Decapped Injector Disappointment...

  • Today I flow tested my junkyard injectors, before and after decapping, and the results were not what I expected.
    Sometimes things don't go the way you want them to with your automotive projects and this is one of those times. Got a little bummed out at the end of this one.

    thanks for the vid. this helps me make the decision to get some new injectors instead of using decaps.

      Yeah I have given up totally on decaps yet but new injectors would definitely be simpler.

    Nice attempt at getting these injectors to flow more via de-capping. Appreciated the content and your effort. You mentioned the voltage used, but did not comment on the duty cycle. If it was straight DC, the constant current stands a chance of overheating the windings and causing the magnetic field to lose intensity as the resistance in the windings of the injector goes up (caused by heat), and the current flow (and holding power of the coil) goes down. This would cause the pintle to slowly close as it lost it's ability to be held open against the pressure of the fluid you are using, as shown in the video. The pintle cap would actually help the matter in this regard, as most of the pressure would be built up behind the cap, and subsequently, only a fraction of the pressure would be realized at the pintle. Try this test again (if you are willing, that is) with opening up the existing holes with a needle broach. It may be possible to really fine-tune the injector that way. Maybe as close as a couple of percent or less if you have the patience. May God bless you and your family, and stay safe!

    For static testing, you can try to simply apply 12v constant and ground.
    Just to see if they will flow fully, ignoring the perfect 30 seconds and all that. Just open them up direct to 12v and see if they'll spray as long as you give them voltage.
    I've had a few spray patterns clean up after a few cycles of acetone also.

      I tried hooking them directly up to the battery and had the same results.

      @@LowbuckLS I wonder if you overheated them during your decap procedure and melted an internal o-ring.

    I have heard that when testing an injector only ground it for a split second or it can ruin it. You need a pulse width modulator, or something similar.

    It's been nine months since this vid, have you figured out what was goin on? I checked Sloopy channel, all I can say is maybe its dirt in the screens. Not knowing how to get those out but they do come out. Keep up the great vids, thanks for posting.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Bellingham I did change the screens but that didn’t solve the issue. I ended up scrapping the injectors I got from the junkyard and decapping the injectors that the truck came with from the factory and they worked, you can see that in this video: th-cam.com/video/HXB35d_q8EE/w-d-xo.html

    How much pressure are you using? The gauge shows +- 400 but what’s the scale?
    Injectors need oil, light oil run through them before storage or they have a high rate of locking up. We learned this the hard way. JD

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeff that gauge is in kpa so it is equivalent to 58 psi like the injector would see in service on the engine. These ones went right into the engine so I didn’t need to worry about putting oil in them but good to know for future reference.

    Constant power fries the magneto coil, because it fights the spring.

    Hi,nice video,thanks for it, I'm thinking, injectors are operated from car ecu and ecu voltage is 5v, not sure about your situation, but when i was trying to clean injectors from battery, i clean them in 3 rounds with different chemicals, and noticed each time whey work worse and worse, end off all ,i burned electric solenoid in injector.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edgars Vilcins that could be possible I haven’t measured what voltage is put out by the ECU to fire the injectors

    • @melvinwood8957
      @melvinwood8957 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The injector gets 12volts constant, the ecm grounds the injector to fire it.

    I used # 12613411 5.3 flex fuel injectors. They are $25 on ebay for 8 of them. Caps pop off easily with no grinding. After flowing 16 injectors I have a set of 80 lb within 3%

    I know this video is now 3 years old and you got other injectors and moved on but I really wish you put the injector in there upside down... That way it would blow out any junk that is inside the injector and clean out the insides with the mineral spirits... And then after doing that for a bit seeing if they work.
    Or maybe even throwing it in an ultrasonic cleaner and then running it backwards... Basically cleaning out any junk that's in there and making them like new inside.

    your checking 12v for a drop. I would get an injector pulse light and see if the pulse is changing.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought with 12v applied to the injector it should be held wide open and not be pulsing. Not familiar with what an injector pulse light is but maybe I’ll see if I can find one.

  • @fundamentallybroken4194

    I'm no pro, but I don't think your test is taking into account injector duty cycle. You're keeping them open at full power for 30 seconds when they are only supposed to pop open for a few miliseconds under normal use. That might be the issue.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Michalski you might be right but I thought a static flow test was done with the injector being held wide open and a dynamic flow test was done with the injector being pulsed. I’m just learning this stuff as I go though so I could be wrong.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically it’s an affordable way of getting a larger fuel injector. The stock injectors are pretty small and if you add a turbo or other form of power added to your engine the factory injectors won’t be big enough unless you decap them.
