Dyno testing a bone stock LM7

  • If you tuned in last time, you know I'm permanently removing the 5.3 liter LM7 which came in the UglyTruck in favor of something a little larger and much more unique. Its served faithfully for 327,000 miles, but its time to de-LS swap my Silverado and install a L18 Vortec 8.1 in its place.
Yes, its a heavier engine which uses a lot of fuel and has nearly no aftermarket support, but come on. How cool is a big block powered muscle truck? I'm all about making power and torque, and what better way than a nearly 500 cubic inch engine. Stay tuned for progress...

Who cares what the big engine critics think. Its a neat change of pace. If it doesn't work out with the 8.1 you can always put a 5.3 or 6.0 back in. there is actually a massive amount of aftermarket parts and support for a big block
and a Big block has a more power potential than an LS just because of the cubic inch advantage
yes, you can make 1200-1400 at the tire with an LS relatively easily with the right parts, but invest the same amount of time and money building a big block, and you end up with a lot more power and torque

They could have gone to better flowing aluminum heads upped the compression and maybe got direct or dual injection when the LT versions came out. But there is hope. The reasons you are going to an 8.1 are similar to why I build 455 Pontiacs for my cars, because I like to have 550ftlbs from 2000 to 5000rpm. It doesn't make sense to the guys who want to throw a lot of gear in and spin it to the moon, but its fun having a daily driver that runs 11s through the mufflers and does it all with a 3.08-3.55 gear. that 8.1 isn't going to like the 4.30 gear so much, but the overdrive will help along with the tall tires. Should be able to pull a trailer real easy. I'm putting a 6.0 in my 76 C10 because I have one sitting here, and I needed the Pontiac 400 I had in it for one of the GTOs. The 454 I put in after the 400 has no power, burns way to much gas, and is the most pathetic thing I have ever owned. Costs too much to make it run like one of my Pontiacs too, not that the LS swap is cheap. I am already into it for $2k and the $350 engine is still on the stand.
I like the bottom end that will pull harder with a 3.08 than with a 4.10, gives me more top end to go with the good 60ft and I can drive it anywhere.

if its a true cold air intake that has a filter thats sealed from engine bay heat in a proper box and has good higher flow tubing, it is worth a few ponies. I have an 03 Silverado 4x4 Z71. On a 4L60e to 4L80e trany swap. You know how you run the speed sensor wires on the trans to the red side and not the green side of the computer? Well on my truck, they're both red. I plugged it in to the first 22 and 23 slot i saw. So if they both have the same numbers. Wichone is it?

Bone stock..? Wait! Do I see a CAI kit? Come on. Not even the free mods? TB bypass? Circumcising the egr tube? De-screening the maf? Just curious. I've got the basics and wanted to know ball park bc I'm not doing a before and after with my build. But I'm going with LQ9 shortblock, 243 that I'm in process of hand porting, sd parts ls6 power max cam, ported tbss intake and tb with xlink... Thru the 4l60e, wanting to get close to the 400whp mark if i go with long tubes. SD made 430 on engine dyno with unported tbss and 92mm tb. So being an iron LS2, I'm starting with a 400hp platform and running a slightly larger cam.
I just can't see nor have time to mess with a bbc swap in one of my DD'ers. I'm curious the 0-60 with the 8.1L in a 1500!! Add a blower.. Now that will be hella fun with tq for days!

    Just found your channel.
Im hearing what you are saying and do not fully disagree.
For sure im on board with Anti-LS swap movement, basically out of boredom. Ill eat my words one day when i do a junkyard ls/turbo swap (lol) but for now, i dunno, my biggest issue is thats all youtube consists of is LS the world.
    Now here My plan out.
Being half a century old and a lifetime Oldsmobile fan, soon as i tie up some loose ends in life, im gonna throw together a square body chevrolet with an Olds 455, probably turbo400 with adapter plate for chev/bop.
I Really want a clean yet patina two tone 1973 K-20 on 35's for this.
A Holley...um...i think its called Avenger(?) using what may be the best aftermarket ecm out there but kit based on a square bore throttle body setup for weirdos like me who want to EFI their "lowly" Olds 455.
For the record i have a .030 over 462 olds '55 with steel 2 bolt caps (no girdle) flat top arias, custom Crane hyd roller (this cam has a cast dist gear pressed onto the billet shaft for stock typw distributors no need for bronze gear for street and longevity. Ported and flowed locally we did alot to the Edelbrock heads and the numbers still sucked. However with an old holley street dominator single plane and old BG modified 850 annular carb it made 620/620 hp/torque on the pump. Lots of little things i would/will be in future doing different to this combo in search for a 700+ n/a all oldsmobile engine for the street/strip 1970 442 which ive owned since 1983. Currently tore down to a roller, that car has to suffer thru the last 15 years of its owners life because life has not been kind for about the same amount of time.
So now that i got wayyyy off track on this comment and wrote a novel, may i try to pull all this back in for anyone who has read this far?
A solid basic built budget 455 Olds in a square body sounded like the plan until the old trucks cost more than some houses.
Now im thinking of a relatively clean 1989-1998 C or (preferrably) K 1500 or 2500.
Build and drive it on a carb for cheap then later do all that aftermarket throttle body efi updates later.
I like your idea stuffing the 8.1 if for no other reason than cheap different big block. Highlight "different"

Not to take away from the channel, the 8.1 has alot of potential as is. Ive always been a fan of this "unknown" big block chev

I’m also surprised at the dyno numbers on your LM7. I’ve got an L33 in my 2007 classic with a baby cam, CAI, and cat back exhaust, tune and I am in the 290s horsepower and torque. I also have right at 100,000 miles less than you. Do you my 285/75R17 tires destroy my torque numbers on the dyno?

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

so mine did 230hp and 296tq at the wheels bone stock, and you have a small cam, cold air intake, and exhuast which assuming an equal baseline, you've added approx 60hp at the wheels. Sounds about right to me for your setup, but yes, the larger tires will soak up a little more horsepower (not a ton, but some)

I work on them (L18)often in propane trucks, they run the piss out of them but not high rpm, some oiling mods might be a good idea for higher rpm but basically your saying a bbc is bearing spin prone.. I can promise you it’s about as prone as a SBC spinning one.

John Salary it’s not about getting anyone to change their mind, it’s a about taking the path less traveled. I have built plenty of LS and many other engines in my career which make good power, and in this very video I point out how the LS is a great platform for making horsepower, has inexpensive parts, is lightweight and compact. I never said the 8.1 is superior (in fact I almost said it’s not...) but I just want a challenge and to do something that’s not the same as 50 million other projects.

    • @frigglebiscuit7484
