  • Kyrie Irving suffered a scary knee injury in the Brooklyn Nets game against the Washington Wizards and so far all we know is that Irving has a knee sprain. In this video we'll review Kyrie Irving's injury footage and try to explain possible mechanisms and what might have happened to the NBA all star.

It's really tough for me to predict based on this footage, but I'd guess MCL, ACL, Meniscus, popliteus, PCL in that order of likelihood. But really not much would surprise me with this. The fact that we didn't hear more about the severity after the game makes me optimistic they have low suspicion for major injury after doing their physical exam.lets see what the MRI shows!

Brian Sutterer MD Hey Brian, Im a young athlete who a few months ago injured my knee. I Hype extended my knee so bad to a point where two bones scraped and sheered off a 1cm gap of cartilage. When i went to the sports medicine doctor in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina he said there is no other option than a procedure called micro fracture. I would like a second opinion, so is there any other option or no? Email me if you dont want to respond on yt. andrewpierce0325@icloud.com

what concerns me is his style of play is based off his ability to get low and shake defenders laterally, similar to the play of D.Rose. I just don't think his knees will sustain more than 2 years in the league at this pace. I hope I'm wrong, and he could evolve his game by learning how to pass. But I doubt that.and KD isn't returning. That dude ran on a partial injured Achilles, and probably tore it good. And even with a healthy KD,Kyrie won't matter because both lack the ability to lead. i.e. Patrick Mahomes.

@@pathnativejam I think he just has bone density issues or something. Remember when he fractured his kneecap with a non contact injury in the finals? He got an 3rd world infection when he was treated by best doctors in their field. Those are huge red flags that it's a life long issue that will never go away

I'm gonna say there's definitely significant meniscus damage. I had a similar injury like this in AFL, where I tackled a player and he fell back on me and my leg was bent in a similar action. Luckily I didn't need surgery but was out for a solid 6-7 weeks and had significant lack of movement. Hope it's nothing too serious.

I am surprised that you have never mentioned, in any of your knee cases, the role of the patello-femoral joint in maintaining rotational stability of the knee. As you know, when the knee is examined in full extension and relaxed, it is easy to move the patella from side to side and disengage it, at least to some degree, from the Inter-condylar groove. But once degree of knee flexion increases to15° or greater, whether actively or passively, the patella becomes deeply placed within the groove, and without it dislocating, the degree of rotation required for an ACL tear is almost impossible. So I have a long regarded the patello-femoral joint is the key to rotational tears of the ACL.
It looked to me like the knee was pretty well flexed before any rotation occurred. Whatcha think Doc? 😁

Why do players seem much less durable today than in the past?
I remember Jordan almost never missing a game and playing 82 games every year despite playing explosively for huge minutes.
Karl Malone had 17 seasons playing 80+ games, 11 seasons playing all 82 and he averaged 37 minutes per game for his entire career!
Sure there were the occasional Grant Hill or Penny Hardaway cases but for the most part I remember most star players playing long minutes and rarely getting hurt.
I feel like almost every "star" these days is extremely fragile outside of maybe Lebron and Westbrook.
Doncic and Porzingis have been taking turns getting injured. Obviously Kyrie. Blake, Rose yet again etc.
Seems like teams are taking more precautions, players are averaging less minutes, having rest days, cold immersion treatment right after games, etc. yet still seems like stars play in short stretches before yet another injury takes them out.

Unreal he had a amazing return he plays well when he plays I think he is pushing himself to hard and he has been in the right place at the wrong time
Just hope it all works out he should take it easy and wait till next season he will have KD to take some burden off him and hopefully KD is at least close to the KD we knew

Kyrie's game is very heavy on getting low, quick lateral movements to shake and evade defenders, burst of speed and shiftiness. This type of game puts his knees, ankles and muscles on constant pressure. Something is gonna give. I doubt he will have a full season of being healthy. He's gonna have to deal with nagging injuries as long as he plays. I can see his prime/all star status end in 2 to 3 years.
