I read this headcannon, it said that Harry bought Hagrid a wand (which wouldn’t be legal but okay) and Hagrid’s patronus, after learning the spell, was Hedwig and it made me cry because it was so sweet

They didnt use hippogriffs to fly to the ministry because thestrals have an amazing sense of direction and know exactly where to go once told. Also flying on hippogriffs would take some time, I think, because there has to be mutual respect first while thestrals are very gentle.

The demeanor of the creatures was my guess as well. An invisible-yet-gentle death pegasus seems like a better idea to me than a potentially volatile eagle horse.
That said, if they were going into open battle in the sky I'd opt for the hippogryphs since it would be *badass*... And cuz we don't have much information on how dangerous a thestral might be in a fight.
Maybe also to stay invisible. A flying person on an, for most people on the world (cause let's be honest not many people see the exact moment someone dies), invisible creature on a night sky is almost invisible, but huge grey bird-horses could be much easier spotted, even in the night.
They left the thestrals in the alley when the gang entered the ministry, so muggles probably would not notice 6 invisible creatures. But would definitely notice 6 very visible and easy to anger hippogriffs. Also it says that the thestrals are incredibly fast. Making the journey to London in something like an hour. Note that Hogwarts is probably at least 300 miles away. Hippogriffs are not nearly as fast

If my patronus was a spider I'd actually run *toward* the dementors away from it. Just the idea of a *GIANT SPIDER* protecting me makes about as much sense of Umbridge and Snape hookin up! 😂😂

I am of the opinion that since the memory he draws on to cast his patronus is meeting lily or something involving lily, it was always a doe. There is a decision to be had as to whether you patronus can have a form before you are able to cast it though, it seems to me that the point of this discussion is moot as it would be impossible to tell with 100% certainty what the form would be without casting it. I wonder if the memory you draw in plays a role in the form of your patronus, surely tonk's changed because the memory she draws on changed from whatever it was before to something involving lupin, possibly their wedding. And Harry's memory is of his parents thus the stag

5:32 There's a very easy to figure out reason: The hippogriffs are much, MUCH, more temperamental than the thestrals, and there's no way to be sure that they would've let all of them ride on their backs all the way to the MoM.
Plus the kids did not know where the ministry was and the thestrals have an amazing sense of direction. Also they do not know where hagrid keeps the hippogriffs since they were always brought to class and we never run into them in all our forays into the forest with the trio, but the thestrals came to them drawn by the scent of blood.. Convenient plot device but whatever.
The reason why Harry and company used thestrals instead of hippogriffs (lol how do we even write that) was bc the thestrals came to them because Harry and Hermione smelled of blood. Also because Luna kept insisting on using thestrals and bc thestrals know where to go if you just tell them. Like, the trio, Neville, Luna and Ginny had no idea where the ministry of magic was and if they decided to use thestrals they would just need to tell the thestral where to go and they're off. I mean, maybe hippogriffs would know where to go but it would've been too complicated to look for them and then bow down, hope they accept you, etc when the thestrals were right there. Remember, Harry was in a rush to save Sirius.

I think it’s stated in the book that thestrals are able to locate exactly where you need to go
None of them really knew how to get to London and so the thestrals were the better option been awhile since I reread the books and don’t know which page but I believe it was stated during Hagrids first lesson back in book 5

think about it:
it is a venomous, armoured, flying creature with an attitude that smells, which is right up swagrids alley, it has giant in the name, thus hinting at hagrids "secret" nature without it needing to be an actual giant and it is a creature really only swagrid could find any redeeming values in.
I was thinking the same. Especially since Hagrid raised him from an egg, quite possibly his first pet. He entroduce him to his wife and tried helping him through his sickness before burying him. Also, Hagrid's seemed to be kind of an outsider in the realm of Hogwarts and misunderstood. With his height, he may even seem intimidating. Seems like he could relate very much to a spider.

If it would be an acromantula, I'm glad he can't cast a patronus. 😱 I'm voting dragon for Hagrid. After Aragog's death, he said the others were acting pretty nasty. I don't think he has the same love for all acromantula(s?) as he does for literally every dragon he's ever seen.
Jn Msks maybe it would've been an aromantula up until Aragog died but after that Hagrid's love of acromantulas faded and his patronus changed to a dragon
he still loved acromantulas. at the Battle of Hogwarts when they penetrated the castle, he jumped in and shouted "dont hurt them" even forgetting that there was a battle going on.

CroakPad I think it's more like Cerberus are native to Greece and had myths based on them
considering Kerberos means "spotted" and "spot" one of the most common cute-dog names, it's not too far fetched that the hound of hades, guardian of the underworld would be called fluffy. however Kerberos is usually depicted as being part snake, usually having snakes coming from his back, being his tail, or being his manes/more heads (tho he has also been depicted/described as having 50/100/2/1 head(s) a venomous mouth, three tongues/backs/bodies/tails...) so there's no way to be certain.

Thestrals sense of direction was probably the reason they chose them over the hippogriffs. Being able to tell the thestral where they wanted to go would have been easier than trying to direct the hippogriffs to London

So since Thestrals can only be seen by those who've witnessed death, does that mean most people can't see them in Patronus form? What about someone who's Patronus is a Thestral (ie Ben), but hasn't seen death- would they go through life thinking that they don't have a Patronus?

I don't think someone who hasn't witnessed death would have a Thestral as a Patronus. But in regards to other people seeing their Patronus, I think they'd see some sort of shapeless light or shadow where the Thestral Patronus would be.

A thestral as a patronus. Interesting. Does that mean that if you haven't seen someone die in front of your eyes, that you can't see your own patronus? How will you know if you cast the spell?
Nyntje 347 a patronus is a projection, not the actual thing. So I think you would see it. And probably freak out if you don't know what it is.

If the dementors fled you would know it worked, also I don’t think anyone who hasn’t witnessed death would have a thestral as a patronus because the usually are animals based on your personality or memories, not just some random animal

When J said that Fluffy was (loosely paraphrasing) a giant dog of the underworld, and then that he was sent 'back' to Greece, it made me think. Three-headed dog. Greece. "Dog of the underworld." What if Fluffy is Cerberus? Or one of Cerberus's
relatives? It would make sense.
That's what he's supposed to represent, I don't know if he is actually Cerberus but it's possible. Especially looking from a literature enthusiast's standpoint (aka me) any time you see a trap door, or a tunnel going down, or anything like that, you should immediately think UNDERWORLD
U, Me, and Katie B I do not believe that Greek mythology - or, for that matter, any mythology - exists in the Wizarding World. In "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" (book), some beasts included in it were the Chimaera and the Hippocampus, two well-known mythological Greek beasts, with no however mention of Poseidon, the God of the Sea and Horses, or Echidna, the Mother of Monsters, or Typhon, the Father of Monsters. Though, I do believe that certain Greek Heroes exist, like Bellerophon, the Hero who slayed the Chimaera on a Pegasus, as it talks about the only known instance of a Chimaera being killed was when a wizard killed it while on a Winged Horse. This goes to show that the Greek Heroes might actually have been wizards. Though, if the Greek Gods, or any Gods/Godesses in the Wizarding World are real, for that matter, I do not know,

They don't use the hipagrifs because the thestrals can go any where you tell them to so even if you dont know where Hogwarts is in relation to anything the thestral can still get you there.
Good points, also the thestrals were just who happened to show up. They were attracted to the smell of Grawp's blood on Harry and Hermione, so they were the quickest and first ride available.

Despite very few opportunities to practice, Hagrid seems pretty good at magic. We never see him mess up a spell or need a second try, so I don't know why JK says he wouldn't be able to cast a patronus, especially since Harry seems to teach every member of the DA how to.

If I could choose Hagrid's patronus I would say a type of dog, possibly something like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Staffys are known for being wonderful family animals and for their loyalty and energy. This description does kind of fit Hagrid, even though I do agree with this video.
In dog terms I see him as a great pyrenees for sure, huge and soft and cuddly (and kind of a big baby, in the best way)
Yes, I agree! He is a fiercely loyal friend. Remember when the wizards set his house on fire while Fang was in there? Or how he became when anyone insulted Dumbledore? He is only angry in defense of others and what's right. I think a Staffy makes a great patronus for Hagrid.

Hagrid 's Patronus is an owl. He gave Hedwig to Harry. An owl symbolizes wisdom and Hagrid is wise and Kind. Also Hedwig was white like a Patronus. In a way, this gift was a way of symbolizing his friendship to Harry and that he will always be there to help him and be a friend - Like an Owl. A Patronus is used to guard/ guide those who need help, so by giving Harry a white Owl, Hagrid is symbolically giving his patronus to harry, to guide him in times of hardship. Like Snape did with his Patronus, Hagrid is doing the same - only Hagrid cant't do the complicated spell so he does this by using a real life owl, and the love of a real animal to be a friend to Harry. Hedwig is a symbol of Hagrid's Patronus. It's quite poetic.
Owls are also whimsical and wizard-like but deep down are very wise. Normally an owl would be the most respected figure of the forest, and greatly esteemed like a teacher and doctor- and Hagrid is like a healer too. Hagrid is very much an outsider to the human world and he doesn't really have a place in society. But he belongs to the animal world and is respected by the forest creatures. He is like the owl of the forest. He is not a spider, he does not creep about, or spin webs or follow trails like spiders do. Also he seems quite lonely, so why would his Patronus take the form of something so scary like a spider? He does not want to scare people away, he wants to invite them in for tea like an owl would do. He is the least spidery person. spiders are scary - He is not scary. He is an Owl. The white Owl he gives Harry, is a genius way of communicating this.
I always thought it might be a bear. He's big and hairy, very protective of his "cubs".

My favorite animal has been a Lynx for ages and when I did the Pottermore partonis test, it was a Lynx! That held me away and now I'm sure that the creators of that test put a lot of work into it.
Seems to happen time to time. My girlfriend works with horses and her whole life is based around horses. And you guessed it. She got a horse patronus. One of the most fun moments ive had! Her face was like ; "No way..."
Mine's a Leopardes. Would have loved a otter but hey Leopards are beautiful.
ya well, my favourite animal is a Raven and/or Crow, I would have been quite happy with any other bird though too (I owned parrots once, really like birds).

Alex Bucur I read that the horses are a rather common patronus to get, as they are rather common amongst the wizarding world. None is supposedly exactly the same, but the family of the horses rely to human beings a lot. So it would seem that the first law about patronusses seems to be in play here; there is something about your personality and that of horses that work well together and may only come up when needed

I think Hagrid's "awakened secret self" has nothing to do with the fact that he's half giant. Yes he was upset when that "secret" was brought to light, but I still feel like he's mostly accepting of his genetics. What he's not completely ok with is the fact that he's not a "certified" wizard. He keeps the fact that his broken wand is still always on his person and somehow able to perform at least simple magic a very big secret. And no one seems to notice that he can perform those spells silently. He's a wizard who's not allowed to be a wizard. So I think his awakened secret self would have more to do with being a full fledged, fully trained and accepted magic user than who his mother was.
This is why I think after the end of the series when Kingsley Shacklebolt is made Minister of Magic, Hagrid is allowed to finish his education taking any of the classes he wants and is allowed to have a wand.

Just thought about this and I don't think Harry actually saw Quirrel die. I'm pretty sure he passed out and then Dumbledore came to save him so he didn't actually see it happen. Harry wakes up in the hospital wing and warns dumbledore about quirrel and the dumbledore has to tell him that he died. With his mom this may be sort of a technicality but even though he was in the room we don't know for sure that he saw her actually die. I think when they talk about this they just say Harry remembers seeing a flash of green light. Cedric is the first person he actually sees die.
He has to understand the death he witnessed. He didnt understand his mothers death at all and he didnt truly witness the death of Quirrel. With Cedric he first understood it for real after he had been a summer at the Dursley's. That is why he didnt see the thestrals when going home from Hogwarts.
And I think I read somewhere that Rowling has said that he didn't see them in the end of goblet of fire when they went back to the train because it would be stupid to put a new mystery in the very end of a book that you could only explain in the next one.

At the beginning of the video, I definitely thought Hagrid would have a mother grizzly bear patronus. He is very loving, and if you mess with the people he cares for, he's gonna defend them. But I definately agree with J's theory!

I think Aragog's size in Chamber of Secrets was due to his legs being spread out, where as they're curled up after his death. Not to mention, he probably looked bigger compared to smol Harry and Ron as opposed to older Harry.

I think Jo is grossly underestimating Hagrid. I agree he couldn't produce a patronus but only because he hasn't been taught how. The magic he performs with a broken wand at least proves he was talented. I think it would have been Arogog also or perhaps something to do with Dumbledore.

Thank you, seriously. Like the fact Hagrid can get a wand that was snapped in pieces to even do what he wants shows he has amazing latent ability. If he was allowed to complete his training he'd be a powerhouse. Nothing pisses me off more than the misspelled birthday cake in the first film - he can't spell Voldemort, which I doubt a lot of people would be able to if they only ever heard the name and not seen it written down a bunch of times like we all did. In the books Hagrid's letters to Harry are always spelled correctly. The movies make him out to be the oaf people like the Malfoys say he is.
Also took issue with Jay not mentioning Hagrid was framed. That's why he lost his education, not because of something he did, but what Riddle did. It was admirable of him to protect Aragog, and that doesn't make his expulsion remotely his fault.
Mac Curran I know she wrote him haha but the way she talks about the characters- and has stated many times- is that they kind of existed on their own in her head and she just wrote it down. She created him but isn't him if that makes any sense? Probably not haha but yea all fiction really so I guess every theory is valid. She even talks about how Dumbledore was a voice that came from the back of her head and that he helped her a lot. :) But I also totally get what you're saying and I like that you said it without being super rude haha :)

I'm a Hufflepuff and yet my patronus is the proud Hippogriff. It used to be a Husky which is probably more like my personality, though I do have some similarities to Hippogriffs. So I think my patronus is the way it is because of the people I love. I tend to love proud people who don't let others in easily. I need my patronus to protect me, but I also need it because it needs me. 😊

I got a Dragon for a Patronus. It seems the complete opposite of me. I'm a quiet, introverted guy yet I got a fierce, destructive creature as a Patronus. I kinda like it.

Before watching the video I would guess Hagrids patronus would be a dragon or a spider. Dragon seem like it couldn't be an option because patronuses are usually more "simple creatures". So I guess my money is on spider. Aragog was a pretty big deal for Hagrid after all.
