      What DMC should be right now, not shoving microtransactions, rewarding the endless pockets and getting greedy by rewarding such... I won't be playing V nor 4SE for these reasons alone, not to mention... It runs past 60fps for the original PC release and does have Turbo Mode, its everything I need as well... Sorry, Lady, you were not implemented very well, Trish was kinda eh for me, Vergil is something I can return to with DMC3SE and has just as little impact outside of having actually been a part of the story, to begin with really. So thank god I can play this and I suppose... watch as Capcom fucks up DMCV by trying to fuck over the fans that have been waiting forever for a proper return, I'm sorry but I saw the writing on the wall with the Pachinko machine announcement not long back... Well they will find out the hard way I suppose

    Capcom recently announced a list of 6 franchises they're focusing on and DMC is one of them. Given the reception and sales of DmC, it will probably be DMC5.

    • @1Synner
      @1Synner 10 ปีที่แล้ว +278

      That is, unfortunately, probably because he doesn't. He's not a hack n slash/beat-em-up gamer. He's an MMO/RPG/Shooter player. He considered Lolipop Chainsaw worth the hype, but Bayonetta not worth it.
      As much as I like Joe, he really shouldn't have dipped his toes into something he knows so little about. And it shows that he doesn't. It really, really does.

      He really does not.
      He gave DmC higher score than Bayonetta.
      Don't trust him when it comes to core hack and slash mechanics, Joe is more like the reviewer for the average gamer. The reason I like his reviews is because he is very sincere and honest.
      His Ride to Hell, Mindjack and Rambo: The Videogame reviews are entertainment gold.

      Bruce Wayne Now, that's not very fair. Plenty of intelligent adults watch his reviews for the same reason we all watch, play, listen to, or read anything. Entertainment.
      And his rants, for the most part, are fairly accurate (when he knows what he's talking about, at least). So, cut Joe a little slack. He is trying, and some people do legitimately like his works.

    I also forgot to mention that devil may cry 3 actually did have a story with complex characters, the onlything was that we werer just droped into the middle of it and they behaved like real people I use real very loosely, it's obvious that the story started a year before 3 started. the reason vergil doesn't go into detail about his motive is because dante already knows it, and they are both after the same thing but different methods.
    with the "Foolishness dante, foolishness. Might controls everything, without strength you cannot protect anything. Let alone yourself. he doesn't need to tell dante he's wants power so he will never experience the helplessness of not being able to save the ones he loves(his mother, and possibly dante if vergil thought dante was dead after their home was destroyed). it is also clear that vergil wasn't trying to kill dante at the very least in the first and second encounter. since vergil has far more experience than dante, vergil knows how far their regeneration can be pushed without killing him, if vergil wanted dante dead he would have just decapitated him instead of impaling him, in fact the impaling seems more of his way of telling dante to stay here until I get back. infact I can imagine their parants scolding them when they had a fight going something like this "Dante, Vergil, how many times have I told you if your going to shed blood put plastic on the floor first!"
    while dante starts off wanted to kick vergils ass for what happened a year ago and destroying his store/house. and resents his father to the point that he even says that he doesn't have a father, for either not being there to protect his family, or being the reason his his mother was killed. and after all the demons telling dante how great sparda was.
    I can go on but I don't want to bore you, it's story telling is similar to a mixture of dark souls and devil may cry 1(I would have actually liked there to be notes or journals laying around for dante to read like in the first game). at first glance it's a shallow straight forward story without much explanations for the characters actions, but you start thinking about the meaning of each line of dialogue, it paints a very compeling story, with rich character with a good deal of depth

    This is definitely one of your greatest videos to date. Not only do you analyze every single part of the combat for both games, you compared how todays hack and slashes handle Over the top scenarios which was honestly my favorite part of the video. And its funny how NT's PC DmC can FINALLY run at 60 fps, then you show how DMC 4 PC can run 4x or more faster. DMC 4 is one of the greatest PC ports ever, and DMC 3 and 4 are the best hack and slashes and beat em ups of all time.

    • @16dylan2
      @16dylan2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      DmC was native 30fps so increasing the fps in PC to 9000 still wouldn't make a difference apart from making it stable. same goes for DMC1-3 but they are all native 60fps, which is more than enough for a human eye to handle

    • @sofija1996
      @sofija1996 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well... let's just say that my crappy notebook runs DMC4 in smooth, stable 50-70 FPS (biggest drops I've noticed were ~40 FPS in LDK mode and ~30 FPS while recording stuff with X-Fire... and it's a 2009 mediocore notebook with dual core CPU @ 2.1 GHz and GF130M we're talking about) with all graphic settings set to Very High (AA is turned off, though) while DmC runs like shite and looks like shite on Medium/Low. UE3 is indeed a great engine.

    • @XXNemesisXXXX
      @XXNemesisXXXX 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe not the greatest PC port but a really damn good one! (Which is funny compared to 3's which I would say is as bad as Dark Souls). I can stream the game no prob with a constant 60 fps if not on LDK difficulty. PC version however, gives the Super costumes for DMD mode more stuff than just infinite DT!
      It locks red queen's charge gauge at maximum while giving Dante infinite Disaster (Pandora) and Royal Guard gauge!
      Someone finally accepted the fact that stuff like this are best when they're broken ^_^

    You have perfectly summarized my own feelings towards DMC4, DmC, hell even the franchise in general. It really is heartbreaking to see a series that had so much innovation and had so much potential for new games and advances in the combat system, for it simply to take several steps backwards with the reboot. The whole situation with the reboot (seeing comments and reactions from fans of it and the "journalists") has left me feeling jaded towards gaming in general. But I still also hope that we get a proper sequel to DMC4, which has mechanics and a combat system that builds upon the foundations of its predecessors. Until that day we can only dream.
    Thanks for a well done analysis of these amazing games, and it's great to see you back!!!

    If we get a DMC 5 I really hope Nero returns. I know some people didn't like him, but I loved him from the start. Maybe it was cause DMC 4 was my first DMC game. But I want his story to continue or at least support Dante in some way cause they go along great with one another. It would be awesome to see them work side by side in the entire story not just the end of it.

    I have never played so much as a second of a DMC game before, but I did see your previous DMC videos and greatly enjoyed them. And I gotta say, 75% of this video I was utterly and completely lost. I could barely keep up with your explanation of the games' depth and complexity, sometimes delving into technobabble to my uninitiated ears.
    And you know what? I don't give a fuck, because I couldn't keep from smiling the whole way through. Your passion and love for these games just oozes out, and you don't need to understand a goddamn word you say in order to know that.
    Oh, and I love the Gurren Lagann thing you've got going with Dante and the music. He does remind me a lot of Kamina, so it's a very appropriate choice. That, and Gurren Lagann just kicks ass.

      Potidaon DMC1 did have some really awesome enemy designs. The puppet looking demons were really cool.

    • @Potidaon
      @Potidaon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael McCallister They didn't just look awesome, but they were well-designed from a gameplay perspective as well.
      Take the Marionette in DMC1 for example. It had five different attack:
      - a short range two-hit cutting/swiping attack
      - a mid-range spinning move that does multiple hits
      - a long-range weapon throw/shotgun shot
      - a grab attack that did multiple hits
      - a warcry-like AoE that stuns Dante for several seconds.
      Defensive options include:
      - Block
      - Block & counter attack
      Compare with DMC3 and 4:
      Hell Pride has two. One defensive option (blocking).
      Scarecrow - Arm has three attacks. Two defensive options (dodge, block).
      Scarecrow - Leg has two. One defensive option (block).

DMC1's expanded enemy roster, DMC3's numerous weapons, styles and story pacing, and DMC4's style switch in a fifth installment would be spectacular. especially if it comes with all five DMC4 SE characters out of the box, plus a new one original to the game, each with their own story, even if they're shorter.

    This is hands down the most exciting and sincere DMC review I've ever watched.
    Man tears listening to you praising both games in the right places where they deserve it.
    Anyway... Dante's Distortion. I've read in some places people saying it's gone in PC ports of either original DMC4 or SE, but (I admit I'm a noob, tried this on 1st run Devil Hunter mode) it seemed like it still works? Did away 1/2 or 2/3 of Dagon's health with 1 DRI (Distorted Real Impact) and got Savior's chest core in 2-3 DRI.

    Here's a random list of what I'd love to see Capcom do for Devil May Cry 5... Random, I know, but here you go!
    1. Make Dante the star. He is the embodiment of Devil May Cry, and we've all made clear why he's one of the best action heroes in gaming. Let him run loose again, give him more weapons, continue to tweak and perfect his moveset from DMC4 and expand upon it. Don't flood him with too much filler moves like in DmC, but give us enough from the start to be able to pull off SSStylish fairly. Also include more moves for his Devil Trigger form like flying on command. And if Capcom's going to make the game take place after DMC2, then they'd better write him as the Dante we know and love in the story. Cocky, witty, goofy, funny, sometimes grumpy and jaded like in the anime, but sincere and with as much heart as his half-human side can give.
    2. More level variety, unique areas for each flippin' character this time and some creative themes. Hell, they should allow the player to go into the Demon World again and explore increasingly hellish areas toward the end. Need I say more?
    3. Keep Nero. He needs a seperate campaign from Dante that can still tie in with his story if need be, and levels that are built around his Devil Bringer mechanic. Maybe give him more moves too, just enough for added variety.
    4. Allow all previous playable characters to return, preferably with their own levels and campaigns (maybe not as long as the star himself). Trish, Lady, Vergil, even Lucia. They can tweak Lucia's unique fighting style to better fit the more refined gameplay of 3 and 4, plus her Devil Trigger, kicks and knife attacks were cool.
    5. Include Sparda himself in some way. Whether it's an entire campaign based around him or something else, let us finally get to play as him. Maybe make his own story take place before he marries Eva, where he takes on Mundus and his demon army.
    6. Bring Mundus and Vergil back in the story. It's hinted at that Nero is the son of Vergil, so what if the story revolves around Dante enlisting the help of Nero and the others to storm hell and kill Mundus once and for all to free humanity from the demons that constantly pour through to the human world. Dante also promises Nero that he'll get to meet his father if they save him. And as for Mundus, he's most threatening without a true definable form, and he never truly materialised in DMC1, but when his statue body broke and his eye-riddled flesh poured out, you knew there was way more to him than that. Make his true form something really nightmarish and haunting, Just don't give us the shitty Lex Luthor wannabe from the reboot.
    7. This is more of an alternate idea, but... Just like Dante can switch between weapons on the fly, what if you could do the same with the characters? Hell it doesn't need to take up the entire game, it could be its own dedicated mode somehow, maybe a bonus to include in the Bloody Palace or even a "Final Battle" campaign.
    8. More bosses. A solid variety of bosses like what we got in Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. Each one as enjoyable if not more exciting than the last, each offering a unique yet thrilling and fair fight.
    9: Legendary Dark Knight mode. I'm loving it in DMC4SE, and I want it back in the next game, even on consoles. I don't know how, but it's gotta happen. Maybe a PS4 Pro and XBONE Scorpio feature?
    10. This is a personal one, but include some characters from the anime series somehow, like Patty, Dante's agent Morrison, and maybe even a cameo from the diseased villain Sid. They could all fit in somehow, I'm sure. Maybe make Patty own several shops where she can provide Dante and co with what they need, and Morrison could be the one who gives Dante info about a job, where they later discover Mundus is behind the disturbance? I dunno, I just really like the show... Madhouse should make another series.
    11. Don't pander to casuals by dumbing down the combat system in any way. Include a training mode for inexperienced players and a story chart in-game if they need to read up on the backstory of the previous games as abbreviated as possible
    12. Most importantly, include a scene or an interactive section where Dante gets to beat the living shit out of DmC Dante. That alone will forever cement DMC5 as game of the year all year every year.
    Feel free to discuss more ideas of what you would like to see in Devil May Cry 5, which is definitely going to be a thing because Capcom has no choice now.

      NintendanGX I love your idea of different campaigns for each character, capcom has done that setup before with resi 6 and in my opinion that worked very well. I say make Dante's full length like maybe a little shorter than dmc3 and then make the others maybe half that length. Then obviously they could make the story involve all the characters and have every campaign reveal things about the overarching plot. Also after dmc4 SE came out with 5 characters it would be a shame to abandon the work put into their movesets. I just hope the game happens haha

    This is the correct review of the devil may cry series. I saw your previous ones and saw a progression of a guy who skimmed through the games making first impression type of observations, commenting about some story details and such evolve into a guy who loves the franchise covering the at first glance minor but at core essential details, like how essential taunts were to the atmosphere and what made the combat system so great. This is by far the best review covering the series.

That said though Dante has a few lines that just make me want to choke him with a sock puppet, like in the first game he was a smart ass who'd give a wise ass remark but in DMC3 he never stops with the one liners. Some of his jokes are funny but not all of them.

      If it pleases anyone to hear, Sengoku BASARA, upon reaching its current incarnation, SB4, has a gameplay system that is almost as deep as DMC3 but for a slightly different genre.

      RiderWithTheScarf its a shame that people really wont be able to play sengoku basara because it being pegged as a dynasty warriors knockoff when it has an insane amount of depth rivaling devil may cry, but with more characters so i guess you could say it surpasses it. too many gamers are shallow now a days, always jumping to the "it looks like this game i played so i dont need to play this one" mentality.

    DMC4 may have better combat system but DMC3 is still the better game. DMC4 suffers from really bad level design, which along with the high learning curve, just makes the overall experience frustrating to say the least. Basically, you need to be good at the game in order to derive pleasure from it. DMC3 on the other hand is fun not matter how skilled you are as a player. I can die numerous times and I just want to keep on playing. 08:26 - 08:52 pretty much sums up why this is, perfectly. The game encourages you to get better, whereas DMC4 just makes everything feel like a chore.

      The ideal DMC game would pretty much be the core gameplay of 4 crossed with the style, design and amount of content from 3. Hopefully that's the game we'll get someday because they have the track record of being able to make the individual parts that could build up perhaps the best action game yet.

      LukeMM95 The most important thing of any game is gameplay, dmc4 have the best gameplay, so it''s the better game, just deal with it, maybe not the better experience, but like I said, it's gameplay what matters, even more on the hack and slash genre, dmc4 is the street fighter 3 of street fighter, the better street but not the most popular, or the most accessible, or the better experience for the normal/cassual players but they have the best gameplay.

    This was without a doubt one of your best video's to date. Not only are you providing some background information with the difference's between different versions/regions, you also give a little back story behind the game's development cycle and history. All that with solid facts and reasoning with good example's for show, really go to show just how great DMC3 & DMC4 are.
    I have to agree though with your last bit. As much as I love DMC4, it really does leave one wondering just how far they could have taken the series with that particle installment (given how the game we have is basically only 40% complete). Well with any luck, we'll see DMC5 at some point hopefully.

      Aha, going for that I see, very well *(puts on nerd glasses)* :
      Dante, apart from being a mixture of Cobra, Indiana Jones and a bit of Reuben Langdon himself, Reuben is not only the voice and MoCap of Dante, he was a Henshin Hero back in the day for the japanese Metal Hero show B-Fighter Kabuto, used for footage for Beetleborgs Metalix and along with his own stunt team consisting of Dan Southworth(Vergil and Credo's MoCap) he provided MoCap and suit acting for Kamen Rider Dragon Knight which Johny Young Bosch provided voice acting for the video game as Kit Taylor. Also, the Dreadnought form kinda references the B-Fighter Kabuto's more bulky fighters.
      Also Dante's Pandora and Coyote-A movesets are taken and updated from the movesets of Sengoku BASARA's No-Hime, a game where Date Masamune is based of Dante, and finally his Gilgamesh moveset now consists of moves found in SF Ken's Super / Ultra moves, who Reuben Langdon MoCaps, voices and acted as for SF4.
      And finally about Nero, he faces of against Credo, the big brother of Kyrie when he became a monster and had dialogue and a showdown reminiscent to what Ichigo went through when Orihime was attacked by her own brother-turned-hollow. Also, the way he handles his weapons and uses his own dexterity is akin to how Nube uses his hands when he exposes his Demon Hand, almost never touching anything human with his right demonic hand unless it's to heal and everything that is human and man-made with his left hand. Oh and the way he handles Red Queen and Yamato in the cutscenes, reminescent of how Ichigo fights with his Shikai and Bankai on crack.
      You turn sir.

    Those QTEs in TW101 were still kind of fun though... they shouldn't have been but..yeah..

    • @thelastgogeta
      @thelastgogeta 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the execution, purpose and consistency of the QTEs.
      For the most part, TW101 got them right by using them to cap off boss fights where the narrative will have to play out, having an funny fail state, tying them into Unite Morphs and having some of the ones that can occur during normal combat parts potentially be cancelled or have a reason to occur...
      Remember the Hah-Gonay (dragon like foes introduced a bit before Wonder White), the concept for opening up their armour when they close it wouldn't have worked nearly as well if they only required one press of the Y button as it would imply a complete lack of resistance. For it works, you can open it fast by bashing faster so you can get to attack it faster or alternatively not press anything and fail so you can get back to running around the environment.

      @TurboButton 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, stuff like drawing the shapes in QTEs works because it's still using the mechanics of the game. But I meant even in the examples he showed of pushing Ohrowchee [not sure about that spelling] against the building and stabbing it's eye they're a bit of a guilty pleasure.
      Especially the final QTE, that was just ridiculous.

    • @thelastgogeta
      @thelastgogeta 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got the spelling right... I think.
      I would argue that Ohrowchee's examples while not particularly tied to skill are preceded or followed by the player engaging in some intense combat or act as an effective segway regardless. Bosses for me, even in a skill driven game have a bit of lee way to dance on my expectations...
      Now, on that final QTE. That isn't something that I have an issue with given how many buttons we have been bashing from start to finish (for boss finishes), how we had a parallel with the The Wonderful Ones also bashing their buttons stupidly intensely and so on.
      What I definitely had an issue with was the flying section before it and the final stage of the boss. On Normal and Hard, we don't take that much damage (probably same damage on all modes Normal and up), but the control scheme is new not explained (it is something between standard flight and Platinum Robo but with no cursor or standard shooting). I die frequently on that despite it being short.
      I still have yet to get through it without using a continue (and I hate using continues in the game as they are super generous even if it takes half an hour or something to get back there - so many retries).
      Now the QTEs? They don't pretend to require skill for the most part and drop you back where you left off in most parts of the game (though the game could use a warning or more obvious cues for the few that can kill you even if the ones at the end of boss fights never seem to kill you).
      It is definitely a guilty pleasure of some sort, but TW101 manages to make it appealing in a lot of cases.

    Are you going to make a Bayonetta review? I'd like to hear what you think about that game, I really like the way how you approach your reviews, giving much more focus to the technical aspects of the game such as how good it runs and dissecting the combat mechanics to its core.
    And since Bayonetta is basically a DMC with boobs, I'd like to know what you think about that game. And The Wonderful 101 as well.

    Just as a heads up: I've heard tell of a mod for the PC version which DOES allow for dynamic, DMC4-esque style switching in DMC3.
    Yep.

    All those people saying DmC has good combat dont even know what good combat really is. They did not use half of DMC4's moveset and think DmC is better because it does not HAVE the half mentioned.

    You know it's kind of amusing to think this series plummeted twice before creating their series best games. DMC2 went on to become the road block before 3, then DmC happened, to becoming a distant nightmare before the Dawn that is 5. Hopefully it doesn't fail again and six is as good as 5.
