain stage of fading, then they come home, the dog knows when to expect the person back by the strength of the scent.

They absolutely can tell time! Just about every day at 4:55 PM our Zulu will come in with that looks saying it’s dinner time. 😂

Radar makes ALL those sounds + he can bark! A noisi boi. The funny "yo-o-wf" yawning sound makes me laugh. He does that a lot when he wants attention. And he can ba-roo! He only barks when he gets super EXCITED, like when someone strange walks past on the sidewalk or he sees his arch nemesis, the SQUIRREL
Ginger had a warning/startle bark. It was hilarious. If someone knocked on our door sometimes it would startle her and we’d get one loud bark. 😂

Grew up with basenjis and love them so much. I miss my bb (gone over the rainbow bridge long time ago) so ofc I clicked. We used to wind him up something awful, just to get him to howl until mum got mad lol My parents had basenjis right up until about 5-10 years ago. (now, my mum has a crazy little chihuahua mix rescue who doesn't like anyone but mum. And me, apparently. 🤷)

That’s funny. Is he a pure Basenji? I have met one pure Basenji that barked so it is possible, but often times it’s because they’re a mix. 🤗
@@BasenjiAdventures He is 100% Basenji. I do have a doggy daycare, so at any given time he's around 10 dogs that bark throughout the day. Maybe he's just mimicking what he hears?
Could be that. The one I met that barked was somehow more "African". I don't recall the specifics, but probably bred from a line out of Africa or something like that. Maybe that's the case with yours?
They were believed to be able to communicate with gods by ancient Egyptians.. pharaoh's fav dog breed.
