    The part of the video where you are in the big Aqua rocker knitting away looking peaceful is my fav. Plus, Arkansas is boo-tee-ful!! Now for my traveling knitting tip and tale. Since I fly out of Boston and the TSA process there is not one for the timid, I learned to place all of my knitting toys in a clear bag. Not only will it make the TSA agents job easier it can also be a conversation starter and you get to bond with someone and brighten their day. While I was on route to New Mexico, (one of my favorite places to knit in the world) a passenger, who sat next to me, had extreme flight anxiety. Well this gentleman saw me knitting and he asked if I could knit the entire flight due to the clicking sound of the needles was keeping him calm. I eagerly obliged. So for the entire flight I clicked away, finished the Candy Spun Shawl of Chandi's while he was soothed the entire flight. There is lots of power in our fiber fun!

    Security in Cozumel made me throw my Addi Turbo needles away! A lady in our group said Greece security made her. Tip.. always have a self addressed envelop large enough to mail your needles home in. I could have bought stamps at the airport.

    One tip I have is a basic tip for whenever but especially for traveling ! Always place a stitch marker where you stop your project at the time ! Something can happen where something pulls the yarn and you lose your spot !

    • @abbynormal4740
      @abbynormal4740 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great tip! I do that too :-) Now I use the stitch markers with clips to hang tags. When placing the marker, I attach a note with where I left off and where to resume on the pattern.

    I travel all the time for work (I'm a seafarer) and my kit of interchangeable circular needles is absolutely indispensable. They're so compact yet versatile. Being able to remove the needles and carry the project on just a cable means it can be safely rolled up and put in my bag with no fuss. I also use a stitch cutter to cut my yarn, rather than scissors.

    If you're traveling to visit family or anywhere there are young children (maybe 5 and up), take a little bit of extra yarn and a larger circ needle. If you are working at a casual family gathering, the child is likely to be intrigued by what you're doing. Having the extra supplies will allow you to teach the child without having to use your own project as a teaching aid. I learned the hard way.

    Watching this as I prepare for my first ever knitting retreat! My favorite tip is to have a self addressed prepaid flat rate envelope just in case TSA wants to confiscate your stuff. You can always check your bag, but I have heard horror stories about TSA taking knitting projects so having an envelope you can just seal up and give to TSA for mailing means you save your project and your materials

    I went on a holiday in December and had no problem taking my needles on the plane.
    However, on my return I read that they don't allow needles so I kept them in my check-in baggage on return so I didn't have to part with them!
    I guess security just overlooked them the first time!

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be an issue of who you encounter on any given day or even if you're trying to bring metal or wood/bamboo needles. I've traveled recently with me knitting needles and had no problems bringing them along in my carry-on. Currently, the TSA site permits all types of needles in checked and carry-on baggage.

    I traveled for the first time as a knitter recently, and as someone who knits to ease my anxiety and help calm and focus my mind, I found what worked for me was to purchase a carry on size travel/project bag. The only things I carry-on our activities for me. Books, magazines, the extra battery chargers for my cell phone… Whatever it is I need and of course snacks… So by having a project bag where I could store everything neatly plus have all my other doodads, it was perfect for me and I could take a couple different projects as I was going to be spending a lot of time on the beach! It worked out perfectly and As this was my first time flying since being diagnosed with severe paranoid anxiety and panic disorder, Having a carry-on size project bag was perfect I had everything I needed to keep calm and stay focused on counting my stitches and avoided any panic attacks! Successful travel!!!

    My tip for traveling is don't use a pattern that requires stitch markers! I was on one particularly turbulent flight and I got to the marker, huge drop, and the marker went flying! And then it happened again. Luckily both markers landed in the lap of the person behind me and she knew what was going on and returned them to me. I put that project away for the rest of the flight.

    Traveling was something I did quite a bit. I would bring nonmetal hooks or needles. Enough yarn/patterns(paper) for at least 1 project per week, being bored when there is nothing else to do but hang out with other people was unacceptable. I even taught others how to crochet. I never counted on the internet or electronics, they failed me too many times. A small pair of nail clippers, though the dental floss thing could work if your yarn is small enough.

    Great tips Chandi! Where did you get that accessory kit! It’s amazing. As I travel on the road a lot or work I always leave a knit and crochet project in the car as my husband likes to drive me. Works for me, lol. What I’ve done at times, especially when I have a 2 or 3 row repeat at the most is to make a copy of those rows of the pattern, enlarge it and tape it to my dashboard so I can easily see it if I need to. It works great! And no more dragging out the pattern and trying to find the row I need. I also save the complicated stuff for home or when I’m not on the go! Thanks for sharing your great tips!

    If you are traveling internationally check with the airport before you leave the hotel to see if your knitting will go through their security. Some countries do not allow it, some do. I have not personally experienced my knitting being confiscated but I have heard others say their entire knitting bag was taken, yarn and all. Had they known they could have put theirs in their checked luggage before leaving for the airport.

    It's not up to the airline alone. TSA agents can confiscate your needles and you won't have them for your trip. It doesn't happen often but it's left to the discretion of the agent. I would take wooden needles as they won't show on the scanner. Also the video only shows starting a project; if you have a WIP, place the stitches on a lifeline or cable with stoppers and store the needles separately.

    I was wondering what yarn had the most yardage. Never knew fingerling or sport weight yarn doed.

      The thinnest yarn has the most yardage, which would be cobweb yarn.

      @@ExpressionFiberArts What size needle is worked best with cobweb? How about crochet hook size as well?

    If I travel in the car I put a hole in a butter lid thread the yarn through put the yarn in the butter container and close it. So that way my yarn stays in one place.

      Those foam earplugs from the drugstore are handy - and you can use them as earplugs, too!

    Spare hook - on a bus trip dropped my crochet hook - it rolled into the crack at the side, out of reach. I had 5 hours of travel ahead and no hook!!!

    I got held up the last time I flew because I had accidentally stuck a pocket knife in my purse when we cleaned out my Dad’s nursing home room after he died. I forgot and though I had a small purse, the agent couldn’t find it... So, no scissors for me either but knitting socks or a simple scarf will always win the blue ribbon!!!

    If you don't feel comfortable bringing scissors on the flight, a pair of nail clippers can get the job done.
