    विदर्भ के वंचित समुदाय के साधारण परिवार से निकलकर सूरज येंगड़े ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका जाकर पीएचडी की. फिर हार्वर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी में फेलो रहे. अब वे ऑक्सफोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी में शोधरत हैं और पढ़ाते भी हैं. देश और दुनिया के लंबे अनुभवों के आधार पर भारत को देखने का एक खास नजरिया उनके पास है. वे भारत को लेकर कुछ मामलों में आशावान है तो वहीं भारत की कई बातें उन्हें चिंतित करती है. खासकर आधुनिकता और वंचित समुदाय प्रश्न पर उनकी सोच बेहद दिलचस्प है. सुनिए उनसे कि हार्वर्ड और ऑक्सफोर्ड से भारत कैसा दिखता है. #Castematters #SurajYengde

    The sad reality is that OBC, and Dalit communities have so many layers with extremely discriminatory practices. This is being conveniently ignored by both the Right and Left. We only search for communities from a different category to blame.

      You are someone sane, so I gonna try to tell the context they are talking about, you see they are not talking about the blatant manifestation of casteism but a modern, more nuanced version followed by "upper caste". As a student of sociology this transition of lower castes going abroad and trying to tell their story from a different POV other than mainstream conversation on castes.
      Do you really think we as a Indians are totally done with castes when only ~75 % are functionally literate?
      Casteism still exists in our society that's very hush-hush, so it's a lie if you say we as a society don't practise casteism! Let's be real.

    • @patmclaughlin107
      @patmclaughlin107 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ajaxjaiswal3442 No, we are not done with castes or casteism, and I don’t think that’s anyone’s argument.
      I was pointing to the fact that we did make a lot of progress, and we are going in the right direction. It is not a stretch to conceive a future, in the next few decades, where caste becomes a lot less relevant and important.

    • @Shivumgrover
      @Shivumgrover ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ajaxjaiswal3442 as of today the only people who make caste an important issue are the one's who want to compensate for the older times (which is fine). Apart from that, I've not heard or seen anyone practicing casteism.
      I've seen people with Gita Vedas and Puranas in their homes. But I've not seen a single person with a manusmriti.
      Caste-ism is an obvious blotch on our culture, but it's going for good and it's not coming back again that's for sure. Hence I don't see why we keep bringing back something from our past that has no significant existence now, and that none of the Hindus care about anymore.

    @MrRk540 ปีที่แล้ว +108

    Are you going to bring Rajiv Malhotra as well? The video had to be a mosque!!!!
    I would have thought there would be some depth to the conversation. This guy is a poster child of a colonial vision and view. We will see where he goes. He is still young. At the end of the day, we need to govern with a view of providing people with equal opportunities to education, livelihood and justice. The outcomes will depend on the Individuals. For a guy that states we are mired in history he quotes from history throughout the conversation.
    As for modernity, we have a skewed view of it and what it means. For most Indians it is mere speaking Englais. Social mobility and right to livelihood are fundamental and have nothing to do with modernity. This is where I agree with Yengde. We need to promote local tongues, write science, math and other sciences in native tongue. What modernity is typically, is adoption of technology and using natural resources to economically grow. This can happen without adopting western tongue.
    Western view of Caste!!! Why should we care. A group that has committed the worst atrocities on natives and blacks. Do you think they ever wonder how India views them? LOL!!! Inferiority complex galore.
    What we forget is to hold a mirror to the west. What they have done in terms of destroying native civilizations and people and marginalized them to a point where they currently hold access and use of those resources has never happened anywhere. That implies they do not have any moral high ground. We continue to have the romantic view of the west as Modern STATES!!! Hamara naya dristi kahan hai?
    This is though changing in how BJP and Jaishankar are standing up. We need to change quite a bit there. Yengde did not have to go to Harvard or Cambridge to study caste system and give caste commentary. YET!!!
    For a guy that says we need an Indic view, he speaks about and quotes only western view. He has not quoted even one of the Dasas, Basavanna, Ramanuja etc. Yengde is doing exactly what most Indians do. They go out for justice instead of fighting it out in India. The western view matters so much and the affirmation a necessity.
    As for practicing a religion, it is not the same as saying I believe in the caste system. Hinduism is not a dogmatic religion where you need to take every word literally and believe every word. You pick and choose and leave out what does not agree with you. I understand the perspective that they are coming from. After all, Yengde and his interviewer are presenting the victim view. I am ok with what their opinion about religion and religious practice is. I am glad later they realize that they cannot be victims forever. The card does not work.
    As for discrimination in the US on caste basis. It is a cooked-up story. How do they think it is practiced? Most folks in the US are Christian Protestant. Cisco has been the one instance. It does not make it a wide practice. Yengde goes onto explain how caste discrimination has been internalized via different mechanisms of Sanskriti, language etc. GEE man!!! Laughable. This is working in the US because of the place where US and the west is today in implementation of Critical Race Theory. Ask Yengde to give examples of widespread caste practice in the US or in the West. It is interesting to see how Yengde paints the entire savarnas as caste discriminating. Unbelievable!!!
    Endogamy is a choice. Endogamy is a mutual choice. The issue is when people choose to violate this agreed endogamy. There we can be a bit more approving and should be.

    2. You speak of understanding the nuanced layers of casteism, if you truly believe so, do you even study or understand that there are layers and layers of separation within dalit community?? Instead of parroting the propaganda prepared by British when they wanted to divide and rule India, you can study the roots of endogamy.
    We all must understand the roots of untouchability. As we saw during Covid, untouchability in a culture starts with large scale pandemics and epidemics. If untouchability didn't serve an existential purpose, it wouldn't become a part of the culture in the first place. Access restrictions to shared places such as water bodies only come into effect when there is an epidemic. When there is an endemic, people learn to stay away from others and practices of untouchability, access restrictions enter the society.

    Sooraj is perfectly right and logical. I had listened scores of talks. Even on subject of British Rule the learned Shree Shashi Tharoor is bias against the English. But if English were not here We and Pakistan and Bangladesh, Nepal wouldn't have been democracies. We wouldn't have been technological advanced. We might would have been divided in many kingdoms.

      Not necessarily bro.
      Even there was no nation of Germany as we know today. But Bismarck bought it together in 20th century.
      Similar thing could have happened in India. Why do you ASSUME otherwise?

      Japan was a very isolated feudal society. The Europeans forced them to trade with them and after lot of fight/resistance Japanese opened up and started trading. The Japanese never allowed Europeans to bully them like British and Americans did with China (Opium Wars). They realized Europeans were advanced and little by little Westernized their society, bought technology and advanced themselves. Something similar could have been done in India too.

    Some people are claiming that casteism is slowly going to be irrelevant,,, it's like becoming an ostrich in the face of the danger,, if it were not still there,, these much educated people might not have been talking about it,,if education could make you accepted within upper strata,, then these people would have been indifferent about caste but the fact remains that casteism still exists for lower castes in an unspoken way in urban areas but openly and brutally in rural areas, caste supremacy still haunts and untouchability still exist...and India on the path of becoming Hindu-rashtra will clearly demarcate castes even more aggressively... it's sad but it's truth...
