Tsunami 2004

  • Dear interested, for the greater majority in middle-europe it had not been obvious, up to that very catastrophe, exactly what characteristics are shown by a tsunami (for instance 3 sequential waves). The video actually depicts the third wave of the tsunami as it impacts the bay of Kathanoi, which was not directly situated in the worst hit regions (such as Kao Lak and Patong Beach). Therefore it was not apparent that a natural disaster was occurring (I believe to no one who was there at that time). After the first wave people gathered and set up their motor bikes again, normal life seemed to continue as if nothing bad happened. A second (smaller wave) came along the street. I understand your view of me being light-headed, going closer to the coastal region to make a movie. This was due to my little knowledge of how such a catastrophe takes its course and I think that many people lost their lives due to this lack of knowledge! Some were even entering the beach area. I must admit that today, as wide-spread media representation has covered this event I do not know what the hell has driven me to go there and that an enormous amount of luck, as well as the "lid of the pool maintenance shaft" have saved my life. Hope I could answer some open questions. HJK

    This video really demonstrates how difficult it can be to see a tsunami coming at you. It's no wonder so many people are killed by them when there is no warning. I mean, if you're looking for some big wave out there, you're dead before you realize where the danger is actually coming from.

      Well first of all India and Sri Lanka would not have felt the earthquake at all. It was all the way across the Indian Ocean some 2500 miles away. Thailand would have only felt a minor quake as the epicenter was far to their south. As for Banda Aceh not to mention pretty much everywhere else in the Indian Ocean basin in 2004, there was simply no abundance of education regarding the connection between earthquakes and tsunamis, so your comment is pretty uninformed and insensitive.@@BullRadu

      @@nickthestick26 you should do a bit more research before you speak because the earthquake was felt in Indonesia, bangladesh, india, malaysia, maldives, myanmar, singapore, sri lanka and thailand. and what i mean felt, is by peopel feeling the earthquake, not just machines cause if we are talking about machines, the earthquake was felt all the way to the US. clearly you have never been in a situation where you felt an earthquake, cause if u were, you wouldn't be talking shit. so please educate yourself before start talking just cause you feel like it. also, the earthquake was only 300 miles of thailand so they felt it really hard since it was 9.1-9.3 scale.

      The 2004 tsunami was a once in 5000 years event. Thailand isn't near the Pacific ring of fire but the 9.1 earthquake sent tsunamis around the Indian Ocean. Was unheard of for most of the countries impacted. Even Indonesia had no preparation for such an event. When the sea retreated, people went to inspect. In aceh they were on the floor avoiding falling buildings when the waves came. No one had ever seen 23m waves before.

    Videos such as this one are so frustrating to watch and make me wonder how many people would’ve survived, had they understood what the Ocean was doing and fled!! The very minute I’d observe the surf being pulled away suddenly or witnessed a bigger than usual wave forming out in the distance, I’m getting as far away from the beach as I possibly could!

    • @futurez12
      @futurez12 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's easy to say that now. At the time, this hadn't been witnessed on camera all around the world; it was something never seen before. It makes sense now _why_ the water would recede so quickly like that, but _nobody_ understood at the time. There's not one single video of someone recognizing what was going on, until it was too late. Nobody knew, and following the earthquake, there were no tsunami warnings either. Look what's just happened in Japan, a lesser earthquake and there's immediate tsunami warnings.

  • @CyrusNixes
    @CyrusNixes 15 ปีที่แล้ว +136

    Yeah, the tsunami "wave" in this video is probably only 8 or 9 ft. In other areas like Khao Lak the wave was 33ft and it came in as a big breaking wave. And of course people aren't stupid - they were all at beach resorts and most of the dead were good swimmers. The water just moves too fast and is full of too much debris. In other areas the waves were 100ft high - its easy to understand how people died there.

      Sure, but common sense says the ocean waves shouldn't flood into hotel lobbies or swimming pools. Seeing the beach chairs and umbrellas being swept away should be a warning sign, no? Or are you going to magically stop the ocean from coming towards you? The reality is too many people think they're invincible, with the "eh nothing will happen to me mentality."

    Sadly, this and other videos of the reaction of people to the initial signs of the approaching tsunami illustrate the lack of knowledge that they had at that time. We know that the water drawing away from the shore is an absolutely clear warning that a tsunami is coming. They didn't realize that. We know that the distance that the water goes down is the same as the height that the wave will be above the normal water level. They had no idea. We know that the wave can come in as a wall of water or as a massive surge of water up an estuary and over onto the land on both sides. That knowledge was limited then.

      Personnellement, je ne le sais pas, dans toutes les vidéos, je vois que la vague n'est pas haute ou dangereuse pour noyer une ville entière ou noyer des gens.Apparemment, ce n'est qu'une vague d'environ un demi-mètre de haut, je ne sais pas, et je n'ai jamais vu une vague de tsunami ni sa véritable hauteur. Si cela se passait devant moi, par exemple, comme ici, j'aurais pensé qu'il s'agissait d'un petit tsunami qui ne nécessitait pas d'évasion.

    Dear Interested, this is the video by a guy who looked at death face-to-face and still dis not know it was time to RUN and SAVE HIMSELF. He lived to tell the tale and wrote the long paragraph on the rioght hand side. You should not try to imitate this person.

    When you see it from a distance, people feel it's small and when it approaches the coast, you realize that you should've run.
    Also, people think it's easy to identify the warning signs of tsunami because the coast doesn't always pull away.

    I dreamt this very thing the night it happened. I dreamt I was in a pool, staring out at the blue ocean and dirty water started entering the pool. I woke up to find my mother in law watching the news about the aftermath. I didn’t know that was what I was dreaming until I started seeing these videos. I never dreamt a wave or debris from the wave. I had a similar dream a few years before about 9/11 the night before it happened.
