It’s scary how silently but quickly the Tsunami works, it’s like if you aren’t paying attention, then you might just be swallowed up in 30 seconds.

An amazing thing that I learned when I visited the Miyagi region a few years ago: The Japanese have standing stones on these hills that were carved centuries ago. On the stones, a warning is written to future generations - "The tsunami reached up to here. Do not build below this line."
Of course, centuries later with no major tsunami incidents, the Japanese had forgotten and built many coastal towns below the tsunami line. And then this one happened.
Still, I find it very clever that the ancient Japanese would leave a warning to their descendants in this way. I don't know of any other seafaring culture that has done something like that. Very wise, what great foresight!
In early 1980s, took a road trip up the coast from Yokohama to Misawa and yes stone was in place near temple. Didn’t really comprehend what that meant at the time. Now I pay attention to the tsunami signage along California coast.

This is a water treatment facility and the wave from the Tsunami entered the underground pipes and being a small diameter the wave pushed up in to the facility before the actual wave itself reached it. Very interesting capture.

@@april926 It’s called going into shock. Not everyone responds the same way to tragedy because it registers differently and at different points. The excitement could just be that one can’t believe this is happening and though it may seem exciting at first it’s because their brain hasn’t or can’t process the devastation it’s about to cause. I tend to freeze during an emergency; I can’t physically move. There have been a couple of times that I froze and if my friends wouldn’t have shouted for me to run and get out of the way, I don’t know where I’d be.
They were cracking jokes, and were also amazed at how things were developing. Think of it this way, they know things are going to be destroyed, so you might as well enjoy seeing nature in action

I lived in Iwaki after 2 years of the tsunami and it was heartbreaking to see how the city was affected. Even after this time, the beachfront neighborhood was still empty. The city is amazing! Makes me so happy to see in that year I was there, how the city reconstructed and still strong. I miss Iwaki so much 💕
Pretty amazing how quickly some places in Japan were repaired and rebuilt.
I am Japanese. At that time I was still in elementary school third grade and I was doing music class at that classroom then. I suddenly felt that there was a big tremor and it was shaking for a long time. It was frightening. People in the afflicted areas feel a bigger shake and I am sad if I think that they suffered from the earthquake. We should not be crushed for such a deceased person for those who died. We will not lose. Absolutely stand up.

It was a bad day all around. The earthquake, then you barely have time to get your bearings and the tsunami warnings go up. Then, once at higher ground, it's freezing cold and snowing as you watch your entire town float by. That's just too much.

Im a first responder in Tornado Alley and have responded three times to tornados. One of the first feelings is, where do we start, it can be overwhelming. I cannot even imagine what this was like for responders. The destruction, water, electrical and debris hazards, where do you even start?
Not to mention how much time do rescuers have until the NEXT tsunami wave hits, how many waves will there be, and has the the highest wave already hit or not. (The answers to each of those 3 questions are different for every tsunami.)

I can’t even begin to fathom what the people of Japan still live with. It reminds me of my brother and sister-in-law. They’ve lost five babies, and she’s now 7 months pregnant and has COVID. They’ve been too terrified to plan for the baby actually surviving. Their previous traumas have robbed them of the joy of expectancy. Same with the people of Japan. There’s a difference between Tsunami’s and tidal waves, Tsunami’s are very low and travel really fast we’re as Tidal waves are pretty much a wall of water that travel across the ocean slower.

I am Japanese, and when this tsunami came, I was 11 years old. I was shocked by the news that many people died in a few hours of the day, and many people lost family and friends. It's been eight years already, but we think that it is an event that everyone should not forget, not to mention the Japanese. Please do not handle lightly because it is a story of a country far away.

I live in the Pacific northwest in america.... we are 500yrs pass due for a earthquake larger then what Japan had that day. Seattle is suppose to fall into the Puget sound, we are surrounded by the cascade mountains, with only 2 passes (Steven's and snoqualmie pass) as our only exit to the eastern side of Washington, we also have Canada's border which is 3 hrs away which if assuming correct will be opened up for us to evacuate to so we can make our way back into the USA via idaho's border, we also have ferries, but they will have no docks to allow people to walk or drive their cars onto, we also have Oregon state, but theres a huge bridge that passes over a huge river as its main access into both states and the other ways are via very windy and blind curve mountains. Locals in Seattle that are born and raised here have 2 drills we practiced monthly, fire and earthquake drill... wasnt till I was 15 that I realized not all of America does earthquake drills. I've personally survived 2 big quakes, been alive to see mt st Helens blow some ash in 2015, oso landslide killed 45-50 people and my cousin lived less then 3 miles from it. I've been raised to expect locals to be first responders here, all locals are raised and trained to know how to handle a earthquake, but the scary thing for us is..... those who live through it we wont have a home left. Seattle is presumed to collapse as its half man made on very soft landfill, we have mt st Helen, mt rainier, mt Baker all currently quiet in their own way, but the big one as the locals call it is expected to probly call Helen to loose her ash again, Rainier if she awakens will devastating in her own as shell wipe all any valley west of the cascades, and no one knows how Baker will do. but with that one being up north could easily block Canada for the locals down here, and depending on where the big one hits, it could trigger a tsunami that wiped out all the towns along the Pacific Ocean including our naval bases and military bases. Locals dont expect help from the outside for weeks due to how much damage will be, our infrastructures are ancient compared to modern cities should be, the east side will probly be able to intact to a point, but they literally are running monthly emergency drills now in town and all locals are being asked to volunteer in it to keep our training up. But in the end, our devastation here is bordering on making half of Washington state unlivable for years due to how bad the rebuild will be and we have the longest floating bridge and the second longest floating bridge in the world that connects us into seattle.... those break and the locals in Seattle are screwed.

Although there were warnings, I don't think anyone realized how bad it would get. In many other videos, you hear people saying "wow, amazing" in a cheerful manner. But the moment that water went over the barriers you could hear the emotional pain in their voices. "What is this? What is this hell?" Just really in shock that their towns were gone.
Lots of people got swept in with their homes because of this and many people were never found unfortunately.

Many Japanese buildings rest upon blocks and are not affixed to the ground, and are meant to move to resist earthquakes. Seeing an entire building elegantly float in a circle carried off by the sea probably isn't something people ever expect to see though.
@@ProvocativeSloth That's fascinating......I once watched a documentary where they built a traditional wooden Japanese structure and then tested it's structural integrity by putting through an artificial earthquake test. It stood up to the test quite well. It makes sense to prioritize minimizing earthquake destruction but what kind of traditional technology did the Japanese develop to resist the tsunami?

@@koy2536 yes it is attach to the floor and it justs depend where you build structures on different soils that react to particular things and it's not surprising bc trees have roots and depending on how old or young it is depends how strong the roots are and the trees don't look too young so the tree roots are strong it's either the building was poorly made (people didnt look into it) or the tsunami was that strong

WOW to think...you not only have to worry about an earthquake, but a TSUNAMI too? OMG! I think the BLESSING in it is that they have structured high ground to retreat to, but it has to be agonizing to see your livelihood swept away by an enormous wave. I pray there were no casualties and EVERYONE is SAFE.
