To me, this was one of the saddest, tragic and most cruel episodes of nature against mankind of our times. I admire the bravery of the Japanese people for being capable of withstanding and recovering from this terrible event. My most sincere condolences for people that up to this day grieves their loved ones.

You haven't seen enough. There were earthquakes that destroyed more.
The 2004 tsunami had almost 10 times the number of deaths. There just wasn't smartphones at that time so we didn't get as much footage. Both are awful though.

I ’m Japanese and my husband lived by the city in this video.
He was in elementary school at the time.He still says he can't see the video from this time. I myself experienced that earthquake, and I scream every time the earthquake early warning system goes off. We will never forget this memory for the rest of our lives.

Years after this disaster, I watch these videos and weep for the lives lost and for the families that grieve.
There's beautiful stories in the tragedy of 28000 lost. Such as a grandma being found alive in her car late the next day and people on a roof pointing to people on the ground for the helicopter to rescue them first. Children being fed first even when food was very low. Communal cooking when supplies did reach them. The hardest thing about this was that it was so cold. It was actively snowing in some of the archived footage.
The 9.0 quake lasted a full 6 minutes in some places and there were over 200 after shocks, some as strong as a level 5 quake themselves.
People said the water came in further than it ever had before. Many thought they were safe in their attics and their entire homes were swept away.
It's immeasurable loss. 311 was a terrible lesson in go further, get higher. 😢

The sheer force of that water is mind boggling. There was more than one surge wave that hit shore. Entire towns were wiped out. People who didn't get out of the way in time were lost. A few people who got caught in water managed to climb to safety when debris lodged onto a building. Some were swept away in their cars. Terrifying.
At 43:20 time code mark, about a dozen people emerge on the street; running in the direction of the camera, from around a corner... the water was traveling twice as fast as they were running. I hope they made it to safety but; realistically, I doubt that any of the people made it as they were running too slow to escape the fast moving tsunami wave.

You are right, a Tsunami is not a wave and too many people still think that today. A Tsunami is a surge and a rise in sea level and the water just keeps on coming. To understand the power of water just look at the grand canyon which was created by melt water from the ice age.

There was a hospital that had elderly people in it and some patients too sick to be moved and the nurses stayed with those patients. All of them died. The bravery of those nurses. 😢😢😢

また、避難先でも津波に関する正確な情報が入手できなかったことで「もう津波は来ないのでは？」と楽観的な判断をして、極めて危険な状況に陥ったケース（仙台市閖上中学の校舎に避難していた人たちが、体育館に移動してそこに津波が襲撃、間一髪全員が校舎の上層階に駆け上がって難を逃れた）もありました。
車で避難している最中に、道路より高い防潮堤が裏目となり、津波の接近に気が付かなかったり、激しい渋滞に巻き込まれても車を乗り捨てることをせず犠牲になった方も相当数いると言われています。

I remember when this occurred. I was big into Word of Warcraft and a friend of mine (or, guild-mate) lived in Japan, I have never heard from her after this happened.

A friend of mine from UK, he goes to Thailand every year in December to avoid the cold UK winters.
He was there when the boxing day Tsuinami hit. Him and some other friends of mine. He saved a woman who was literally being washed past his hotel entrance by reaching down and plucking her, by HER HAIR, out of the water.
The next day, my friend who owned the hotel and bar, he'd lost DOZENS of friends, who had in turn lost hundreds of family, never even to the seen again to bury.
Sad times. Mother nature rules us all.
After all these years, and watching these videos I can't help but imagine what these poor souls experienced then. My heart still grieves and rejoices at the same time, especially for those who were caught atop buildings, watching helplessly and fearfully as another building was swept away past them
For me, even though I have zero affiliation with Japan, it'll always be a tragedy I'll remember because it happened on my birthday. RIP everyone who lost their lives that day.
03:50 there is an old man on the left by the yellow sign, 04:00 in hes a little closer in front of the house with green shutters next to some vending machines, at 04:16 that whole house gets pushed forward in the direction that the old man was standing. Truly tragic, cannot imagine how those people felt standing there knowing they couldn't do anything for the man, and how he must have felt knowing he wasn't going to make it.

@@noxianmind706 Most of the victims and survivors underestimated , they've been warned for a while. Its always like that, thinking that the flow of the water is too slow, that they have time...thats a tsunami. This one take them offguard. Now they're really scared about any possible tsunami.
@@noxianmind706 no he didn't underestimate it ,he was an elderly so of course he couldn't walk uphill roads like younger people. He accepted his fate and swept away. most people died because they had very little time to rescue. Some places only had 6-10 minutes of time.
His family wanted this footage to be released so other people would evacuate as soon as they hear the warning, and not stop to pick things up

I never understood how so many people died before, but seeing this has really made it clear. You think your building is strong but the ocean can knock it over with cars or another building like it is playing dominos. So sad for all the families who lost loved ones.
I’ve seen this footage over and over. I wonder where that old man ended up, the one shuffling so slowly as the ocean tore through the streets so fast behind him. He hops up on a pole as if that will help, but he needed to run. I think about him a lot.

The second clip is terrifying, the sound and the panic, how the fast the water is moving, its tragic and I feel for the people who survived it and for those who didnt as well

Some towns were completely razed. The ground built up higher then the town will rebuild so no longer on a flood plain.

Para mi, es la peor tragedia natural que ha pasado en nuestro tiempo. Es absolutamente desgarrador todo el horror y las pérdidas de humanos, animalitos y de cosas materiales. Por momentos, hasta llego a odiar esta clase de naturaleza, pero se que es completamente inevitable, nuestro planeta es hermoso pero también puede ser feroz. Mi sentido abrazo a todo el pueblo japonés, en especial a aquellos que sufrieron pérdidas de familiares, afectos y queridas mascotas, enseres y tesoros, y por el horror que tuvieron que soportar. El Tsunami de Tailandia de 2004 provocó 230.000 muertes. Ocho veces más que el de Japón.

38:20 is so horrible, the filmers from their vantage point, seeing this monstrous wave gulping down entire houses in the distance as it gradually approaches these people down below walking through the street, screaming "RUN! RUN AWAY!", feeling painfully helpless i imagine. pure horror.

11:20 I can think of nothing more terrifying than being caught in this building and unable to escape. To wait and wonder if the building will suddenly collapse and you will be pulled into that icy water.
A lot of people are asking why they didn't evacuate: The time between the earthquake and the tsunami reaching the shore was 30 minutes. Many places only had 10 minutes of warning. 60% of deaths were elderly: They literally couldn't run fast enough.
That's horrifying. The screams of the people who couldn't get to higher ground is haunting. It's something that will definitely stay with me.
Also, in this case the prediwas too optimistic. In many cases, the higher ground that was supposed to be save just wasn't.
You can walk a long way in 10 minutes even at a relatively slow pace.

It still amazes me how one side of a building can have the water 1-5m different to the other… the sheer amount of water that quake moved is insane
The wall behind the building is incredibley high right at the beginning if the wall wasn't seen in this video its in plenty other videos
And the water coming in seemed to be non-stopped over pour the wall in minutes.

Soy chileno estos videos son muy informativos para nosotros. Vivimos en el cinturón de fuego del Pacífico en la intersección de dos placas geológicas muy activas. Chile se debe preparar para estos eventos. Debemos dejar de construir a la orilla del mar, especialmente al nivel del océano. Hay que construir zonas de seguridad y preparar a población con alertas y ensayos. Si este mismo tsunami de Japón ocurriera en Viña Del Mar, Concepcion o Iquique sería un tremendo desastre.

Portland Oregon here. Also in the Ring. I'm about fifty miles inland so tsunami doesn't worry me. But, I've lived through two earthquakes. It's a terrible feeling when the *ground* moves. You feel absolutely helpless.

What's so scary about this tsunami is that it seems so slow in building up its power when it comes through, but when it comes through, it's devastating beyond belief... 😳
It's not slow it's just further away, then once it gets to you you can see how fast it's coming except if you can see it's speed by then it's too late for you...

@@chilly1661 that makes little difference to a person fleeing, it's already faster than any human can run, either way you're dead if you haven't cleared the area.
The part around 50 min where the people have no idea what's coming is devastating to hear their grief and watch those people get swept away...
@@Yinzer808 they knew it was on the way but again they think cos they can't immediately see it they've got time when they haven't, they shouldn't have been anywhere near that road. Especially the elderly who can't get away as fast, people dawdle and you can't afford to dawdle, water can outpace any human within seconds even if it is seemingly far away.

I don't believe that woman ahead of him made it either..she hesitated and ran to the right and was trapped..had she made a dash straight away..maybe she might have survived...but the water just came so fast within seconds.
This just blows my mind and how powerful mother nature can be😢

Hearing people screaming as the water washes a building away is one of the most haunting things ive heard 😭
And the crying
Wow, that building right on the sea wall in the first clip reslly held its position despite water completely overrunning it. But my God, watching those people stand in the street instead of getting to higher ground, really raw. You can even see a person being swept away further down the street.
All these years later, it still hurts to watch these clips. So many people's lives changed, so fast.
It broke my heart to hear the weeping. I can’t imagine losing my loved ones this way, or even the pets that I love.

To see the ocean come onto the land...truly terrifying. Even seeing this footage it's hard to believe. Stunning. So many lives lost. 😢
It goes to show how powerless we are in the face of nature. The forces involved were so large that the whole Earth was tipped off its axis (by a few inches or centimetres).

Even after all these years, it still chills me to the bone to watch this. The ferocity of Mother Nature will win every time….my heart aches for the victims and their surviving families. And now another earthquake & tsunami in Jan 2024. God bless Japan and it’s people. 🇬🇧

Simply incredible to watch! Deeply saddened for the victims of this natural disaster. All the pets that were lost. But I have to say that these clips of this incredible occurrence that were captured have left me mesmerized and in absolute awe of the power of nature. The best special effects don't hold up to these actual images and footage of a very destructive Tsunami. Thank you for putting together this compilation of a very sad in Japan.

I always thought it would be so nice to live in a warm place all the time, now I see all this distruction from nature. I greatly appreciate where I live. Grass isn't always greener on the other side. Creator bless all the displaced people and the lost loved ones.
Japan was super cold at this time unfortunately. I think it snowed later just to make things worse.

This is so sad… im hurt for the ones who lost everything they own.
From 58:02 the video shows a ship went to the open sea to meet the waves head on, thereby no damage was suffered. Whereas the following segment, from 1:01:49, we can see what happened to those who didn't leave the harbor, they were tossed around like toys. My heart goes to those who didn't survive the tsunami.
I think about the thousands of people who got up that morning and thought only about their normal everyday activities to come: work, school, doctor's appointments, car repairs, etc. And then that afternoon they're fleeing from death threatened by the horrible black water that washed in and out, taking out most of their town or city while they watched under dismal grey skies, falling snow and frigid temperatures. Many, many others didn't see much of this happening because they died in terror and pain from this same disaster.

It's pretty impossible for the common people, for a common guy like me, to really understand the scale of that disaster... The amount of sea water displacement that occurred that day is something that human mind fails to comprehend on the whole, it's too huge, in some areas water reached 40 meters in height (131 ft.)... after twelve+ years my mind still goes to all the deads and their families, and to all those who lost everything but just their lives...💖💖
....this is nothing compared to what happened in _the great flood_ .

海沿いの海抜ゼロメートル地域に住んでいる人は、津波に関しては防潮堤だけが頼りなんだけど、逆にその防潮堤のせいで海が見えなくって逃げるのが遅くなるというジレンマ。

It STILL just breaks my heart…..Could there have been a worse day, weather-wise? ….I always think of those who may have survived the tsunami-but, trapped in debris, perhaps Injured, in such wet & freezing cold temperatures, hypothermia would surely have taken those not fortunate enough to have been immediately found….😢
How so? This was not a weather event, but a geological event. Weather had no bearing.
I was born and raised in Santa Monica California, right by the ocean.
When I look at the ocean it feels like the water is literally pulling at me. Like it is pulling me towards it.
You can feel the power of the water
I'm up the road in Portland. I know that feeling. I used to tease my husband and say that Poseidon was calling me. He'd say, "tell him to shut up" 🤣

It's a strange feeling. It doesn't feel threatening, but you can definitely feel the power of all that water. It always made me think of that part of Genesis about the creation of the earth it says--- The spirit of the lord moved upon the face of the waters.
Sometimes I think maybe water is the physical manifestation of God.

It reflects God's unlimited ability to *create.* We're still learning about things He's created that are new to us, every day. We can't possibly learn of everything He made. Yep, we know very little about the undersea environment.
California, reminded,it has its devastation but was there tsunami there then, close to coastline what forces the oceans do have. World rebuilds itself, but its hell of alot going on across world 2023 alone,without lots of good ppl able helping i feel too unimaginable be in a disaster. Places lived travel been seen, many have had fair share of fires to floods. Still trying some to put their lives back together again.
Well just hearing China big quake today as ice and fire spitting from Iceland, now that be a vision, place go see.
This is so sad and terrifying and the part that it got stuck on my mind is around the time 3:54 on the vide when this old man and a lady got trapped and hold on on some house porch and the houses get whipped off by all the water and debris, I just can’t imagine the fear that they had to experience, I just hope that somehow they made it but I truly doubt it. Even after so many years I still get tears in my eyes and the knot on my throat every time I get to watch one of this videos. Indescribable feeling of hopelessness,God Bless all those beautiful people and protect them from another event like that and may they Rest In Peace all those who perished .
They didn't survive. Both were killed. And the woman in particular was so close to safety too.

@@nuny313 Unfortunately, the old man couldn't walk fast enough to be able to escape. The woman almost reached safety but she was stopped when the water pushed in at high speed from the street on the left, carrying cars with it. She couldn't get across that.
Pity that god chose to withhold blessings on that day..

After years of watching clips of this tsunami, I always thought those that ran to the hills were the luckiest but seeing this new clips that I've never seen before made me wonder if they actually are because of how freezing it's getting without any source of warmth 😢.
And it was raining as well ..
Some visuals were very terrifying. I watched few videos where people drowning in water i dont know if they survived but i really hope they did 😭 it still breaks my heart for those elementary kids in Ishinomaki who lost their lifes because of their teachers poor decisions. You can imagine how horrible it was when some dead bodies were found after digging the sand and some are still missing and one skeleton was found in 2021-22 i think.
This confirms my love of the mountains.

There was only one person on that roof, his name was Yukihiro Kikuch. The building he was on was his parent's home, but even though it got washed away, he survived by climbing onto another roof.

In movies they always have the tsunami waves much higher when they break near the shore. Like already swallowing buildings etc. The real thing is actually much more terrifying. Its deceiving because some people think "oh its not that bad" for a minute or two, causing them to let down their guard. Then it surges to 2 or 3 stories and a lot of people have no time to get to safety...
People who watch this video will probably run to higher ground if they encounter an earthquake near the ocean. Many people lost their lives, but I hope these videos will help many others in the future.
I have seen a lot of this footage but i still marvel at the first part. Kudos to whoever built that building. Enormous pressure and weight hitting that and it still held strong even with the water going through it. Amazing. RIP to all the people and animals who lost their life to this Tragedy!

Te equivocas estimado amigo, en el terremoto que tiró el ángel de la independencia de su base provocó un tsunami que inundó Acapulco en los años 50, cabe aclarar que en esa época Acapulco era como un pueblo sobre las montañas pero según los historiadores locales la marejada de agua llegó a inundar la catedral de nuestra señora de la Soledad (la parroquia del zocalo de Acapulco) por lo cual se puede deducir que fue un tsunami de entre 3-4 metros de altura. Mientras que el de Japón fue de mas de 10. En México se pueden generar tsunamis, solo que hemos tenido mucha suerte hasta ahora

Este tsunami afectó a una pequeña parte de Japón pero aún así entre muertos y desaparecidos creo que hubo 28.000 aproximadamente, quizá lo más triste de todo es que algunas administraciones japonesas trataron a algunas víctimas sobrevivientes como ciudadanos de segunda categoría a partir de este momento

While the waves were around 10 meters at the point of impact, they further increased in height to reach 15 meters. This meant that four-story buildings were completely engulfed by the sea. In some areas, even six-story buildings were fully submerged.
Upon hearing of the tsunami, people who were in homes about 1.5 kilometers from the coast all went up to the second floor, but these houses were completely swallowed by the sea, resulting in the death of most of these individuals.

The first one is so sad hearing the woman screaming as she was swept away, Second one i hadn't seen. The third one someone said those two people survived but I highly doubt that. So much death but also lots of miracle survivals stories too.

No one could help him because the water was coming from all the streets, on the sides. It would have been suicide to attempt to help him. There is a video of several men trying to save a person in a wheelchair. One man in a business suit was swept away while trying to help.

I believe he was hoding onto that blue sign within the waters and it got washed away. Sadly i do not think he survived. The sad truth of disasters like these. RIP

1度カメラが上を向いてから再び老人がいたはずの位置の波を映し出す頃には、もう叫び声は聞こえません。
息子がカメラの後方にいたのは、父親を助けに行こうとする彼を消防隊員が必死に引き止めていたことと、父親が津波に飲まれる瞬間を見てしまった息子が、とてつもない絶望で言葉さえ出なくなったことが想像できます。
だけど消防隊員は助かる命までも失わせるわけにはいかなかった。確実に1人の命を救っていた。
本当に悲しくて残酷な瞬間でした。
津波のときに助けに戻ってはいけません。
ソレが家族であってもです。
助けに行って、その命まで失わないために。
探すのは津波が去ってから。

At 37:10 it appears something caught a very long underwater cable, pulling it up and out of the water at very high speed. At the top left of the passing boat, the spray from the suddenly strained cable looks like superfast torpedo shooting from the boat towards the shore, right through a seawall. Damn.
