I know, that's the lock system I was referring to. I called it a soft lock because using it doesn't actually change the way Raiden positions himself or where the analogue stick will move him.
Weapon wheel or on-the-fly switching wasn't implemented because the weapon animations are too big to do it, the game actually needs to pause to dump the data out of RAM and load up the new weapon. It's actually the same reason most last-gen FPS games are restricted to two weapon inventories and even those that aren't usually don't let you cycle your complete inventory.
***** Maybe Platinum just thought "hmmm, we made a pretty awesome game... let's save that weapon switching mechanic for the next game." Go figure, it's a pretty standard mechanic so I was pretty surprised when it wasn't in this game.
CruelestChris Great info mate , just wish they'd make MGRising II for PS4 . With all the fresh memory to play with, plus you know Komami would let them use Fox engine ;-D
***** I think in that case it's "because that's how Halo works" rather than because they actually have to. It's why they did it in the first one, though, so they could have higher-detail weapon models.
+Chinga3000 I guess now that Konami is going to focus on mobile games, Metal Gear Rising 2 is doomed never to be developed, right? Or will Kojima contact Platinum Games again once he has sorted everything out after his split with Konami? They'd need a new publisher, anyway, and I don't know who would do it. Probably not Capcom, considering they're not really on good terms with Platinum.
I only think the plot was kinda absurd in the sense of , okay Raiden comes back to his old crazy ass muderous Jack the Ripper state of mind, and THAT'S IT! nothing's resolved, he regresses to his old persona and he doesn't come to terms with his dark past or anything, or has some sort of redemption, kinda fucked up, it's like in Samurai X, Kenshin went back to being Battousai and the plot ended there
do you know what kojima said about the sequel, he literally said that he would only let Pgames make a sequel if they made it about frank jager killing nanomachine zombies, and that they'll only let platinum make a sequel
Well, I don't quite agree with people in this respect. Mainly because people seem to missing some important bits of plot and its parallels to our world. SPOILERS In fact I'd say Raiden's regression is very important, especially at the end. Why? Because he's been living a LIE! His whole philosophy of being "The Sword of Justice" wasn't something he truly believed in or did he fight for "The Sake of Humanity and Society". He had no purpose and just followed what others told him, both the AI in MGS2 and Sam tell him things like this and they're right. He didn't sick around the PMCs to protect people, subconsciously he did it because he just can not adjust to normal life. Not only that, but he comes to the realisation that the Society he's fighting for, isn't necessarily right or good, and equality doesn't necessarily mean that those in a dire situation get what they need. Which happens in game and is something that is happening today, I mean not to get TOO political and turn this into a flame war but just look at the Israeli and Palestine conflict. shadowshredder89 Well its a very common complaint which I feel like people seem to not quite understand the importance of it. And the fact that, well, his violent nature is important. Not just about how he's trying to avoid it, because truthfully, he needs it now more than ever. And here he needs to be a "monster" in order to kill the other "monsters", he's not dealing with guys like Liquid/Solidus Snake and Vamp. Those guys compared to the MGRR bosses are cake walks! The only complaint I have for this game is that the sub weapons can't really be combo'd into/with the main weapon seamlessly like for example in Devil May Cry 3. I never even really used any of the sub weapons that much.
Clavitz Rain I actually didn't really have any issues with that due to the nature of the camera. DMC 3 (and the others) have a fixed camera that zooms in and out depending on the situation, so the lock on was important. Compared to Revengance which had a free camera and the fights emphasizing on the parry mechanice. Parrying a slight off screen enemy with a lock on would have been problematic. And IIRC, Revengance did have a lock on option, not just as good as DMC's (not to be confused with DmC).
understandable. I'm just too used to DMC and Darksider's hard lock on tied in with combat abilities that it works better for me. Raiden does have his own Stinger which would be easier used for me with a hard lock on. But I get what you're saying. To each their own haha.
*Codec conversations. *A protagonist who talks. *Cheesy over-the-top boss fights. *No health regeneration. Yup, this game has the soul of a Metal Gear game.
I always saw the story in MGRR as deliverately cheesy and over the top. You're not supposed to take it too seriously, it's just a fun over the top game.
@Best TH-cam channel the last of us part 2 so just because one really bad game, society has fallen? I don't like TLOU2's story, but comparing it to MGRR, which has an entirely different gameplay style, and story direction, isnt a fair comparision.
@Best TH-cam channel the last of us part 2 it is, but the issue is that you want to compare 2 completely different games to each other, in tone, soundtrack, gameplay style, which isnt a fair comparision to both games, just because they are both games, doesnt mean you can make a comparision between the two.
This game was actually super metal gear-esqu. Battles over philosophy, well written characters, amazing villains, with actual motivations. Rank A minus the gameplay
Dat ending.... Good critical review as always. I remember fuss during development, from being made by Kojima to his other team and finally Platinum Games. Personally i am impressed what they had done in such short time and i would love to see sequel if they would have more time to polish it.
When it comes to the character shift that Raiden goes through in this game, it kind of directly points fingers at his terrible development in MGS4 or at least his ending which tries to act as if his killer instinct will just disappear just because he was dragged back into everything unnecessarily in that game Rising moves in a completely different direction and is better for it
The most fun I've had with a metal gear game. Stories and deep characters are good and all, but a character-action game will always take priority on my shelf
then konami went to the toilet, we have a company that dont care about its consumers and has a bunch IPS that are beloved getting dust and being forgotten by new generation (zoe, castlevania, silent hill).
And now metal gear survive, wich is nothing but an arrogant Konami move, not a metal gear game. Instead of Rising that was appreciated by kojima himself
No, they were talking about it's placement in the storyline, whether it was in the canon storyline, or in a different universe on it's own. I know, but given how popular MGR is becoming, it's likely possible that Kojima Productions will cooperate with Platinum Studios again to make a sequel to MGR.
Subscribed, great work being done here, I feel it too. Don't feel too bad that mgs went downhill after 4, I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea....Good or Bad....we are Diamond Dogs.
In Ninja Gaiden, namely 1 and 2, you can switch out weapons during anytime, you don't have to be standing still like in MGR:R. Moving or not, you could always go into the pause or quick menu to switch weapons or do whatever in Ninja Gaiden.
I'd be interested to see what you think about the other Metal Gear titles. Have you thought about making a retrospect of those titles like what you did with Devil May Cry?
God damn it Brit, this review is so much better than mine. Seriously dude. God damn it. I wonder what you thought about the whole child soldier past thing though, while I thought it was decent element to Raiden's character I always thought that Raiden's lack of free wil under the Patriots was far more interesting and I wanted to be expanded upon in this game, Which is what I though MGS 4 was hinting at.
I wonder if Raiden's regression is another callback to MGS2's themes of sequels repeating themes from their predecessors. It may also be questioning whether or not we really can escape our own nature.
One of the coolest moments in the game I've seen so far (and I use the term loosely because the game is chock full of 'em) was when Raiden caught a red-hot kunai(?) with his "high-heel". Cyborgs don't need self-consciousness when you can do shit like that without batting an eyelid.
This game, I believe, had about a year of time with PLatinum, and it's one of my favorite action titles so far. Imagine if they had two years. Or three.
Indeed, those heels are actually a good way to keep the blades support. And hes a cyborg so balance isn't an issue, why not use high arch support if it helps him in combat with no set backs?
Very possible... Very few of my friends know, let alone played any of the MGS but most of them have played MGR... This gives Metal Gear an entirely new opportunity to get bigger and better.
Weird you didn't comment George's voice acting, [go ninja, go!] but as to Raiden's regression midway I feel like it really adds an edge to the character. He's been trying to cover up his inner demon but finally realizes he just likes chopping people up, albeit with a good cause in mind (because you can chop up people by the dozens if it means something good will happen at the end right? ;)
I suppose you are thinking or implying that raiden is wearing boots with high heels while he have cyborg body he that heel is part of his feet. There are two kind of heel, as part of boot and part of feet.
They at least have the good sense to tell you what ridiculousness you're in for with the Ray battle at the beginning. The boss fights really made the game for me. I do hope Kojima Productions and Platnum Games do more of this in the future.
Watch the Angstrom battle and after Credits. The things he says after Credits: "Fighting for reasons they don't understand, causes the don't believe in..." "I've got my own war to fight."
If Konami had any sense at all they'd make a sequel to this instead of shit like Metal Gear Survive. But that'd involve Konami actually giving a crap...which they clearly don't. God forbid the gaming industry isn't as profitable as bloody pachinko machines.
I’m late on this but it seems like 5% of players know the trick that allows you to move during Blade Mode. While in Blade Mode, just hold down the left stick. You can’t turn while holding it down but you can walk in any direction as long as you have enough energy. Not super helpful but if you accidentally hit someone out of range, you can walk toward them.
You know, the cybernetic wolf was the most interesting character for me, though that was cause I had AS MANY codec conversations with it as I possibly could if I wasn't too into all the fighting. I would say it did develop it a bit but yeah character development was lacking. My favourite part of the game, the battles with the Unmanned RAY, revenge was coming after 25 RAYS in MGS2 and I got it.
All I can say is if P* did this well with MGR:R in development for less than 2 years, I can't WAIT to see MGR2. Best hack n' slash out this year, bar none.
the Good news this has already out sold DmC (which has already dropped from the top 100 in the US & UK) in its first week alone and if things keep going strong it will hit over 1 mil by the end of the month might even make 2 mil if were lucky
Pretty good review. There are quite a number of flaws in this title, but it's such a gem that they're somewhat easy to disregard. I would honestly love to see what Platinum would be capable of when they have a proper development cycle for the game, rather than an abrupt and short one.
Wasn't this video a bit short? You usually make lengthier videos, and I like it that way really. Sometime you should dissect the MGS series as a whole and discuss it's ironic lack of subtlety in it's narrative. And perhaps discuss MGS4 and how it's gameplay could have delivered a bit more than it did, mainly in terms of the linear level design and the seemingly tacked on DB system.
isn't having a large number of moves pointless when you add enemys to the game that can only be hurt by one element thus cutting the number of moves you can use in half?
I do have a bit of a qualm with this review in how you mention bosses aren't introduced as much, mainly because each mission has 2-3 codec conversations about the boss you're going to face just before boss arenas that are pretty much context dumps. I think it was taken out mainly due to pacing issues after MGS4's cutscene-a-palooza. You are dead on about lock on being weird. The problem I have is being unable to swap targets to my knowledge, which made the first RAY fight annoying as hell.
The story and how long game is matter of behind the scene issues. Originaly Kojima wanted to make a game about grey fox but he give project to another team in Kojima production and they decided to make a game about raiden.
I understand what Hidraga is saying; sometimes there are games that focus too heavily towards the Japanese market (i.e. Most of the Atlus games), but there are games like Anarchy Reigns that focuses really towards everyone. This is more of a Crayzee game than an Animu game.
It's funny because it was confirmed already to be the same universe. A spin-off doesn't always end up on it's own. For example the Kingdom Hearts series, many spin-offs, all of them same universe just different time spot. Also definition of Spin-Off: Differential gameplay of a certain series, taking a different road, though sticking to the stories main details(plot, desgin, etc)
You got one thing wrong about the controls. I used Type B controls since my first play, which swapped the Blade Mode sticks around so you can very easily direct your slash using the left stick, look around using the right stick, then use the face buttons to slash. I keep telling people [since like the game's release] to switch to Type B, but because they started playing using Type A/C or whatever and kept to it throughout, they think it feels really weird and have trouble switching and adapting to the controls again for Type B which is a far more logical setup... at least for the PS2/PS3 controllers.
goober2049 Well then try Type B, your mind will be blown. That said... nothing wrong with the default controls... but if people will complain about the stick flicking and how "Boohoo I can't do the slashes so this game is bullshit!" then that's when they need to switch control schemes. I personally find Type B is just more logical as a controls setup than the other Types.
Those high heels are part of the blades, If I would have to wear high-heel boots just for the sake of blades, Id do it. It pays for itself pretty well on raiden.
But I have to say is not really really clear what Raiden will do next. To me, sounds like what Sam were doing before "join" the Desperado. But now "Jack is back" and I don't remember if MGS4 said anything about "The Ripper". Raiden gave in bloodlust like Sam told him to. ("You deny your weapons purpose") And he enjoys killing, even in MGS2 he does. The question is, what about his son and wife? Also, is Raiden just a head now? :b
I think they were talking about how gameplay wise it's a spin off to MGS. MGS5 is still coming out and it will have the same stealth oriented gameplay. Story and canon wise its in the same universe. It's not Kojima said this is how MGS will be from now on
I heard it on the HateBit Podcast. He was talking about how much he hates the PS2, and hates the fact that his favorite game on the gamecube was ported to it... RE4. Which i think is utterly ridiculous. If my favorite game was ported to other systems so other people could play it, i'd say "GOOD! More people can love the game i love!" The only reason why I even heard this was because AlphaOmegaSin was plugging the Podcast, since he's in it, and i wanted to check it out...
Stan Irving-Wilmot is the creator, which is even in the video itself. Searching for that guy would seem to be the most logical thing to do, rather than ask.
Well it worked fine for me. Also i have a gripe with what you had to say about the stealth sections as in my expirence they worked perfectly often feeling like the old tenchu series. The items the game provides are far from useless as you actually need to use them if you wish to save all the civilians. I do understand what your getting at with the weapon switching but not everything needs to be DMC. Take the Ninja Gaiden games for example. They handle weapon switching in much the same way.
The game would have been better if platinum games was allowed more time to work on it. Which is why I hope they make a sequel as well. Kojima himself said he'd want platinum games to work on a sequel to it and wouldn't pick anyone else. Not to mention lack of this gen constraints. I didn't hear anything about the codecs though did you watch all of them? They range from explaining how the sword can cut anything and character backgrounds.
What ?? MGRR2 ? they already working on that? Do you have any source?? Please show me! I would love to see that happening. I prey everytime i go to sleep that they continue with the franchise!!!
Most of the comments are referring to Sunny which was introduced in MGS4 , but none of them mentioning the Gekko's which are all over that damn place...=\
I'm still convinced this game was what inspired the music system in DMC 5, where it gets more intense and the lyrics kick in the better your style ranking.
5 years later looking back at the whole DmC vs MGR thing. MGR definitely had the better story, more likable characters, better franchise treatment, and more style butttttt DmC had better combat. I’m sorry but COME ON a game that manages to spawn hundreds of combo vids is always going to have better combat than one that doesn’t. Even though it might be somewhat diluted DmC still has that devil may cry feel to it’s gameplay. Devil may cry combat will always stomp any game that’s combat boils down to just pressing square and triangle in different orders.
To talk about that change Raiden makes with the least amount of spoilers as possible. It's a great example of where the story really fails. It trys conveying one message one second, then coveys the COMPLETE opposite the next, and then repeats this consistently till the end. It gets confusing, and pretty redundant. Especially when it literally changes nothing and only regresses Raiden's character, as the Brit said. The funny thing is even the Characters at one point just start saying "F*** it"
I couldn't stand any Metal Gear game before this. I tried it at my friend's house and while not as fun and not NEARLY as hard it reminded me so much of Ninja Gaiden Black I couldn't pass it up. I really want this game. If YOU recommend something I'm interested in, Hell the fuck yes.
Kojima has said that he is very happy with the sales (almost a mil BTW) would like 2 have Platinum Games make a sequel as soon as they can it might be about how how Raiden saved Sunny from the Patriots which was what the game was might 2 be about in the first place before it got caned & changed its still in the talks but MGR2 is very much in the works but its still @ a very early stage
Forgot to mention how it has one of the most entertaining final bosses in a video game.
Nanomachines son
And also the most entertaining tutorial boss
*"IF IT AIN'T SAUCY JACK"*
I'll never forget the memes.
I'd rather have a sequel to this than Phantom Pain if I'm honest
I never even considered that but you are so right
i also do, this one felt for me more fun
Amen to that!
Konami: “how about neither of those”
I don't know if I'd really say that because I really enjoyed playing Phantom Pain. But I totally love this game and I wish there were more levels/a sequel
RUUUULLEEEESSS OF NAAAATTTUUURREEEEE!!!!!!!!!!111 *Flips desk over with computer on it!*
That's one badass soundtrack there!
Hey, remember to split it wide open!
The combat is faultless, the story is bonkers and the bosses some of the finest in gaming history.
I NEEED a sequel of this.
Me too!
PLEASE?

The use of music in this game is genius
lol he meant vocals in a hack n' slash
One of my favourite things in the game
Not for Razorfist or ZeroPunctuation though.
Nanomachines, son !
I bought this soundtrack a few months ago, and it was the best 10 dollars I have ever spent.
Bruh it's free on TH-cam

EntityDJI for me at least, my favorite line normal MGS is "Were not tools of the government or anything else" for revengence its "nanomachines son"
Metal Gear Rising's bosses are still better characterized than the B&B corps from Metal Gear Solid 4.

Raiden's game felt more fluid for me.
weichiang89 i don't know about all the weapons but the first one you get, the hand spear thing you could combo with it i think.
I'll never play MGS5 again, but I will revisit Metal Gear Rising. That says it all, I think.
Why? MSG5 is my favorite in the series, rising is 2nd
Still a beter Metal Gear game than Phantom Pain
*Codec conversations.
*A protagonist who talks.
*Cheesy over-the-top boss fights.
*No health regeneration.
Yup, this game has the soul of a Metal Gear game.
tltar253 Which is not, by any means, saying much
I find it funny how I put more time into MGR than MGSV (150 hours vs 70)
Def better than MG Survive!! 😣
Noony everything is better than survive
I always saw the story in MGRR as deliverately cheesy and over the top. You're not supposed to take it too seriously, it's just a fun over the top game.
I agree. But I think making things _matter_ would not hurt.
like... the entire franchise...? duh
@Best TH-cam channel the last of us part 2 we get it, TLOU2 is bad, but that has nothing to do with it.
Ivan Medrano I just wanted a little more from some characters. Specifically the boss villains like Sam or Sundowner
Is Revengeance canon? If it is i feel bad for Raiden, because this game robs him of a happy ending.
I kinda had some trouble with the parry system at first, but once it 'clicked' for me, it became very satisfying.
Dat ending....
Good critical review as always. I remember fuss during development, from being made by Kojima to his other team and finally Platinum Games. Personally i am impressed what they had done in such short time and i would love to see sequel if they would have more time to polish it.
"Stealth" takedowns are my favorite part.
0:40 Did you just say.. Hack aND SLASH!?!??!?
Rare footage of Razorfist sounding like he's having fun.
When it comes to the character shift that Raiden goes through in this game, it kind of directly points fingers at his terrible development in MGS4 or at least his ending which tries to act as if his killer instinct will just disappear just because he was dragged back into everything unnecessarily in that game
Rising moves in a completely different direction and is better for it
The most fun I've had with a metal gear game. Stories and deep characters are good and all, but a character-action game will always take priority on my shelf
then konami went to the toilet, we have a company that dont care about its consumers and has a bunch IPS that are beloved getting dust and being forgotten by new generation (zoe, castlevania, silent hill).
panoctic It's criminal how fucked over those franchises were.
And now metal gear survive, wich is nothing but an arrogant Konami move, not a metal gear game. Instead of Rising that was appreciated by kojima himself
Sure this game does show bosses way before you fight them, but you may have forgotten that MGS3 did that too. Nothing bad, just saying
He said _just_ before you fight them.
Zeraab And it was bad when MGS3 did it, too
No, they were talking about it's placement in the storyline, whether it was in the canon storyline, or in a different universe on it's own.
Wasn't that astronaut in MGS3 introduced just before the fight?
I'd be interested to see what you think about the other Metal Gear titles. Have you thought about making a retrospect of those titles like what you did with Devil May Cry?
what's that song in the beginning, the one after the intro, but before he speaks?
Glad to see you haven't completely been taken over by Platinum Dronitus.
This game, I believe, had about a year of time with PLatinum, and it's one of my favorite action titles so far. Imagine if they had two years. Or three.
It may have been five years, but you can move while using blade mode by holding down the left analog stick.
Indeed, those heels are actually a good way to keep the blades support. And hes a cyborg so balance isn't an issue, why not use high arch support if it helps him in combat with no set backs?
Could someone tell me the name of the track in the very beginning?
Question: Who was in charge of the writting of this game? Platinum or Team Metal Gear?
Very possible... Very few of my friends know, let alone played any of the MGS but most of them have played MGR... This gives Metal Gear an entirely new opportunity to get bigger and better.
Weird you didn't comment George's voice acting, [go ninja, go!] but as to Raiden's regression midway I feel like it really adds an edge to the character. He's been trying to cover up his inner demon but finally realizes he just likes chopping people up, albeit with a good cause in mind (because you can chop up people by the dozens if it means something good will happen at the end right? ;)
Me:Imma Go Sleep
*New TheGamingBritShow Video Goes Up*
Me:Coffee Time
This video is 6 years old
They made my hometown look dull as shit. ;-;
GammaWALLE it's the future dude
Should we expect you to do Bayonetta 2 when it comes out?
I suppose you are thinking or implying that raiden is wearing boots with high heels while he have cyborg body he that heel is part of his feet.
There are two kind of heel, as part of boot and part of feet.
They at least have the good sense to tell you what ridiculousness you're in for with the Ray battle at the beginning.
The boss fights really made the game for me. I do hope Kojima Productions and Platnum Games do more of this in the future.
Watch the Angstrom battle and after Credits. The things he says after Credits:
"Fighting for reasons they don't understand, causes the don't believe in..."
"I've got my own war to fight."
When you say "hold down the left stick" that means L3 right?
@@mbrillon765 yea
Is there anything intrinsically wrong with having a discussion?
Wasn't this video a bit short? You usually make lengthier videos, and I like it that way really.
Sometime you should dissect the MGS series as a whole and discuss it's ironic lack of subtlety in it's narrative.
And perhaps discuss MGS4 and how it's gameplay could have delivered a bit more than it did, mainly in terms of the linear level design and the seemingly tacked on DB system.
what is the intro music called
i for one love this kind of music so i definetly plan on picking this up sometime
isn't having a large number of moves pointless when you add enemys to the game that can only be hurt by one element thus cutting the number of moves you can use in half?
I do have a bit of a qualm with this review in how you mention bosses aren't introduced as much, mainly because each mission has 2-3 codec conversations about the boss you're going to face just before boss arenas that are pretty much context dumps. I think it was taken out mainly due to pacing issues after MGS4's cutscene-a-palooza.
You are dead on about lock on being weird. The problem I have is being unable to swap targets to my knowledge, which made the first RAY fight annoying as hell.
It's weird. I actually agree with every single point you made 100%.
The story and how long game is matter of behind the scene issues. Originaly Kojima wanted to make a game about grey fox but he give project to another team in Kojima production and they decided to make a game about raiden.
can you post links to the games soundtrack?
So right now Revegeance has one of the best soundtracks in a hack and slash game, it's so fucking hype!
You should do aDante's inferno review
Personally I found the default controls to work just fine.
goober2049 Well then try Type B, your mind will be blown.
Where I want to see a hard core look at games, he is your guy.
What was that at the end?
But I have to say is not really really clear what Raiden will do next. To me, sounds like what Sam were doing before "join" the Desperado. But now "Jack is back" and I don't remember if MGS4 said anything about "The Ripper". Raiden gave in bloodlust like Sam told him to. ("You deny your weapons purpose") And he enjoys killing, even in MGS2 he does. The question is, what about his son and wife? Also, is Raiden just a head now? :b
Is that other M in the trashcan in the intro?
"Yeah because Raiden is wearing them for fashion right?"
What's the song at 0:20?
You mean the gameplay intro? "Rules of Nature".
There is a toggle lock on r2 to use on ps3
There is a hard lock on in the game. Press R2/RB.
Also, try konami code on "Press start" screen. It unlocks Very Hard and Revengeance difficulties.
They handle weapon switching in much the same way.
what song from the ost is the one playing on the intro?
the song name is: Rules of Nature
I'm surprised on how The Gaming Brit can be so deep and serious on his reviews, but I think I prefer the pun-filled reviews of his
i said console is capped at 60 not 30 and they did spend alot to do up their computer im not to sure how much
what is the intro song?
Can you believe that Monty Oum dissed the animation in this game?
Yeah, I do. It's fuckin Monty.
If I’m not mistaken, DmC: Devil May Cry had the dynamic music system before MGRR. So DMC5 probably got it from there.
If I’m not mistaken, DmC: Devil May Cry had the dynamic music system before MGRR. So DMC5 probably got it from there.
Mgr also has a lot of combo videos
Honestly feel as if this game does a better job of being a “Metal Gear” game than Phantom Pain.
Does this game has enemy snapping ??
"Rules of Nature." It's a part of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance's OST.
